I'm not usually a Mexican food person, but this place is the exception. Every time I'm in Manhattan beach , I have to come here. The food is so good that I always order extra to take home! I also highly recommend trying their enchiladas and tacos if you come here--you definitely don't want to miss them!

Another MB classic with our (and everyone's) friend Jose Luis at the door. The staff is flawless and the food ever better. Everyone has their favorites and it was the first place I tried carnitas. From the friendliness when I made the online reservation, to the delicious food and welcoming experience, I highly recommend this small, family run business. 6 of us dined there and everyone was pleased with their order. Birria tacos are a must! Guacamole is sooo creamy and the service is amazing and extremely fast. I got my tacos in less than 5 minutes. 12/10!

Woah kinda expensive $50 lunch. I had 1 taco and 1 enchilada (no beans or rice). My daughter had the fajita plate and it doesn't come out sizzling on a skillet... The food is good not great. Friendly service and great location. Obviously paying for location. Nice outdoor seating in the summer.

Yum!!!!! This was such a yummy treat. Located in a busy street in Manhattan Beach. We walked up at around 1 on Saturday evening and were seated immediately. They stayed busy throughout our visit however I never did see a line. The place is small with a small porch out front. I ordered the Schwarzenegger tacos which were amazing!!! Would love to order again. Their salsa is spicy but so so good! 100% recommend!

The staff is so friendly and the food comes out hot and fast! Just how I like it. Complimentary salsa and homemade chips. I got the guacamole and it's very creamy and smooth. Tasty but don't expect chunks. Viking burrito: 8.5/10 Super solid wet burrito! For starters it was freaking massive and full of all the good stuff. Plenty of meat and fillings, and I loved the green salsa! My only qualm was the carne asada was a bit tough but still fairly good. I would highly recommend coming here for a good wet burrito!

Went on a beach walk with coworkers sunday morning and decided on lunch at Wl Sombrero. small restaurant but there was space on the patio as well as inside. we did get there around noon with a party of 13 and were seated immediately. we split between 2 tables but totally fine with that. service was great the servers were very attentive and good came out fast. very tasty, and awesome prices. would def visit again.

The chips and salsa are good, I just wish they gave more so I didn't have to ask several times. The shrimp cocktail was amazing and probably one of the best I've had. They give lots of large shrimp and avocado throughout rather than just on top of the glass. Very refreshing to eat on a hot day. I definitely will go back for this. The tamale and taco I had were good as well, but nothing special. Service was good. Restaurant is small with some inside seating and a small patio that I sat at and enjoyed.

Inexpensive Mexican food Restaurant. Most of their food is very good. I enjoy their chicken tostada. Made with a generous portion of chicken ,tostada ,beans, guacamole, cheese. Enough to fill you up. Under 15 dollars. Also enjoy their ground beef crispy tacos. Eat inside in a booth or chairs. Can also eat outside area. Chips and salsa are very good. Service is great. Get your food and beverage right away. Very friendly. Gone with friends for years. They always want to come back. Might have to search for parking. Depends on day and time. read more

There are just a handful of Mexican Food Joints in MH, but this one we found was a delight. The redolent aroma presaged a delectable meal. We were taken back by the explosive flavors of both the green and red sauces provided. Definitely some family recipes have been past down and shared with the community. Lots of history documented by the decor and pictures providing a sense of warmth and home. The employees provided a welcoming and we want you to come back attitude. Happened to El Sombrero over the weekend while walking in downtown Manhattan Beach. I love Mexican and they had outside seating, plus, having lived in the South Bay for several years I was familiar with "El Som." The service was not super fast, BUT, it was the weekend so I was not in a big hurry. The chip basket and salsa was good, they give big round tortilla chips which you need to break apart. The salsa was standard fare and tasty. I had the Schwarzenegger Tacos, which are two grilled shrimp tacos with pico de gallo and melted jack cheese. They are super greasy which initially concerned me, but in the end it was part of the delicious treat. (A grade) Thirsty? They also have good Mexican beers and make a decent margarita (B grade). Generally speaking the experience was 4 stars, BUT, on this day they were working on the outside deck, which is right in front of the establishment, and I had to talk over power saws and drills, which were like 10 feet away, so, I walked away at 3 stars. read more

The service was very good. I ordered the shrimp burrito. It had absolutely no flavor. The shrimp tasted like they just boiled them then put them in the burrito. My homie got a meal that looked good. He said he really enjoyed it. The place was crowded so they must be doing something right. Maybe what I ordered just wasn't a good selection. read more

