El nopal is a super popular and rapidly growing Mexican food establishment spread throughout the Lousiville area and it surrounding cities. This particular location is off Preston Highway in a shopping center where hillview is right before the bullitt county borderline. As mentioned el nopal has grown to so many locations that I can't possibly count them all. However this hillview location is one of the originals. It has at least been here for 20 years. I can remember when my wife and I was teenagers working retail nearby. On paydays we would cash our checks and go to this el nopal practically every Friday. As years passed by we haven't frequented this establishment as much. While it is still close to our parents and our kids schooling their are other el nopals closer to our residence. But we still do come from time to time For nostalgic reasons. We recently had them reserve the back room for over 40 people when we got my youngest and 5th born daughter baptized. They were easy to work with and were very prepared. Honestly the least stress I've ever been when reserving a big party room. They did great. For the food me and my family like most Lousiville families love us some El nopal. There is a reason this place has gotten so many local locations. To me they have the best complimentary red salsa and chips out there. Always Fresh and always tasty. Me personally my go to meal is the enchilada supremas which is 5 different type of enchiladas. I always throw a curve ball and order all 5 of mine with cheese and just red sauce and cheese on top. I'm picky but it's good. Plus life hack. Once all the enchiladas are gone you have a huge plate of queso cheese left that you can then use the complementary chips on. You're welcome! My wife has sampled the menu much more than me as has my oldest daughter. They love everything they have tasted here. I'd say the menu is traditional Mexican. So if your favorite Mexican establishment has a meal than el nopal Probably does as well. Overall great local franchise with tasty food and this is a nice location. The location has always been nostalgic for me because we've been here so many times and for so many years but I was completely impressed and blown away of how well they handled our large party reservation. Great job to all workers and staff!

After a day at the Bernheim Forest we were hungry! My nephew, the local, recommended this place and I was down for Mexican food. It was okay. We were seated quickly outside (well, we just grabbed our table and told them we'd be sitting there). They were quick to bring plenty of chips and lots of salsa. However, the salsa could have easily been something just poured from a can. It was lacking........ everything. It was..... tomato sauce basically. But we were hungry so we ate it. I ordered a combination plate with a taco, enchilada, rice & beans. My Mom had a taco, tamale, and enchilada, rice & beans. My nephew had the chorizo chicken (something made up I'm sure, but he likes it). Everything was good (the rice could have used more seasoning)! The tamale had way too much masa or dough for those of you who are unfamiliar (this is coming from a tamale connoisseur; a family that makes tamales). The staff was attentive. My niece ordered a sopapilla. It was flat, not like we're used to. Ours are fluffy from puffing up in the grease. It also had sugar, cinnamon and whip cream on top then cut in fours. She liked it. Overall, the food is good. It also seems to be a popular spot as people were coming & going the whole time we were eating.

    Very colorful and welcoming inside!

So I accidentally went to this Mexican restaurant because my GPS to me to this restaurant instead of one with a similar name, and boy am I glad I went inside! The outside could use a major uplift but inside the atmosphere is very welcoming and very colorful. The tables and bathroom looked clean but more importantly the food was very tasty! I ordered the combo fajita which was great, but I wish the beef was cut in slices as that's how it's traditionally served, instead of shredded little pieces. Overall, very good, I'll come back again soon!

Happier and happier every time we go. We arrived a few minutes short of 3:00, the restaurant wasn't very busy. We sat on the bar side which was quiet but we were attended to frequently! We were expecting to order off the dinner menu because we ordered after 3:00 and the lunch menu ended at that time . Most restaurants wouldn't even offer the choice to order off the lunch menu after 3:00, but the server gave us the choice. We both selected the dinner portion as the food is too good to pass up. I chose of my favorites, chicken flautas. My boyfriend got the chicken chimichanga. The food was brought to the table less than 10 minutes after we ordered, how can you possibly beat that kind of service? We were checked on twice, drinks were refilled and lunch was fantastic. I can't recommend this location enough!

