El nopal is a super popular and rapidly growing Mexican food establishment spread throughout the Lousiville area and it surrounding cities. This particular location is off Preston Highway in a shopping center where hillview is right before the bullitt county borderline. As mentioned el nopal has grown to so many locations that I can't possibly count them all. However this hillview location is one of the originals. It has at least been here for 20 years. I can remember when my wife and I was teenagers working retail nearby. On paydays we would cash our checks and go to this el nopal practically every Friday. As years passed by we haven't frequented this establishment as much. While it is still close to our parents and our kids schooling their are other el nopals closer to our residence. But we still do come from time to time For nostalgic reasons. We recently had them reserve the back room for over 40 people when we got my youngest and 5th born daughter baptized. They were easy to work with and were very prepared. Honestly the least stress I've ever been when reserving a big party room. They did great. For the food me and my family like most Lousiville families love us some El nopal. There is a reason this place has gotten so many local locations. To me they have the best complimentary red salsa and chips out there. Always Fresh and always tasty. Me personally my go to meal is the enchilada supremas which is 5 different type of enchiladas. I always throw a curve ball and order all 5 of mine with cheese and just red sauce and cheese on top. I'm picky but it's good. Plus life hack. Once all the enchiladas are gone you have a huge plate of queso cheese left that you can then use the complementary chips on. You're welcome! My wife has sampled the menu much more than me as has my oldest daughter. They love everything they have tasted here. I'd say the menu is traditional Mexican. So if your favorite Mexican establishment has a meal than el nopal Probably does as well. Overall great local franchise with tasty food and this is a nice location. The location has always been nostalgic for me because we've been here so many times and for so many years but I was completely impressed and blown away of how well they handled our large party reservation. After a day at the Bernheim Forest we were hungry! My nephew, the local, recommended this place and I was down for Mexican food. It was okay. We were seated quickly outside (well, we just grabbed our table and told them we'd be sitting there). They were quick to bring plenty of chips and lots of salsa. However, the salsa could have easily been something just poured from a can. It was lacking........ everything. It was..... tomato sauce basically. But we were hungry so we ate it. I ordered a combination plate with a taco, enchilada, rice & beans. My Mom had a taco, tamale, and enchilada, rice & beans. My nephew had the chorizo chicken (something made up I'm sure, but he likes it). Everything was good (the rice could have used more seasoning)! The tamale had way too much masa or dough for those of you who are unfamiliar (this is coming from a tamale connoisseur; a family that makes tamales). The staff was attentive. My niece ordered a sopapilla. It was flat, not like we're used to. Ours are fluffy from puffing up in the grease. It also had sugar, cinnamon and whip cream on top then cut in fours. She liked it. Too expensive, mediocre, Mexican food. Prices are very high for the portions served. $7 for two churros that weren't completely cooked. If you decide to call in an order for carry out check all of your food before you leave the building. Ours are rarely correct. Our most recent order was wrong and when we pointed it out they took all of the food to the back and then brought it back with the missing burrito. This time there was another entree left out that had originally been in the bags. read more

So I accidentally went to this Mexican restaurant because my GPS to me to this restaurant instead of one with a similar name, and boy am I glad I went inside! The outside could use a major uplift but inside the atmosphere is very welcoming and very colorful. The tables and bathroom looked clean but more importantly the food was very tasty! I ordered the combo fajita which was great, but I wish the beef was cut in slices as that's how it's traditionally served, instead of shredded little pieces. Happier and happier every time we go. We arrived a few minutes short of 3:00, the restaurant wasn't very busy. We sat on the bar side which was quiet but we were attended to frequently! We were expecting to order off the dinner menu because we ordered after 3:00 and the lunch menu ended at that time . Most restaurants wouldn't even offer the choice to order off the lunch menu after 3:00, but the server gave us the choice. We both selected the dinner portion as the food is too good to pass up. I chose of my favorites, chicken flautas. My boyfriend got the chicken chimichanga. The food was brought to the table less than 10 minutes after we ordered, how can you possibly beat that kind of service? We were checked on twice, drinks were refilled and lunch was fantastic. My wife and I called in our Carryout order and was told that it would be ready in 10 to 15 minutes and it was ready when my wife arrived. They had plenty of employees working and ready to handle your needs as you walk in the door. The food was delicious and pricing was very reasonable. Ordered deliver through the website. The DoorDash driver was great (not knowing at first it was going to be DoorDash) but we were missing our chips and salsa. We also ordered queso that was in the bag, but no chips. When I called to let them know they told me I should be going through DoorDash for this refund. The chips and salsa are free, that's not possible. So I told them we still want them so I will come back up to get them. When I got there I asked for a half and half tea. The started to charge me $3.99 and then an extra $.99 because I only wanted half sweet. I told them it's outrageous for me to pay almost $5 for a drink when they are the reason I am having to come back up here in the first place. He stared at me for a moment asking me if I'm going to buy it or not. I have never had service like that in my life after they are the ones who messed up the order. I did not take the three bags of food back in so had to pay for another, they would not take my word for it. the queso was not there. they also missed salsa on the person's order behind mine. I absolutely love this place they have free chips and salsa their beer is big and cheap the service is always friendly and nice the food is excellent I love it. We usually go on Friday nights and I get the combination meal. I get a two tacos and burrito and rice and beans. That costs about 9 dollars. It is a great deal and great food. I'm not actually a fan of ElNopal and try to avoid them. I prefer more personal, family operated and authentic southwest, Tex-Mex or Mexican food and this is run of the mill typical American Mexican which I realize many people like it's just not for me. Having said all that I have to give props to this location, and the super hero level efforts of the staff. We were out Christmas Eve and did not feel like cooking but also a bit guilty for making people work on Christmas Eve. Nothing around us was open so we decided to go in to this El Nopal. Apparently, so did everyone else in the region! There was only three people serving, busing, and acting as Cashier, host, and I think helping to cook and the place was completely packed. You could tell the staff was being run ragged but to their credit they did an awesome job, swerving with a great attitude and trying their best to keep everyone well cared for. The food was typically ordinary and unmemorable but a step up from fast food. The decor was rather uninspired too but that is aslo typical for this chain. As we were checing out we comented on the under staffing and they said with exasperation that they usaually are slow on Chirstmas Eve and were overwhelmed. But I thought they did a great job and deserved the larger tip we left! Well done and Merry Christmas! I hope the management there knows how hard you worked to give your guests great service with far too few servers and staff. read more