I love everything about El Sombrero. It's a small local Mexican restaurant with the friendliest and attentive staff. You walk in and no matter how busy they are they make you feel welcome. Their Viking burrito has me doing a happy dance from beginning to end. The green sauce has just the right amount of bite with the flavorful layers of the burrito within. Their guacamole is great, we usually order extra to take home. The salsa is more of a tomato base salsa and full of flavor. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area and craving Mexican food! read more

"Welcome home." That was the greeting I first got upon arriving at El Sombrero in Manhattan Beach. Though I've never been here, the owners want each and every guest to feel like their home. This instantly made me like this place. It wasn't just their warm nature here however that was a winner because I soon saw their food was amazing too! I tried their beef tacos and was very impressed. They make their food with no lard but yet their food is quite tasty! Healthy and delicious are always good. The taco shell was perfectly crisp and the shredded beef was so tender. It was very hearty and fulfilling. It's always nice to see a business that has good customer service and good food. I really did feel like I was at home :). read more

We love this local restaurant. The owners and employees are always happy to see you and help you. We've done pick up here 3x during quarantine and it's been so nice to eat their homestyle food. A sweet, quaint, AUTHENTIC Mexican restaurant in the heart of Manhattan Beach, CA. This is our go to place whenever we aren't looking for all the bells and whistles of a fancy beach spot. We come here for the great food...plain and simple. They have the best enchiladas around. We had a couple of their traditional Mexican breakfasts this time around. I had the huevos rancheros and my companion had the machaca and egg breakfast. Both meals were nearly perfect! I know Mexican food. If you're in this area and really want something authentic, this place should be on your list. Oh, and wash it all down with a great Michelada and the beer of your choice! read more

I've ordered takeout at ES a couple dozen times over the past few years and have never been disappointed. There has been the occasional mix-up in what was ordered, but the food is always solid...especially at the price point. The Chili Verde and Viking burritos are both good choices and the Machaca combo plate is a winner! Check out the El Som Omelette for breakfast as well. read more

We came on Saturday (4/30/22) with a large party of 13. I thought we would be received with an attitude but they were so welcoming and nice! The service was AMAZING, the food was excellent and the drinks were nice and strong. Hubby wanted the Camarones a La Diabla as hot as they can make it. They took on the challenge and delivered! I'm not sure if it was the owner/manager, but he was so good with all the kids, stopped to check in on us and just gave us an overall awesome experience. It felt like we were with family. The waitress (I wish I got her name) was hilarious and oh so sweet. Can't wait to come back when the next dance competition is scheduled in the area! Surprisingly good and no-frills Mexican place in the heart of boogie Manhattan Beach. We got the carne asada nachos which came with plenty of toppings but disappointingly running (probably fake) guacamole. My wife got the shredded beef enchilada, which was well proportioned and quite delicious. The service was friendly and accommodating to our 8-month-old. The whole place has a family feel to it. THIS PLACE IS INCREDIBLE. The food! The service! The margaritas! 10 out of 10 recommend. We had fish tacos, wet burrito, abondigas soup and pork tamale and everything was superb. Dulce was our server and she was fantastic! We will for sure be back next time we are in town. read more

