Food: pretty good. Atmosphere: fabulous. Service? Ah, well... If I hadn't stood by the kitchen waiting to find our server, and if at least two other employees hadn't asked whether I needed help, we still might not have our food. I try to be careful about leaving poor reviews. It's not always fair because things happen. I've been to El Poquito many times because it's within walking distance, has decent food, and a fantastic atmosphere. About 95% of the time, however, the service is either bad or outright horrendous. This last visit (May 2026): Two of the four of us arrived promptly at 6:45 and ordered chips and salsa. We waited 15-20 minutes for the chips, which seems like a long time--even during the busiest part of the evening--for scooping some chips into a bowl and spooning out some salsa (verde style, and tasty). But seriously, that's a long wait for such a basic order. The other two members of our party arrived around 7:05, and we ordered our meals around 7:15. To be fair, our server was very nice and attentive. He stopped by a few times with the assurance that "the food will be right out." Want to guess what happened next? If your answer was "nothing," you'd be spot on. Around 7:55, I went inside to find our server. Again, he was very nice. I stood near the ordering computer between the bar and the kitchen. Two different employees asked if they could help. I explained how long we had been waiting. One of them--who I think was the manager--disappeared into the kitchen with a "let me go see what's going on." I waited for her to come back with an "it will be right out," but, like our food, she never made it back out of the kitchen. Another waiter (also very nice) found our server, who said, "You don't have your food yet?" He then looked over at the table of three very hungry people (including one 10-year-old) and responded, "Fuck, really?" My reply, somewhat under my breath, was, "Yeah, really." Blah, blah, blah... eventually the food arrived. The manager apologized and removed some drinks from the bill. read more

We went to El Poquito yesterday for Cinco de Mayo. Parking is metered on the street, but I definitely recommend parking in the small lot around the corner behind the Chestnut Hill Grill and walking over. The place was PACKED wall to wall because of the holiday. The wait was about an hour, so we decided to order food to go instead. I ordered a strawberry mango margarita from the bar, and honestly, I've never had a margarita taste like a tequila sunrise before. It was thick and just not good. Jesse made it, and when I mentioned it didn't taste like a margarita, Chyna (not sure of the spelling) attempted to remake it. The second one was slightly better, but still not what I'd expect from a margarita at a Mexican restaurant. We ordered the 4 taco platter (about $21). You can only choose two of the same taco type. We tried the short rib, chicken, and pork tacos along with the street corn. The tacos were okay maybe a 5/10. They fell apart. The black beans and rice were actually good. The street corn, however, lacked flavor and didn't really resemble traditional street corn. Barely any cheese or seasoning. Even the lime served with the tacos was so dry we couldn't get juice out of it. Overall, maybe the kitchen was overwhelmed because of Cinco de Mayo, so the food just didn't have that extra care behind them. First impressions matter, and this one unfortunately missed the mark for us. On the positive side, the space is large inside, they have a nice patio/garden seating area outdoors, and reservations are available. We might go back and try taco Tuesday. read more

