I have been going to this restaurant for years. It is a little family owned restaurant and one of my favorites. Yesterday something was really off , the service was bad and the food was not good. All the servers we young and you had to tell them when you needed something then tell another one because the first one you asked did not follow through. I ordered a chicken enchilada with green sauce and normally it is delicious but not this time, presentation was not good either. I'm hoping it was not sold to the people who were there because it will not last long if these servers are taking care if you. It was really a bad experience. I will go back one more time just to see what happens, if the same servers are there and the food is not good then I won't go back because I drive all the way from Modesto to go there. Service tonite was horrible. Yes the place was busy but there was an abundance of young women working but yet I couldn't seem to get anyone to refill my soda, chips and salsa. I asked three times for refills. When I complained to one of the girls, she bit her tongue. I could see she wanted to say something terrible to me. She took my glass back to finally refill it but shared with another employee that I was complaining and they both looked at me as if they were going to beat me up in the parking lot later. For fear that she might have spit in my soda, I didn't drink it. When I got home I called and spoke to the manager. She sounded like a younger gal and not the older women I thought owned the place. I expressed my concerns and she basically made up one excuse after another. "Oh we were busy and I have new employees and most of my customers are regulars and they don't mind!" Amazingly delicious! Haven't been able to find good quality ingredients at a Mexican restaurant. I had the Compuesta with a freshly made grilled chicken breast. It was moist and yummy! Our first visit was on a Sunday 2/19/17 and the food was great ! The only thing I could possibly complain about was they were out of Pepsi and horchata... and when we got our chips and salsa they offered bean dip along with it which initially was great until we got our tab and said we were charged 3.50 for it (when offered the server never mentioned it would be an additional charge ... we go to las casuelas in Turlock often and they serve bean dip at no charge for the first serving so we thought it was the same since they never disclosed the additional charge ) the bean dip was very tasty nonetheless but next time please disclose certain things I'd like to have the option of choosing whether or not I'd like to have to pay for something additional and we did mention it was our first time there so we didn't know what to expect ... other than that everything was delicious read more

MY GOD. The food here is so damn good. I was really surprised as the bulk of Mexican restaurants I've eaten at Turlock don't impress that much. The food is really spicy and flavorful - they have many unique entrees that I haven't seen other places. I had some of the best chili rellenos I've ever had (topped w/ tomatillo sauce) and the fiancee had a wonderful shrimp & crab chimichanga. Prices are great - you can get a two-item combo for $8.99 and most entrees range from $8-10. The service is spot-on and they are constantly checking up on you for refills and chips. read more

Went for dinner/drinks on Thursday night. Can't beat .99 margaritas! The restaurant was pretty packed, but we had the most fantastic service. Chips/salsa and drinks never went empty and the waiting staff continued to make sure we had everything we needed. Our dinners were delicious!! 6 drinks and two plates later, we paid less than $40. El Charro makes a mean fajita plate that is for sure. I used to order it with beef, chicken and shrimp but the last 2-3 times I have done the shrimp were fairly unclean and had an unappetizing "fishy" taste to them. This is still my place when I want fajitas in Turlock. read more

So sad to see this once very good restaurant fall on hard times. I took an out-of-town friend there for lunch on Monday and we arrived about 2:30 pm. I was shocked to see food all over the floor from the after lunch crowd. We finally found a table with no food underneath it, but there still were broken chips in the aisles. I ordered the Camerones Chipotle, one of my favorites, and my friend had Chile Rellenos. My shrimp came with a sauce so thick and gooey that I had to fight them out from under it. There was little chipotle taste in this mess of a sauce. El Charro had the reputation for 'the fire," but the flame seems to have gone out. How has a sauce that was mostly crema and chipotles turn into this mostly tasteless paste? My friend liked her chile rellenos, so maybe there are some things that haven't been affected. It was also pretty clear that most of the furniture and silverware have had their day. I had to bend my fork and its tines back into shape and the tables have lost so much of their finish they feel a little sticky. The only positive is that the staff are friendly and not overly attentive. Please, please clean this place up and teach the new cook how to make the delicate and delicious sauce that used to be served. read more

I give it two stars because the service was excellent and I liked their salsa. My husbands shrimp was overcooked so that was a real bummer. I ordered the chile rellano which was a bummer too. I think they used chile from a can because they were lacking in flavor. Beans and rice were dry and not much flavor either. To sum up this place I would say it is a Mexican Latif's, people come becuase that is what they have been doing for years and why change now even though the food is bland and boring. read more

Had a family meal with top-shelf margaritas (best ever with fresh lime juice) and plenty of food. Family from Southern California called it the best mexican food they have ever had. The side of guacamole was good with chips and everyone's combination platters were delicious. My favorite is the Tequila Lime Chicken when I feel like eating healthy, and Chile Verde Burritos the rest of the time. My wife enjoys the Tortilla Soup or Cheese Enchiladas, and my parents go on Wednesday nights for the ribs. May be hard to park, but well worth the wait and certainly the best restaurant (not just mexican food) in the area. read more

This place was just meh I ended up here because of yelp it has good reviews, however the food is not authentic Mexican food I mean Mexicans don't eat chimichangas. The servers are not very customer service oriented and you can hear them chitchat about work schedules and focus on other stuff rather than tend to their customers. Great consistent mexican food. Have been eating at El Charro for years. Service is consistent with other local mexican restaurants and the Molcajete is in my opinion the best flavored in all of Turlock. It is a little more simple than the other places, but by far my favorite. I get chicken & beef since you can't keep the shrimp feom continuing to cook at your table. Kids love the simplicity of the kids menu and my wife loves the bacon wrapped shrimp or shrimp molcajete (she doesn't mind her shimp over-cooked). Pair the meal with a Large dos equis and you will leave extra happy. read more

Delicious authentic mexican food. I lived in Turlock for almost three years and this was my favorite mexican restaurants. The service is fast and friendly. El Jardin is ok but more expensive then El Charro and I got much better service here. You have a waitress or waiter but everyone working will come to your table if they notice your low on chips or drinks. I use a lot of salsa and they always made sure I had enough. Went on Thirsty Thursday. The wait was kinda long and the place was super busy. But they gave us Margaritas while we waited. (Margaritas are $1 on Thursdays). Bean dip was AMAZING! Could have just eaten that, chips, salsa and drinks and been a happy happy girl! BUT...we ordered the Mocajete. It was excellent! Service was a bit slow and our actual waiter only showed up twice (once to take our order and once to help bring out the food) but the busboy was amazing and kept our drinks coming and our salsa cup filled. Chips were nice and hot and our table ate 4 baskets of them! Needless to say we were full up before our actual dinner came. But other than the slow service due to them being so busy, everything was fantastic and well worth the wait. We will definitely be back. Would have given them 5 stars IF the waiter had been a bit more attentive. :) read more

I visited the place last Sunday after church. The food was great. I felt like I was eating at home. Unfortunately the servers weren't too attentive. The 2 young ladies working that day were too busy staying by the register gossiping and I could hear them talking about the owner and a manager. (Very unprofessional.) I finished my soda half way through my meal and it never got refilled even though I was sitting close enough to hear the waitresses talking. My tortillas were gone after making myself a couple of tacos and I remained without tortillas for the rest of my meal. I felt neglected as a customer. While I was there, the place was relatively slow so I can only imagine the torment other customers face during peak hours. I suggest the owner reevaluates his management team's efficiency and the productivity of his waitresses. Other than that, the food was amazing. I take my hat off to the chefs and food preps. Can't say the same about the front-end employees. If the food is amazing but the service is lacking, I won't go back. Good luck Charro. read more
