Per our friend's recommendation, our family of 8 had a dinner the first time at this'hidden gem last night. It is pretty nice and cozy restaurant. The menu offers fusion Vietnamese and French dishes. We ordered Salmon Wellingtons, Grass Fed Fillet Mignons, Papaya Salad, Rotisserie Chicken... Bread and butter served first. Then not too long foods came out . All dishes nicely presented and so good! About Fillet Mignon, my daughter complimented: it is better than The Papilion but at 1/3 of the price! The waitress was very attentive, refilled water and removed used dishes timely! My papaya salad was very good ! My wife loves her Rotisserie Chicken. The chicken was tender and seasoned with the French - Vietnamese way that we love! We finished our dinner with yummy cream brulee, chocolate icecream and Vietnamese milk coffees. Nice and warm restaurant Top notch service Fantastic foods at 1/3 price comparing to other places! We came here for our anniversary dinner, having read positive reviews for Elements. Euro-Asian - interesting! It's a relatively smaller restaurant and seems to be family run, with friendly staff and good service. Big wine enclosure, a separate bar area. We started out with the quail appetizer, which was a little disappointing. The quail seemed overcooked, which I'd imagine is easy to do with such a small bird, but both the cook and flavor were nothing to write home about. Just too dry. I'm not one who loves to deal with the difficulty of eating something small with minimal meat, but am more than willing to if it's prepared well and tastes great, but this didn't meet either mark. I think a closer to correct cook would have helped a lot. However, the other dishes were very good. The tea flavored duck was prepared VERY well, nice cook and delicately flavored. Liked this one a lot. Some taro there as well for carb/starch lovers - also good. I would definitely order this again. The Salmon Wellington was overall good - I think it could have been a bit more seasoned, but overall, we still enjoyed it. I'd likely not order this again, not because it wasn't good, but I'd want to try other dishes on the menu. The mango panna cotta was overall good. Not special, but solid. We'd come back here again. My husband and I came here for dinner last night a little before 6pm without making a reservation. We got seated right away. While the restaurant was quite busy by the time we left, it wasn't completely full. Decor was modern and comfortable; nothing fancy, but they did have a cool wine storage area surrounded by glasses in the middle. Since they mentioned on their online menu that there's a longer prep time for the Salmon Wellington, we placed an order of it as soon as we sat down while deciding what else to order. For starter, we split the Five Spice Rotisserie Quails. They're quite flavorful, just a bit on the dry side. The Salmon Wellington and Tea-Smoke Duck arrived shortly after we finished the quails and washed our hands. The presentation of the dishes was fantastic. While the puff pastry could be cooked a bit more and the salmon could use more seasonings, the salmon was well cooked, the sauce was quite delicious and the dish was just so beautiful. The duck dish had a very nice smoky aroma, the taro and cranberry reduction was delicious. While the fresh apple slices provided a nice crunch, I would prefer some kind of apple compote. We ended our meal with a mango panna cotta. While the panna cotta was quite thick and not as soft and wobbly as what we're used to, it's still very enjoyable together with the mango sauce, and the plating was top-notch. Service was friendly. Our water was refilled promptly. Complimentary bread was nice and warm. Despite its unassuming store front, and in the middle of nowhere location, Elements offers real bang for the buck delicious fusion dishes with interesting combinations and flavors. Do not let the ther appearance fool you. Nestled in the Almaden Center shopping mall, Elements Restaurant might appear unassuming from the outside. However, once you step inside, you're greeted with an amazing dining experience that far surpasses initial impressions. Ambiance and Decor: The interior is modern and tastefully designed, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. A standout feature is the glass wine cellar situated at the center of the restaurant, adding a touch of elegance. Even the restrooms are impeccably clean--a detail that reflects the establishment's commitment to excellence. The quail was expertly prepared with a mild teriyaki glaze and accompanied by a fresh side salad. Both appetizers set a high standard for the rest of the meal. For the main course, we ordered the Combination Vermicelli with Prawns and Egg Roll, requesting prawns only. The dish came in a large bowl with a side sauce and was abundant with prawns--enough to satisfy two diners. The highlight was the Salmon Wellington. Presented beautifully, the salmon was wrapped in spinach and encased in crispy puff pastry, resting on a bed of delicious lemon beurre sauce and asparagus. Words can't do justice to how amazing this dish was; we found ourselves using the fresh bread to savor every last bit of the sauce. Again, the portion was generous enough for two. Wine List: The wine list is very good and the prices are very reasonable. Service and