Despite our waiter being grouchy this was a really nice breakfast experience. Coffee was delicious. My plate was very good. Loved seeing the interior of the retro diner. Came here with a friend who is local. I grew up on Long Island, so I definitely appreciate a good Greek diner, athis place was it. We came for a late lunch, so it wasn't too busy and we were quickly seated. Elizabeth was our server, and she was great, very attentive and I've never said this before in a review, but really pretty ( forgive my unprofessional comment). Anyway, my friend ordered her favorite here, banana pecan pancakes. They looked amazing and the bite I had was amazing! I ordered the vegetarian platter because I couldn't decide on having just spanakopita. It was delicious, especially the dolmades ( stuffed grape leaves). The spanakopita was flakey and yummy, and I devoured the entire meal ( except for the onions). My husband got the chicken souvlaki and it too was delicious ( needed to get some more protein). We came to the Parthenon (Branford) for Father's Day - we've been coming to the Parthenon for over 20 years. It was very busy - not a problem. The waitress told us there would be a wait for our food - not a problem. As we're waiting for our food, we're watching table after table get their food - all people who arrived and were seated AFTER us. We ended up waiting a total of 75 minutes for our food. Our coffee went cold, no one refilled our water in the meantime. And when the food came? Our order was wrong & we just had to have it because we had waited so long already. Once we finished eating, we had to wait another 20 minutes for our bill. Spent 2+ hours at the Parthenon and couldn't even get our coffees comped. Myself and 2 family members pulled up to this diner at approximately 10:20 PM. We get to the front door, walk in, and are told "WE'RE CLOSED" by a very rude waitress who allowed 2 guys into the diner. We were dismissed in an incredibly disrespectful manner with ZERO explanation, other than being that "maintenance" done - which there was ZERO evidence of! Why keep your doors unlocked if you are just gonna turn away people!? I personally think they didn't want anymore patrons coming in. Sounds to me like they do NOT care about anyone but THEMSELVES! What a great experience. It's a busy Sunday morning and it's packed, but our host seated us promptly and our server was a wonderful and gracious woman with great sense of humor. The extensive menu made it difficult to choose but a Tito's bloody Mary got us on the road to eggs Benedict and a.Jess bowl, filled with brown rice, avocado, tomato and a couple of poached (to perfection) eggs. We love trying new diners when we travel, and this one came up short all the way around. Service was adequate at best. We sat at a small booth at the end of the bar and to make the atmosphere especially annoying, the manager (Or owner, maybe) sat at the seat that had him right above my head speaking to one of the staff behind the bar loudly even though the whole bar was empty. Inconsiderate at best. My wife had the meatball park sandwich and stopped after two bites. My French onion soup was mediocre. Cheesy and hot, but the broth was low on flavor, even onion flavor. A very nice diner with a full bar. We were greeted right away, and taken to our booth. Our server was a little aggressive with the way he spoke to us, but he was like that even with his regulars. He didn't make eye contact at any point. I had probably what I consider the best corned beef hash in all of CT! Perfectly seasoned, and crispy! The one thing about the diners here in CT, is that they give a LOT of food! Throughout our meal our server redeemed himself as I listened to him interact with his other customers. They must really like him there. He even started to be friendly with us. That is ... until the end ... I would have left 5 stars, but I took one away when he reached over my food (I was still picking at it) to grab his tip. You never reach over to grab your tip. So! This is my very first diner review....Get Excited!! (??) The reason is that I OWN a diner. I'm the (only) cook at my diner. And I am, shall we say, particular, about how diner food is done at my place. But also? Because I spent A LOT, A LOT of my time working/living/eating in a diner I don't tend to seek a diner out in my "down time." But I was down in CT visiting my parents and Dad wanted pancakes so we went to The Parthenon Diner. First Off: I LOVE a Greek Diner. No. Really. I get DOWN with that crazy*** approach to dining: ALL THE THINGS YOU MIGHT EVER CONCEIVABLY WANT ON ONE MENU!!! Greek Diner is my personal kind of twisted. Also? The Parthenon Diner is BEAUTIFUL. It is a STUNNINGLY GORGEOUS retro kind of diner inside. With comfy booths and chrome and all the fun stuff. So I give marks for that. FABULOUS decor. FABULOUS setting. Music they're piping in is pure trash. No. Really. Like wtf. EVERY server was fantastic! Excellent vibes. Good service. Which is weird because the guy who I assume is the owner (or one of the owners...) is at the front guarding all the liquor and the espresso machine (???) and EVERYONE has to go to this middle aged dude to pay. Only HE is allowed to cash anyone out. So let me just take this moment to say: Any restaurant that operates like this?? HOSTILE WORKPLACE. I don't know who this dude is, but he needs to STEP AWAY. He does NOT belong in the food service industry. And here is why: he doesn't trust anyone who works for him and treats them like they're all fixing to rob him of something...who knows what....; (B) he appears to be INCREDIBLY unhappy. Never cracks a smile. It's a bad look/vibe. I would NEVER allow one of my people to act the way this guy does; (C) he is RUDE. As in he's ringing people out while also one the phone. Because maybe he thinks no one who works for him is capable of answering the phone?? Do NOT be on the phone while you are also supposedly serving me. But Dad did get so-called "real deal" and I kinda researched. I don't think it's real at all. Look. I am FROM Vermont. I OWN A VERMONT DINER. I buy gallons and gallons of actual Vermont Maple Syrup from a multi generation farm RIGHT IN MY OWN TOWN. The stuff being served here is NOT legit. Which probably doesn't matter to anyone but me... Corned Beef Hash: large portion, properly browned. Very bland. Menu claims "house made." As someone who spends DAYS making corned beef hash I do believe they cook up some corned briskets and then mix them with canned hash...very meh... However! Butternut Squash Hash?? OMG. Life changing. YES!!! I have a full vegan menu at my spot and I IWLL be stealing this idea (and, of course, tweaking it...). Acceptable Caesar Salad. REALLY GOOD fish tacos! Totally enjoyed them. And, in all honesty, I only ordered them to prove the point that they were better than the "trendy" (and really NOT GOOD AT ALL) Mexican spot we ate at the night before. Seriously though. Ok, kind of meh I stopped here for breakfast when driving home from NYC They had a decent sounding breakfast special, but it was ONLY for those dining in and I wanted to get back on the road So...I ordered two scrambled eggs with rye toast, home fries and a small coffee which came to around $15 with tip. I waited about 10 minutes and it was ready to go. Eggs were fine, potatoes were better than expected, the bacon smelled weird and the coffee was ok. I arrive this place around 10.45 am but wait for take my order very long . Finally I had order with my special breakfast come with a cup of coffee free. We used to stop here as we drove up and down Interstate 95. Parthenon was a comfortable option where we could stretch our legs and get a warm meal. I say "was" only because we do not make the drive nearly as often! One of my favorite choices is the Mediterranean platter - a healthy portion of various Mediterranean foods. It features solid feta, some great pita and standard, hummus, tzatziki, and roasted red pepper from a jar. There is a lot of seating, so we never worry about getting a table. I do have to sit away from the kitchen or I will inevitably end up staring at the TV. Also plenty of standard diner desserts to choose from. Parthenon is a solid diner choice. read more
