First of all to find such a great spot like this jalisco in the area is great to have especially if you are visiting and/or staying in the area like I was. I had a limited amount of time, in the morning, to get a breakfast and coffee in before my training just down the street. I came in to this jalisco and although it was not my first time (I had come through years prior when my sister lived in the area) I felt the same service and courtesy from the staff as soon as I walked in. This place is spacious and on the weekends I am sure it gets busy! When I was there on a Tuesday morning there were constant folks coming in to grab their to-go orders or popped in to meet up with other friends or coworkers before their shift. I ordered breakfast tacos as soon as I sat in a booth and was noticed by the waitress. I think from start to finish of my meal I was there less than 30 minutes and had already devoured my three tacos and three cups of coffee. The waitress kept coming back to refill my coffee and before I knew it I was super caffeinated which I appreciated. Parking was easy and I even noticed about 6 spots in the front that have the jalisco only parking painted on the parking lot which tells me they get a ton of folks that come through. read more

Wide variety of Mexican dishes to choose from. We got large menudo and omelet w/cheese and hame in it, papa's and refried beans w/ side of bacon. Menudo nice ratio meat to liquid, mild seasoning, not too greasy. Give it B+. Omelette papa's plate: large portions, potatoes cubed, not overcooked, beans excellent, cheese in omelette melts nice. This place is pretty vintage, which caught me off guard at first! But, the food was good. I especially like their chips and salsa. The salsa looks a little different than I've seen at several Mexican restaurants, but was a great pairing with the chips. **Run Away** The Salsas are watered down with no flavor. It's so bad that the red and green salsa tastes the same. We ordered breakfast. I always judge a Mexican joint by their "huevos rancheros" it's the basic breakfast plate that is hard to mess up. The eggs were under cooked. I love a runny yolk. But when the egg whites are still clear that's messed up. The potatoes were under cooked as well, almost raw. The bacon was burnt. Damn. This place has such nostalgia for me, have so many great memories and the look of this place is original as hell. I love it. But the food is horrible. The service is great and it's being run by the same people from years back, which was nice to see. They just need a real cook in the kitchen. Used to be good Tex-mex food a couple of years ago. Well cups and salsa are still really good but the food is trash. Seems like whoever they have in the back preparing the dishes are just in a rush to get them out. Let me explain. I ordered the migas plate which came w refried beans and your choice of flour/corn tortillas. My dish was steaming hot, potatoes were undercooked and overall lacked seasoning. My friend ordered the flautas which came w rice beans and a salad w sour cream. Flautas were under cooked (not crispy) rice was overheated and dry. This truck/trailer is actually located at the corner of huebner and Vance Jackson but it's not showing correctly on Yelp. I pass by it almost every day b/c it's super close to my place but for whatever reason I never checked it out. Today I decided to come here for a quick bite on a whim and was not disappointed at all. After carefully studying the menu and reading the reviews, I decided to order the Mexican hotdog and regular pollo taco, $5 for both not bad. Please note they do have a $5 minimum requirement for using credit cards. Service was fast. It only took about 5 mins for me to get my food. Since I live close by, I took them home to eat. I have to say both the taco and Mexican hotdog were tasty. But my favorite is deff the Mexican hotdog! I had never had Mexican hotdogs before. I like hotdogs to begin with but those Mexican hotdog was intense. There was so much flavor going on with bacon bits, sour cream, onions, etc. Deff a winner!! I pretty much licked my hands and I wasn't ashamed of this not so lady like behavior. I can only image how good the food would taste at 3AM in the morning after a few drinks. And that's how late they open on weekdays. On Friday and Saturday nights, they open until 4AM! They are closed on Sundays. Been by this place many times over the years but never stopped. Stopped by for a quick breakfast and got one of my go to dishes-- a torta. For me, flavor aside, a good taqueria has to have three things in the menu for me to consider it not a run of the mill place-- tortas, soups, and shrimp cocktails. So I had to get a torta as I am a nut for them. Every place has breakfast tacos and refried beans etc so I go for the less likely candidates. They get it right in a way that many places don't by grilling the bread inside and out so it gets a little crispy. Good beef and ingredients and very tasty for $6. The coffee was quite weak though. Went to pay thinking it should be about $14 for the food +$3 per drink, $20+tax, under $22 total, and she gave me an outrageous price of $24-25. I questioned her and she claimed to have asked if we wanted cheese, and we said yes it's $1 extra for cheese! 1. I don't remember her ever asking anything about cheese, or her saying for $1 extra + the menu pic shows it with cheese. 