Went yesterday for a few tacos and decided to sit outside due to the Covid restrictions..The service was very good but the tacos were a huge disappointment. Each taco probably contained less than a teaspoon full of meat. I have eaten here many times and never experienced this poor quality of food. Hopefully next time will be better. Good bi-lingual servers who provided quick service. Food is quick, in typical Mexican fashion. Salsa and chips were okay, nothing spectacular. Offer both a regular and a "hot" option unprompted. My co-worker got the grande burrito, which was huge, and said the chicken was excellent. 2 others had Salads and they were in the fried bowls and packed full if goodness. Another had a small burrito with some custom topping and another the spinach and mushroom taco which was thoroughly enjoyed. I myself had the lunch carnitas, which was plenty big itself. It came with rice, beans and 3 flour tortillas. Rice was decent, little bland, beans were good and the tortillas seemed like ones you could buy yourself at the store. Honestly very mad and disappointed! I ordered a to go order and got the steak fajitas and paid $21 for it. And when I went up there I had two orders to pick up and had to stand there for 15 minutes with the kids while my first order sat on the table cold till I got the second order finally. Literally got home and there was no tortillas so basically couldn't even eat the food. I called up there and the manager spoke with me and said WELL WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO ABOUT IT! And hung the phone up on me.... Now he doesn't know I work long hours in healthcare and this is the one night I had home off work this week. It would have been nice to have a simple apology and a refund since I ended up not eating. Always fast, friendly, clean, & delicious! Had my wedding reception dinner here & used the back, private room. Spacious & plenty of room for my entire family & wedding party. Even when I drop in for an order to go, it's quick, fresh, hot, & service is great. Love the people, the waitstaff is awesome, & I'd give 'em more stars if I could. :) I know they have live music on some nights...I haven't been on those nights, but I've heard it gets pretty loud. read more

I wouldn't even give it one star if I didn't have to. The food is good, but the service is HORRIBLE! I called to speak to a manager and they hung up on me, I thought ok....maybe accidentally. Then I called again.....they picked up and hung up. Then I called again.....they picked up and hung up. Then I called again......they picked up at hung up. I called for a FIFTH time and asked for a Manager and they said he doesn't come in until 5:30om. I said ok, what's his name.....proceeded to hang up once again. I then called back and spoke with a woman and by this time I was furious! I asked not to hang up on me not so nicely mind you because I wasn't happy. She proceeded to tell me that the manager doesn't come in until 5:30, ok but I just need to know his name and she wouldn't tell me. I didn't receive my entire order and I wanted to talk to someone. They are RUDE and they honestly don't care! I know this review won't help at all but I'm pissed that I paid for our order and we didn't even get everything. read more

I like Mexican food however this restaurant is anything less than good. My experience in here was awful. In the beginning of my visit all seemed to be going well. Soon after I ordered the atmosphere went down hill. The waiters began to mingle with customers that were rude and out of line. Other customers in the restaurant were witnessing the situation at hand. I believe the manager was even involved. The food was just as awful. The quesadilla I ordered was extremely greasy and overcooked. Born and raised in Louisville , Ky and visiting on a recent trip I was wanting enchiladas and decided how bad could this place be. Honestly this has to be the worst Mexican food I subjected myself to. I ordered the Enchilada Supreme dinner plate and it was delivered as the Soup Enchilada Entree. They were soggy and soaked in red sauce to the point it had the consistency of tomato soup. A few bites into the meal I decided no more soup and excused myself to use the restroom where I found another experience I rather not have encountered. Restrooms are dirty and toilets did not flush. I have tried to rack my brain attempting to remember anything pleasant about this place but am unable to.
