Fresh into Santa Fe from CO Springs, we found this special little cafe not far from our hotel. Don't be put out from the location. I would recommend visiting here. We were coming through and had breakfast, very good portions and actually I had a kids portion of the huevos rancheros an it was plenty for a child or small adult. There is a lot of "New Mexican" food to be had in Santa Fe. It can be hard to choose where to eat sometimes. We went to Meow Wolf that day and the nice lady at the gift shop recommended to us Cafe el Comal. She said it was kind of tucked away and not as popular as the very nearby Tortilla Flats chain. But she said she preferred it and that it tasted more authentic than the other place. We went on her recommendation and she did not disappoint. The food was exceptional. The chili sauces both rare d and green were amazing. The sopapilla was expertly fried. The staff was very nice. It seemed like a locals only type place and nobody made us feel unwelcome. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an authentic New Mexican meal. Very very good stuff. And it's not far from Meow Wolf. So you can get back quickly and explore some more with a hand stamp for reentry. read more

What is not to love about El Comal? We found EC on our trip back from Denver to Los Angeles. I wasn't even hungry, but my husband was and we ate everything on our plates. The sopapillas were heavenly. The red sauce was so delicious. The tamales were light, delicate and tasty. Carne adobado was a new find for us. The memory of the food will motivate a return trip (although the drive is long!). Do yourselves a favor: visit this restaurant. It is more than worth the trip. Do not be deterred by its modest location. It is friendly, clean and delicious. My only challenge now is that El Comal is my new standard. read more

Forget those fancy restaurants downtown unless you're really just looking for ambiance. If you're looking for a tasty Mexican / New Mexican meal at good prices with great service, this is the place. This little cafe was clean - they even wipe off salt/pepper shakers and honey dispensers after every meal. It was busy on a Sunday around 11, but there was no wait. I had the blue corn cheese enchiladas with green chile. Wow! Fantastic. Hubby had a combo plate with tamale, enchilada and taco. He said it was excellent. The sopaipillas with honey, which you can request with your meal instead of plain tortillas, topped it off. Our iced tea glasses were never empty due to our server's attentiveness. Who would have thought we'd find such a gem next to a car wash. Good down-home cooking. They serve breakfast, too. Guess we'll have to try that tomorrow. read more

Went there one time with my grandparents. Great food I got the breakfast burrito with sausage and the way the sausage tasted was amazing. I get sausage in my breakfast burritos all the time and El Comal has the best sausage around. read more

HIDDEN GEM Hands down the BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN TOWN highly recommend eating here the food always tastes amazing and is fresh the employees are very respectful and friendly I have been there over and over and I have never had one problem my food is always the way I ask the employees constantly check on customers making sure they don't need anything and it's also not to expensive long story short if your looking for some Amazing food and service eat here I promise you won't be disappointed have been eating here for over 25 years and have never had 1 complaint seems like every time I eat there the food and service just get better and better from what Ive seen the Owners are constantly there making sure that whatever you order is correct and to your satisfaction also if you feel like having a beer with your breakfast, lunch or dinner they have a good selection this restaurant is a little hidden but it definitely is one of the best if not the best restaurant in town always clean and I always feel appreciated when I walk in and when I leave please give this restaurant a try I promise you will want to go back over and over! Disappointing after reading great reviews: flavorless chicken and beef tacos, sloppy taco assembly and pre-fab out of the box taco shells.

Ordered take out and was quite disappointed. For two burritos that came with no side beans or rice and one cheese crisp with chicken our bill was over $30 there were no chips and salsa to go and the red sauce was so hot it was in edible it taste like uncooked chili powder. the green was extremely hot but somewhat tasty. the tortillas were soggy and wet. What a local resource. This place was terrific. Rellenos stuffed with beef were exceptional, guacamole was good, with lots of cilantro. Good food, done exceptionally well. Could have had the A/C set a bit cooler. It did seem to take a long time, but I forgot that after I tasted the food. read more

Great Mexican food! We ordered the burrito Norteno and the vegetarian combo .... both smothered in green chiles.....both unbelievably delicious. Although located in Santa Fe, this restaurant reminded me of many small-town New Mexico diners. The server and manager were pleasant and hospitable, quick to take my order and quick to deliver. The menu is a combination of both Anglo and Hispanic, with burgers and sandwiches buddying up with enchiladas and tacos. I had the tacos and they were crispy and nice with well-flavored beef. Although there were tomatoes atop the tacos, they could have used more lettuce and cheese. The refries and the rice were excellent, but the posole lacked flavor. With water, the plate was under $10 and tasty. The posole is much better at Tecalote and tacos are much better at Tortilla Flats, but it was a good lunch. read more

Oh my goodness. I just experienced quite possibly the best meal of my life. I don't ever want to eat again because nothing could ever compare to the exquisite meal I just ate. I had the chimichanga with red chili. First off, they brought chips that were not stale (a problem I've frequently ran into in Santa Fe). They were nice and thick and looked homemade. The salsa was incredible. Spicy but still manageable. Taste was incredible. The entree was ridiculously big and so good. I took half the plate home with me. To top it all off they gave me a sopapilla. This is a must visit. read more

Excellent late breakfast. We shared the Carne Adovada plate with rice, refried beans, tortilla and sopapilla. The pork pieces were perfectly cooked and the adovada sauce was superb. This was my third visit to El Comal in the three visits to Santa Fe over several years. The food was excellent each time--one lunch and two dinners. My wife was with me for a previous visit and agreed that we must go again, again being last week when we vacationed in NM. She had tamales with green sauce, and I had enchilladas with green sauce, posoli. and a side pork tamale. We both had frijoles and rice. It was all really good. My wife had a Corona, and I had a Negra Modelo. The latter, which I had three times on this trip, seems to taste better up here in PA. Is it because it has aged more by the time we get it in the Northeast? I think the unpretentious style of food, service, and site at El Comal add to the satisfied feelling that one has escaped the tourist grid. It's worth driving out from center city a few miles. Look for it on the right in the block west of where the Avenida de Americas crosses Cerillos. read more

First off, this place is in a sketchy looking complex, behind the Hampton Inn. But don't let that stop you from eating here! Their sign says they've been in business 30 years, and I believe it. When it comes to heat and flavor they don't hold back. Service was surprisingly fast, despite the lone waitress during the dinner hour. Reasonably priced (you'll get enough to have lunch the next day with any entree). If given the option, get the sopapilla, smothered it in honey and be thankful you're alive to eat it. read more

We trusted the reviews, so we decided to visit and were not impressed. The chips and salsa were good as well as the sopapillas. The enchiladas and beef taco reminded me of Taco Bell/Bueno type of food. The pork chop meal and shredded beef nachos were good as well, but not a distinctive flavor. Just looking for good local New Mexican food. Saw this place right next to my hotel. Wife had chile relleno plate and I had the tamale plate. Delicious, the rellenos were huge and tasty and the tamales had a good combination of meat and masa. The red and green sauces were just right for us, not too spicy. Price was reasonable.
