Just the hum of conversation, plates coming out of the kitchen, and a dining room filled with people who clearly know they've found a place to break bread. Er-- tortillas. I ordered the Pollo a la Plancha, and it was outstanding. Grilled chicken served with perfectly seasoned vegetables, fluffy and flavorful Mexican rice, and warm corn tortillas. I asked them to hold the melted cheese (because dairy and I are currently in a complicated relationship), and it was still one of the best gluten-free meals I've had in a long time. Fresh, satisfying, and packed with flavor. My husband ordered the Norteño tacos, which arrived piled high with toppings and absolutely loaded with flavor. And yes, they come with fries. I had never seen this combination before, but I can confirm it is life-changing. He enjoyed every bite. Before the main meal even arrived, we were hooked by the complimentary chips, salsa, and a bright green crema that came with a serious kick. Spicy enough to get your attention, but so good you keep going back for more. This is the kind of restaurant you almost don't want to tell people about because it feels like a secret. The Honduran food was excellent as were the sopes. I was shocked at how well the Pollo Con Tahadas fried chicken paired with the slaw and plantains. There was a perfect amount of crispy on the chicken breading which balanced the creamy sour sauce. Im a sucker for a house sauce and their fresh made spicy green salsa (use sparingly) was full of flavor and gave a punch to the sopes. There was plenty of seating, with even outdoor dining options. It was so incredible to visit a place serving Mexican and Honduran food. I got the fried chicken with green plantain chips and it was incredible. They gave us chips and salsa and the green salsa was to die for. The portion sizes are really big so I got two meals out of my order. The staff is incredibly sweet. I've have experienced Mexican Food in all four corners of the U.S. and abroad. Each location had its very own distinct flavor palate- if you've ever had Japanese Mexican food in the form of Taco Rice you'll understand what I'm saying. The flavor profile at El Comal reminded me exactly of how food tasted like as growing up as a kid in rural Mexico. I highly recommend the tacos al pastor and the carne asada torta. I was very impressed with the food at this location. To begin with the provide bith salsa and guac with chips. Each has a nice little kick at the end as well. Be advised that the guac comes in a plastic squeeze bottle which is unusually but very effective. The menu is in spanish and English. I went with the honduran fajitas. They were unusually but very good and I highly recommend. The dish includes onions, peppers, chicken, and fried plantains...yes fried plantains! It also comes with pickled onions and a pickled cabbage slaw. I was very pleased with my lunch (and it was a lot of food). While the location may scare people away, it shouldn't. Local hole in the wall that popped up where I grew up at a few years ago. Service from everyone(except one waitress I can't stand) is excellent. I'm not sure if it's still true as I haven't been by in a few months, but they have multiple cooks and one sucks. The owner and his sister and very nice people. This was one of those very casual places I have driven past for many years but, until tonight, had not tried. I'm sad I have not been here before but I'm happy that I have finally discovered this charming little place. It's very much a family restaurant and the family seemed to be there, kids and all. It gave the place a warm vibe of welcome and home. The menu is an interesting departure from the standard fare of other places but it's still familiar enough to be comfortable. Our waitress was happy to explain the menu items and allowed us plenty to time to make a relaxed choice. I had three of the tacos; carnitas, carne asada, and chorizo. They were served in double-layer soft corn tortillas that, unlike others, actually held the ingredients in place. The flavors were highly enjoyable and took very well to a few squirts of lime to enhance. I look forward to future visits to explore more of their menu. The evening was capped off with a friend of the family showing up with a new electric keyboard and "serenaded" the place with some classical piano music. Stopped by for lunch for the first time last week. Ordered the tlayuda, they didn't have it, so switched to mole oaxaqueno. The taste of the mole sauce was strong and peculiar, but that's absolutely fine, as taste is very subjective. But the whole entree looked very different from what the owner shows in the photo. Portion was the smallest I've had at any Mexican restaurant; I left hungry and had to eat a second lunch after that. For $13 (if I remember correctly) they gave me one very skinny chicken leg. The meat itself was so bland it tasted like it was boiled in plain water and the only taste came from the sauce. The rice was so-so. The restaurant itself is run-down looking, but clean. The menu had the usual tacos, enchiladas, tamales, etc., plus a section of Oaxacan dishes. My wife and I went there for lunch with a friend after church. We were given 1 basket of chips and salsa for 5 people which was no problem if the waitress would have came to check on us at all. She did not. It was not until another customer came that I was able to get her attention. We ordered our food and it took forever to get to us, (There was nobody there when we ordered), and when it did come the rice and beans were cold. Our friend ordered fajitas and they did not come out sizzling at all. When I told the waitress about it she said she would let "them" know, but did not offer to remake anything. Payed way to much for terrible food and service, which is a shame because if proper temperature, it would have been good food. Most horrible experience we have had in a long time! Worst restaurant I have ever been to in my life! They are under new owners and almost didn't take my restaurants.com coupon. We came in for dinner and were the only ones there. They served me margarita mix with no tequila. It was bright green and super sweet. I asked why I was given premade mix and he said she was in a hurry. Truth was she didn't know how to make a margarita and they had to find someone else to do it. There were two different people serving us. The female spoke zero English. Restaurant was run down, exposed outlets right next to booth, waitress didn't speak any english and just said okay if we asked a basic question, we ended up just pointing at pictures to order. Took 20 minutes for food to come out even though the place was empty and when it did it was luke warm. We tried to stomach the food but it was extremely saturated in grease (Burrito and Chimichanga). The queso was too salty, the steak was over seasoned and salty (I like grease and salt, but this was unbearable). While we waited for this food we snacked on stale grease saturated tortilla chips and average salsa. We tried to politely explain the dissatisfaction with the food, but it was pointless due to the language barrier so we paid way too much and left.
