We've been coming here for years, but aparently there has been new owners since the last three. We were greeted by the ever so charming and very polite Raphael! Even though he was multi-tasking with take out orders on the phone, he got our magarita order over to us in no time. We love the menu choices.... There's lots of delicious entres to choose from. My husband and I have just moved to Fairhaven recently and checked out this spot! I'm so confused on why this place doesn't have more 5 star reviews. Place is dead on Saturday for lunch. No music so we hear the waitress and cook talking in Spanish for 45 minutes at the top of their lungs. Slow service with no one here. Food is obviously microwaved. $50 for two with no drinks. No thanks. read more

This is the same restaurant as two other locations in Bellingham. I am not sure why there are negative reviews here. Possibly from competitors and ex employees of the last restaurant that closed on this property. I went to this location last night to check it out and had an excellent meal. Great chips and salsa, good margaritas, and a superb Chile Relleno. In addition the shredded beef burrito was very good and the salsa verde covering it was legit for sure. My wife had the enchiladas mole' and she said the mole' was very good. Not saying I'm the expert on Mexican food but I do see a lot of it here and my other residence in San Diego. So, with that said I think this is a very good Mexican restuarant. Note to management. Only issue I see maybe for reference is the outside restaurant colors etc. Its still looking like the old restaurant and you may want to change it up by adding some brick facing to have it look like Fairhaven and lose the blue facade. Add some muted red and green to make it more attractive .. Just a thought. read more

A few months ago I came here and had a great meal and service. This time, there seemed to be a new server and cook. I put my order in for a lunch special and enjoyed the view of Fairhaven Harris Av. busy with people even on a rainy day. It took about 15 minutes to make. On a lunch hour, and only 2 groups on the restaurant, that's a little long. I've eaten at the other Al Agave and they take 5 min to get the food out to you, really. The food came and again, the quality was just not there. The taste was very flat for how it should taste. There are better places in this competitive location to have a better lunch at. Maybe they will bring back the opening staff that started the place out a few months ago? Hint! read more

Is there a way to keep a steady stream of music to avoid those awkward silences? Paloma was okay, should use Jarritos Grapefruit soda over Squirt. It is rare that I give a bad review to a restaurant, but these guys earned it. If you want bland Mexican American food, margaritas made with petroleum grade tequila, and rather unappealing decor, this is the place for you. The one bright spot was that the wait staff was friendly and took my order and delivered food promptly. I had a margarita that lacked any complexity and tasted only of tequila and limes (admittedly important components but not enough by themselves). While I waited for my dinner the waitress brought the usual chips and salsa. Unfortunately the chips were stale and the salsa undistinguished. I had mole enchiladas. They were not terrible, but totally uninspired. The rice was gummy and lacking flavor. The beans good, and tasty when scooped with the chips. So bottom line, no reason to eat here except for the friendly staff. If you want to eat, there are lots of better options nearby. read more

Had amazing array of veggies including broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, onions, bell peppers, etc. The burritos are HUGE so be warned that you will have several meals ahead of you! Delicious food. Lots of vegetarian options that can easily be made vegan. The veggie fajitas and spinach enchiladas are delicious.

We are fans of El Agave in Sudden Valley. I had the Pollo Mole'. The sauce was not quite there when compared to the SV restaurant though the recipe is supposed to be the same. The Fairhaven location will need to step up it's game in order to compete with Jalapenos, one of our favorite restaurants. Dos Padres had a unique atmosphere and menu that competed but will probably be difficult to replace. Just another Mexican restaurant in Fairhaven won't do it. read more

My husband and I love to visit this spot (cantina side) whenever we want to watch international soccer games. They are always happy to find the channel for us, and the lunch specials are a great deal and delicious (I recommend the carne asada). I'm not sure what is going on with the other reviews here, but my fiancé came in here for lunch on a Saturday and the service and food were really good. We just moved from California (originally from Montana) so we know good Mexican food. The steak fajitas were great and my fiancé got the beef taquitos which she enjoyed. It was not amazing by any means but it was affordable, the service was great, and the staff was extremely friendly. Not sure why everyone is so picky about timing in Bellingham... their driving definitely shows they're in no hurry to get anywhere so the complaint seems unwaranted... keep up the good work El Agave. read more

Enchiladas Rancheros looked look soggy floppy tacos dipped in enchilada sauce, qiesadilla was floppy...steamed, not grilled, chicken fajitas were mostly onion with bits of chicken and not well seasoned and the carne asada was chewey and over oiled and lacking flavor. I have been to other branches and many other Mexican restaurants throughout the city and this dining experience reminds me of the amazing Mexican food in Texas and Florida. No one can beat that mexican food that but El Agave runs a close second! The only suggestion I have is to provide Mexican rice and beans WITHOUT animal fat for the vegetarians. read more

Not worth it. -Service was slow for being half empty, so much so another table that was left waiting for menus just got up and left. -Issue with our order, they double checked that we ordered the Fajitas for Two and then both brought and later charged for Fajitas for one. We only got the check in a timely manner because the chef saw us and got the waiters attention. -Beans tasted off, rice was alright, and the Fajitas were okay. I didn't experience what some of these other reviewers did. We ate here this past Saturday for lunch and we were quite pleased. I was happy to see topopo salad on the menu, so I ordered that . Shredded flavorful chicken on lettuce with tomatoes (requested none but got them anyway, not a deal breaker though), avocado slices, cheese and Italian dressing on tostada shells spread with refried beans. It was delicious! Husband got a combo meal of a tamale and beef enchilada, asked for whole beans. The plate had refried beans but, without anything being said, the server quickly brought out a cup of whole beans, saying the kitchen made a mistake. We appreciated the honesty. The tamale was dry and too much masa but the enchilada was tasty. Service was sweet, the food arrived quickly. Great salsa! read more

Dos Padres, a fixture of Fairhaven, was recently taken over by El Agave. Based on our visit, this might not be an upgrade. The menu has changed and the food, while basic American-Mexican, was fine--the chile relleno was quite tasty--and our server was friendly and attentive. But who's the targeted clientele? The hard rock music selections and tolerance for rowdy guests seems to cater to students. We found the noise level excessive, and the management wasn't on top of it. I know Bellingham is a little over 1,300 miles from the Mexican border but is it that hard to believe that there isn't at least 1 authentic Mexican restaurant somewhere in the area? I haven't found a single place that even comes close to real Tex-Mex cooking let alone traditional south of the border cuisine. Our meal at El Agave is a prime example. Bland, non-spicy, and boring are the polite terms I can use to describe what is probably some of the most non-memorable Mexican entrees we've had in years.
