We usually always order take out burritos and they are ready on time. This time we ordered 5 burritos and told they would be ready in 30 min. We ended up waiting an extra 30 min in the store because they said he forgot about our order. We also asked for tater tots on the side and the employee gave us chips with a smirk on his face then charged us $5 for them without telling us. The sausage and bacon burritos were not good as they usually and unfortunately had to keep an eye on the employee while he was making them because didn't trust what he would do to them after the tater tots. Carne asada burrito is one of the best in the central coast! And the salsa is perfect.

I called to make a pick up order. I ordered a burrito but wanted to add some things since there wasn't a burrito that just had everything I wanted. The guy said ok and I listed the things I wanted to add, he listed 2 of the items I wanted to add and asked "on the side?" I told him no and reiterated all the things I was trying to add and that I wanted it all in the burrito. He said ok again, told me it'd be about 9 minutes and hung up. Something about the phone call left me not entirely sure he actually got what I was saying. When I went to pick it up they had made 2 burritos instead of 1, we went over what I had asked for to be added and they assured me that everything was in the burrito except for 1 thing which they didn't hear (sour cream but they did give me a side of it!). I get home and start eating the burrito and realize the other things I added, that they assured me were in the burrito, weren't. I had asked for guacamole, pico de gallo, and cheese and none of that was in the burrito, it was just their Regular Burrito. The burrito wasn't particularly great either. Ultimately I was disappointed especially considering they charged me for the extra things (which I was more than happy to pay had they actually been somewhere in the the burrito or even the bag) and I used to love this place growing up. read more

I saw in a chat room, this place had the best Burrito in Santa Maria. So.... I had to try this place. The Surf n turf burrito was delicious! The chiliques were amazing.... But the best thing was La Unica Fries! If you love meat, you have to try these out! The staff was friendly, honest and full of suggestions. Meh. My mom had some carne asada tacos she thought were amazing. So I brought my husband here and we were completely underwhelmed by the food and the service. I ordered "Shrimp Nachos", and the guy taking my order replied by asking, "Carne Asada?" I said "No, shrimp." I got carne asada. When my husband took them back and told him it was supposed to be shrimp, the guy actually said that I said Carne Asada. I haven't been a meat eater in 15 years, I guarantee you I didnt. The nachos were supposed to come with guacamole, and they did not. Overall, just very underwhelming flavor and presentation. My husband got a burrito that fell apart into a greasy mess on his plate. Their fish taco was subpar and the salsa tasted weird very watery. The portions are small and the beans tasted kind of weird not like authentic refried beans The guacamole was tasty. The cashier was friendly and accommodating the manager or supervisor wasn't helpful or accommodating in regards to portions I was looking for children's meal for my young nephews and there is no kids menu. This place used to better in the 90s early 2000s and their menu was simpler. It is an ok place if you are in the area and desperate for some fast Mexican food. Great experience at La Unica, menudo and pozole everyday so you knew I had to get one of them. Really enjoyed the menudo, generous portion and a lot of tripe. The tacos were delicious as well, the lengua just melts it's so soft. Great service, will look to come again next time I'm back in the area. read more

went there today for lunch at 1:30 ordered 2 burritos asada and carnitas and nacho supreme. order came up very fast . The food was terrible!! No flavor , wasn't hot, carnitas were dry and burrito couldn't even taste onion or cilantro in it. tortilla wasn't even hot nacho chips were cold , beans no flavor , carne asada chopped up like dog food with no flavor . The carne on nachos the same way . No one was even in there and they could have made fresh fried chips but instead there was a bowl of chips under the counter with no cover just sitting there. Shrimp Tacos had 3 beefy shrimps, really good guacamole and chipotle sauce. Surf and turf was ok, tortilla could have been cooked a bit longer. Birria Tacos didn't taste like traditional birria flavored Tacos. Flavor was pretty bland, but the torilla was cooked well. Consome was so so. First time here, staff are friendly. They don't have combos for quesa birria but I asked if they can do it and nicely enough they did! With a drink the total came out to $16.00. I kid you not, the quesa birria was delicious packed with flavor, and the consome was very flavorful and dipping the quesa birria only made it more delicious--I'm not kidding! I would say the rice is a bit dry for my liking but the beans were delicious! I will definitely come back and try other things on the menu. read more

