Found this place based on the yelp reviews of restaurants in our area while visiting San Antonio. Restaurant is tucked away in a shopping center but was a great find. Food was excellent!! We ordered two kinds of chilaquiles, enchiladas, tacos and an ensalada de nopalitos. Everything was delicious. Service was excellent. Music and atmosphere were fantastic for a Mexican restaurant. El Catrin is the real Mexican deal. Food inspired from interior Mexico, not the Tex-Mex we see so many places in San Antonio. Gerardo took good care of us. He worked at El Jarro de Arturo for many years before making the change. The La Catrina margaritas with Tajin on the rim were very refreshing. Made with just three ingredients like I like it. The salsa served with the chips was different than we have had elsewhere and was very good. My wife had the ceviche which was very fresh. And she also had the Rajas de Chile Poblano. Very creamy and good on a chip or tortilla. I had the Pescado Al Ajillo for my entree. The garlic and mushrooms with that light tomato sauce was excellent. The white rice and vegetables were a nice, light accompaniment. The manager came over and we told him about the San Antonio Restaurant page on Facebook. He also told us his grandmother used to make salsa like this and served it with fresh tortillas when she could not afford meat. The tortillas and salsa were definitely comfort food. They were out of flan on this trip. We will be back as I want to try their mole. The manager told us it's made with over 20 ingredients. I had the pleasure of visiting this restaurant during our week in San Antonio. This place did not disappoint. You know when the salsa comes out orange, it's going to be delicious. Read about it, being we were close & hungry, thought we check it out. Called to ensure there was no wait. As we were all pretty hungry. We were able to walk directly and seated immediately. There was seating available in and outdoors. Casual atmosphere with Latin pop music. Waiter took our food and drink orders & we were promptly served. Waiter took the time to provide suggestions. Pleasantly surprised as I sipped on the perfect Amaretto Sour. Crunchy fresh chips & amazing salsa, the chips and salsa were free. We ordered queso con chorizo & guacamole. Honestly we couldn't get enough of the queso & chips. I ordered the trio enchiladas omg! Finally the perfect enchilada, all 3. No dried chicken enchiladas here! No overly seasoned cinnamon enchiladas. Everyone at our table of 5 adults had zero complaints! Everything was perfect! Really can't say the best Mexican food, we have had in awhile! We only tried their breakfast so this review is based on that. Food was meh. Over price pancakes were dry, no butter on them. Ordered over medium eggs and I guess the cooked just sent whatever they felt like and got them runny. The potatoes were also overcooked and burnt. Soda cans were $4.50!! Crazy IMO. We have been coming to El Catrin for quite some time. However, the past couple of visits were not up to the previous quality and service. We went last Friday and my husband does not want to go back anymore. The food was very average this time (we both had different types of enchiladas) and the servers seemed frazzled. I was really disappointed in my drink. I always get a mescalita and am usually feeling a little tipsy after a few sips. I drank the whole thing and it had no effect whatsoever. I'm not sure it had any mezcal at all. Very disappointed in the evening overall and it was expensive especially considering the lack of food and drink quality this time around. read more

I am always looking for a good breakfast spot. I found this restaurant online and it's brand new just opened in my area. It was SO GOOD! Our waiter I think his name was Antonio, best SERVICE I've had in awhile. He was so nice and patient with all the questions we had and even gave us great recommendations. We had order chilaquiles and pancakes. Everything was great. I definitely like the verde chilaquiles more than the red and chipotle ones. The coffee we had order was cafe de la olla so tasty. Such a great restaurant overall. It was clean and had a variety of different items on the menu. Will definitely be coming back. Love supporting small businesses. read more

We love this place. Great drinks (try the Mescalita) and excellent food. Our current favorite is the Pequena flank steak. Order some side tortillas and it's amazing. Only minor quibble: the free tortilla chips are poor quality. This restaurant would be perfection with a slight upgrade in quality of the chips. read more

