El Pachango is one of those hole-in-the-trucks you'd probably find in a Puerto Rican neighborhood in NYC. Their food pretty authentic: you have mofongo (a fried plantain mash), pernil (a slow roasted pork shoulder), arroz con gandules (rice and peas), carne frita (fried pork chunks) and more. I got the carne frita, the pork was fantastic and had a homemade taste you won't find at more upscale restaurants. Simple, but packs a flavor punch. The arroz was pretty good too, I would eat it all day. The owner(?) was super friendly and gave us samples of the food when we were figuring out what to order. He has an awesome radio-worthy voice! By the way, they're cash only. Honestly I'm surprised this is the first review. I'm hoping El Pachango gets more eyeballs on it, there's so much more to Austin than bars, tacos, sushi, bbq, and Asian-fusion. Long live comfort food.

A Masterclass in Authentic Puerto Rican Comfort. From the…read moremoment you step inside, this vibrant eatery transports you directly into the heart of a Puerto Rican grandmother's kitchen. It is an exceptional culinary experience, paired with the kind of warm, attentive hospitality that has become exceedingly rare in modern dining. The staff here are genuinely delightful, executing a service model that is both highly efficient and impeccably clean. Operating as a curated, staff-served buffet line, the setup allows for effortless customization while ensuring pristine presentation. The value proposition here is outstanding, offering remarkably generous portions at a very approachable price point. The spread is impressively comprehensive, featuring an expansive salad bar, a dedicated dessert display, and a rotating selection of hot entrées. The technical execution of the food is flawless: * The Sides: The mashed potatoes and corn are a revelation--whipped to a light, cloud-like consistency that delivers a perfect balance of buttery richness. * The Staples: The rice is impeccably seasoned and cooked to an ideal texture, serving as the perfect canvas for the deeply flavorful, expertly prepared beans. * The Plantains: The fried plantains are a masterclass in technique, boasting a beautifully crisp exterior that gives way to a tender, caramelized interior. * The Protein: The roasted chicken is a triumph--so succulent and deeply infused with flavor that it commands the plate entirely on its own merit. With a weekly menu rotation that promises new daily variations, this establishment has deservedly earned a permanent spot in my dining itinerary during my month-long stay in town. I look forward to exploring the rest of their repertoire.

We stopped by The Traveler Collections for dinner one evening during a recent trip to…read moreFredericksburg. What an amazing little place. The restaurant is located inside an old house along Main Street. The front room is 1/2 lounge area, 1/2 dining room, plus the bar area. There are two side dining rooms, the "green" room and the "red" room. Even the bathroom is cool! Great vibe and good music throughout the evening. Luckily, we got there early, and we're able to walk in without a reservation and sit at the bar. The restaurant was short-staffed, "staff on vacations" we were told, quite a few customers had difficulty enduring the service. They needed several other people there! Our bartender/waiter was Harper, and he did a fantastic job that evening, even though the place got really busy. The craft cocktail selection is extensive and very imaginative, many fun and exciting concoctions. We decided to start with The Navigator and a Banana Old Fashioned, both of which were delicious. The Navigator is a gin cocktail, with citrus and honey, a dash of grapefruit bitters and egg whites. Quite a tasty treat! The Banana Old Fashioned is a rum mixture, with some allspice, banana liqueur and walnut bitters. Delicious! We were also served a small amuse bouche of plantain soup that was a great first taste of things to come. After discussing the food menu with Harper, our food choices began with the duck spring rolls and the truffled burrata. The duck was perfectly prepared, and the spring rolls fried hot, not greasy at all. A side sweet and sour sauce on the side. The burrata ball was served well chilled, truffle pearls on top, drizzled with a nice balsamic reduction and served with thin garlic toast. Both dishes rate: amazing! Round two of cocktails included a Floating Petals, a vodka drink with very herbaceous notes, and the Volcano Ashes, a tequila/coconut/orange blend with black lava sea salt sprinkled on top. Both drinks were so good! We split the crispy chicken entree, a fried chicken breast atop risotto, covered with prosciutto and smoked gouda cheese. Delicious, but a bit salty for our taste. Almost every ingredient had a salt component, and the cumulative effect was the saltiness. For dessert we chose the Tierrita, a parfait glass filled with chocolate mousse and cookie crumbles... sweet and tasty, topped with a huge strawberry! A glass of local Texas Sangiovese accompanied the dessert and was a good pairing! So many other good things on the menu, we'd definitely go back to try more, cocktails and food! Recommend The Traveler Collections!

