Freestanding box restaurant. Nice murals on the wall. Clean. No host or hostess on duty. Great menu, with a small bar area. Service was slow but drinks perpetrated so service was fast. Nachos took a while but they provide chips and salsa while you wait.

Came in on a Saturday around 3:30pm. We were seated immediately. Our servers were all friendly. They brought us chips and salsa within 2 minutes of sitting down. Our orders came out within 15 minutes. My grandpa and I both ordered enchiladas and my grandma had the taco salad. Both plates of enchiladas were great. I had the spinach and chicken and the spinach sauce on top was super creamy and flavorful. The side of rice was also delicious. I ended up mixing the rice in with my sauce My grandpa had the crab and shrimp enchiladas with a cheese sauce. He kept raving about the sauce on his, as well. My grandma added a little hot sauce to her taco salad, but other than that said it was delicious and filling. The bathrooms were clean and stocked with soap and paper towels. The decor inside was bright and colorful. Would recommend!

I was craving some Mexican food and decided to stop in El Ranchero, the restaurant is very popular I was excited to taste the food here. I ordered a a well done fajita is was made just the way I ordered it, was a little bummed that they didn't offer hand made tortillas. The tortillas were stuck together and the edges were hard so I couldn't eat it with my meal. I did love the rice it had an authentic Mexican flavors. The beans tasted out of a can so I didn't enjoy them. The service was great our waiter was one of the two there so he was extremely busy servicing almost the entire restaurant. Very impressed with his rapid service. The restaurant is family friendly, super clean with lots of space.

Love this place. The shrimp al chipotle is AMAZING. Great for lunch or dinner! Typically you are able to get seating quickly as well.

I'm happy to say the food's as good or better, with good service in an interesting setting. On crowded Massey boulevard with its strip malls and chain restaurants, it takes a keen eye to pick out this spot (hint - look for the Hobby Lobby parking lot). Then get ready for some unusual decor - the last occupant, a seafood place, did a LOT of intense decorating, including ocean-blue floors and dock pilings. We've visited this location 3 or 4 times now, and the food's been fine, partly out of our sentiment for the gone Frederick location. It's not hard to find Latino cuisine around here, but Mexicali had some of our favorites, including the delicious chiles rellenos (here, fried battered chilis, stuffed with cheese). When we went last week, it seemed clear they'd recently stepped up the game a little - new dinnerware and maybe even larger portions, and just as tasty if not more so. As usual, the chips were crispy and good (though our basket was mostly fragments) and the house salsa is a treat, fresh and zippy but not too hot. I had my go-to Azteca combo, with that chile relleno, a pork tamal, and a chicken enchilada, along with Mexican rice (though no beans this time, for some reason). My wife chose her favorite shrimp fajitas, also with beans and rice, though maybe a little skimpy on the bell peppers this time. My classic margarita on the rocks was big and zesty. Our server was attentive and polite. The crowd was thin on this Saturday night, so there were plenty of staff on hand. In an area with tons of Latin food choices, we depend on the consistent flavor and service here. Bueno!

The lengua was perfectly cooked and crispy on the outside. The flavors of the steak and lengua was out of this world. Not to add, but the individually packaged sauces were delicious as well. We will definitely be back.

I came with a friend and, even though I'm not usually a pupusa fan, I didn't want to sit there without ordering. I figured I'd try one and take the rest home to my son. I ordered three pupusas, starting with the chicken and cheese one--and it was amazing. I ate the whole thing... then the next two! They were so flavorful and well-priced. The host mentioned they also have a Spanish nightclub downstairs on nights and weekends, which adds to the cool vibe of the place. We ended the meal with dessert. I ordered the flan, which I didn't care for--it was too firm and just not my taste. (I make flan at home, and mine's better!) But the other dessert we tried, pictured, was absolutely incredible. I'll definitely be back for the pupusas and the atmosphere--just skipping the flan next time.

Big Papi's believes in keeping things real and fresh by incorporating high-quality ingredients and bold flavors. The place was very clean and has a tables to dine in as well. This Papi's looks good, but tastes only "ok"…read more We were tired on a Sunday early-evening, (Jun 2026), and the staff of the Big Papi's location in Hagerstown seemed unmotivated, maybe worn out from towards the end of their day. We got a birria taco, a rockfish taco, a vegetarian burrito, and a guacamole. The fresh-made guac was quite good! Creamy, fresh, and generous. The Birria taco was good. Flavorful and tender and generous. But inexplicably they did not include a side of consommé sauce for dipping. Lots-of-sauce is a key part of a messy juicy birria taco. That would have just been a disappointment. But the fried rockfish taco, meh. It tasted fresh, but it tasted like something had burned in the oil. The fish seemed too chewy, overdone. The coating was overly-hard. The bean and rice burrito was also meh. The dull rice seemed too chewy, either overdone or cooked until it was too dry. And there were only a small amount of black beans, and no added veggies, so there was little flavor. Overall, we were disappointed in the Big Papi's location in Hagerstown. For over $35, we only liked $8 of the food. What was good, was very good. Maybe they were just having a bad evening. We might try Big Papi's again, but probably not this location.

Our server barely understood English, and even simple questions turned into a whole situation. I asked FOUR separate times whether the spicy salsa was free. I literally said, "If it's free, I'll take it. If not, never mind." The server kept saying yes, it was free... so we ate it. Then the check comes out with a $3.99 charge for the salsa When I asked why it was charged after being told multiple times it was free, the server still kept saying "free" while staring at the receipt. At that point I had to ask for the manager because we were clearly not communicating. The manager said there was a "language barrier issue," BUT because we already ate it, we still had to pay for it. That part honestly blew my mind. If I asked about the price four times before ordering, clearly the whole point was that I didn't want it if it cost extra What made it worse was the attitude. The server never apologized once and the manager acted super confident like this was somehow normal. And honestly... the food wasn't even worth the drama. Everything was ridiculously salty, and the salsa tasted like someone mixed it with water. Cool interior. Terrible experience. Definitely not coming back.

There were only two tables available that we could put together to accommodate our group but they wouldn't let us do that until everyone arrived. We were slightly frustrated because if they gave the second table to someone else we never would have accommodated our group. Luckily the rest of the group arrived shortly after we did so we were able to sit together. I'm a bit of a Mexican food snob and I thought the food was mediocre. The salsa was pretty runny and the queso was melted cheese with NO seasoning/flavor to it. I ended up adding hot sauce to both just to flavor them. I ordered the ceviche - one of my favorites. I was really disappointed with that. The shrimp was overcooked so my guess is that they added cooked shrimp into the mix rather than making it the traditional way. Bottom line - the margaritas was good but I walked out hungry with a box of leftovers that I ended up throwing away. I would give it a try again when we're not with a large group, but I certainly won't be rushing back there anytime soon. Overall, 2.5/3 star experience.