This is a date spot favorite for us! We come for the schwarzenegger tacos (crispy shrimp tacos) and stay because of the impeccable service from our girl, Dulce! We love the Manhattan ceviche too. It's pink! The chips and salsa have a great flavor! And the drinks are well made and strong enough to be worth the price. Dulce always makes sure we are well taken care of, but that's to be said about the whole team. From the busers to the owner everyone, is awesome and kind and welcoming. Absolutely PHENOMENAL. I love my authentic street tacos and this place met my expectations. I got just simple steak soft tacos with cilantro and onions and oh my goodness... the STEAK was amazing. This is not a fancy Mexican restaurant but one with simple menu of plain fixings prepared as you would expect and served with gusto and well oriented customer service. This is a place for tacos and burritos with or without rice and beans. Nothing fancy but quick service and perfect for young families and kids. Beer available. Lots if take out. Our server was super duper friendly and even had multiple conversations with us throughout the meal, sharing anecdotes and talking to my tattoo artist friend about getting a tat from her LOL. We quickly ordered some chips and queso (not free) and were blown away by how creamy and tasty the queso was. The tortas were also delicious and easy to scoop a lot of cheese on to. On to the menu, they had a good variety of Mexican dishes, but the price point, man. I thought $4-5 a taco at Barrio Queen in Arizona was steep, but this place charged $7-8 for a single small taco. I would've been okay with any menu item since it's Mexican and nothing under that cuisine could be bad, but seeing each enchilada over $30, made me steer clear of the main entree dishes. I also knew I wanted to try fish tacos, so I just opted for one fish taco and one grilled taco, with a side of mashed black beans. Crazy that some black beans also were at least $5. The fish taco was nicely battered and the guacamole was ripe and creamy, but the grilled chicken taco was nothing spectacular. There was also cauliflower tacos and beef brisket tacos ordered among us. My friend who ordered the beef brisket taco rated it 7.5/10, whereas the cauliflower tacos were rated 9/10. The food also took at least 20 minutes to arrive at the table. Both sauces my tacos came with were extremely spicy so I didn't even touch those. My friends enjoyed their meals, and the side of green rice two of them got was rather tasty. Overall, our server was the best part of the experience. She really ate DOWN, whereas our food and the price point did not.

The only thing I thought was exceptional was the bacon cheddar buttermilk biscuit with the whipped honey butter. It was buttery and crispy goodness. This item alone is worth coming back to this restaurant. Overall, this place is a solid 4 star restaurant. If you're planning on visiting this place, I have to warn you that parking may be a real pain to find since the area is very popular with beach goers. Things were exacerbated over the weekend due to a volleyball tournament. Had to drive around for like 30 minutes to find parking.

Off the lunch menu we had the Italian panini ($29), which was a surprisingly complex sandwich with mortadella, salami, onions, lettuce, fresh Marzano tomatoes, and many other vegetables. It was served with an exceptional set of fries, which had a great amount of garlic and the perfect blend of crisp on the outside and softness on the inside, along with tangy ketchup. The children got the pasta bolognese ($14), which was a standard bolognese, although the pasta was a little overcooked. We also got a child salmon ($21), a surprisingly generous piece of fish, well cooked with a somewhat crispy exterior and soft interior alongside broccolini and whipped mashed potatoes. The service was decent - our server collected our order, checked on us appropriately, and generally took care of us throughout our visit. As the pictures suggest, the interior is quite upscale, scattered across three floors with a view overlooking the main road and the beach itself. This led to an excellent, breezy atmosphere and spectacular views, perfect for a hot day. Prices are a little on the elevated side, but not excessive, given the highly popular location of this restaurant and excellent views. Overall, The Strand House offers an appropriately upscale lunch or dinner at an elevated price for the discerning customer looking for good food and excellent views with a price to match. Fast forward to June 2026, and we brought our 3-month-old son to his first NIck's meal (unfortunately, he could not partake) and to celebrate my husband's first Father's Day. On this reservation, I put in a request for outdoor seating that gave us enough room to park our stroller and car seat, and they were able to accommodate that. They were also understanding when me and my husband were running a few minutes past our reservation time due to fhe baby, and we appreciated the flexibility. Noise level was moderate, but definitely quieter outside. If you get nothing else from this review, just remember this: ORDER THE WARM BUTTER CAKE. YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT. Parking is also convenient, with a large two-story parking garage located across the street, as well as metered street parking nearby.

Terrible Service - Left Without Ordering I had such a disappointing experience at this restaurant that we didn't even stay to order. The waitress was incredibly rude and dismissive. When I asked about vegan options, she acted annoyed, had no understanding of what veganism is, and responded in a condescending manner. Her attitude was so unpleasant that it completely ruined our experience before it even began. It was impossible to have a normal conversation with her, so we decided to leave. I LOVE El Sombrero! My goodness, I should be 500lbs because I eat here for lunch every single day, no joke! Ask my co-workers or the staff at el somb. The tacos are by far the best tacos on this side of town, or maybe the best ever! Ground beef is the way to go. I also switch it out with a tamale every now and then or the el somb burrito. I live down the street from this El Sombrero location so I eat it WAY too much. It always has the freshest lettuce, tomatoes, etc. and everything has been delicious. Jose and his family and staff are a beloved part of Manhattan Beach. The food is great, they are always ready to say hi with open arms, most kids have their first Junior Guard meals alone there and even with the sand and I'm pretty confident some not so great tips - everything they do is with a warm smile.
