Always love finding a good hole-in-the-wall restaurant when my wife and I travel. After reading some good reviews we decided on this spot because it was a short walk from our hotel and it sounded promising and cheap. BOY WAS I WRONG. So very disappointed. First off - the service was fine, no real issues there. The ambience was your typical brightly colored small cafe, and although the building was dated, it looked very clean. Smelled delicious walking in too! But the food is where they lost us. We had been traveling all day and were starving, so of course the chips/salsa/guacamole combo was the first thing we ordered. Chips were stale, and different - some thick yellow corn, some thin, some white corn. Salsa was watery, and I'm fairly sure that there was bell pepper in the guacamole (or maybe just really weak jalapenos?). I ordered the beef chalupa dinner. Chalupa shells were stale AND so very greasy although I'm not really sure where the grease came from. I know it wasn't from the ground beef - I'm not entirely convinced that it WAS ground beef. The consistency and taste was on track with what one might find at a taco bell, or a cat food can...mixed with sawdust to make it dry. No seasoning on the rice, and I realized after we left that I didn't even get my beans on the side! Tried to salvage my meal by dumping the chalupa contents out of their nasty shells and using the green chili my wife ordered on the side of her cheese enchilada - which she didn't even WANT in the first place but I guess folks around here think you have to have it with everything and so after insisting that she pick red or green chili we ended up with a bowl of what they CALLED green chili but it was just gross. I'm glad other people love it here, but I could've spent 1/2 as much at Taco Bell and then at LEAST I would've gotten some rice with some flavor in it and fresher chips and shells. Save yourself the disappointment and hit a drive through. read more

It's a little hole in a wall cafe in a tiny strip mall of 4 stores that you're bound to miss if you don't know where to look. GPS was no help. It reminds of another run down place, a Chinese restaurant in Germantown , MD. This place has seating but the "I need paint and an update "is the exact same. That said, don't judge this book by its cover. The service is good. The food fresh. The red hot salsa is hot but not crippling. Fresh,hot homemade chips would be a perfect compliment but what they served for chips was fine. I got the chicken enchilada smothered in green chili. It was a good size portion with beans, rice, sopaipilla, guacamole and posole. The flavor was very good, but the enchilada was soggy. Not sure why but it wasn't the green chili. All in all a good meal, good price. They could of used a second server as they got busier but well worth the experience. read more

The service here is 5/5! Our waitress was really friendly and attentive. The chips and salsa are awesome. The salsa was the star because it was the perfect spiciness for me. I ordered the breakfast burrito and my fiancé ordered the chile rellenos omelette. Both were delicious! read more

Sopapilla adobada was okay. Came out within 7-8 minutes. Sopapilla was probably frozen. The pork was chewy, not tender. Adobada sauce was spicy and flavorful but didn't do much to masque the underlying mediocrity. Place was darkish and empty on a Thursday night in January. Guacamole is a strange accoutrement for Chile sauces, me thinks. Not a fan of rice and beans as a side so I left that alone. I like Mom n Pop restaurants but this one is forgettable. I was intrigued by the Yelp reviews, and so we went, and this place blew me away! I had the papas rancheras with two over medium eggs on top and red chile-wow! Once I added a dab of soyr cream and refried bean to each bite, this meal was in my top 3 Mexican meals of all time, easily. There is so much flavor, and now I want to go back for the same dish tomorrow! My partner had the migas, and it was delicious as well. The sopapilla to end the meal just put the cherry on top. Do not be thrown off by appearances, and do not expect a crispy beef taco at any taco joint to blow your mind; that is what I noticed in other reviews. Stop #6 on the 10 hour/9 restaurant eat your way through New Mexico extravaganza. We quickly grew tired of the touristy area of town and asked a local where we could get some really authentic and genuine homestyle New Mexican food...he sent us to El Comal. El Comal is a little "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant located in a strip mall far from the touristy town square of Santa Fe. It is nothing fancy and kind of small, having less than 15 tables, but the food is amazing. We were greeted immediately by our server, and knowing we weren't locals she took the time to explain the menu in detail. Everything looked amazing, but knowing we had 4 more stops to make on our eating extravaganza, we split one very large entree. We ordered the following: Tamale plate: 2 pork tamales Christmas style- the masa was tender, flavorful and had the perfect consistency. The pork was tender, juicy, and spiced perfectly. Both the red and green chili tasted homemade and were perfection with just the right balance of spice, heat, and smokiness. Posole- a bowl of porky, hominy deliciousness. We had it with green chili which was a perfect compliment. Rice- The best rice so far! Beans- extra creamy, lardy, goodness. Sopaipilla- very rustic and homemade. The texture of the dough was perfect. I washed it down with a Modello Especial and the total for this amazing New Mexican food extravaganza was $13.95. This huge plate of food was more than enough for two hungry people to split and be very satisfied. The service was so warm and genuine and the food was so homey, eating at El Comal was more llke eating in someone's home (who was a really good cook) rather than eating in a strip mall. I would highly recommend El Comal to anyone who is visiting Santa Fe. It is a bit out of the way but will introduce you to real New Mexican food and the genuine hospitality and warmth of the people who live there. read more

Wow!! This place is easily one of the best Mexican food restaurants in Santa Fe! It's on par with The Pantry, The Shed, Maria's, etc. (maybe even better). The carne adobada is nothing short of amazing. The beans are rich and creamy. My husband had chilles rellenos. They were a masterpiece and delicious. The green Chile is divine. The $6 margarita are enormous, hand made (no mix), hand shaken and yummy. The atmosphere is charming and comfortable. The menu is huge, and breakfast is served all day. The server was lovely and welcoming. And the restaurant is spotlessly clean. We will be back for breakfast! read more

We looked around our hotel for something to eat at the end of a busy day. The ratings on this little cafe intrigued us, and when we could smell the deliciousness from across the street, we knew it was the place for us. I got a Taco salad and my husband got a combo plate. The chips and salsa were flavorful without being overwhelmingly spicy, the chicken in my Taco salad was tender enough to pull apart with a fork, and the combo plate was good enough for my husband to close his eyes and enjoy each bite. OK so I went back the next night and had chicken filled sopapillas. The red and the green sauce on them were fantastic! The green was nice and flavorful but not overwhelming while the red has a richness and flavor with a punch behind it that was very good. I love all of the food here. The staff is always friendly. Great place to see someone you haven't seen in a long time. My favorite is the American breakfast, which comes with ham bacon or sausage but I always substitute chiccharones. Side of chile with two eggs, papa's and a sopapilla. Yum! read more

Fresh into Santa Fe from CO Springs, we found this special little cafe not far from our hotel. Don't be put out from the location.