Their Ceviche has little to no flavor and cocktail de camarón tastes like pure ketchup lol. I do not recommend this place for seafood.

This is the first time a server has not only realized that I was on a date, but actively worked with me to make sure it went as smooth as possible. We paid the bill, left, and I made sure I gave bro a 50% tip. I've worked in restaurants for 2 years now and I've never seen a server as amazing as Pedro. I got the strawberry, it was so pretty, excellent presentation and absolutely delicious! I will say it was more like a dessert to me and I would have preferred to have it after my meal instead if before but that's just me. We got there between 6:30 and 7:00 and it was really busy, luckily our friends got there first and grabbed a table. They had already had a round of drinks while waiting on us but it took a while for anyone to come over to greet us or refill their drinks but again it was busy and everyone was helping everyone. We ended up splitting the birria platter and still had plenty of food to take home which we just ate last night as leftovers and were still absolutely fire!! I think the egg roll and quesadillas were my favorite over the tacos bc I love the melty cheese. I also ordered a small side of queso which was surprisingly a little spicy which I really enjoyed. They even surprised us when my BIL ordered a small margarita and it came out in a fish glass (see photo). It was so unexpected but also so cute at the same time ... it's really the little things like this that bring joy, okay? LOL This place was absolutely amazing and I can't wait to try it again.

When we arrived we had a brief wait before we checked in, and were seated on the second level. Our server was excellent, our service was quick and he was always around without hovering. It was bitter cold outside so instead of my usual margarita ($14+) I opted for a beer ($6). We started with the salsa trio, one of my favorites with handmade assorted chips. It includes three salsas, somewhat spicy, sweet tomato and tomatillo - the spicy and sweet were my favorites. Next we ordered the tacos el carbon and carbon burrito - pricing is expensive! We both ordered our steaks medium rare. My tacos had a beautiful presentation, the meat came out on a skewer and smoking from the hot coals. All toppings were repeated on the plate. The steak was overcooked and tough though. Had a nice smoke to it, but very chewy. My husband enjoyed his burrito but wasn't the best he's ever had. They also had a mariachi band walk around but they had "tips" all over their instruments and clothes. Overall we had a nice meal but the price point doesn't equal the food quality.

I believe it used to be a different restaurant and what time however I decided to try the Peruvian menu today so it's lunchtime, but I was given the option to utilize the larger full menu, so I got some fried fish which came with a salad and some rice on the side. The rice was plain white rice. The salad was some lettuce and tomato with a nice light vinaigrette. It was really delicious and my fish was cooked to perfection. It was a fillet and it was fried with some different spices and lightly battered it was absolutely perfect sweet/juicy easy to delightful so after I finished my salad and my fish, I was left with this large bleed over rice and I just didn't know what to do with it so I asked for a serving of beans on the side and I got the pinto beans and they were nicely flavored with the some queso and they had run it under the broiler to mop the cheese. It was delicious it rounded out my meal, and I will tell you that haven't eaten that whole plate. I left no crumbs. It it did not leave me over full and I ordered flan for dessert and the flan is beautiful and creamy with custard with a dollar above whipped cream and a cherry on top the caramel sauce at the bottom is really, really beautiful. It has a light caramelized flavor from the sugar melting with the phlegm the flan itself it wasn't bad. It was OK a little egg but sometimes that does happen or rather the dessert is really nice. This is a place that I would come back to and also bring my family for a family meal in the restaurant is large and inviting. It's good for a night out with a friends and your family and here I am on my solo journey for food and it works for me too so when you have an opportunity come on down and try this place out my server was amazing. She was so sweet and she put up with my limited Spanish use and she did come and check on me periodically she didn't hover, but she didn't just leave me to be looking around for somebody to help me either so that was a good balance even when she started to get busy with more customers coming in like I said come down and try this restaurant out. It's really nice the atmosphere is very very nice. They didn't have pictures of the other food because I was so hungry and I ate every last thing on my plate