Portions are huge, so get ready to share at your table because most things do not "reheat" well. Seriously. Some restaurants serve food. Others tell a story. From the moment I stepped into Twin Isles, I knew…read morethis was going to be the latter. The first thing that struck me was how intimate the restaurant feels. It's not a massive dining room where you're just another customer passing through. The smaller space creates a personal connection that allows you to appreciate Chef Janelle--not just as the person preparing your meal, but as someone who poured her heart into turning a dream into reality. That alone makes the experience feel special. The atmosphere is transportive. The music flowing through the restaurant, the Caribbean radio stations playing in the background, and the unmistakable sounds of Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and neighboring islands make you feel as though you've stepped through a portal. For a moment, you're no longer in Texas--you're immersed in the rhythm, warmth, and hospitality of the Caribbean. It's comforting, peaceful, and beautifully authentic. The menu is thoughtfully designed and incredibly approachable. Whether you're building a bowl or choosing a plate, the process is simple and easy to follow. Even if you've never experienced Caribbean cuisine before, there's no intimidation. Chef Janelle is happy to explain unfamiliar dishes, ingredients, and flavors, making first-time visitors feel just as welcome as those who grew up enjoying Caribbean food. That level of hospitality is becoming increasingly rare, and it deserves recognition. One piece of advice: arrive early. The food has earned a loyal following, and popular items sell out for a reason. Now, onto the meal. I kept my first visit relatively simple: a bowl with curry goat, sautéed spinach, macaroni pie, and rice and peas. It sounded like comfort food on paper, but what arrived was a beautifully balanced collection of flavors that complemented one another in ways I hadn't anticipated. The macaroni pie deserves its own moment. If you're expecting American-style macaroni and cheese, leave those expectations at the door. This is something entirely different. It has the structure and integrity of a baked pie while delivering all the creamy richness you hope for in macaroni and cheese. The beautifully browned layer of cheese across the top provided the perfect contrast to the velvety interior. Every bite was indulgent without feeling heavy. The sautéed spinach brought freshness and depth to the bowl, especially as it mingled with the curry goat. Speaking of the goat--it was wonderfully seasoned, tender, and deeply comforting. The curry carried warmth and complexity rather than overwhelming heat, allowing every ingredient to shine. I couldn't resist adding an extra serving of the house pepper sauce. That's simply my preference because I love spice. The meal absolutely stands on its own without it, but for me, the added heat elevated every bite, adding another layer of excitement without masking the incredible flavors already present. The rice and peas were far more than a supporting side. They were fragrant, flavorful, and satisfying enough to enjoy on their own. After finishing the macaroni pie, I mixed the rice into the remaining curry and spinach, letting it absorb every last drop of those incredible juices. It was one of those moments where every ingredient came together so naturally that you couldn't help but slow down and savor it. What impressed me most was how every item could stand confidently on its own while also contributing to something even greater when enjoyed together. That's a hallmark of thoughtful cooking. Nothing competed for attention. Everything complemented everything else. This was my first visit, but it certainly won't be my last. In fact, I'm already planning my return because there were several dishes I wanted to try that had already sold out. If anything, that's another testament to the quality of the food and the loyalty this restaurant has earned. Thank you, Chef Janelle, for sharing your passion, your culture, and your hospitality. Twin Isles is more than a restaurant--it's an experience that celebrates Caribbean heritage with authenticity, warmth, and extraordinary flavor. You've earned a lifelong customer.
