I went in cause people hyped it up a lot and it was a hit and miss. The hostess was really sweet and kind walked to a part of the restaurant where the fan and AC hit you and that was a nice gesture. It came down to order my food the bus boy brought me chips and water very kind gentleman but my initial waiter ignored me for 55 minutes of the 1 hour i was there! I ordered the Chile con Carne and I can say it was ok the meat was tender the rice and beans were good but the tortillas were microwaved and wrapped in foil and that was a heart breaker. I also tried their flan and it wasn't sweet at all with all the caramel drizzle on it. The restaurant is beautiful tho very nice and clean and tidy. I'd probably try again but waiters pay attention to your customers

We arrived around 4:30 on a Saturday and found a table right away in the bar, where a lot of Kings fans were getting ready for the game. We started with margaritas. The El Cholo wasn't too strong and Zapata's widow was "sneaky" according to my hubby. For the main course we got the steak fajitas, which were HOT but the steak was a little chewy, and the Caesar salad, which had a disappointing salad dressing that lacked flavor. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The servers were attentive and the fire place was decorated for the holidays and was on, which added nice charm to the room ambiance.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There were a few TVs showing various games.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

First time going to this chain. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This place is large so good for large groups![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We had an after work event and they were able to accommodate our group of 10.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The menu seems authentic like you will find at many Mexican sit down restaurants and they show the year they first made that particular item. Guacamole is prepared table-side. I got the 1923 Sonora style enchilada which was different than the usual "wrapped" type of enchiladas. The fried egg on top was a neat addition to the red and green sauces. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Restrooms are nice and if you still need more drinks they have a bar to hang out at for a night cap.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

The food here is pretty good, but the service is even better! Shout out to the service people. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Nice airflow and what not.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] One suggestion, the battery packs in the tree lights are visible. Maybe tuck those away. Me gusta El Cholo!

STEPH JUDGEMENT: A great pregame option by Crypto arena if you're not feeling the usual suspects at LA Live. We happened to be walking by on our way to a Kings game when we spotted this place and the sandwich board outside mentioning their happy hour. We've only eaten here once before and liked it, but never thought to come here before a game since it's not right near the arena. But since we've been venturing farther afield to places like Pine & Crane, this place was actually very close. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Best of all, there were no crazy crowds like at yard house, etc, and their happy hour deals were quite good.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We bellied up to the bar and got some margaritas to start, and got some of their happy hour food, like a salad and quesadilla. The food and drinks were good, and the service at the bar top-notch. Would definitely try again!

Went on a Tuesday afternoon about 5pm before an event at Crypto. Super convenient to Pico Station Metro. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The building's exterior stands out as it's an old style Spanish building amidst high rises.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Initial reaction is "oh". [[HIGHLIGHT]]But once inside the ambiance is wonderful. Open roof in some portions of the restaurant (in the back where most customers are seated) provide lots of daylight. Warm "casa" vibes[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Immediately "thanked" by 'management' for coming as we were seated by a hostess. [[HIGHLIGHT]]At 5pm, the place was moderately full, by 6pm it was very full.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Happy Hour runs 3-6 and is even happier on a Tuesday as the El Chollo Margarita prices are lower by $2 more! We did 3 between the two of us! Service is good and we quickly received our margaritas, complimentary chips and salsa (salsa so so but I won't quibble since few freebies these days). I ordered the Cheese Quesadilla from the Happy Hour Menu without any extra protein and it was delicious. It was made from a large flour tortilla and presented in 4 slices with a small, but adequate portion of guacamole. It was really good - melted, decent quality - actually high quality cheddar! My dining companion got a combo plate - taco, enchilada, rice and beans. He was happy with his decision albeit doesn't like refried beans. Not sure if he could have swapped out. He forgot his jacket but our efficient server caught up to us as we hit the restroom before departing the restaurant. We would both easily go back!

Perfect brew!

Came to El Cholo DTLA before a show at the Novo Theater (5-minute walk to LA Live). Great food that is much better and cheaper than a nearby fancy Mexican restaurant that starts with a J. The Mahi Mahi tacos with Modelo n lime is the perfect match! They were hot and tasty. Ivan was our server and he was great! Fast, courteous, and spot on. He was juggling several tables but didn't skip a beat. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We sat in the back room near the bar to watch our Dodgers beat the Padres before the show, which was great.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The roof opens up a bit, so it was perfect.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Will definitely be coming back since the other restaurants at LA Live get crowded before an event.