This is a new place in the area, open for a month, and it's a blessing. We get excited when new food places open that are not major chains especially in this are. The staff is super friendly. They have many options when it comes to breakfast. We tried both the chilaquiles verdes and divorciados. We went back the next day and tried enchiladas the taco norteños. They do not have a kids menu but I would recommend bean and cheese taco or nachos. They have a bar with lots of seating. The restaurant was very clean. Chips and salsa or served to your table, the salsa has a little spice and a very good taste. read more

My girlfriends and I decided to give this place a try after reading about it on the San Antonio Restaurant Group on FB. We got to El Catrin around 11:30 AM and the place was pretty full. Thankfully, there were a couple of empty tables to accommodate our group. We were immediately attended to. Our wait person handed us our chips and salsa. We placed our orders after our 4th person got to the restaurant. We went with the guacamole for our appetizer which was delicious! Our entrees consisted of chicken poblano, mini tacos with pastor and carnitas, huevos rancheros and a waffle. The pastor was well seasoned compared to the carnitas. The poblano sauce was a tad salty but otherwise quite good. One thing to note, parking was a bit tight when we got there so keep this in mind. The North San Antonio location is excellent! We recently had a chance to try it and were very impressed. The location is a bit out of the way, but worth the hunt! The menu seems to be the same as the Alamo Heights location. We had drinks, chips, guacamole, shrimp ajiilo, and tacos nortena. Everything was great, food, service thanks to Byron!) and atmosphere. Let me tell you about this new jem i came across. El Catrin is on fire. A mexican restaurant with a full bar. Great atmosphere and service. Lights are dim but bright. The servers were attentive and friendly. but im here to talk about the food. I had the Enchiladas Trio filled with chicken with 3 sauces Chipotle, Mole, and Poblano topped with crema and cheese served with Mexican rice and beans. Those who know me (wife) will tell you, the first thing I do is try the Mole sauce. If it doesn't have just the right amount of sweetness along with spiciness then its a no go. Today did not disappoint, rich creamy with the right sweet to spice ratio. All 3 of the sauces were on point but I LOVE Mole. You must come out and try. I believe they are open till 10pm but I'm not 100%. read more

Best Mexican food we've had in Texas! To start with, the salsa is uniquely delicious. For our entrees, the cheese chili relleno was excellent. Thin batter that was not greasy. Huge poblano pepper perfectly done. Full of cheese with a tasty sauce on top. And hot from the oven. The chicken enchiladas were stuffed and equally delicious. Finally, get the mango mezcal. This is a new location for this Mexican restaurant that also has a location in Alamo Heights. Don't expect tacos to have the starring role on the menu here, they have plenty of other fare to offer including breakfast items like Chilaquiles, waffles and pancakes. I love Chilaquiles, so ofcourse had to try them here and got the rojo version with eggs over easy. It was very tasty but a bit spicier than I was expecting which made my nose run a bit. The chips weren't crispy which was disappointing but again the sauce was very tasty with a good mix of garlic and onion flavors, so I still enjoyed and finished most of my plate. My fiancé got the strawberry pancake which I thought was a bit dry but still had a dense cake texture and was served in a very generous portion. They have a nice bar which takes up a quarter of the main indoor seating area that offers low and high top tables, all chairs have backs. They also offer outdoor shaded seating next to some astro turf to the side which I assume is for our canine friends. We weren't in the mood to drink alcohol today but I definitely want to come back to try a margarita and a different dish from their menu. The check offers a QR code you can use to pay the bill directly on your phone, or you can pay your server directly. We usually use the QR code so we can leave when we are ready instead of needing to wait to settle the bill. The word El Catrin translates to an elegant, well-dressed man accompanied by a lady with the same characteristics, which tells me the restaurant wants to be considered more sophisticated than your average Tex-Mex restaurant. I feel they are well on their way to living up to their name with their gracious staff, menu selection, and well-decorated atmosphere. read more

Amazing food (the mole and crispy pork are incredible) but suspiciously has no prices for cocktails or drinks on their menu. The problem with this is that their drink prices are unreasonably high. Also no Happy Hour ("we're still working on it") whenever I ask. My recommendation is go for the food but go out for drinks elsewhere. read more

