A hidden gem! We visited tonight for the first time and have found a new favorite spot! There was a lot of heart in this place and it was evident from the way we were greeted and welcomed at the door. We were seated right away and our waiter was so helpful in selections of the menu. The ambiance was pleasant and calming, but we also loved being able to watch the games that were on. The food was delicious, one of the best tortilla soups I've ever had and the margaritas were out of this world! Do not miss out on the chips and queso. My wife and I decided to stop by for an app and some drinks to see what this place was like. I have to say, they've done a nice job with this spot. We shared the ceviche and had some cocktails. As far as the cocktails- I had the Vampiro which was a nice start, then had La Mescaliita, La Mescalita will be my drink of choice here. It had the perfect flavors and balance of Mezcal, lime and hibiscus. My wife had the house Paloma and enjoyed it. Oh and the ceviche? Hands down one of the best we've had in the area. We were a bit saddened to see Thlaco close, but this spot looks promising. Can't wait to try the chilaquiles for breakfast! read more

I went to this restaurant Sunday 7/6/2025 and the service was terrible, i left a cash tip and tipped 0.00 on my card. The next day i see that the waiter added a $10.00 tip on my card! That is fraud i have never seen a restaurant do that. read more

The food tonight was pretty decent--not on par with the caliber of Mexican food we're used to in the Rio Grande Valley, but the problem came when my wife and I ordered our third and last (shared) margarita and very specifically requested it be made with Patrón and Gran Marnier. My wife had noted that the second round tasted...off...but she generously chalked it up to spicy food. Personally, I can't tell the difference as I have the palate of someone who's just burned his tongue on too-hot pizza rolls. She watched the bartender/manager pour what would've been our last margarita that we were going to share between us with their well tequila and triple sec. When she called them out on it, the bartender/manager said he'd made a mistake and used the wrong liquor, but only after my wife made it abundantly clear that she was watching the whole time with a clear line of sight to his work area. He truculently agreed to take the last couple drinks off the bill, but admitted no fault. Our server apologized profusely and was still tipped generously, even considering what had happened. Long story short: Beware if you're ordering drinks...if you don't have a very discriminating palate like my super-taster wife or have a clear view of the bartender at work, you may not be getting what you think you're ordering. Stopped in after finding this place on yelp, it had a 4.9 so I had to try it. The queso was great The enchilada's poblano was just ok. I've definitely had better. We also tried breakfast and the enchiladas mole and they were wildly mediocre. They were obviously short on staff and it took forever to get our drinks and food. Overall, mediocre for sure. There are a few decent things to discuss. Firstly, the service was good. We had a sweet lady who was very attentive and nice. The patio was ok. The food absolutely sucks period. The chips were out of a bag and stale. The tortillas weren't homemade. They too were out of a bag. I ordered shrimp enchiladas and they were consumable at best. My wife had the fajita platter and it was a total bust. They were charging a premium for massive sub par quality. I had 2 margaritas one on the rocks and one frozen. I couldn't finish either and I loooooove margaritas. Both were made from a mix and lots of simple syrup. The frozen one was garnished with some sort of candy. I should have sent them back and asked to have them removed from my bill but I never send stuff back. I'll just leave it right here by ripping them apart and pledge to never go back plain and simple. Im a native Texan who loves mexican food and harp on how horrible mexican food is in California out where I live. This place made me feel like I was in California eating garbage mexican food again just like any other day. read more

We went in a Saturday evening and they were quite busy, yet we had good service. Ordered several menu items, including pancakes and everything was tasty and fresh. I really enjoyed the pancakes lol! My taste buds may have been off but the Catalina margarita was not good. However they totally redeemed themselves with the pomegranate margarita. I apologize I can't remember the name of it. I ordered the tacos nortenos the taste was amazing but the chicken was dry. Their chips are light and crunchy and salsa was spicy but very flavor. This was my first visit to El Catrin. Took a friend for lunch for her birthday: we were quickly greeted and seated. Our waitress was very attentive and always checked back on us. The food was excellent: chips and salsa was brought out while we waited for our food. The salsa was good and had a "kick" to it, we had the Queso as an appetizer and it was very good. For our entrees I had the Pozole and my friend had the taco plate; the Pozole was a little spicy but the meat was very tender and was overall good, my friend enjoyed her entree as well. The bar appeared to have a nice stock selection of liquors and the breakfast menu looked great also. I look forward to going back for Happy Hour & Dinner with my husband. read more