2. I call it a bs excuse because it rings up as $8.98 minus $1.00 for breakfast price, that's still $7.98!! That's probably the price regardless if it had cheese or not. The whole time I'm questioning her she's looking annoyed as if I'm being a cheapskate! I'm not a cheapskate, I just hate dishonesty. My favorite Mexican restaurant near where I live. The mini tacos are great, service is excellent, and rest of the food is not half bad either. I am always looking for a place that serves mini tacos like I get closer to the south, and El Gallito de Jalisco does pretty good, though further south, I get the beans and avocado without request, though El Gallito de Jalisco accommodates. One thing I'll note is for whatever reason, the food tastes better at their food truck. I cant put my finger on it, but the food truck they have off Vance Jackson and Huebner is great. The Mexican Hot Dog and the Burritos there are killer, but even the tacos just taste slightly better. The food at the restaurant is good too, and maybe it's an atmosphere thing because the best tacos I get on the border are served from a truck there, so maybe it's just me. I wonder if the waitresses in the other restaurant spoke English because this one didn't. No matter, I dug down deep and conjured up enough Spanish to order our food and non English speaking staff is a good sign anyway. My hunch was correct. Migas covered in cheddar cheese with papas and beans. The migas were very good with plenty of corn tortilla, onion, peppers and a tangy cheddar that you could actually taste. I feel like most "Mexican" food in San Antonio is just boring bland Tex-Mex, but I'm so glad I finally decided to try El Gallito, everything is perfect and delicious. The beans are full of flavor, the rice is well done and well seasoned. The guacamole was creamy and complimented the food well. The quesadillas were cheesy and delightful, they hit the spot for my cravings. My roommate got the chicken flautas and was very impressed. I enjoyed the dining room aesthetic of the restaurant. I wasn't sure what to expect from El Gallito. The restaurant sits in a little shopping center adjacent to a bar and a pawn shop. This alone would make most people opt for something else. But I am not like most people. I love the thrill of not knowing whether a place will be the breakfast of my dreams or play the starring role of my next nightmare. The restaurant was empty, but had a lot of walk-in business happening throughout our time there. The decor was your usual Mexican flair except this owner must like Futbol because there was a lot of soccer related posters adorning the walls. Okay, here is the lowdown on the grub. Migas: cheesy, eggs a little overcooked, had a good flavor, not greasy and filling. Refried beans: very tasty, had pieces of whole bean in it, which gave them that homemade taste. They were not greasy and hearty. Very robust flavoring of bacon in them. Chorizo and egg: Chorizo had a very spicy flavor. The eggs were also slightly overcooked. But the chorizo was plentiful and had an intense aroma that just made the plate all the better. Fried Potatoes were your usual Mexican breakfast variety and nothing to write home about as were the tortillas. The salsa was too mild for my taste and had a slightly acidic flavor to it. This is just one restaurant on my quest of trying a new place every week, but I was pleasantly surprised about this place and I can see myself eating at El Gallito again. read more

Ample portions, delicious sides! This place is all decorated up to resemble some town in Mexico, San Miguel de Allende?? I'm not sure. The beans are delicious. They're fresh, and full of manteca- not that great for you, but delicious. The potatoes are cooked to perfection, but they're a little light on the quantity. I've had more in the past, I think they were just running low. The service wasn't too hot, but I still got my food quickly. I was disappointed that there's a $5 minimum on credit card transactions, which is in violation of the credit card merchant agreement. I've reported them to get that changed. They sell palletas at the front- they even have the weird flavors, like pickle or pecan. I opted for horchata- so yum! The place is moderately clean. Mini tacos for the win ! They have a great taco truck up the street on Huebner and when I found out they had a restaurant, I had to take my parents here! Their mini tacos are seriously soooo good and packed with tons of flavor , dressed with the most tastiest grilled onions, fresh onions, pico, limes and cilantro. Mom got a small cup of pozole garnished with limes and cilantro, she said the flavor of the pozole was delicious with good flavoring and soft tender meat and homony. Dad grabbed the Gordita plate with pastor, he enjoyed the red pastor, refrained beans and rice , he said everything was great and being this is our second time coming here I'm positive this will be our go to Mexican restaurant for sure ! Great place for cheap and good breakfast tacos. It's $1.50 for a breakfast taco, but if you get 3 of the same kind, it's cheaper. I like to get their potato & egg, chorizo & egg, or their sausage & egg. All come fresh out of the kitchen and are made to order which is how I like em. They definitely don't skimp you on the contents which is always nice! There have been times where our orders have been mixed up when ordering to go and we got bacon instead of sausage etc. The service is pretty quick, but there are days where it'll take a bit longer when they are busy which is understandable.
