So I am updating my review for backstory I guess, it took 7 years for me to finally feel confident about driving a 1989 Volkswagen Jetta to get the ac fixed. When I bought it - I used half of my savings after being on a contract to drive trucks across America for a year; I needed it for new jobs and to move. its my first and only car I've ever owned. I'd had the car since; I don't know I reviewed the place I bought it from when I bought it; you can find it on my Yelp. [10 years ago?] I've attached receipt from when I got my first estimate to fix the ac which is what I went here for, but, was too flat broke to think I could afford getting something like that back then. Too scared since I' don't know a lot about cars. So it pains me; that when I finally confidently had my car well; and had a good paying job that something 30+/hr like this would happen. I'm just attaching messages I recently saw that sparked me to add this backstory, I've had the car a long time; I know stuff goes after a while. I'm not on Yelp often unless I'm like; researching a place which I have been saving my money so I haven't been doing that a lot, as I haven't been shopping. I'm glad to read that there is professionalism happening at this establishment, it is very clean, the cleanest shop I've ever been to. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Its family oriented; I don't have a lot of family but, for those that do its good to know you'll be treated well here.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I am curious though that the review strata is either 1 or 5 stars like; destroyed my car, did damage or like... The best place ever; kinda weird that my initial review was the only one that was like weighing pros and cons of all the reviews but, whatever.. I'm not going to go into this anymore, I know what happened with me and all those stories I heard on the road - I thought they were just stories til now. But I've done things I'm not proud of; nothing nearly like this but, I know they happen. I know some mechanics get commission now; so ya, I would never; I will not be buying a car after this if my car truly dies; I've never had any intention of replacing my car; I am very grateful I got an amazing scholarship after this incidence but, living in a mobile home in a city where the tap water burns your mouth to save money at my work place because I could no longer commute to my work place to replace my engine after this was quite an experience that I as someone who believes in restorative justice wouldn't necessarily encourage for people. [run on sentence, I know] [[HIGHLIGHT]]What is really awkward to me is I felt like it was a threat telling me my vacuum pump for the brakes needed to be replaced when I brought my concerns initially to Mike and staff; an now I am getting Yelp messages like this; when this person has my phone number...[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Not that after going through something like this who would really want to be answering or believe anything good from it. I digress, of everything that has happened since I went here, I still haven't replaced anything with the brakes; So, kind of wondering what the logic there was, a shot in the dark maybe. Several mechanics have refuted that statement outright regarding my brakes. Oh except the cap for the brake fluid reservoir, that's been broken since I bought the car; I guess it wasn't worth enough money to mention, much like fixing a few other things on my car. Its awkward to me after this I'm the most financially solvent I've ever been though I've had to fight a lot on this issue. I am much wiser for the experience; I would not recommend going here to anyone; I suppose unless you have a big family who might; weigh in on your behalf - which I do not, I'm pretty much alone most of the time, so if you're maybe a potential new resident for skid row in society; stay very clear of this place, you might find both your feet happily put into that grave bringing your car here. I do take the train a lot now as I'm an engineering student; and I've zooped up a scooter to go 40 miles range now by attaching another battery in parallel. So I don't need a car anymore at all. The school has gotten a grant for the train so I am not hemorrhaging as badly as I could be. I would recommend you not have a car if you saw what I saw. Picture of me on the train, receipt from my first AC estimate when I was like whoa, not confident enough to get this work near where I used to live, and a picture of me in front of the mobile home I stayed in for a month to pay for a new engine - the last thing I ever expected to buy in my life its called a "long block" if you don't know; I did not. SO YEA this was awful for me and I am surprised and disgusted at how readily people were to throw their lot in with this happening to me; this recent comment echoes that marginalization - like... If my car dies it will be a permanent reminder the community failing me; no money will make up for that failure. I love my car dearly and its painful that I may be seeing its end for my bad choice to go here not once but twice.

    My 1990 Honda Civic Si
 Daily and Weekend Race Car

I found Mike and his shop by searching for a shop that could repair electrical harness on Google since my 1990 Honda Civic Si needed a lot of electrical work. I had just finished rebuilding the engine, but was in desperate need of electrical work from an experienced hand. His shop not only did what was needed, but they went above and beyond to make sure everything was in perfect condition. They fixed my blower motor, my lighting system for my turn signals, my O2 sensor wire gremlin that was affecting my smog test, the cooling fan, my security alarm system (while removing the old one and organizing everything neatly), and helping organizing all of my wires under my dash to ensure a tidy cabin. I can't thank him and his team enough for treating me right with a fair price, amazing labor, and the integrity to fix something that was previously worked on that was still acting up without hesitation. I will be endorsing his shop on my race car and suggesting his shop to anyone looking for electrical work on their vehicle! Thank you Mike and please extend my thanks to your team! Charles

I took my F-type Jaguar here and was extremely happy with the experience. Jag's have a reputation for electrical problems so when the control panel starting doing weird stuff I was dreading the bad news and repair costs. I know taking the car to the dealer in Newport was going to be expensive....it always is, so I made a few phone calls to local shops and found Auto Electric Repair on Gothard, not far from my house. They were able to determine that the problem was very minor and not a major ordeal like I thought. I am extremely grateful for their honesty and professionalism. I've been telling all my friends about this shop and will continue to do so. It's hard to find honest repair shops if your girl.

Took my tow truck in that no one else was willing to touch. 2 weeks later a laundry list of things were fixed and I've had issues since.

