Fantastic Peruvian food. We had a table of six with a Peruvian to guide us. Loved everything we had - apps, entrees, and desserts.

I came here with a friend who is Peruvian and highly suggested this place. I we got a bunch of different things and I found it to be a little higher end with the price but the food itself was very good. I've certainly had better I will say (there's some fire places in Long Beach such as Casa Chukis) but those places are usually not as nice of an ambiance to dine in. When I came here it was during late 2020 when they had outdoor dining in the parking lot, but that worked out well! I'm curious to see if anything has changed since then, but I am surprised on the lower reviews. read more

Been here many times throughout the years. Lomo saltado is a classic, hot bread, and mariscos con arroz is always a winner. Their sauces are great too I've also tried a few other dishes like their shank, chicken soup and fried calamari. All worthy of a try while the prices are a bit on the higher end. During pandemic, I substituted fettuccine for rice on one of the lomo saltado and that was a great substitute. Giving this a 4 star as we weigh price vs. quality vs. overall experience - probably closer to a 4.3 to 4.5. Irregardless, a great place to try good Peruvian food. read more

This place has been inconsistent in the quality of its food. I've had their juicy lomo salado and it's been amazing. Their ceviche has also been really outstanding. And their pisco sour has been truly inspired! However, I'm not sure if it was due to COVID that the quality went down but I was a little overwhelmed. Good but we've had better. The atmosphere was GREAT! Multiple birthday parties. But it is very cramped and loud. All the surfaces (floor. Walls, tables, etc are hard so the sound bounces. We got one piece of bread each - no offers for a re-fill of bread. The green sauce was great 5 stars- the only thing missing was the complete "package" we are used to getting that amazing chicken rice soup at other Peruvian restaurants. We ordered medium, but it was overbooked. The seasoning was muddled. It was overly salty. I would NOT recommend this dish. Skip it fast! 4/5: $5: Side of Yuca frita: a little dry; portions are small; excellent with their green and red sauces 5/5: $12: Chicha Morada Pitcher: purple corn drink with fruit and spices. We decided to come to El Rocoto because it was the only place open late on January 1st. We arrived, walked in and not wait too long but while waiting I looked around and saw beautiful paintings hung on the walls and the restaurant was clean and neat. Once the hostess brought us to our table, I ordered a Inka Kola for my beverage along with my kids meal, breaded chicken, rice and fries. It was 10/10! The Inka Kola was so delicious and sweet! Service is good, they seem to be on it because they want to get people in and out I don't see anything wrong with that. I'm sure if they don't come around you just gotta wave them down. As much as it pains me to write this...It would be a disservice to the Yelp community if I stayed silent. I've been coming to El Rocoto for nearly 20 yrs. I typically order the same thing: the jalea & tallarin verde con bistec apanado. Having lived in Peru, I felt like the food was pretty good over the years. Upon my visit last week, the bread was rock hard to start & the sauces that come with seemed less tasty (perhaps watered down). Sad because that green sauce had been one of my all time favorites. The jalea -which I've been ordering for decades now has far fewer shrimp & what looks to be calamari of the frozen variety. The tallarin didn't quite taste the same either & the portion I took home tasted sour afterwards. All for about $100 after they figured tax & tip. I'm sorry, I don't see the value there (service was good). Anyhow, not to belabor my point. I'll be looking elsewhere for my next meal of Peruvian cuisine read more

I went here last Thursday with my classmates for a Spanish fluency test and it was honestly a great experience. Our server in particular was very accommodating for our needs and was very understanding when we ordered. In addition, the food was great! A 4 star location falling to 3. Haven't visited this location for a couple of years but I always remembered it for its amazingly flavorful food. The food would make up for the only down side being the poor seating arrangement that lead to people brushing up against you as they walked passed. Now it is the exact opposite. The restaurant has made an upgrade to the seating arrangmenets however the food seems to have fallen in quality. The food is still good but it doesnt stand out as it once did. My most recent visit: My server Victor was excellent, 5 stars I ordered the Tallarin Verde with breaded beef steak which wasn't exactly bad but it fell very short of my previous visits. The signature fresh bread and tasty sauce they bring out before the meal was wrong??? They brought out the sauce after the meal had already arrived and never brought the bread. We had to specifically ask for the bread to be brought out... but then it was stale. I believe they deserve a second chance and will make an attempt to give them one more try in hopes of having a better experience. Note: I dont blame the bread on my server as it was packed and hectic at the time and the bread was brought out by someone else. I got chicken Saltado for $21 and the cost of mostly rice and soggy French fries, a half an onion and a tomato with about 8 oz of chicken and a roll, is about $5 with inflated prices. The dish should be about $17 and I'm being generous. Good flavors, but not great, (I know good Peruvian I lived there), good service, way, way over priced. But people are generally ignorant and will pay these prices, it's my second and last visit. I always give a second chance.
