I'm going to have to agree with the previous two reviews. I really don't understand how this place has such a high review. I ordered a shrimp burrito and it was hot...literally. I almost burned my fingers off trying to eat the thing. With the taste buds that managed to not get destroyed due to the heat, I found the burrito bland. Nothing really special about it. I definitely have had much better burritos in the past. I suppose one plus I can give this place is that their workers are super nice. After ordering, they gave me a sample of their soup. I ordered the California burrito and loved it! The fries were super crispy, the pollo asado was flavorful and cooked well. The flour tortilla was heated on the griddle so it had some nice color and extra flavor without feeling greasy. I really like the salsa roja they served on the side. Very consistent, delicious Mexican food with great healthy vegetarian options (spinach enchiladas are my go to and the grilled vegetables burrito as well). The guacamole is the best on the island and is jot spicy so my kids can chomp it up. Kids also love the chicken tortilla soup. Really thankful to have them, especially during the pandemic. I live a 10 minutes walk away, but sometimes rely on third party delivery as I'm home with little kids, happy that we have that option. My sweetie & I stumbled on this place after an overly ambitious walk investigating our new hood that is Alameda. Needing someplace to rest and refuel, we cruised on in, and took a gander at the cafeteria-style menu. I ordered up a couple of steak street tacos, and he went for the carne asada platter. We were lucky enough to get the last table and shortly after taking a seat, I was presented with authentic style tacos simply topped with onion and cilantro (yum!) and a wedge of lime on the side. Very tasty, no tough, fatty cuts of steak here. For a buck fifty, you can't go wrong! The salsa is tasty; I assume it's homemade judging by the condiment style containers that accompanied my order. Spicy salsa is also available upon request for patrons sporting braver tastebuds. And for the carne asada? All I have to say is that it was good enough for my partner to order again when we popped in 2 days later. After only 2 visits, this has already become a neighborhood staple. read more

The people who run this place are absolute sweethearts. They got to know us (I, GF, roommate). One night we came down while they were closing. They saw our sad puppy dog faces, and re-opened just to serve us street tacos outside while they cleaned inside. So nice and such good food! About the food- I have heard good things about the street tacos and I agree. The tortas are BOMB-ASS good. The nachos are OK- I've had better. The salsas that come in squirt bottles make me disappointed about lack of fresh salsas or a bar. The burritos can be hit or miss, and avoid the BBQ meat, the sauce is too sweet. I have heard that Alameda is very lacking for good taquerias. This place is a decent option, it just calls for being a little selective if you want their best. They are the closest restaurant to my place now. I still miss frequenting taquerias in the Mission, but I've had much worse tortas at those, so that's what I recommend this place for. I just have to reach out and praise thise place. I order delivery from there on a fairly regular basis even though they are way across town from me! I have found over the years that their food is the best and most consistant of all the Mexican food places in Alameda! I always order the taquito's and sometimes soup and salad and the flan. Also burrito's and taco's. Every time it is so GOOD! Most of our other local places that are closer to me with mexican food have fallen in quality and service over the years. My only complaint? That El Caballo is not a sit down resturaunt with a bar in the middle of town. HOWEVER, I would never want them to change what they are doing food wise and the big sit down place is hard to maintain. So be it. I will continue to order delivery for my faves or nab them on the go when I am in that area of Alameda. Thank you El Caballo. You rock! i just got hung up on because she was not able to understand my phone order. not sure what went wrong, but she kept ordering chicken instead of pork for the choice of meat. Called back, and they hung up on me as soon as they picked up- i guess the workers don't give two sh*ts about anything. they had gotten my orders wrong a few times, and when it's right- the food was not bad. customer service is NOT good. this is making me ordering food from other places in town which can get my orders right. read more

FINALLY A UNIQUE BURRITO EXPERIENCE! I visited this place tonight based on Yelp reviews and it did not disappoint. My first impression TBH, was "Wow, this place is small". But as I approached the counter I noticed the cooks in white chef uniforms. WTH? Really. Cool! I've NEVER seen that in a mexican restaurant before and I have to admit that I liked it. It made me feel like they took their food seriously. The man who took my order spoke great english which was very friendly. I speak spanish but I'm way better at english. He never switched to spanish even after I sprinkled in some spanish during my order. I asked what was good and he led off with the burrito. i was in the mood for tacos so I ordered two street style tacos and a super burrito. He asked what type of beans I wanted which I loved because some places only have the regular pinto beans. I went with black. As I waited for my to-go order, one of the "chefs" brought out two samples of their soup to me. I was borderline stunned. Where am I? And guess what? The soup was delicious. I was really impressed. I'm not even much of a soup guy thanks to it being forced down my throat as a kid but I liked these. I believe one was chicken enchilada and it was TASTY! On the drive home I powered down the chips because they were delicious. At home, I started with the tacos. They were good and flavorful. TBH mexico city tacos are hard to differentiate. I've had plenty. Their tacos are up to par with the rest. The main event was the super burrito and it was superb! OMG the tortilla was nice and soft. I had the pastor (BBQ pork) and it was off the chain. It was the tastiest burrito I've ever had. EVER. I've found my new place. My husband always gets the shrimp burrito and can never stop talking about how many shrimp it has. every time. I personally like the carnitas. What I LOVE is the soup. I only wish this place was open later on the weekends. This is my favorite Mexican place on Alameda. Great street tacos, great burritos, great nachos, good flautas and good soup. I've ordered carnitas, carne asada, and chicken (shredded and grilled versions). I've never ordered the fish. The meat is always tender and well spiced. The burritos are huge and moist. Horchatas are really good here too. The only thing I find meh beyond the early closing time is the guacamole. It is sort of bland and runny. The salsa flavors almost make up for it. If this place had better guac and slightly faster service (especially if I phone in and am told 20 minutes, arrive after 30 minutes and still have to wait 10 minutes), I would give it 5 stars. Heard a good review of this place during a discussion of the best burritos in the bay area on KQED. And... The burrito was okay. I do you think I would put it in the top burritos in the bay or even in Alameda however. For a really good decently priced burrito I will stick with Calafia Taqueria on Webster. That being said they do have a much larger burrito menu and I would probably return to try some of the other more unique options they offer. read more