Francisco not only reattached it, he also went ahead and tested my truck for free to make sure it could pass the smog check I needed for the DMV. He did a series of tests to see what was working and anything that may become an issue in the future, just for my knowledge. He also pulled my CarFax report for free without me even inquiring! He took the time to explain how my tailgate and its different components worked, even printing out a diagram for me so I could clearly understand my options. We discussed ways to prevent my tailgate from being tampered with or stolen in the future, and he explained what would be my best options based on safety, longevity, and cost-effectiveness. He took time after I had already left to research the right parts that would achieve what I wanted without unnecessarily driving up the cost. It's the behind the scenes work like this that I appreciate the most. His recommendations were confident and knowledgeable, but I never once felt pressured. For example, Francisco let me know that I needed an oil change, but he never tried to push me into getting one that day. He understood that my immediate concern was the tailgate, and he respected that. I was actually the one who asked whether he performed oil changes. Suffice it to say, I'll be skipping Valvoline this time and bringing my truck back to Francisco and Pearl. Pearl made sure I was comfortable while I waited and offered me full bottles of either cold or room-temperature water. That may sound like a small detail, but it meant so much more than meets the eye. Those thoughtful touches are what separate businesses that genuinely care about their customers from places that make you feel like just another person in an assembly line of others who need help too. Pearl is such a warm, personable person, and making conversation with her was genuinely lovely. I'm currently in a tight spot financially, and both Francisco and Pearl were sensitive to that without ever making me feel embarrassed or treating me differently. I never felt like a dollar sign. I was treated with dignity and given the same time, care, and respect as anyone else who walked through the door. As a woman, I've experienced a sexist gap in how I'm treated when dealing with automotive work. I've had unnecessary services pushed on me, been ignored when asking questions, or been made to feel like I shouldn't try to understand what was being done to my truck. That was absolutely not my experience here. Francisco explained everything clearly, answered my questions, and made sure I understood my choices. It's impossible not to feel safe and taken care of when he is working on your vehicle and walking you through your options. When I recently noticed a problem with my radio, I immediately called FNP to ask whether Francisco could look at it when I return to have a safety guard installed on my tailgate. He added it to my notes, and now I can let go of that worry knowing he'll examine it and tell me honestly what the best next step is. Their administrative workflow has been perfected to allow for notes like this, quotes being sent and accepted/denied, etc. The process is smooth, start to finish. I have never had a better experience with an auto repair shop. Francisco and Pearl truly went above and beyond. Trust me: you will not regret going to FNP. These are exactly the kind of people and small businesses worth supporting, and I plan to be a customer of theirs for a very long time.

FNP Auto reached out in under 5 minutes. Francisco handled everything right. Clear communication, no guessing, no runaround. Broke down parts, labor, and timing so I knew exactly what was happening. UPDATE: What I discovered after posting my original review made this experience considerably worse…read more My family brought vehicles to Gustafson Brothers for three generations--my grandparents, my mother, and then me. We kept supporting them because they are a longtime Huntington Beach business. That history is exactly why this feels like such a betrayal of trust. I paid $631.30 after bringing in my van for a long-crank/hard-start problem. The invoice included $182.50 for a crank/no-start investigation and stated: "The 'long crank' has been eliminated." It had not been eliminated. I returned because the same problem remained. Gustafson then identified a weak fuel pump--the same component I had told them from the beginning that I suspected. I tried to resolve this reasonably. I did not demand a large refund. I asked them to apply some compensation toward basic fluid maintenance the van needed. They refused. I later discovered another serious problem with the work. The invoice charged $19.98 for positive and negative battery terminals and $182.50 in labor to install them: $202.48 total. Less than a month later, my van suddenly lost electrical power while I was in Long Beach. When I opened the hood, one newly installed terminal was so loose I could move it by hand. Tightening it did not make it clamp securely to the battery post. The other newly installed terminal was also loose, and wiring had come loose at the connection. This became a recurring loss-of-power problem. I repeatedly had to improvise temporary connections just to finish trips because the terminals would not securely fit the battery posts. I am not accusing anyone of doing this intentionally. I have no evidence of intent. I do not need to speculate. The workmanship I personally found is troubling enough. If a professional repair shop charges $182.50 in labor to install two $9.99 battery terminals, expecting both connections to remain secure for more than a month is not an unreasonable standard. The van's transmission later failed. I am not claiming Gustafson caused that failure. I cannot establish that, and I want this review to remain factual. But after already paying for an unresolved diagnosis and then dealing with poorly fitted battery connections, the added financial damage was devastating. There is one final detail prospective customers should know. After my negative Yelp review appeared, the owner contacted us. My impression was that the conversation focused more on what could be done about the review than on beginning with an apology, understanding what had gone wrong, or correcting the work to a professional standard. After three generations of family patronage, that was perhaps the most revealing part. I did not expect special treatment. I expected competent work, fair treatment, and accountability. What I received was: * $631.30 paid. * $419.75 in labor. * $182.50 for a long-crank investigation that the invoice said had "eliminated" the problem. It had not. * $182.50 in labor to install $19.98 in battery terminals. * Both new connections loose less than a month later after the van lost electrical power. * A reasonable request for compensation through needed maintenance refused. Three generations of loyalty ended with me. Get another estimate. Keep every invoice. Get every promise in writing. Inspect the work before leaving--or avoid the expense and aggravation altogether.
