If you want to eat the best Puerto Rican food outside of San Juan, come here and meet Louis and Jose... Amazing. Good. Generous and so very reasonable. Right now it is CASH ONLY but it is so cheap and good should be no problem. Delicious and they have Pasteles this time of year. YUMMY

Every time I've wanted to eat here they're closed on those days, so when my friends wanted to eat out, I convinced them to come to El Coqui and no regret whatsoever (although the food coma afterwards may disagree with me. The owner is super nice too and was nice to hear his passion for his culture and exuberance at me being familiar with Puerto Rican food. It definitely translates into his food. We ordered a lot to sample, but I would definitely get the pernil and the tostones. Smashed fried plantains that are lightly salted are delicious, as is the tender chunks of pork that are the pernil. In the platter, they come with potato salad, which was creamy and had chunks of egg in there, along with rice and peas, which complimented the meat well. Chicharron con pollo is their take on fried chicken, and the bone in meat is crispy and salty and delicious. Empanadas are on the blonder side, but goes great with the sauce they provide you. Can't really go wrong, but they are definitely masters of pork, so I would recommend the pernil. Definitely would also come back to try the mofongo. Cash only!

Both of our meals along with the dipping broth for the Mofongos and the two side sauces. The portion sizes were epic!

The boy and I came here for lunch last Sunday and were blown away. The owner of the truck was working the menu and was super friendly and helpful as we decided what we wanted to order. I ordered the Chicharron de Pollo with a side of rice, potato salad, and mofongos. This is the fried chicken dish but it isn't battered like American fried chicken. However, it was still crispy and delicious! The mofongos (mashed plantains) were crazy good. They had little bits of chicharron inside them and came with a dipping broth. Finally, the potato salad added a cold, creamy element that contrasted the crispy chicken and garlicky mofongos. My boyfriend ordered the Pernil with a side of rice, yuca, and maduros. The pernil is slow roasted pork that's loaded with tasty seasonings. It was crazy tender too. The yuca was cooked perfectly. The maduros were nothing short of unreal. They make their own maduros so the cook and flavor of these sweet plantains is really on point. We also tried the two sauces they offered. One was creamy and went well with the yuca. The other had a good kick to it and went well with EVERYTHING. :) Do yourself a favor and have a bite at this food truck.

Coming here, I had to get around a bus that had just hit an electricity pole while making a turn - and here I'm hoping that the pole won't fall on me and it'll be a sign of good things to come! And then I saw this white truck that's artistically decorated on one side and bearing a large Puerto Rican flag, and plain white on the other side where the ordering happens. Hankering for some good Caribbean food, a la mode Miami, I knew I had to stop here even if only to grab a fried empanada. Approaching the menu, I realized that they had a large offering - but look around, because blackboard menu is different from the picture menu, and that is also different from the printed menu. And oddly, and happily, they're all available. Friendly José took up my order, and was eager to prepare my request of a single $2 fried beef empanada, here called pastelillo. Once served freshly prepared, I sat down and took a bite, ... and I knew I had to order more. I went back, and ordered a $10 full plate of chicharron de pollo (aka chopped fried bone-in chicken), which had been one of my favorite plates to order from a Dominican place I used to frequent in Miami. The Puerto Rican version is identical, and just as amazing as I remember it being. Flavored with the lovable sazón criollo, and prepared country-style, de estilo campestre. While eating this hearty meal, I even spotted a guy next to this truck hand-peeling the potatoes into the bucket at high noon - I don't know about you, but I found this comforting, knowing that everything here is being made from scratch. I picked a side of perfectly fried ripe sweet plantains (maduros) and the plate was accompanied by white rice, delicious and soupy red beans (habichuelas), and a lackluster salad of iceberg lettuce and tomatoes with hardly any dressing that is actually typical of the Caribbean (they just don't do salads well in most down-to-earth places in the islands, unfortunately). Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better meal, as it was more than satisfying. I actually prefer this place over the more popular Puerto Rican restaurant on Lamar in North Austin, and many other Caribbean restaurants considering that I haven't found any other place in Austin that is able to replicate the flavors that were on point. PROS: + empanadas (pastelillos) + chicharron de pollo + maduros CONS: - no fresh juices, just sodas and water bottles - side of salad (but a salad is better than no salad, for this salad-loving guy)

It is an exceptional culinary experience, paired with the kind of warm, attentive hospitality that has become exceedingly rare in modern dining. The staff here are genuinely delightful, executing a service model that is both highly efficient and impeccably clean. Operating as a curated, staff-served buffet line, the setup allows for effortless customization while ensuring pristine presentation. The value proposition here is outstanding, offering remarkably generous portions at a very approachable price point. The spread is impressively comprehensive, featuring an expansive salad bar, a dedicated dessert display, and a rotating selection of hot entrées. The technical execution of the food is flawless: * The Sides: The mashed potatoes and corn are a revelation--whipped to a light, cloud-like consistency that delivers a perfect balance of buttery richness. * The Staples: The rice is impeccably seasoned and cooked to an ideal texture, serving as the perfect canvas for the deeply flavorful, expertly prepared beans. * The Plantains: The fried plantains are a masterclass in technique, boasting a beautifully crisp exterior that gives way to a tender, caramelized interior. * The Protein: The roasted chicken is a triumph--so succulent and deeply infused with flavor that it commands the plate entirely on its own merit. With a weekly menu rotation that promises new daily variations, this establishment has deservedly earned a permanent spot in my dining itinerary during my month-long stay in town. I look forward to exploring the rest of their repertoire.