Delicious carnitas tacos and every soup sample I've tasted is truly something. We went last weekend and saw they were making fish tacos (not on the menu.) Ordered one in addition to our other items (chicken flautas and carnitas street tacos) and it was FABULOUS. Thank you Yelp for introducing me to this great place in Alameda. There's almost no seating inside for lunch, but that doesn't matter because the food and service makes up for it. The Rustic Tortilla Soup is one of the best Tortilla Soups I've ever had, very reasonably priced, and is great on a cool day. Also the Corn Chowder is quite worth mentioning. (As these are the only two soups I've had there, I can say they're great.. I'd assume the others are just as good) The Grilled Chicken is some of the must succulent pollo I've had in a while... if it was on a bone, it would have been falling off of it. Very generously sized 'wraps' (aka burritos), amazing salsa for the chips (request the hot salsa from the squeeze bottle and mix it with the pico de gallo for maximum awesome), and very helpful staff. Tacos, wraps, chips, soups, everything I've had has been great. Highly recommend. Pros: Great service, good prices, great selection, fast, awesome ingredients. Breakfast menu as well. This place might be the only Mexican restaurant in alameda with tongue. I ordered a regular burrito with the cow tongue and I have to say I was impressed it was what I expected and more it had a lot of flavor and very soft. This place hit the spot! We were looking for a new Mexican restaurant since our old favorite went down hill. I had the enchiladas with al pastor and chicken and my husband had an al pastor burrito which we both enjoyed. The guacamole had good flavor, but looked like it had been made a lot earlier since it was an olive green color. The seating is very casual with metal tables, paper towel rolls, and self serve water/utensils. We were offered generous samples of 3 different soups which were hearty. First of all I walk in all smiley and respectful and was ignored for about five minutes later when the guy took my order I ordered a beef tongue burrito which is known to be soft and very tasteful to those who eat beef tongue. I am personally Moroccan so I have been eating beef tongue since I was four years old. As I watch the lady who makes the food pour the COMPLETELY frozen tongue chunks onto the grill from that moment I had a feeling something was going to go wrong. The chunks of the beef tongue were actually hard instead of soft layer of fat was not cleaned off and the burrito was practically stuffed with rice. It has been about five hours and I threw up once! still burping and feeling horrible this was probably one of the most disgusting burritos I have ever had in my life could not finish a quarter of the burrito no matter how hungry I wasOver priced and extremely low quality food. (Sick beef, that's exactly what it felt and tasted like) . Worst part is that nobody gives a damn about the food NOR customer service!!! I have been to places that have bad food don't get me wrong their customer service made up for it and they never got a bad review for me. As a matter fact I went back to those places to try new things since their service was so good. We have lived on Alameda Island for about 4 years. We happend into El Caballo by chance one day after coming out of Pagano's Hardware. We couldnt have been happier. We have had everything from the thick creamy home made soups to the tiny scrumptuous street tacos to the super carnitas burritos. We have not had ANYTHING that was not great........I take that back. We picked up a couple of the Flan's that were sitting in the soda case. Our mistake for getting something sitting in a fridge when we had a world of fresh goodness just waiting for us to ask for it right in front of us. This place is FANTASTIC!!!!! read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! My boyfriend brought me to this place after we bent down my golf clubs at Alameda Golf Works and I fell in love. The carne asada on the super nachos were the best I've ever had. The meat was perfectly flavored and not rubbery like at some other taquerias. The green salsa was to die for. It was slightly tart but not overly spicy. I also had the chicharon pupusas which were nicely grilled and the crispiness of the pork skin was still detectable through the soft and sweet flavor of the corn meal. For dessert we shared the Almond flan which wasn't overly sweet and was very smooth and refreshing. Despite eating so much, I didn't feel bogged down by the food. I was so pleased with the food and the warm and friendly staff that I went back again 2 days later and got the same thing! This place is a gem!! This place is fantastic. Really authentic taqueria. Great street tacos, beans, salsas, carnitas--everything I've tried has been really great. And it's affordable. I avoided trying the place, frankly, because of the name. I assumed, incorrectly, that it would be an American-ified taco place, trying to appeal to the wrap-crazed masses. Not so. In fact, I think they've done themselves a disservice by naming the place El Caballo "Wraps". Folks looking for a spinach wrap won't get what they want (although I do believe they offer spinach tortillas), and some, like me, might not try it because they think they won't get what they want, either. Best to call them "wraps" as they're not really burritos. But I do enjoy their tamales and enchiladas. Get the combo plate, it's quite filling. You'll probably want to ask for some hot sauce too, this stuff is mild without it. Overall, it's like a Plan B lunch place. Won't fail you but there are other options out there. read more