Experience: From our seating area, we could view the kitchen through a large window, watching the owner chef work his magic. The service was impeccable throughout the evening. We personally thanked the chef for the incredible experience. Conclusion: The combination of superb service, excellent presentation, inviting ambiance, and reasonable prices made for an unforgettable dining experience. I only wish we had discovered Elements Restaurant sooner. It's perfect for a romantic dinner or special occasion, yet the pricing makes it suitable for any day of the week. We came here during the 4th July week and it was really nice to try a Vietnamese French place after a long time. The service was great. It was not busy given that this was a long weekend and most people were probably out of town. The ambience was nice - contemporary and neat. I ordered their soup special which was Butternut Squash (for $15 it was very expensive according to me). We also got the sea bass and salmon that came with a lot of vegetables which was great. The sea bass was very well cooked with the right flavors and presentation was great. The herb crusted salmon was overcooked a bit and it lost its tenderness. Quiet, not too busy on Saturday night, well lit so even though it's a nice place I'm not struggling to walk and tripping all over myself. Decorated nicely for a date night or special occasion. Soft shell crab was very tasty, not too dry and not too much batter. Papaya salad was not too acidic but the prawn is just 2 at the top instead of mixed in the salad just FYI. I had cravings for scallop and was not disappointed, the sauce was just right amount of creamy and savory. Great flavor and cooked just right. My husband has the smoked duck and was cooked right but the flavor is a little too sweet to our liking but not their fault just not what we would get again for our taste. Nice and pleasantly surprised to find such a nice (and expensive) restaurant located in a somewhat sleepy Safeway plaza in Almaden area. French style with Asian flavors. Service was excellent and friendly. Tried calamari, chicken "and" wonton soup (not), seabass, shrimp / scallops risotto and their salmon Wellington. All dishes were excellent, the soup which was described as chicken and wonton soup was spectacular only there was no chicken other than what was inside the wonton. It should be chicken wonton and not chicken "and" wonton. Broth had a nice mouthfeel and flavor to it. Wontons soft and pillowy. Lots of fresh veggies. The seabass was also a star. Fish was good portion, perfectly cooked with a nice coating and flavorful curry sauce. Risotto with shrimp and scallops dish, while not a traditional Italian style risotto, was still excellent and the seafood perfectly executed and flavorful. Salmon Wellington was interesting, with a nice pastry puff shell covering a nicely and large piece of freshly cooked salmon. All dishes were served with nice portions of fresh vegetables. Had our holiday company dinner this year at Elements after trying it one night just before they closed. It's in a strip mall off of Almaden in South San Jose. But once you walk inside, it feels classy with a big glass wine cellar to the right, and an open kitchen towards the back. The restaurant is family-owned and operated. The chef and his father both work there, with possibly more family working other positions. It was packed with patrons on a Friday night. Their fusion cuisine is quite unique in that it is more French and Western than Vietnamese. So there are dishes such as Salmon Wellington that you would never see at a Vietnamese restaurant. For appetizers we ordered fried softshell crab, spring rolls and green salad. All solid in terms of taste and freshness. For entrees, each person at our table ordered a different dish. I ordered the Salmon Wellington, which was nicely breaded, in a plate of cream. There was a thick cheese inside the breading surrounding the perfectly cooked salmon. I tried the Australian rack of lamb, also well cooked and seasoned. The desserts were not quite on the level of the entrees. My colleagues had to chip away at the peach sorbet because it was frozen solid. The chocolate cake was spongy and tasty, but the ice cream on top was ordinary. The drink menu was somewhat of a surprise in that they didn't have any cocktails. Unsurprisingly, they had a wide variety of wine and some beer, but I had expected some creative cocktails given the food menu but I guess I didn't see a bar there. If you happen to be on the south side and want to have a unique French-Vietnamese meal, I recommend Elements. read more