The restaurant is located inside an old house along Main Street. The front room is 1/2 lounge area, 1/2 dining room, plus the bar area. There are two side dining rooms, the "green" room and the "red" room. Even the bathroom is cool! Great vibe and good music throughout the evening. Luckily, we got there early, and we're able to walk in without a reservation and sit at the bar. The restaurant was short-staffed, "staff on vacations" we were told, quite a few customers had difficulty enduring the service. They needed several other people there! Our bartender/waiter was Harper, and he did a fantastic job that evening, even though the place got really busy. The craft cocktail selection is extensive and very imaginative, many fun and exciting concoctions. We decided to start with The Navigator and a Banana Old Fashioned, both of which were delicious. The Navigator is a gin cocktail, with citrus and honey, a dash of grapefruit bitters and egg whites. Quite a tasty treat! The Banana Old Fashioned is a rum mixture, with some allspice, banana liqueur and walnut bitters. Delicious! We were also served a small amuse bouche of plantain soup that was a great first taste of things to come. After discussing the food menu with Harper, our food choices began with the duck spring rolls and the truffled burrata. The duck was perfectly prepared, and the spring rolls fried hot, not greasy at all. A side sweet and sour sauce on the side. The burrata ball was served well chilled, truffle pearls on top, drizzled with a nice balsamic reduction and served with thin garlic toast. Both dishes rate: amazing! Round two of cocktails included a Floating Petals, a vodka drink with very herbaceous notes, and the Volcano Ashes, a tequila/coconut/orange blend with black lava sea salt sprinkled on top. Both drinks were so good! We split the crispy chicken entree, a fried chicken breast atop risotto, covered with prosciutto and smoked gouda cheese. Delicious, but a bit salty for our taste. Almost every ingredient had a salt component, and the cumulative effect was the saltiness. For dessert we chose the Tierrita, a parfait glass filled with chocolate mousse and cookie crumbles... sweet and tasty, topped with a huge strawberry! A glass of local Texas Sangiovese accompanied the dessert and was a good pairing! So many other good things on the menu, we'd definitely go back to try more, cocktails and food! Recommend The Traveler Collections!

Some restaurants serve food. Others tell a story. From the moment I stepped into Twin Isles, I knew…read morethis was going to be the latter. The first thing that struck me was how intimate the restaurant feels. It's not a massive dining room where you're just another customer passing through. The smaller space creates a personal connection that allows you to appreciate Chef Janelle--not just as the person preparing your meal, but as someone who poured her heart into turning a dream into reality. That alone makes the experience feel special. The atmosphere is transportive. The music flowing through the restaurant, the Caribbean radio stations playing in the background, and the unmistakable sounds of Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and neighboring islands make you feel as though you've stepped through a portal. For a moment, you're no longer in Texas--you're immersed in the rhythm, warmth, and hospitality of the Caribbean. It's comforting, peaceful, and beautifully authentic. The menu is thoughtfully designed and incredibly approachable. Whether you're building a bowl or choosing a plate, the process is simple and easy to follow. Even if you've never experienced Caribbean cuisine before, there's no intimidation. Chef Janelle is happy to explain unfamiliar dishes, ingredients, and flavors, making first-time visitors feel just as welcome as those who grew up enjoying Caribbean food. That level of hospitality is becoming increasingly rare, and it deserves recognition. One piece of advice: arrive early. The food has earned a loyal following, and popular items sell out for a reason. Now, onto the meal. I kept my first visit relatively simple: a bowl with curry goat, sautéed spinach, macaroni pie, and rice and peas. It sounded like comfort food on paper, but what arrived was a beautifully balanced collection of flavors that complemented one another in ways I hadn't anticipated. The macaroni pie deserves its own moment. If you're expecting American-style macaroni and cheese, leave those expectations at the door. This is something entirely different. It has the structure and integrity of a baked pie while delivering all the creamy richness you hope for in macaroni and cheese. The beautifully browned layer of cheese across the top provided the perfect contrast to the velvety interior. Every bite was indulgent without feeling heavy. The sautéed spinach brought freshness and depth to the bowl, especially as it mingled with the curry goat. Speaking of the goat--it was wonderfully seasoned, tender, and deeply comforting. The curry carried warmth and complexity rather than overwhelming heat, allowing every ingredient to shine. I couldn't resist adding an extra serving of the house pepper sauce. That's simply my preference because I love spice. The meal absolutely stands on its own without it, but for me, the added heat elevated every bite, adding another layer of excitement without masking the incredible flavors already present. The rice and peas were far more than a supporting side. They were fragrant, flavorful, and satisfying enough to enjoy on their own. After finishing the macaroni pie, I mixed the rice into the remaining curry and spinach, letting it absorb every last drop of those incredible juices. It was one of those moments where every ingredient came together so naturally that you couldn't help but slow down and savor it. What impressed me most was how every item could stand confidently on its own while also contributing to something even greater when enjoyed together. That's a hallmark of thoughtful cooking. Nothing competed for attention. Everything complemented everything else. This was my first visit, but it certainly won't be my last. In fact, I'm already planning my return because there were several dishes I wanted to try that had already sold out. If anything, that's another testament to the quality of the food and the loyalty this restaurant has earned. Thank you, Chef Janelle, for sharing your passion, your culture, and your hospitality. Twin Isles is more than a restaurant--it's an experience that celebrates Caribbean heritage with authenticity, warmth, and extraordinary flavor. You've earned a lifelong customer.
