This was my first experience with El Pollo Loco and people were right, it's just 1 notch above Taco Bell on a good day and a 1/2 notch better than them on a bad day. I had the experience of a good meal and a bad meal all at once. Which doesn't surprise me with fast food. I actually expect that and am never disappointed. I'm usually just happily surprised when it doesn't happen. On this particular trip, I went with a friend. Our cashier was detailed. She made certain that she got our order down correctly by asking us more specific questions about what we were ordering. We weren't the only customer she did this for, but I appreciated it. Sometimes with fast food, ordering can be lost in translation. We ordered 4 rice, bean and cheese burritos, 2 side orders of mashed potatoes and gravy, and 2 churros. I don't remember what size we ordered for the burritos, but they looked like to be like a kid-sized version of a burrito. It was small, but incredibly filling. I had one down and I was so filled that I could barely eat through the second burrito. There was just the right amount of rice and beans and the cheese was present. Not like other fast food locations where the cheese is so melted into the beans you can't really detect it. This was gooey and wonderful. The mashed potatoes and gravy were nothing to write home about it. I've made instant mash that's tasted better than this. The gravy had no flavor. I ended up giving mine to my friend who absolutely loved it. So I guess if you're into that kind of mashed potatoes, El Pollo Loco is your new friend. The churros were stale. I took one bit out of it and thought I chipped my tooth. It was painful to eat. Truly an exercise for the jaw! I am however, a huge churro lover, and a very committed one and at my way into a stale churro heaven. Would I go back? Definitely. For a fast food place it was good. The chicken was very good. The salsa and salsa verde is plentiful at the side bar. However, the booths I went to sit at were dirty, so I picked another table and found it to be a little dirty also. I cleaned it up and sat there anyway. The pictures make the food look larger and better. I'm talking about the pics on the drive through window menu that you order from. It's a little deceptive. The guacamole side looks like its a cup, it's not even an 1/8 cup. I'd like to get something that's at least close to what I'm ordering from. :-( As far as food goes, it is the healthiest and tastiest option out there. I am a fan and recommend chicken breasts and a side salad with iced tea, no sweetener. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. I been to that pollo loco and I've had a good experience but today completely disappointed me. I decided to order drive thru and there was one car ahead of me and they were able to get her order after 8 minutes (literally). She moved forward to pay at the window and I moved to the speaker and I head a mumble saying to wait. I waited for 10 minutes and I had no response. So I pulled at the window and the lady infront was still waiting for her food. After she pulled out I told the guy (RUSSELL) that I did not order because I had to response and there was another boy with him at the drive thru window and they seemed confused as to what was going on. They did not apologize for the long wait and I ordered 3 pice Thing and leg and Nachos. He DID NOT ask what kind of drink I wanted and continue to talk to the guy that was with him at the window. At this point there was two other cars behind me also WAITING TO GET THEIR ORDER TAKEN. What made the situation even worst for the car behind me was when he asked for the car behind me to pull back at the speaker to order and the driver told him there was few cars behind him. The two guys seem focused on their business rather than getting the job done. After getting my order I told RUSSELL that my meal came with a drink and I wanted an horchata. He laughed (I was able to hear because the window was open) and made an ugly face telling his coworker (the other boy) that I wanted an Horchata and rudely making comments about my request. Really sad that El Pollo Loco serves yesterday's chicken in the mornings. So this is about the 5th time that I have come by to get some "freshly grilled" chicken from el pollo loco at 11am and every time I have received dry (or burnt) chicken that has the texture of yesterday's leftover food. It's really disappointing that a company would do this to their customers thinking hey would not notice. The other thing that is unethical is they have a sign up on their dry erase board that says if you rate them 5-stars on Yelp, they will give you $5 off your meal. So they are buying 5-star ratings. Students and faculty alike love the food, and it's always GONE....Ash (the General Manager) is a pleasure to work with and always goes the extra mile to make sure the order is just what we need, and all of his staff is very helpful. They deliver even to our SLO campus, and their charges are VERY reasonable. The food is always fresh and hot, and the delivery is on time and the charges correct. And they never forget to send plates, forks, serving tongs and spoons and napkins, either! I've been eating here since 2014. Food is always good and the service has been decent. The last two times I was there in June 2018 the service was horrible through the drive thru. I asked if the guy was in training to explain his ineptitude, he said no. The second time I asked if I could just get 2 chicken breasts and 3 thighs. The lady said just a min Ill check.... 1 min later still not back, a min in the drive thru feels like an eternity. A guy asks me for my order. I tell him the same thing and that a woman was helping me. He tells me just a min. At least 30 sec later he's not back either. I was the first customer. Seems like everything would be ready when the doors open. The order counter was filthy with dried liquids of different colors. The dining area had dirty tables, broken tables with filthy napkins underneath the legs to make them balanced. There were still cleaning the drink fountain nozzles (sitting on the counter, soaking). There was still no salt when I left at 10:30am. I wasn't even greeted when I ordered, so I wasn't sure if she was even ready to take my order. Went through the drive up window last night . I ordered one of there low Cal salads . Not being sure how they dress the salad , I ordered the dressing on the side and requested an additional dressing . I was informed that there would be an extra charge for the dressing . I agreed to the charge and pulled to the window. The guy at the window had no other greeting other than saying the amount due and sticking his hand out . While unpacking the salad , I noticed that there was no dressing at all and no fork . The salad was not bad after I went to the fridge and added some dressing . I used to be a fan of this place, but last time I came here I experienced such extremely rude and offensive customer service that I won't be back until I find out that this has changed. I walked in to order and waited at the counter for several minutes, only to have one of their employees start taking someone else's order that just walked up. I love El Pollo Loco, and this location is a good one. It's clean, and in a convenient and safe location. Their food always tastes fresh and their chicken is always moist and excellent. I come here a lot when I need something quick, but don't feel like greasy fast food. Their avocado chicken salads are really good and the avo is perfectly ripe. They have family meals that come with chicken, sides, a big salad, and dessert. It's a little pricey, but not much more than KFC, and 100x, better and healthier food. If you like flan, they have a great one, and they also have churros. They have a few kid's meal options (quesadilla, chicken leg, bean burrito, etc.), but you do have to ask, as they're not listed on the drive thru menu. Also, ask for a couple sides of pico de gallo and avocado salsa with your meal, they're both really good! read more