We love this place. We live in the Austin area but visit family in San Antonio regularly and come here every time we visit. The staff are so nice and I think every person who works there comes out to greet us and our small children. The food is consistently good and the salsas are second to none. Had a really bad experience when we went for despecho night back on July 25,2025. Did not want to sit us and gave us an obsurd entry fee so we tried sitting at the bar but guy there said it'd be a $50 minimum consumption fee EACH. Way to run us off! read more

Fantastic New Mexican (not TexMex) off N281. We saw this on a segment of a local news station and had to try. We were there at breakfast and our waitress Gabby walked us through the menu. (She was fantastic) My wife had the carnitas migas with scrambled eggs and I had the eggs divorciados. Both were fantastic. The migas corn chips had a great heat to them and the carnitas were great on their own! My green and red sauces were a great combination with each one bringing a different nuance of flavors and heat. A nice touch is the coffee with a touch of cinnamon. We are going back! read more

When paying with cash they don't give correct change back and if tipping less than 20% they get upset!! I pay with cash and my change was not correct, when I spoke to one of the guys there he introduced him self as the "owner's cousin" I explicitly the situation and instead of apologizing first thing he said was "ho that is normal" and then after he cemented is "this all you are tipping" $2.80" on a check of 23.00 that is more than 10%, "you have to leave 20%" he said. The point here is that instead of fixing the problem he actually was ok with it!!! No bueno!! read more

The place is on the small to medium size if you include the patio. The interior decor is quite striking! The main issue when you arrive is that there is no check in stand, you just wait in the doorway until you are seated. It's very off putting since the first set of tables are located practically at the door. We opted to eat at the bar, which is located at the far end of the restaurant & angled in such a way, as to be the main focal point of restaurant & a main piece of their decor (on the plus side, it was outfitted w/purse hooks for a purse, & I personally consider it a major necessity at a bar & all bars should have them, since they are just tucked up under for their customer's convenience as bar stools are extremely hard to hang anything on w/o it getting knocked off all the time because everyone sits so close together). After being seated at the bar, we were quickly greeted by the bartender who took our drink orders & asked if we'd like chips & salsa, (we would typically deny at our local taco houses, but since it was our 1st time here, I wanted to sample them for my review)! We came for brunch, so I opted for the mini tacos ( 1/2 pastor & 1/2 carnitas, w/ a side of charro beans) & my boyfriend got the enchilada trio (3 chicken enchilladas covered in chipotle, mole & poblano sauce w/rice & charro beans), this way, we get to sample both of them! Our drinks were served along w/warmed chips & a really delicious salsa (not spicy, but very very tasty) except that I would've liked some more heat aka spicy added to the salsa. Now don't get me wrong, the salsa had a great flavor & typically I can't handle any heat (my taste buds are acting strangely these days so sometimes any heat is on fire for me & sometimes it's just the right amount of flavor to add to your food) & this time I was craving heat! Our food was served pretty quickly, the carnitas taco was really good, but the pastor is not at all as good as I'm used to from my neighborhood taco house. The charro beans are really good, have great flavor & even a bit of heat, which really surprised me. As far as the enchilada trio plate, the chipotle & poblano ones were really delicious & the chicken inside very tender. But, the mole...ugh, way way way tooo sweet! I love mole (I know there are a million different versions but in all honesty, this one needs to be tweaked) , not even sure my BF has ever tried it, but you can be sure, he won't EVER again & had I not tried it several times before, I probably wouldn't either. I really wanted to like it, even tried another bite, but it too was a NO! Service & majority of the food were really good, prices a bit on the high side, but I think they want to be considered a higher caliber of Mexican food restaurant than your local taco house. I personally will be back for another visit , so I can try other dishes & a cocktail or two. Please give this place a try, you may really enjoy what they offer! read more

Great place this was our second time but this time we came for breakfast. The mole chilaquiles were very good and not soggy. I had something different although still good next time I'll get the chilaquiles too. The coffee taste like cafe de olla which was so good and unexpected. Absolutely delicious food!! Chilaquiles Rojo with chicken and avocado was one of the best I have ever had. The sauces on the Enchiladas Trio were very tasty, too but the mole sauce was unbelievable.
