This is probably more of a 2.5/5 star. The food was good enough after a long day at sea world and heading on the way back home. Our family was sat down pretty fast and the waiter took our order. He seems to be a little frustrated when we were hesitant on what we would order. When we kindly asked questions about the menu, his tone of voice seemed very unprofessional and unfriendly. The food came fast but the flavor on the quesadillas was kind of sad. I definitely had way better quesadillas out there. The burritos that comes in the choose 2 or choose 3 plate, was very very sad. I like the taco salad better but the amount of salad was very underwhelming. I probably would not recommend this place unless you are starving at the time. read more

Wow! This was a happy accident to discover this restaurant. I have seen it 100 times and dismissed it due to its location next to LA Fitness in a small strip mall. We decided to come here after such poor service at a neighboring restaurant. This is my new favorite local Mexican restaurant. The service is superb, the atmosphere and food are authentic in ambience and flavor. Chips and salsa were served as soon as we arrived. My husband and I came for Father's Day and they offered him a free shot of Tequila. We decided to share Fajitas for 2 and got enough fix for lunch and dinner. I also ordered a Sangria which was delicious. We ended with a yummy chocolate pistachio dessert that had an amazing crunch. Alejandro was our server and took such good care of us and made us feel so welcome. He was attentive to our needs and great about refilling my husband's soda. I look forward to returning to this restaurant the next time I want some delicious Mexican food with great service. read more

The atmosphere is very empty, I have been multiple times and go often. They have recently remodeled so it is a nice new look only thing wrong is they have an open kitchen and the only thing you see is cleaning supplies. The service is great when I went on my birthday they gave me their a sombrero and churros it was great quality dessert. The lunch food isn't the greatest it feels poor quality and the prices should be lower. Would come back but not my first choice in Winter Park! read more

El Potro is always a great experience for us. The service is fantastic, we've had several servers who have all been very friendly and attentive. Our most recent server Ruben V. was so nice and made us feel welcome. The food is consistently good, we recently tried the new Tacos Barbacoa and the Pollo à la Diabla. The barbacoa had great flavor and I'm a fan of their salsa verde. The Diabla has a decent amount of spice and tons of flavor. We also got the queso, which is very good. The atmosphere is nice and cozy, they have murals hand painted on the windows which are very cute. The restaurant is clean. Also I find their prices reasonable. They also have a large selection of alcoholic beverages, I didn't have any this time but in the past l've tried a few different ones and they have all been good. read more

I've been going to El Potro since 2001. It's one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in the area. Always consistent. The food is always good. My favorites are the Pollo Loco & Carne Asada tacos, and I love their homemade chips and salsa. Highly recommended. read more

I understand that the restaurant business is tough and you have to make a buck to survive but we've been eating at this restaurant for many years and the quality has fallen off. The totopos were home made and delicious now they are apparently from a bag. The chicken literally was maybe the best quality of any restaurant in the area and now it is rubbery like you would find in a low level Chinese restaurant. Very disappointing. First off our waiter was very nice, our order came out wrong, but was fixed very quickly, chips where stale, we ordered the nachos with chicken, beef, queso, and shredded cheese, it was good, but I was packing up leftovers and there was a ROACH in our chips, the waiter came out and we showed him he grabbed up the basket to try and catch the roach, he apologized, and said that they had fumigation done the night before, s it must had made the roaches come out, I highly DO NOT EVER EAT HERE! read more

The food here was pretty good and definitely a great value for the price. The menu is pretty extensive, so lots of options. Service is not great.... Both times I visited, they rushed us out so quickly it was insane. I would almost say we were there for less than an hour, everything happened so quickly. Kind of intense for no reason lol. We used a delivery service on a few occasions to deliver El Potro. The 3 Carne asado tacos are great as well as the quesadilla suprema. Everything came packaged well and still warm. We would order again. We've never been inside though so unsure of the restaurant ambiance. read more