It's a place that I been wanting to try to scratch it from my list. FYI this is my personal experience! I encourage you to try it for yourself My food had no flavor, food was cold, and definitely not for me [[HIGHLIGHT]]Service it's poor the only good thing it's the ambience[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Other than that that's it I would never go back again, I don't think the price matches the quality at all Surprised that it's being around for a minute I wonder if it was just a bad day?

Cadillac margarita with tajin a rim. Yum!!

After a day of shopping on the DTLA garment district, we needed a margarita and some delicious Mexican food so we ended up at the famous El Cholo. The drinks and lunch did not disappoint at all! Stellar customer service and friendly team of people, the restaurant was clean and the surroundings pleasant and upbeat. It was a joy and a pleasure for an impromptu lunch.

Customer service was okay, they only came to us once and that was to take our order, they also forgot something we ordered and had us waiting for it knowing it wasn't gonna come. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is nice and neat, feels very authentic and the bathrooms are nice as well.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] As for the food, the rice was very hard and flavorless, I've had many Mexican rice and none have tasted this hard or dry. The beans did not taste fresh or made properly. The rolled tacos were okay, maybe a bit too over fried. The chile relleno was good. way too expensive, could get the same thing at another restaurant for half the price have it taste better.

Steak Fajitas (Mountain of Sautéed Veggies)

For what's considered a Los Angeles staple, I'm not sure as to why. Maybe we dined at the wrong time or maybe this place has gone downhill over its 100+ years, but after our first time dining here, I'm not interested in returning. To start, we had cold, slightly stale chips with no salt. Luckily they provide salt on the table so I was able to make them a little more edible. The salsa was pretty average, decent amount of cilantro though which I always enjoy. Coming from Texas, I've had far better Mexican food at half the price. $30 for Steak fajitas with no rice and a total of 4 tortillas is criminal. The tortillas weren't even in a tortilla warmer. We received a mountain of sautéed veggies with the tiniest slivers of steak I've ever seen buried underneath. At least they were sizzling.

Lauren L.

Didn't realize how close the restaurant is to USC! Came to eat with a coworker during site work, I loved the food and the portion. As a non-Hispanic, I definitely found the plate to be interesting but my Hispanic coworker found it just okay. One thing I don't like is how they treated us versus the next table filled with gentlemen in suits. Service for us was different and worse, they did not offer us drinks or options, which was very unfortunate. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Otherwise location and ambiance were amazing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Mexican Chopped Vegetable Salad
Alyson W.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Great place for a big group.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were able to make a reservation for 12 without too much trouble and only a couple of days in advance. The margaritas were obviously delicious. I got the flaca (skinny) and it was very tasty, tart, and strong. I also had the Mexican chopped salad and it was absolutely delicious, with lots of fresh avocado and veggies, and a great vinaigrette. Service was quick. My only complaint is that the guacamole that they said was hot was mild tasting. It was still tasty though, and the accompanying chips were fresh and crunchy.

