I love coming here, usually the staff and service are great but tonight I came with bae and the service was poor as soon as we came in. We were rudely pointed to a booth and asked if we even needed menus or knew what we wanted. Of course we need menus we're a f**king diner and there's more sh*t here than the Cheesecake Factory. But after getting menus finally we were told we needed to move from this booth so they could mop and had to move to another section. The waitress tried to play nice after all this but the first impression poor still. She also commented about how when we came in there was only an after left of being open... I will start out by saying that I never expect a fine dining experience when I go to a diner. I will also say that I expect to tip 20%, adjusted downward to 15% for so-so service, and upward for spectacular service. The 12% tip I left today was an absolute gift. I had always had pretty neutral feelings about this place. I neither sought it out nor avoided it, going there only when it was suggested by friends. I found myself there today as a result of one of New Haven's many unexpected and frequent road closures which prevented me from reaching my original destination. The food arrived very quickly, was prepared well, and the portion was a good size. It was followed almost immediately by the check, which the server informed me she was leaving on the table and Theresa was there if I needed anything. Before I could even swallow she had vanished. Excuse me? Okay. Whatever. Maybe Theresa will be more attentive. I couldn't tell you who Theresa is if my life depended on it but my guess is that she is 1 of the 2 women who repeatedly ignored me on the way to tend to other customers and then stationed themselves behind the counter to chat. Here is a hint: customers don't like having to bring their empty glass to the counter to ask for a refill. They prefer a simple "is everything okay?" or "can I get you anything?" and an acknowledgement that the booth is occupied by a living, breathing, human being. When I was ready to leave, I approached the counter to pay and, once again, was ignored by the 2 men who were engaged in conversation. Only after I excused myself and interrupted them was I acknowledged. Shortly thereafter someone emerged from the kitchen (I think he may have been the owner or manager) and greeted me in a friendly manner. Unfortunately, by this point it was too late. My opinion was formed. My friends want to go there for breakfast on Sunday morning. I think I will be busy. read more

Love this diner. Great food, great prices, great portions. They lose a star for the one item that totally disappointed me in the 5 years we have been going...the chicken quesadilla. It literally had a tiny piece of chicken per triangle and a sprinkling of cheese for I think $7. Awful. I should have complained and returned it, but every other meal we have had there has been so good I was going to chalk this up to a bad day for the chef. I pray they don't make it like this everyday or maybe I am the only person who orders mexican fare at a mom and pop diner!!! It truly was THE WORST quesadilla I have ever eaten. Me and my husband order for the first time here tonight and we were blown away with how good the food was. The soup had a lot of flavor and was homemade which was a plus. The sampler appetizer was outstanding. The buffalo wings are one of my top favorites I have eating. The western burger is what my husband got which he enjoyed very much especially because the bbq sauce wasnt sweet. I got the American burger which was very good as well. Definitely will order/go here again. This is our new favorite diner by far. read more

I go to elm diner quite often and I was rather upset at what happened today. My financè, who is in the first couple months of pregnancy has been having an issue with blood sugar so she went to Krausers to get an orange and they didn't have any. We ran over to Elm diner knowing they have about 100 oranges on the counter for their disgustingly overpriced orange juice that they sell. She asked to BUY an orange or two and they would not sell one and she received a bad attitude from all the miserable waitresses working there. I have never complained about there OVERPRICED subpar breakfast, or the poor staff, needless to say I will not be returning. read more

We go here a lot for breakfast, some of the best pancakes ever and at a reasonable price. The owner's now know our faces and always come and say hello. The only down side to this restaurant is that they do not have wifi. It would be nice to have because we are students and would like to bring our laptop for a while. I give this place 3 stars due to the service saving it. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. The food was a bad experience as was the manager. Our first time was tonight and I really wanted a steak and cheese sandwich and I've heard good things about this place. So we came. It's a little run down and quirky but the staff so far was great. We ordered and my steak and cheese sandwich had a metallic taste to it. It had lettuce and tomato a little mayo. It was very skimpy on the steak all on a hard roll. I wasn't quite sure on the metallic taste thinking maybe it's the tomato or the lettuce. Since there wasn't much meat the second half I took out the tomato and lettuce and took a bite. It was worse. I asked my husband to try. He was able to tell a big difference from his sandwich to mine. It really had a metallic taste. I called the server over and told her and she called her boss over who was a young lady in her 20's. I told her the same thing and that's why I took out the lettuce/tomato. Right away she tells me meat is delivered every 2 days because they sell them so much which that's fine, I get it. Things happen and sometimes cross contamination does. She took the sandwich off and charged me for fries that I didn't even eat because my stomach was so upset from the sandwich. I wouldn't have mind paying for my food if she didn't get so defensive and make it sound like I was making it up. At the register I paid for the food and handed her the money and she basically threw it back at me. This was our first time eating there and the experience was horrible due to the attitude of the manager. We won't be back. read more

Tonight was our first experience with Elm Diner tonight for dinner. Husband and I were astounded by the scale of the menu-huge and covers all areas of food. This made us a little nervous, thinking that the possibility of happening upon a needle in the menu haystack would be scarce, however we were pleasantly surprised. Husband had the chicken caesar wrap-his standby that he gets almost everywhere. He said this was very good, actually tasted like a chicken caesar salad, not just some caesar-ish dressing on chicken in a tortilla. I got the special french onion soup (loved) and the chicken tenders platter. My chicken tenders were very good, fresh, not overly fried or battered. On both of our plates we got steak fries, which were crispy and hot. Place was PACKED and we were in and out of there in 40 minutes, and never felt rushed. We will be back for the breakfast! Would probably not even notice this place tucked away in a strip mall but had a coupon and decided to try it. The place was very clean and the staff was very friendly and organized. The chili burger was great with a good amount of chili and bacon. Wife had the fish and chips and she said that the fish was as fresh as any high end seafood place. Prices were reasonable.