We tried quite a bit of the menu and our experience was that most of our dishes came out great and delicious! Here's what we ordered: Appetizers: Complementary Bread Fresh Spring Rolls: $15 (4/5) Plumped sized shrimp rolls (3 large rolls but cut in half) with a creamy peanut sauce Grill Beef on Asparagus: $16 (4/5) Asparagus with beef wrapped around it with banh hoi on top and a refreshing nuoc mam sauce (4 of them) Crispy Soft-Shell Crabs: $19 (5/5) Get this you wont be disappointed. When John's mom suggested we go here to celebrate John's dad's birthday a month ago, I was excited. We had never been and the menu intrigued me. But unfortunately the experience didn't live up to my expectations. The ladies who took care of us were wonderful. However, timing was an issue for the night including having to flag someone down to get our bill. Not to mention it was a hot day and the a/c didn't seem to be on or set low. The food was just okay. Came here for my aunts bday dinner and was pleasantly surprised! Always a little skeptical about Asian fusion foods, but elements balanced true Asian flavors with hints of European influence here and there! I really liked the chicken, instead of having the typical savory flavor roasted chicken has, it has almost like a tangy brine flavor to it and the roasted veggies balanced it out really nicely. The Element in the Room Long-running (±19 years) family-owned restaurant that's located in a nondescript strip mall in San José's Almaden Valley. Elements focus on upscale Vietnamese cooking with heavy French influences. The Good: *Reservations the old-fashioned way by calling *Crispy Soft Shell Crab app was delicious and crispy, and I loved the aioli accompaniment. *Complimentary Baguettes is a nice touch *Tea-smoked Duck was absolutely fabulous! The duck was tender and had a great smokey flavor. The taro "au gratin"--which was not really an "au gratin," but I digress--mixed with the spinach, cranberry reduction, and smokey duck was a fabulous bite. It's really quite epic. *Carissa's Herbal (sic) Crusted Salmon was cooked perfectly, and the lemon beurre blanc sauce was terrific. *Staff was really nice and tried hard, but they got overworked and overwhelmed at one point (see below). The Meh: *Spring Rolls were just decent, and for $15, I want better than decent. Their texture was too springy, and the concomitant peanut sauce was just lacking in flavor. *Took over twenty minutes to get our check. The two poor old ladies were running around like chickens with their heads cut off once the restaurant started to fill up. It really was a clown show at one point, and I could've watched it all night--if I wasn't dying of heat exhaustion! 0_o (see below) *Need a better beer selection as all they had were macrobrews. The Ugly: *We dined in during a recent heatwave, and they must've had the AC set on 80°F or not even on because I was schvitzing like Britney Spears on Jeopardy®. I mean not just a trickle of sweat, but a full-on schvitz. I really wanted to try their dessert menu, but at that point in the evening, I just wanted to GTFOH. By saving money, they're costing themselves money. But, what do I know? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Conclusion: Jekyll and Hyde experience at Elements, as on the one hand, the food overall was quite good to excellent, but the rest of the experience was passable at best. We have gone here several times and every time the food has been delicious. This is by far the best hidden gem in south San Jose! The salmon wellington is mouthwatering and far and away one of the best wellingtons we have ever had. The Vietnamese cuisine is excellent as well. One of our guests is an experienced restauranter with a very finicky palate and he was very impressed! We've been back a few times for dinner since my last review. The last dinner we got, the chef was willing to make us pho even though that was a lunch item menu. It was so delicious, clean, and the meat was so good quality, we thought we'd try our luck again. Unfortunately, this time, our server said they weren't serving pho despite us calling at lunch time to check if they would serve for dinner. Since we were already there, thought we might as well get a good dinner in. We tried the butternut squash soup, the garden mixed green salad, the half rotisserie chicken, and the salmon wellington. While all the dishes were good, refined, well cooked, and well seasoned, each had a factor of slight disappointment. The soup was yummy (avoid if you don't like cinnamon), but small portioned and expensive at $15. The garden mixed salad promised orange, pear, and bleu cheese among other things, but we somehow missed all those ingredients or flavors, and instead there were beets. No real complaints about the rotisserie chicken (except that pho wasn't available); had a crispy skin, tender and juicy, mashed potatoes were creamy, au jus had a good flavor, and the veggies were nicely cooked and seasoned. The salmon wellington, also good, and while we knew it might take a little longer for that one to come out as indicated on the menu, we didn't realize it would take 45 minutes. The server should have informed us (the table next to us were informed of the wait and their dish was immediately put in, but by then, we had already been served our food). We were sufficiently full and opted out of dessert. While service was fine, for a restaurant that touts on being more upscale, there were a few misses. Maybe we need to stick to their lunch menu and come then. We did order a chicken banh mi to go, which was decently priced at $9 - the bread was nice and crispy, plenty of chicken, but could have used more pickled veggies. read more

