NOT PRACTICING COVID SAFETY GUIDELINES!!! We stopped here for lunch yesterday. When we arrived, the tables were definitely 6 feet apart, but as it got busier, the owner added more tables in between that were as close as you'd find inside the dining room. The following are the infractions I noticed. - no mask on the owner - it was in his shirt pocket; - no mask or gloves on the hostess; - no wiping down of the menus after each use; - mask but no gloves on our waitress; - no wiping down of the chair after customers left. Apparently, these owners thought greed was more important than the safety of their customers. To be sure I wasn't accusing them of something that had changed relative to the guidelines, I visited the website of the Department of Health. According to Executive Order 150 (2020) these are the current guidelines. * Disinfect all tables, chairs, and any other shared items (menus, condiments, pens) after each use; * Require all employees to wear face coverings, except where doing so would inhibit the individual'S health, and require employees to wear gloves when in contact with customers and when handing prepared foods or serving food, utensils, and other items to customers; * Provide all employees with face coverings and gloves; The reason I gave this establishment two stars is because the food was decent, but that doesn't compensate for their failure to follow the guidelines for COVID. And no, we won't be going back. read more

I've only gotten food here twice but I was very happy both times. I ordered over the phone to pick up and both times the person who took my order was very friendly and accommodating. I had a pretty decent sized order for 4 people and I ordered close to closing which I never do! I've worked at all types of establishments and I know how much it sucks to have people come in right near the end of the night when all you want to do is go home. But regardless of my bad timing the staff was very friendly and we even got to speak with the owner who rang our order up. He was extremely nice and I apologized for ordering late and he insisted it was ok and that they are always happy to serve anyone at anytime. Since we didn't dine in I didn't get a great view of the whole place but from what I saw it was clean and had your typical diner vibe. They also had a big selection of deserts which looked and tasted amazing. The food portions were huge! Everything we ordered was in the bag, packaged neatly and securely. I mention securely because I've had food delivered plenty of times where the food was a mess. Dumped out, spilled over, leaked thru the bag etc. So I def appreciate it being packed well. Food was awesome, everyone was happy and I will definitely be returning in the future. read more

I hadn't been to Elmer Diner since the new ownership and I left there really disappointed this morning. I went after I got done a long night at work and ordered a hot tea and a Belgian waffle with chocolate ice cream. The waitress came back several minutes later and said they were out of chocolate ice cream. That's the only flavor I eat, but no problem...I can order a different entree. She wouldn't let me because the waffle had already been made. So I had to buy a meal I didn't want because they were out of something and didn't check first. I live in town and I wish this was a better option. I'm so annoyed that I doubt I'll ever go back. read more

I was in this small NJ town for business and was in need of some breakfast before starting my day. I stopped at the Elmer diner because most diners have good breakfast. The person who sat me was very "matter-of-fact". No good morning, no how are you, just sat me down at the table near the front door and plopped down the menu. (Turns out that she is one of the owners!) My waitress was friendly and the service was fast. The breakfast was blah. I ordered a bacon and cheddar omelette with egg whites. The omelette was dry and over cooked. The hash browned potatoes were also dry and tasted old. The toast was barely toasted. The best part of the breakfast was the grits. They were thick and fresh. I ordered an iced coffee because it was listed on the menu. Really, this was just hot coffee poured over ice that melted in two seconds. Keep driving and look for something better. Cashier girl was AWFUL!! Sooo many unhappy customers waiting to cash out!!! Time management class would help her. Food was COLD!!!!! Waited 10 minutes for coffee! I had to collect spenda because it took forever to even get her attention. Waitress did apologize for the coffee. But come on do your your job and do it right. Will not come back. Stuffed flounder and crab cakes are good. So is Chicken Parm. Cheese ravioli was skimpy. Nice atmosphere. Prices are good. Huge menu; lots of options and specials. Standard, Diner quality breakfasts. Mini-meals are adequate. Baby Back ribs are not good; don't waste your money! Chocolate pudding is good. read more

First off the service was outstanding. Cathy our waitresses did a fantastic job. The food was out quick and hot. We both ordered a special which included salad, soup, 2 sides and dessert for 13.99. I had the ham, which was huge and very good, my wife had penne with vodka sauce with chicken. We both had the split pea soup which we both liked. The only negative was the pickled beats, I like them with more vinegar. Both of us needed boxes for the extra food we could NOT finish. There are plenty of selections, and plenty of desserts. I was really shocked to see there is only one review for the Elmer DIner, and it is poor. I really love the Elmer Diner for as it has all the things I want to eat and I really enjoy their specials. They make a great mac-and-cheese. The prices are extremely reasonable. You can get a whole cheesesteak lunch set for about 7.95. They also have those light, crispy kind of diner fries which I just love. I admit breakfast can be lackluster here, but the lunch specials are great. Come here for a good lunch! read more

