I have been a loyal customer for many years and just recently i stopped in for a seat at the bar experiencing minimal service, low quality microwaved tasting food. I left a tip on my card accordingly. Apparently, the manager or waiter felt they can change my tip amount to their liking for a higher amount. I called and complained to the manager first and he basically said they changed it to their liking and no correction will be made! I complained to my credit company, and they adjusted the non-approved charge. .The point is it wasn't about the money it was their audacity and the principal. So check your statements for their dishonesty. I will no longer be a faithful customer. read more

I had dinner here with friends tonight and it was as good as it's been in years past. The establishment has both indoor and outdoor seating. I called earlier in the week for reservations but was told that it's first come first serve and that seating shouldn't be a problem. True to their word I was seated almost immediately. I sat outside and it was quite pleasant. There was a good breeze and the area was nicely covered/tented. The only slight downside was that it was rather noisy and hard to hear much less have conversation. Most tables outside were filled and we were seated in close proximity to one another. After a little leaning in to chat as well as getting our orders placed, diners came and went so it brought the noise level much lower. They are located on South Broadway and have their own dedicated parking lot which is a plus. However it is not very big and fills up. I was unable to get a spot in their lot but found street parking easily nearby. The service is good, and the chips and salsa came almost immediately as you looked over the menu. We ordered a mix of enchiladas, a combination plate with a taco, burrito and enchilada, as well as a combination plate with an enchilada and a tamale and a burrito. An especially nice touch is that you're given a small cheese quesadilla before your entree comes. You're also given a complimentary sweet banana chimichanga drizzled with honey with a side of whipped cream for dessert! The portions here are nice and I ended up taking half my entree home. Food was very good & service was good but when I received my bank statement I was significantly overcharged even after leaving a generous cash tip. I have no recourse with the restaurant nor my bank since I paid with a debit card. I'm very disappointed and it hurts to lose that money. Lesson learned. I need to start off by saying that the waitstaff at this restaurant is incredible. From the moment you sit down, one comes over silverware/napkins, while another brings warm chips and salsa. Drinks and food come out promptly and plates are cleared quickly. The waitstaff's effort and happy mood did not go unnoticed! The mole enchiladas is the best thing on the menu - great flavor and portion. We also got the Chimichanga, three amigos and Sarape steak. I liked that the chimichangas were 3 individually rolled pieces vs. a giant style burrito. The three amigos gives good variety if you don't know what to order (burrito, enchiladas Suzas and mole). The Sarape steak was our least favorite, didn't have too much flavor and the quality of the meat wasn't that great. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience, atmosphere and complimentary app + dessert they give. For upstate NY, it's a great place to go for a quick meal. read more

Love El Mexicano! Classic festive Mexican experience. Staff has been there forever and always friendly, efficient and HARD working. Food is consistent, margaritas can be hit or miss ... depends who the bartender is that night. They include a mini quesadilla starter, banana dessert and offer tequila shot at the end of the meal, what a party! They do have a small parking lot but often it's full. I was immediately greeted and seated at the bar by who I assume to be a manger or owner, who provided great service and routinely checked on me. I sat at the bar enjoying the ambience and friendly atmosphere, when the guy who seated me brought out a complimentary quesadilla appetizer completely free of charge! Once I finished my Cerveza and main course, I was brought out free dessert on the house and a tequila shot as well!! It was good food, and a beautiful homey atmosphere. The free chips and salsa, we're good, but I found the salsa a little sweet. I ordered the Chile Rellenos which came with rice and beans. there were two Chile Rellenos, one with ground beef and one with shredded chicken. The ground beef really had no taste and was kind of grainy and bland. A little more cheese might've helped. It was not spicy at all. The chicken one was very spicy. I know that chilies can vary greatly In their heat level. It was the shredded chicken that was very spicy not the pepper when you separated them. The chicken was also dry, as chicken breast can be. The rice had good flavor, but the beans had no taste at all. two other people besides myself are from the Southwest, and they agreed with me about the beans. This is a place I've eaten at a number of times. It's New Years Eve early and is packed. We had a waiter and what seemed to be a nice older man helping who was a manager. Chips and salsa is ok. The basic. Mexican beer not on draft but cold. Ordered a combo platter. It wasn't hot. Chili relent was cold. But I just ate it. Didn't complain. My wife on the other hand ordered a beef, chicken and shrimp fajita. No sizzle or fresh fun. Beef was well done previously thick cut nasty steak. Literally big hunks of meat without seasoning and barely chewable. Chicken was likewise big nasty old chunks. Shrimp were an odd color and complete mush. I told our waiter I was a long time customer and asked what was up. He immediately got the nice old man manager wh said what do you want money off your bill. I said no. Just be aware that you served something awful. He came back 5 minutes later and said he tried it and it was good. We got the check. Didn't get our free fried banana. Just a clear get out. Back in Saratoga for a volleyball tourney. Our tradition is to go out to El Mexicano after the first day or competition. The Good: We were a large group, walked in at 8:30 and these guys accommodated us no problem. The food is reliably good and fast. The service was pretty damned good considering there were 20 of us. There will be the occasional forgotten fork or refill, but these guys are pros. The Bad: I had called earlier and requested a table and was told it would be first come, first served, which I totally get considering the size of our group. I'm sure there are more authentic, refined Mexican restaurants (though nowhere near me). But I have eaten here twice now and both occasions met or exceeded my expectations. The food is elevated street food and more. Not high cuisine, but standard fare well executed. I lived in L.A. for about ten years, and before moving East, I visited my favorite Mexican restaurant and begged the kitchen to show me how they made their refried beans. They consented and I carry that prep with me to this day. El Mexicano apparently knows it, too. Like the proper execution of an omelet can tell you the competence of a cook, refried beans and rice can say a lot about a Mexican kitchen. The service is welcoming and prompt. The house delivers amuse bouche -- it's the same term in Spanish -- within moments after you are seated. Yes they bring the usual chips and salsa, but they also bring a warm quesadilla. A nice touch. The extensive menu offers the classics: tamales, burritos, tacos, etc. all in varying combinations. But the house also offers, por ejemplo, snapper huachinango, and moles that are worthy of "sus abuelas", and more. Las abuelas aprobarian. The room is festive and colorful and there is a nice selection of music to set the mood without being intrusive. Just as you're looking for the check, you are presented with a beautiful, bonus "sweet chimichanga," a delicious creamy banana wrapped in a lightly deep-fried flour tortilla, drizzled in honey and a dollop of whipped cream.