I hope the owner's read this review because we won't be going back to La Unica. Please pay attention to the date of this post to determine who it was taking orders the register (name unknown) at approximately 5:40pm. The guy taking orders must have been having a bad day and was just short and rude. Maybe he just didn't want to be there today. When we got home it was like they purposely screwed up our order. We ordered asada tots and they were absolutely plain, no meat. We ordered 3 pastor tacos with no onions and all of them had a handful of onions each. We ordered a tri-tip burrito with extra onions and no cilantro and it came with no onions and extra cilantro. How is it possible they screwed up on everything? I get that sometimes mistakes are made, but what are the chances that everything is wrong. The only thing I can think of is that it was done on purpose. Even with the cashier being short and rude, I still left a couple bucks in the tip jar. What made me write this review is the fact that they literally screwed us on everything we ordered. There's just no way it could be an accident. With so many good Mexican restaurants in the Santa Maria Valley you would think service and food quality would be a top priority. Especially with so much competition, oh not to mention the 20-30 food trucks with no overhead (and the City of Santa Maria not regulating them). It's hard enough for you brick and mortar restaurants to survive. I love the birria tacos, $4 each w no cheese or $4.50 w cheese... totally worth it cuz each bite is delicious with lots of tender meat. Their salsas are spicy, flavorful n perfect with burrito, taco, even fries. I really enjoyed the carne asada fries. Carne asada plate is awesome w lots of grilled onions n sliced jalapeños. Every time i'm in town i come and support this restaurant bc i grew up eating here. I probably won't be back after today. I called in to place an order.. while i was talking the man who answered, hung up. When I got there I told them i was the one who called and it was rude to hang up while someone is talking. I went into La Unica for the first to this evening, and to be completely honest I'm just sick literally and figuratively. The amount of money (125.00) for my son and I?! No appetizers, no drink's, and 125.00?! That's just pure insanity. It'd be one thing if the service, care and food were even half way decent, but EVERYTHING my son and I ordered was either thrown out or is packaged up with absolutely no intention of trying it again. I've been really ill, I battle with an autoimmune disease so I haven't been able to eat in 2-3 day's. You'd think a meal .... while I can't say hot, more like lukewarm at best would be great but no (at least I did) it was the worst thing I've consumed in God knows how long. Family came here for the Birria ramen and Mac & Cris burrito. Both were very good, restaurant was very clean and fast and friendly service.

I've been going here for over a decade and throughout that time they have kept up a consistent quality. I appreciate their willingness to experiment with new and creative menu items. Although their prices have always been on the steeper side compared to other similar restaurants The overall quality and portion helps mediate that. As with any Mexican restaurant it depends on time of day and a bit of luck whether or not you'll be getting a fresh batch of ingredients or they're scraping the bottom of the barrel for your order. Notable standouts are there al pastor, everyone does it different but I enjoy theirs a lot. Recently tried a surf and turf burrito and it was delicious The creamy Chipotle sauce works well with the grilled shrimp. As for their Birria menu items I'd have to say there's much room for improvement. Everything seems to be their visually but it just doesn't click. The consumme' broth is very bland and watery consumme' literally translates to "reduction or concentration" I think if they take better care too improve The recipe and reduce the broth they could have a real winner on their hands. read more

I absolutely LOVE La Unica! Alicia and her team are amazing at creating authentic Mexican food in and also have so many items on the menu with a fun California twist. My personal favorites are their burritos- all types are carefully crafted and for some could be enough for 2 meals! If you want to guarantee it to last you 2 meals, you could always just order any burrito as a monster burrito with 2 tortillas.
