Pleasantly surprised. Small establishment but very good food. Good menudo and handmade tortillas.

I give this hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant five stars. Why, you may ask? Because it meets my Mexican restaurant hole-in-the-wall criteria. 1. Is the salsa good? Yes the red salsa is very tasty and fresh. Bonus there is a creamy green salsa too that you'll fall In love with. 2. Is it authentic? Yes, when you notice all the locals eating here are of a Hispanic descent... you know it's good. 3. How is the service? Excellent, they are fast and so very helpful. 4. How are the prices? We had two breakfast plates, a huevos rancheros and a breakfast torta with a coffee for only 12 dollars. SOLD. Coming back tomorrow. read more

So I've been searching for a great menudo in Houston for years. The past ones I've had havnt been anything to write home about. So I find myself at El Rancherito refereed to me by Mexican individual. He spoke highly of it and got me a little excited. But I knew that most people don't have my standards when it comes to food. Well I tried the menudo and here are my thoughts on there soup. At first glance the color looked a bit off. Like an orangey red . Side toppings were complete and proceeded to add all them before diving in for my first spoon of soup. Just as I had suspected, kinda of bland , a bit of a watered down taste. Not horrible but I would say not impressed with the broth. The meat itself was cooked really well. Nice chewy, but yet soft and easy to eat texture. Did have a very slight Gamey taste also. Meat had no nasty fat attached so it was cleaned very well or trimmed very well in that regard. Tortillas are homemade and delicious. Salsa, they had two choices for chips spicy is the only one I tried and it was just okay. All in all this is not a place I would come back to and venture with other menu items. If they can't get the salsa right and to my standards. Salsa is the heart and core to any Mexican restaurant and Mexican household. And if that's just okay than more than likely everything else is just going to be okay. Service was great. And other items just seem pretty typical and I believe most people would be happy with there food. I gave them a 4 because it was just one menu item I tried and service was excellent . read more

Wow! Eight of us came for dinner tonight after mass across the street. Many of the kids ordered #16 a t-bone with traditional Mexican sides. It was amazing. Service was good. Dropped in for breakfast yesterday Migas special was delicious and a bargain. Coffee might have come w a pinch of cinnamon or else they've got a far better coffee roster than I. Rude, slow, and NEVER get your take out order right. Have eaten there for years but no more. At least apologize when they get your order wrong, but no, just stare at you and talk amongst themselves. If you want hot, fresh authentic Mexican food, this is definitely the place! Good service, staff is very nice and quick and the food is hot and ready to eat! I'm almost afraid to share this one because it's out of the way and the food is awesome, but it's time to introduce y'all to El Rancherito. This is a dive in every sense of the word. It's been there forever. A jukebox by the door occasionally blasts out something with accordion and an old projection TV in the corner plays Univision. That's about it for atmosphere. 98% of the clientele speak Spanish as their primary language, but if you don't the help is fluent in English and they won't hold it against you. The waitresses take good care of everyone and bust their tails - I can usually get in and out for lunch in 30 to 45 minutes even if I read during lunch. (Hint: when you first come in, take a seat if you're not getting take out. They'll come to you with a menu. They won't bring you your check when you're done, just walk up to the counter and they'll ring you up.) I come here for lunch all the time - they have an expansive lunch menu and one of those items will be on special on the whiteboard for a couple of bucks off. Most lunch plates are around $7 with some going up to $9. Sodas are from a cooler, and they have Mexican Cokes. The menu says they serve Jalisco style Mexican food, and it's not gringo-ized even if you're a gringo. That means the tacos come with onions and cilantro and the quesadillas are more like tacos topped with white cheese than anything across Bellaire at Taco Bell. Table salsas are good, however the menu items were plain. Our table ordered a chicken plate, torta, and the beef burrito with "gravy". Nothing special, wouldn't return. read more

I have been coming here for years. This place is amazing and not a whole lot of people know about it. It is a hole in a wall on a residential street across from a church, with very limited parking. The food is delicious, comes out fast, and is extremely affordable. My favorites are the Jalisco Burrito and another good plate is the Plato Mexicano. These are both under $10 and well worth it! One downside is that they lost their license and do not serve any alcohol anymore. Love this spot! Don't tell too many friends, let's keep it small and special lol read more

This place is one of my go-to places when hung over. The bacon and egg breakfast taxis are solid, and their chicken breast tacos are excellent as well. We loved this place when we lived in Bellaire. The nacho burrito grande was excellent. I loved the crispy tacos. The staff is always friendly and attentive. The green and red sauces are amazing. Our friends had the seafood soup and it was wonderful. This is no frills, no glam atmosphere but the food is as authentic as it gets. We live in Colorado now and we so miss this place! We are heading back for a visit next week, and yes, like our last visit, we will eat at El R at least three times again! Can't get enough of great! read more
