We have lived in Fort Worth many decades and this is our go to spot for Tex-Mex. Let's start with the chips. Bubbly crispy chips with fresh hot sauce that no one can match. The Tex-Mex is flavored and spiced correctly with the right amount of hot. Yes, from time to time we will try others but always disappointed as this is the Tex-Mex we judge others by. Average Mexican food and queso. Service was good but took 30 minutes to get a table due to not enough help however there are 3 hostess.

The salsa is pretty awesome. I'll give this place that. I might even buy some for my lunch next time I'm in, if there is one. Other than that, though, I was mostly unimpressed. The food wasn't bad but wasn't great, either. It was just ok. The acoustics make talking difficult, but i do like the ambience. The service was just fine, no complaints. Overall, if you're needing a Tex-mex fix and are on a budget, this may be a good choice for you. If you're looking for muy sabrosa, you probably will be let down. read more

We have always loved el fenix & used them for catering and other celebrations. Xmas Eve this yr was a disaster! We ordered food for pickup Xmas Eve at 5 pm. I ordered 3 days ahead. When we went to pick it up they kept seating people & ignoring us. We waited 90 min. Finally we had to Leave since we had guests waiting for their food! Needless to say it was very disappointing! My wife and I decided to order combination fajitas to go , Wednesday night about 7. What a mistake. I called in my order but waited in their front area for about 30 minutes while 3 cashiers stood around throwing ice at each other in between ringing up customers. What kind of operation is this?? No manager in sight. Gee I wonder why?? After finally getting my order I didn't even get a sorry about the wait but just kept asking my name 4 times on the order. After getting home I found I had 4 small chicken fajitas and 4 beef. I've had fajitas for one that was larger. I called the manager wanting my money, back , they refused. Said on my next visit he would give me half an order. That didn't do me any good now. What a joke, wife and I split small order then made bologna sandwiches. The best part of our dining experience was definitely our server. I believe her name was Laura E. She was very friendly and attentive. The food however was not the best. I had read all of these rave reviews about the chips and salsa. At first glance I realized those reviews must have been sarcastic. After one bite my suspicions were confirmed. The chips were most definitely Doritos and the salsa may have been Tostitos. At least it tasted like it. We ordered the steak fajitas for two. It was enough food for three or four people. It only had a couple slices of bell peppers and huge pile of onions. The steak was tough and flavorless. My husband and I decided to have our date night at El Fenix (6391 Camp Bowie) Ridglea #6 in Ft. Worth. We've been there before and love the food. We asked for a booth. The greeter (young man) walked us to our booth, only to see that the seats were dirty. My husband asked could we have the seats wiped off. The young man said, "sure, no problem" and proceeded to wipe the seats off with his bare hands! My husband and I looked at each other and asked him to please get a damp cloth. The young man went and got a damp cloth and wiped down the seats. Soon our waitress came over and took our order. We ordered two cocktails, two Chile Con Queso and an Enchilada Platter, that my husband and I were going to share. We asked our waitress for an extra plate. When the waitress came back with our food and the extra plate, we noticed that the plate was dirty. The waitress had the nerve to take her bare hand and proceeded to wipe the plate!!! My husband asked her to please get us a clean plate. She left and came back with a clean plate. Halfway through our Enchilada dinner, we noticed that the plate was deeply cracked!!! We then asked the waitress why did she serve our food on a "CRACKED PLATE"? We had had enough and asked to speak with the manager! The manager came over and we told her all that we had just experienced! We also expressed our concern about being served food on a cracked plate, and how dangerous it could have been if we ate any chipped particles. The manager apologized and left. The waitress comes back to our table and tells us, that the manager took off our 2 Chile Con Queseo's off our ticket. All my husband and I could do was look at each other and say, "WOW"! The cracked plate was still sitting on our table! We paid our $40.04 tab, left NO TIP and walked right out of there. This was one of our favorite restaurants and we WILL NO LONGER RETURN!!!! read more

Awesomely reliable Tex-Mex. The food itself is more 3-3.5 stars, but everything else combined make it a solid 4. Truthfully, this is my Mexican Go-To on a work night. Good greasy plate, big ass strong margarita, and really prompt, friendly service. I mean, when it's been nine hours since your last meal, you just want to get in, get out, and get on with your life. No drama please; I mean damn, I just got off work. Extensive combination menu. You can tell there's been a real attempt to satisfy every taste, down to the choice of the chewy or crunchy pralines for sale at the cash register (can't go wrong with either; never been a purchase I regretted). Frank loves their picante sauce. They sell it in the gift shop and in area grocery stores, so Frank keeps it stocked in our fridge. Portions are so huge we skip the appetizers and dessert so I've never ordered either. Just the occasional cash register praline. What's good? All of it. A cut above your standard fare, and executed reliably with precision. One time though Frank couldn't finish his meal. So this I share to you: know that their ranchero sauce (it's a Tex-Mex thing) isn't that red sauce. It's more like a thinned out soup. read more