Ambiance A mix of upscale and casual ambiance that I am not sure works that well with lighting that's neither here nor there. I feel like it could be better if the lighting and arrangement lean towards more intimate. Instead of table cloth, they use paper cover on the tables. Small bar area and wine display corner that were not used at all while we were there. I think the in-between feel just doesn't work well to make it a hang out type of a bar. Food presentation was more of an upscale place. Service Excellent with courteous and friendly service. Good interval check-ins for water refill and plate replacement between appetizer and main course. It was good, par for the course. Food The crispy soft-shell crab was not as I expected, the crispy part was the outer batter, not the crab shell. Too heavy and affected our enjoyment of the main course, which would probably have been better if it was not for the appetizer. The tea-smoked duck was ok, some slices were a bit tough, some were tender, didn't really get the tea taste from the duck slices nor the sauce. Though it was probably better that way to give a more lighter flavor after the oily feel of the crispy crab appetizer. The rack of lamb, we got it medium rare, 3 good sized slices and it was good. The mashed potato that came with it was really smooth with an interesting aroma that probably came from whatever crunchy stuff they added. The sauce was also good, worked well with the mashed potato and lamb. Went to this place hoping to get to the dessert part, but we were so stuffed that we just can't. Had to skip. Cost/Tipping I think the cost was maybe a bit on the high side for the food. Total was almost $100 for the 3 dishes before tax/tips. Paid with credit card, they left the printed receipt on the table to fill up the tips and total amount with lowest suggestion amount of 18%. read more

We came here on a whim so I texted about 15 minutes before to make a reservation but it wasn't needed anyway (around 6 pm on a Saturday night). The inside of the restaurant is beautiful with soft lighting and striking paintings adorning the walls. The complimentary sourdough bread was pillowy soft and I think the butter on the side was the whipped kind. Very tasty. We ordered the mixed greens salad because we mistakenly thought there wouldn't be any vegetables on most of the entrees but probably wouldn't get this again. It wasn't bad but not memorable either. It had pears, mandarin oranges, and walnuts with mixed greens and an orange dressing. The wait for the rest of the food was about 40 minutes but that might have been due to the rack of lamb. But we all thought the food was excellent! The portions and plates were huge too. The cranberry worked well with the tea-smoked duck. The taro au gratin was like a firm version of mashed potatoes (and mixed with grated cheese). The dish also came with three apple slices and a small layer of spinach and carrots beneath the taro. The lamb came with a decent amount of vegetables - broccoli, brussel sprouts, bok choy, green beans, and carrots. We ordered it medium rare and it was incredibly easy to cut and bite through. I would have given a 4 star rating but gave 2 instead because of how the waitress acted when we got to the restaurant. In fairness, we were greeted by a male staff, told him we have a reservation for 3 at 6pm and he ushered us to our table. When we got there, there were other customers already that occupied 3 other tables. This is when the 2 star review is coming from. After we got seated, the waitress ( with a red/auburn hair) , short and petite came to our table, did not introduce or even said her name and started asking if we are ready to order . We replied we just got seated and we are still looking at the menu. Then she said we have to order already because it might get busy later on that people might start coming in and she might not be able to get our order then. In short, we felt so rushed to order then she started giving suggestions on what we can order from the appetizer . We said we have yet to check. She left then few minutes came back and we ordered the appetizers, about 5 of them. Few minutes after she came again to ask if we are ready to order , with same tone like rushing us to order now. Finally we ordered 3 entrees cause there were 3 of us. This is the funny part though, when she saw us finished our meal she came to our table and said " take your time and habe a great weekend". Me and my friends just looked at each other , surprised of what she said, like earlier on she was rushing us then when we were done eating she said to take our time. Like, whaaattt??? There were six of us for dinner and we unanimously agreed that it was a very good experience. Their wine selection is considerable and carefully chosen. We had the calamari and tuna carpaccio appetizers, a Caesar salad, a roast beet salad, the sea bass special, and two different seafood pastas. I had the sea bass and really enjoyed it: the fish was fresh, flaky and cooked to perfection, as were the al dente vegetables and chewy rice. I am usually not one for sauces, but this one was light, nicely flavored with lemongrass, and a exactly the right complement to this well-rounded dish. The chef definitely has a well-executed vision. My hubby read somewhere that Elements had delicious food so we stopped by for lunch. Nice place with good service. He chose their Banh Mi with beef and I ordered the Grilled Chicken salad with spicy peanut sauce. Both dishes were meh. My salad was beautifully presented and full of chicken. But my dressing was not spicy. We may have made some wrong choices. But their prices are tad high. read more
