We stopped by here to pick up some croissants after being told by a friend that they have the best croissants in Rhode Island! As a lover of bread, we had to check it out when we were in town. Because of the timing of everything, we didn't have room in our stomachs for the croissants till the day after, but we had the quiche of the day pretty soon after we picked it up and enjoyed it! Came with a nice side salad as well. While the croissants were day old, they were still delicious - and I could only imagine how amazing they'd be if we had a toaster... Next time! What really made me come write the review though was the monkey bread. The monkey bread was hands down one of the best monkey breads I've ever had! Wonderful atmosphere and staff is super accommodating and friendly. Latte and chai teas were attractive and delicious. Both my DH and I enjoyed the Ouefs en Cocotte, a light dish of eggs with wild mushrooms, a light green sauce, microgreens and shredded gruyere. Husband's was served with sourdough toast. Since I am GF, mine had a rosemary 'wheat-free" English muffin. Only complaints is that the English muffin needed to be toasted more with some butter. A little dry and cold for my taste, but nice flavors. Definitely will come again next time we are in Providence. read more

My husband and I went to breakfast there this morning and oh my goodness this place is a must try! Skip the chain places like Starbucks and Cafe Nero and walk to Ellie's. I got a Vanilla Latte that was so smooth and perfectly flavored (not too sweet, but still had notes of vanilla). We also ordered the Almond Croissant and Raspberry Rose Croissant: heavenly! They're giant, so I had to take half of each to go. Then, we got the quiche! FLAVORFUL and the crust was delicious! Everything except the hot latte came out almost immediately! Though there was a little bit of a line, the cashier was quick and everyone had somewhere to sit! We sat at the counter, but there were families and people working eating there as well! What a fantastic gem of a place. We wandered in on a snowy Sunday afternoon for some tea, and staying for a delicious brunch/lunch. We tried the famous roasted pork belly sandwich with pepper jelly, spicy mayo, broccoli rabe and crispy provolone cheese! We also tried a wonderful French toast special. Ellie's is a Providence must. I don't remember them having an option other than pork sausage. The croissant was really good especially with the jam or preserves they put on there. Fun busy cafe on a Sunday morning! There's a line the entire time that I'm there, and I guess it's a great place for people watching on a Sunday morning (I was visiting from nyc). The breakfast egg sandwich has hints of nutmeg (not my favorite spice in most dishes), and I don't see anything special. Iced cortado is alright, and the croissant isn't bad. You order at the counter and find a table, and we didn't have any trouble finding a place to sit as they have many tables both indoors and outdoors. I ordered a turkey BLT and a blood orange hibiscus iced tea. The tea was unique and really tasty. The sandwich was classic and well executed. After enjoying lunch, I decided to get one of their highly rated croissants to go - I tried the raspberry lemon cheesecake croissant. It was INCREDIBLE!! Late evening dessert with a great cocktail menu. As expected, slim pickings when you get there 1 hr before close, but we managed to order the last 2 slices of pina colada cake (soaked in rum). Delicious and not too sweet as you might imagine and nut free. Not pictured, but equally tasty was the crème brûlée, macarons and hazelnut pudding. The coffee, well, if you like a legit cup that's prepared the European way, this is you spot. The cappuccino actually tastes like coffee not warm milk with a hint of coffee. I have been wanting to try all of the pastries at Ellie's for a long time. I recently found myself wanting to try more macaroons and knew Ellie's had them. We tried a few different flavors: pistachio, lemon lavender, chocolate peanut butter, and caramel apple spice. All of them were tasty but not really my style. The flavors were a bit too strong, I could only finish the chocolate one. The other sweets we tried were kind of meh. The macaroon "crunch bar" tasted like a protein bar and the bouchon just wasn't as yummy as it looked. The star of the show, however, was their chocolate chip toffee cookie. That was definitely delicious. A little hint of salt made all the flavors of the chocolate & toffee even better. Everything we got was tiny and came to $16. So prices are definitely high. The space is nice, but the layout is a bit clustered with a big pillar in the middle and it can get quite busy, making it feel hectic. They are known for their cakes and pastries, though, which I definitely agree are the highlight of their menu. They also offer baking classes, although they are quite pricey. Outside of the sweets, I'm a bit less impressed with their offerings. Food and coffee is good, but there are other options nearby that are cheaper and, in my opinion, better. I will say the presentation at Ellie's is always great if you're dining in, so if you're into the aesthetic of your meal or coffee you'll enjoy it. read more

Ellies is a quaint bakery on Weybosset Street in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. It has the style and feel of the European boulangerie. They offer lunch (sandwiches and soups) and dinner (full meals) and walk in Café and prices are not too high. The coffee is very good, as is the pastries... The kounin aman pastry is incredible and the bostock bread is great. Ellies egg sandwiches are also amazing... I don't think there is anything here that isn't good. You can't go wrong with any of your choices - they are all great. The staff here is incredibly friendly, They will be happy to help you out and help you choose what you want to eat if needed. read more