Went here Sunday for lunch and it's just as good as it always is! The ambience was great, our host was really sweet and attentive along with our waiter! Their menu has grown, and their chips and salsa are crisp and fresh (and not broken!) This is definitely a great place to catch a bite for lunch with the family or friends. The interior is very lovely and hacienda style, so it is very open and there is much room to sit. I definitely recommend--great service, food, and atmosphere! read more

Tried this El Fenix as an alternative to our usual suspects in the area and I was disappointed. I used to eat at the EF in downtown Dallas and always had good meals, but that was 6 years ago and not Fort Worth. Our visit to the Camp Bowie location was lackluster at best. From the food to the service, it wasn't up to par. Compared to all of the Tex-Mex type places I have eaten at around this area I would have to rank this location towards the bottom. And that is sad, because I went in with happy memories and thoughts of good food. Judging from some of the other reviews, my experience isn't that unusual. There's just too many other options for me to consider going back for another try. read more

Everything is great but the food, which is the entire point. The food is flavorless. If you are in the hospital on a bland sodium free diet, order from here. They don't use spices, either. No chili. There wasn't even a jalapeño offered on the plate of enchiladas I ordered. The picante sauce is bland. They even managed to make a serving of black beans and rice bland. The chicken enchiladas...big chunks of juicy unseasoned chicken wrapped in a tortilla and drenched in the blandest sauce imaginable. The brisket enchiladas had very little brisket in them. At least I think so. It was hard to tell because the meat was so bland, and they were topped with a lettuce and tomatoe salad which had not a drop of any kind of seasoning. No stars. read more

Solid 3.5 stars. The service is prompt and friendly and the menu extensive. The chips are good and the salsa is decent but not spicy. When we asked for a spicier salsa the waiter obviously went to some trouble to scrounge up other options from the kitchen. Gold star for effort but unfortunately nothing he came back with was any spicier. I was pleased with my dish tacos served with a generous amount of avocado. The Mexican platter was a little less inspiring. The staff all seemed reasonably friendly and helpful and our waiter was very good. This was my favorite Mexican restaurant for many years. I have no complaint about the food, personnel or service. However, they recently decided to ban ALL customers carrying concealed handguns, regardless of being legally licensed. They have 30.05 signs on outside doors, banning unlicensed open carry, and 46.03 signs near the inner doors, banning ALL weapons period. I consider this decision as a major mistake which will seriously hurt their business. They evidently have no idea how many of their loyal customers regularly legally carry concealed weapons for protection. read more

I love this place! I live 330 miles away in Odessa but visit this El Fenix every time I visit Fort Worth. I'll be eating at a Mexican restaurant in Odessa and wishing I was at an El Fenix. Nothing in our city comes even close to satisfying me the way El Fenix does. The service at this particular restaurant has always been fast and friendly. The food, the reason I come, has never disappointed me. The cheese enchiladas with chili con carne, beans and rice is my favorite and an order of queso compliments everything. So, at 613p I tried calling to place order. The phone just rang and rang . I tried calling 3 times. I got in my car and drove to El Fenix to place order. They were busy so I waited about 10 mins. Finally someone came out and I asked to place my order and was told Sorry, We are backed up in kitchen and are not taking any carry out orders!! I've been visiting El Fenix since I was a kid at least 20 years maybe more. Myself and my family love their margaritas and love their nachos and on this visit we also had the shrimp cocktail which was absolutely to die for, really delicious. Service is always top notch, never any surprises.. nothing's ever bad never been disappointed with anything I've ever ordered. One of the best things is the wait staff they're really good and I'm almost positive we've had the same waiter for the last 20 years, Palo is DEVINE! Love the food, hate the restroom! I am in a small Wheelchair and had to use the facilities. I couldn't get the wheelchair into the stall and close the door so I was exposed to anyone coming through the main door. They desperately need an update to the ladies restroom. I was there with a large group and didn't have to wait too long for the food. I got the Special Mexican Dinner. Comes with 2 tamales, 2 enchiladas, and a beef taco. I got beef enchiladas and queso over everything. I was not impressed with how little meat was in the enchiladas or the taco. The taco didn't even have enough stuff in it to fill the taco. Was only half fool. The enchiladas barely had anything in them. It was practically corn tortilla with queso. The tamales were alright. I didn't think they were that great but not the worst I've had. The queso had no flavor to it. Was extremely bland. The chips and salsa they provided, chips were good. Just about the only thing I liked. Then the salsa was odd in flavor. We visited with a party of 5 adults and 4 young kids on a Saturday afternoon. Ramon was our waiter, and the service he gave our table was comparable to a 5 Star Maitre 'D... Excellent service all around, and incredible dinner! The decor of the restaurant was really fun, classic, and enjoyable! I had the Special Mexican Dinner--- it was phenomenal. As a visitor from Virginia, but native Texan, I have been craving this cuisine for years. My family has been visiting this particular El Fenix location for at least 35 years.