Tortilla soup delicious

Hey, are you even 21??…read more I'm gonna need to see some ID before I can let you enter... (Moments later) You can't possibly be 21, you were born in 2005... (Counting backwards on my fingers) Oh. My. God, I'm getting old!!!! ---------------------------- Alright now that we got that out of the way.... Listen up, & Listen up Good. Cause Tonight, Tonight, I'm setting the Bar straight! Now,.... Make sure to hang onto your ID, stay plenty hydrated & be ready to pace yourself... Cause we are about to Hit the bar running and go full throttle with some virtual bar hopping. But first, let's see just how many styles of bars there really are. -Ahh the classic, no-frills Dive Bar -The Cocktail Bar/The Martini Bar -The Sports bar, The BeerGarden -The Pub, The Tavern, The Biker Bar (make sure you wear your best leather pants) -The Hotel Bar, The Rooftop Bar, The Lounge -The Night Club, The Comedy Club, The Karaoke Bar -The Tiki Bar, The Wine Bar -The hidden Speakeasy (my personal Fav.) And of course, where even at 8am there's no judgement passed... -The Airport Bar. Speaking of Traveling... Bonus: Consider yourself lucky if your hotel room just happens to have a well-stocked mini bar. (These are getting fewer and fewer as I travel) Yeah, each bar listed above has its own vibe, and depending on your mood, your own individual style or even what kind of night out on the town you are looking to have... The type of bar you choose is important. But sometimes, the Bar Chooses You! Bar Magnolia quietly enters the chat. It was October 11th, 2025 and my wife & I just checked into Hotel Figueroa in DTLA. (EPIC REVIEW Coming Soon!!!) While we were waiting for our room to be ready, we decided to check out the Hotel Bar Lounge... First thought, Color me Impressed! High ceilings, Natural lighting, classy decor, comfy couches... Yeah, take your time with that room, we'll wait! So we plopped down onto their sofa, waited for a cocktail menu, and let the "we left the kids at home with Grandma; let's enjoy being kid-free for the night begin". $18.00 cocktails....Lets Goooo!! Looking back at the Photos, I can't exactly recall what we ordered... Was it a whiskey sour? Was it a paper plane?? Honestly, Who cares! They tasted great. I was sitting across from a beautiful woman. And we were responsibly adulting. What more could a guy ask for?? I'm glad you asked! After a long car ride in, sipping on water, then the first few sips of my cocktail, I suddenly had to go... Luckily, the restrooms are located just adjacent to the bar area and DAMN are they clean!! Hey, if a bar restroom is well taken care of, you know the place has Class.... And Bar Magnolia has the Class to Match! Of course, there is bar stool seating at the bar... (I usually prefer sitting at the bar as there's always some great stories to be heard and when it time to order another round, you can literally just cut out the... Middle Man (Aka waiting for your server to come check back in) In addition to the bar top stools, there are also low top tables, and a few couch-chairs with a low top table for more intimate conversations. Besides those $18 craft cocktails, a short, well Curated list of bubbles, vino and draft beers are all up for grabs. Unfortunately, we had stopped to eat before we arrived (bad move on our part), but next time, and THERE WILL BE A NEXT TIME, we will definitely partake in their food menu (cause damn, did it look GOOD!) So whether you are a guest of Hotel Figueroa, you are leaving the Crypto Arena after a concert and want to paint the town red, or you are simply just wanting to sit, relax and enjoy a nice cocktail at a classy, upscale, but not so pretentious Cocktail Lounge... Bar Magnolia is your place! Well, it's almost closing time, they are about to call for Last Call, so order us another round, bottoms up and Cheers to us!!!

Once there, I was told happy hour is only Monday through Thursday. I pulled up their own website and showed it to the server. The response? A shrug. No apology, no explanation, no effort to make it right. This is straight-up false advertising, and the lack of accountability made it worse. If you're going to change your happy hour, update your website and train your staff to handle it professionally. I shouldn't have to argue with a bar over their own posted information. Won't be back.

I finally was able to check it off, thanks to a hotel offer with a dining credit. Dahlia is the gorgeous petite space behind the larger ground floor restaurant space now called Cabrillo (formerly Caldo Verde). Dahlia opened as a bespoke cocktail lounge, then began to offer tea. Now it's just tea. There are five 2-tops and two 4-top tables. All food and beverage venues at the Proper used to be under the auspices of famed chef Suzanne Goin and her business partner/sommelier Caroline Styne. They are no longer affiliated with the Proper, but many of their dishes/contributions remain. The last named vestige of them is on the tea menu, "Suzanne's Deviled-Egg Sandwich". The tea menu has several options: Classic, with a seasonal mocktail, or with different champagnes. I opted for the Classic experience, because the mocktail had mocha, not my fave. Server Lluvia was clearly a Dahlia veteran; she offered a tea-smelling of all the teas that interested me as well as crowd favourites. I ultimately chose one of these faves, Mad Hatter's Tea Party, which had passionfruit and vanilla. I declined milk/cream, but did get lemon. There were rock sugar sticks on the table. It seems the selection of tea sandwiches and sweet treats changes every so often, although the vanilla bean scone, dried currant scone, Devonshire cream and apricot orange jam seem like constants. The sandwich selection at my visit were: cucumber, crab/creme fraiche, beet hummus on pita, smoked salmon and Suzanne's deviled egg. All were delish, the beet, crab and deviled egg especially. The sweet treats were: orange fig butter cookie, spiced apple brown butter crumble, cranberry frangipane hand pie, chocolate mocha macaron, pumpkin madeleine, plus the 2 scones. All were excellent. There were no leftovers. A bit pricey, but a relaxing and lovely experience. The room was not crowded when I visited, adding to the calmness of my visit.