5 Stars for tasty tacos and fajitas, outdoor seating, and SUPER friendly staff! (Daniela was AWESOME!) I was with a few friends and we were looking for a quick place to grab a bite before running errands. With that being said, we're still being very cautious with COVID, so outdoor seating was a must. Enter: El Potro. We sat at one of their many outdoor tables and were greeted by our server, Daniela. She proceeded to guide us through the menu and helped us realize that a pitcher of Margs were better than individual glasses. She brought out some chips and salsa and when she heard someone in my party mention that I can't handle any spice, she brought me mild salsa to satisfy my hunger while also keeping my pesky esophagus happy. (#heartburn) I ended up getting two a la carte tacos de carne asada (I chose flour tortillas, but you can also get flour or crispy). They came with plenty of cilantro and a wonderful tomatillo salsa on the side to add to the flavor. Truly perfect little tacos. My friends got sizzling steak and chicken fajitas. The portion was huge and came with rice, refried beans, and all the toppings you would want. Overall, the food hit the spot, the outdoor seating was much appreciated, and the service was outstanding. Headed in here for a friend's birthday at the end of last month. The table was already set up and ready for our arrival which was very nice. We were close to the door which gave us a nice window area. The staff was very friendly and helped us with any questions. I had a shrimp salad plate which was excellent. Everyone's portions were huge, so I strongly recommend that you account for that when you order any additional items like an appetizer. Staff was all wearing masks and taking time to clean tables as they turned over from customer to customer. Overall: A Great spot for a larger group to meet for an event / special occasion. Ordered green chilaquiles was told they're not on menu but that they could be made, the server then asked what type of meat chicken beef???? I said just with an egg on top he said that in Mexico they are always served with shredded meat!! I'm thinking well I e been to Mexico many times, I cook authentic Mexican food and I've never heard of this but I went with it and ordered them with chicken. My daughter ordered birria tacos and husband chilaquiles with beef. Well when the order came out what I got was chips with green sauce scattered in places mixed with shredded chicken it was navhos Not chilaquiles was one big mess. My husbands chilaquiles came out with eggs which he didn't ask for as a matter of facts he can't eat eggs My daughter found a curly blonde hair in her birria tacos all along we tried getting the server's attention but he was on the telephone we called someone else over and all he did was tell the server who was still on the phone took him many minutes to make his way to us to just tell me that I had ordered the chilaquiles both the same and he was rude about it It was over all a very bad experience and I would not recommend!! One last thing the owner seemed to be there but didn't even care to come over just eating and carrying on, also annoying kids coming in to sell chocolates to the tables ugh pls do yourself a favor and avoid this place just not worth it. I love this restaurant and come here often. I gave the server a good tip and I was amazed by him! He thanked me so much, turned around to walk away and came back and asked what he did correct. He said it was his first day and wanted to know what he did right! And I LOVED THAT!!! It stood out so much to me because he wanted to continue to do it. Hire more friendly people like him. When I arrived, I was greeted immediately and sat, which was great. They brought out warm chips and salsa once this happened. I thought this is going to be a great restaurant after about a third server came by and we got our food in. And after that never saw our server again. They all sit in the middle table a roll silverware and just chat. My friend's steak bowl was horrible. Every tiny piece of steak was hard as a rock and dry. I have the carnitas plate and it was so bad I took 2 bites and left it all. We never got checked on or asked if we liked the food. I had to wave over to the table to get the check. Once we got it. We waited another 10 mins to pay. We just got up and walked up to the register instead of waiting for the staff to take our credit cards. After at the register the waiter comes by and I ask him to spilt the check for me and my friend. He sighed about it. Once he printed each check he had the audacity to circle the 20% 18% suggestion on the bottom of the checks. NEVER AGAIN will I come to this restaurant. Poor excuse for Mexican food. read more

I ordered the enchilada lunch special. Comes with one enchilada with your choice of chicken, beef, or cheese. Rice & beans. I ordered the chicken enchilada and it was truly terrible. The chicken had barely any flavor and the "enchilada sauce" seriously tasted like pizza sauce on a cheap frozen pizza. We've been here several times, but last night was a saving grace. After trying a few restaurants around town and finding too long of wait times, we came back to an oldie, but a goodie. Our table of 6 crushed chips, salsa, queso, 2 for 1 margs (Mondays & Tuesdays) while we ordered some of our faves. Everyone loved their meal and our server couldn't have been better. We had a few dietary restrictions that they handled with expertise. The speed and quality is always great and you leave with that "I may have overdone it" feelings. The pollo a la diabla is definitely hot. The burritos absolutely massive (and flavorful!). The chalapa meal was cooked to perfection and the enchiladas verde was great too. Server/Manager was not attentive. Gave us wrong drinks. I ordered a watermelon margarita and got a mango one. I am allergic to mangoes. She never came over to let me know she was out of watermelon. I returned the drink and asked for a Lime one. I had to send that back because it was terrible. Our lunch was okay, but bland. Again no checking back to see if our meal was good. I genuinely wonder if the CIA is funding this restaurant as some kind of experiment to see the limits of what people will eat, or perhaps some kind of psyop against flavor? i've truly honestly sincerely never in my life ever eaten anything with less flavor, ever. the horrid little communion wafers at church as a child has more interesting and layered flavor than the food here. the beans were literally like eating cardboard it made me so utterly depressed that when i'd finished enough to realize it wasn't going to get better, i simply went straight to bed. My review only concerns the food as the service was acceptable. I dined at this location on 10/14/2025, with a large group at 6:30 in the evening. I ordered a combo plater with a tamale, a cheese enchilada and a chili relleno. My meal came out on a large oval platter covered edge to edge with a thick layer of a "pasty" red sauce covered with copious amount of melted cheese. The sauce and the cheese were so thick that you could not see the three items it covered. The tamale was very dry and hard on the inside and filled with what I can only describe as "kibbles and bits." It tasted very "old." The cheese enchilada appeared to be a tortilla wrapped around a very large "slab" of cheese (cheese overkill) and also did not taste very good. The chili relleno was a very large dark green pepper of some kind with a small amount of cheese filling. The pepper was so tough and undercooked that I could barely cut it with a knife. This was not what I would describe as "good" Mexican food. It was for the most part "inedible." read more