The place was pretty empty inside, so we were able to easily get a table without a reservation. We sat at the bar so we could watch both the Knicks and Phillies games, which made for a fun atmosphere. To start, we ordered the salsa and chips. The chips were fresh and crispy, and the salsa had a nice flavor with just the right amount of kick. For our entrée, we had the jerk chicken fajitas, which arrived sizzling and were packed with flavor. The chicken was tender, well-seasoned, and paired perfectly with the peppers and onions. The side of rice and beans looked well prepared ahead of time, like they were sitting under a heat lamp for a minute. Other items on the menu looked more delightful. I have been avoiding this restaurant because of the low Yelp rating. However, my friend booked this for a group dinner on a Friday night. It was a great experience. The server was great and attentive. The atmosphere was nice. We sat inside, but the outside was crowded on a beautiful night. The food was wonderful. I had the jerk chicken fajita. It isn't really the traditional jerk chicken, but it is still tasty, cooked perfectly with a good seasoning. The fajita was very good. My kid got the ground beef salad and ended up finishing the entire thing. Others at our table got fish tacos and enjoyed them also. The server came by several times, even on a very busy Friday night. I recently made a reservation online and, unknowingly, it was booked for an outdoor table. When we arrived, it was 30 degrees, rainy, and extremely cold. Although it was clear this was an honest mistake, the restaurant made no effort to accommodate us with an indoor table. Despite the conditions, we did our best to enjoy the meal--and I want to note that our server, Michael, was fantastic. We were told that guests "sit outside in this weather all the time," which was surprising given that not a single other table was seated outdoors during our visit. Unfortunately, this lack of willingness to assist or adjust left a very negative impression. I visited this establishment, on may 5th. I wasn't surprised when they said there was a 30 to 40 min wait. I was surprised that the entire time i sat and waited for a table for 2 that the 4 tables at the front stayed empty my entire wait and then after i was seated. also the table out front i was waiting for my table at became my table. so there was no need to have me wait, let alone turn away so many people because they didn't not want to seat people( in my opinion). myself with other had questions and conversations with each other as to why so many tables were empty inside yet they were telling everyone they were booked. I gave 3 stars because the servers are always wonderful. I've been going to El Poquito for over 3 months, even had my daughter' s birthday brunch there. Love it. However on Sunday (5/17) there was no air conditioning. OK, went back today thinking it would be fixed. It's been in the mid 90's for 3 days. But no air conditioning. And no air circulating. I sat outside in the shade and had a Margarita as I was waiting for a bus. Could not believe the restaurant was still open. Absolutely cruel to employees and I will not go back until it is fixed. This place is cute but I won't be returning. My partner and I came on an early Friday evening and because of his cute it looked outside, I requested a table outside. It was just two of us so we were placed at a table next to the door to the restaurant. Okay not a problem with the exception of the table being uneven and wobbly so he took some tissue to try and combat the issue but it didn't work. We asked for 2 glasses of water as it was pretty warm on July 14th and received 2 glasses of warm water. My glass had something on it, so we asked for 2 new glasses of water with ice and initially received two glasses of ice with the same glasses of water. So we against again and received what we requested. I ordered shrimp tacos but didn't realized they would be served cold so I wasn't too happy with that. Superb. Whereas most Mexican themed places go for spice and salty food. Here you really got the flavor of what you were eating. It's 33 degrees and we ate outside in their heated tents. My wife actually had to remove her jacket because it got so warm. Don't be afraid to make reservations for outside. Watch out the tacos are packed. A normal person only needs 2-3. I got 4 Mahi Mahi because tacos normally are t super filling. Especially when it comes to fish. Each taco though had a fat ass piece of fish on it. You'll see in the photos. I don't like taking good photos but I had to. I didn't think you would believe me. I got the fish grilled and it was perfection. My wife tried it and she was very pleased. She isn't really a fishy person. She got the pork tacos. Those were also packed to the hills with meat. She said she should've only gotten 2. I got the virgin margarita with coarse salt on the rim. I don't like a lot of mock tails but this was delicious. We got a jumbo crab dip for our starter. That was delicious. Again the food was not super salty and you could really taste it. We topped it all off with churros which came with a cinnamon ice cream. These were also huge. So we left with a $100 bill completely stuffed. That's a good time to me. Came here for lunch in Chestnut Hill on Father's Day. We didn't have a reservation and were told the outside patio was full, but had no problem getting a seat inside in a huge booth. The inside was very spacious with a lot of wood used in their design concept. The large bar in the centered added a nice focal point and additional seating for singles or couples. We all decided to get a drink. I got a Margarita Gose by a local brewer, while the others got Sangria, margarita, and old fashioned cocktails. All were enjoyed. You don't get free chips and salsa here, so we ordered some Queso Dip (chipotle queso topped with pico de gallo and served with chips). Immediately upon sitting the appetizer on our table I noticed the glaring unequal distribution of Queso to chips. The bowl of Queso, while tasty, was quite small. It was very quickly consumed by a table of four, with us scrapping the sides of the bowl trying to get a little more on the many remaining chips. The Queso size needs to be reevaluated for its cost. For entrees, we ordered a set of 3 tacos as did our friends. They almost always get the Nashville hot chicken tacos (Valentina honey hot sauce, ranch, pickles, flour tortilla) and did again today. I tried a bite and they were good. Not too hot, but enough kick. We ordered the Korean Steak tacos (flank steak, bulgogi marinade, avocado, red chili sesame, corn tortilla) as they sounded so good on paper, but did not deliver in actuality. All you tasted was hot from the red chili sesame. All of the other flavor profiles were just lost. I don't know if the bulgogi marinade was forgotten or what on the steak or the chili was just that heavy handed, but you could not taste it. The tacos were one note and quite disappointing. My husband took a couple bites and just couldn't deal with the heat, so he discarded his dish and ate my enchiladas instead. Speaking of the Enchiladas (3 chicken tinga enchiladas, choice of sauce (verde or roja), poblano rajas, onion, queso mixto, crema, pico de gallo, and black beans and rice). I selected the verde and was happy with the look of my plate when presented. It was a nice sized portion as far as the enchiladas and sides. The enchiladas themselves were good, nothing out of this world, but tasty. Really liked the crema and other toppings, chicken tinga was solid. The one downside to this dish was the rice was very dried out, but the beans were creamy and well seasoned. Thank God for the Churros (fried dough, cinnamon, and chocolate sauce) as they were absolutely the meal highlight. Perfectly fried and I liked both of the dipping sauces very much. They are made fresh so have to order them earlier in the meal, but worth the wait. Make sure you leave room to order these! Delicious. While there were more pros than cons about El Poquito, I have to admit this wasn't my favorite Mexican restaurant. Starting with the positives: Booking a reservation on the website was super easy, metered parking was available right out front, employees were friendly and the inside of the restaurant was absolutely stunning. Staff wore masks/face shields and social distancing appeared to be enforced. Stopped in on their Margarita Monday - pitchers of any margarita are $15 off all day long. I ordered a glass of sangria. There was a decent amount of fruit mixed in and I savored the spices with each sip. Food was just okay. It came out fast, but the temperature of the food wasn't right. It must've been sitting out for some time and got cold. We started off with chips and guac. Nothing special about the guac, although you can add cojita cheese, pineapple or lump crab for an additional charge. I was looking forward to trying the Impossible Chorizo tacos, but was abruptly told by the waiter that they were out of them. I settled for the curry cauliflower tacos. The cauliflower was crunchy, but lukewarm. I will say they did not skimp out on filling up the tacos with the cauliflower. The curry aioli inside the taco shell was very good and actually gave the taco the majority of its flavor. My favorite menu item by far was the esquites (corn off the cob). It was flavorful, creamy and complimented my tacos amazingly. It looks small in size, but I was able to share it with my boyfriend. Highly recommend! I would like to give El Poquito another chance. The food didn't leave a lasting impression on me, but I enjoyed my experience here. The environment was comfortable. HOWEVER the other cocktails are tasty and did not give me a headache, I enjoy the cocktails most with mezcal as the smoky tequila gives certain drinks a nice kick with a smoky undertone. Strawberry margarita Nachos Shrimp tacos Pretty simple, pretty hard to mess up. The margaritas was solid, not strong but decent. (6.5/10). The nachos were decent, not much flavor but hey, serviceable (6.5/10). The shrimp tacos were some of worst tacos I've had, which was surprising because I read over so many quality reviews. The tortilla seemed to be stale and lacking any texture or substance, the shrimp was bland and just blah. There was no sauce, or anything to tie the ingredients together. (2/10). Everything was done through the Toast app, from ordering to paying. You could see everyone's orders and when it came time to pay, pay for your items only. This is great for groups. The menu had so many good options. I decided to go with a bowl and had a hard time deciding between the grilled mahi bowl or the plantain tempura mahi bowl. The food was ok, pretty standard nothing special. The guac appetizer could have been larger it was pretty small. We also ordered shrimp ceviche appetizer, it was good but could have had more shrimp. I had the mahi tacos which were really good imo I regret not ordering something son the side. I also had a margarita, it was delish, really well made! This is a cute Mexican food place right in the heart of Chestnut Hill. They have indoor and outdoor seating, and in the winter (this year atleast) they have a cute heated igloo village. The igloos really do stay pretty warm and comfortable. Make a reservation though because they're a hot commodity! Their menu is pretty big and they have a variety of options for vegetarians too. They also have happy hour deals. The food is pretty good and priced about average. I have been there a few times, and usually service is good. The last time I went, the service was very slow and they forgot to put in some of my order but I believe they had new hires working so that's likely why. It won't keep me from returning. read more

I understand why they average 3 stars, but I think they are a little better than 3. Some people might not appreciate the authenticity. The space is cozy and the staff is great. The drink program is a plus. They have a tequila "mule" that is a clever twist. The best thing we had were actually the fried jalapeño. And the tres leche and churros were great for dessert. The entrees were all fine. Most in our group did tacos and my wife did a platter and they were all good, but honestly the portions were a little small. Usually Mexican places are generous with the portions and the plates were a little boring. The simplicity of a fried mahi taco is nice but pickled onion on top isn't quite enough. Something on the side or something to complete the plate would have been appreciated. I recently moved to the Philadelphia area. My lady friend came down for the weekend to hangout and explore. She had a stressful week with exams and was really craving some Mexican food. We called a few places but they were unfortunately booked up and then we stumbled upon El Poquito. El Poquito did not disappoint. The first thing you notice in the restaurant is the ambience - amazing lighting, wall and table decor, and the overall atmosphere. We elected to sit inside but there is outside dining as well. Rest assured, the staff and everyone were on the ball with covid protocols. As for the food and drinks. We started off with some water and then decided for a pitcher of margs to destress from the week. Wow, they packed one helluva punch. If you want a strong margarita, this has your name on it. For food we had queso and chips for an app and chicken quesadillas and a chicken bowl for our meal. All 3 were excellent. My friend loved the pepper in the quesadilla. It was a great place to share in some great food, unwind with some margs, and really enjoy each other's company with a lot of laughs and smiles. My gratitude to the El Poquito staff. read more

Bad experience with miserable bartender who hates her life. Fire her. Waited 20 minutes for a beer, and she was so incredibly rude for no reason at all. Asking her for anything was like I was personally offending her, any request was met with frustration from her. Will never come back. read more

What a great restaurant for Mexican food. I came here in the winter and only got to eat inside but I'm excited to come back and get to try their outs seating area. It looks gorgeous. We all ordered different margaritas and and shared them, so I got to try a couple of the flavors they're offering. All of them were delicious, not sweet and syrupy, and definitely not watered down. We all also ordered a portion of the guacamole to share. Not the best guacamole I've had in Philly but still really fresh and good. I definitely liked it more than the salsa. I ordered the chicken tacos (you get three tacos with your order). Personally I thought there was too much of a cilantro tase, but if you love that, then these will be great for you.