Typical diner menu, but amazing food.. I travel to this diner for the CRAB SOUP alone and buy a quart to take home. It is Outstanding: thick, big lumps of crab, and the roasted red peppers give it a unique flavor. Best creamy crab soup I have ever had. The Elmer Diner has always been a place I enjoyed going to for any meal of the day. Recently it has undergone new management and the Diner is better than ever. The new owner is a gracious quiet man who gently looks over his staff and customers. He has kept the servers and kitchen staff with the addition of a Chef. The food is even better! I enjoyed a Scallop and Shrimp Fettucini, the seafood was cooked perfect as well as the pasta. The sauce was perfectly light and seasoned, in addition to the seafood there was just the right amount of sundried tomatoes and spinach. Breakfast is always good, especially the golden brown crispy home fries. For only $2.99 you can enjoy 3 eggs with homefries and toast, my personnel favorite. For lunch try the Patty Melt or any of the delicious sandwiches. The Elmer Diner is my happy space. Check it out! read more

I grab a trailer full of Florida bound meats and cheeses not far from here and just happened to follow a few Texas bound trucks into the lot late on a Saturday evening back in early February. SHAME ON ME...Been rolling by here once a week and never slowed down to notice it. Now I couldn't pass it up if I tried. Tons of great food. The meat loaf was more than a plate full. Burgers are top notch. Club sandwich is awesome. Staff is always friendly and quick to get your order going. Call ahead if you just want to grab it and keep on truckin'. When you pull in, loop all the way around behind the building to the truck parking on the side. Plenty of room for several semis with 53' trailers to park and pull straight out when your belly's full. Every truck stop eatery on the interstate needs to model themselves after the Elmer Diner...If not, then your just cheating your customers, because this is exactly what truckers are looking for!! I got home and the food was disgusting so I called to complain and he belittled me and hung up on me what kind of business doesn't care about their customers and their employees he hung up on me twice when I called back I do not recommend it read more

We had just driven up from Florida and ate seafood in FL, BBQ in SC and NC and seafood in Maryland. Best meal of the 5 day trip, Yep the Elmer Diner/Restaurant!! Had fresh broiled Flounder, Fresh salads and Beet's and Sweet potato fries. Everything was very good and reasonably priced as well. Our server Shannon was training a new waiter and the 2 of them were both spot on as well. 5 stars for Elmer diner!! read more

The only thing saving this place is the service. After a spooky night at creamy acres, we had a group of 7 at about 9:30pm. Our food took over an hr to come out to us. We were the only ones in the place. Not a single one of us finished our meal. 2 meals completely removed from the check. The soup was good, but not enough for me to ever go back. read more

I remember coming to this diner a few years ago with my wife and father in law. We were pleasantly surprised to find a nice diner in a small town off route 40 in Jersey. We have been trying to find this place again for years and we finally found it! We were so excited because we remembered their great selection of desserts and good food. We were thoroughly disappointed for this follow up visit. The food was horrendous and the diner smelled like cigarettes. I was appalled by what they called an attempt at a burger and sent my food back. I had some of my wife's meatloaf and that was barely edible. The food was so poor that my kids wouldn't eat their meals and they generally eat everything. I won't even look at this place when we drive by it anymore. I would recommend you steer clear of this place. It was border line cafeteria/hospital quality. read more

Typical diner food. Nothing too special. I MIGHT give it a try when I am driving through on Route 40 again but there were other options I'll try first. Food was okay but the waitress was not friendly at all...like when you point out someone at the table needs silverware (and I am polite)... no response... not a syllable, no smile, just walk to the back, get some silverware and put it on our table... that's cool, its a free country... but I expect more. read more

A stop on the way from Philly to Cape May at the midway point. This trip, a two for $20 dinner special was offered, with a large cross section of entrees offered. My husband ordered the chicken piccante, and I had the 8 oz sirloin. Served with an appetizer, soup or salad, and the entree with 2 veggies,the portion was generous and we wound up taking half our dinner entrees home. The food was good,hot, prompt and appreciated. Service was attentive and professional. We enjoyed our meal, as usual and will return. read more

Today is not the first time we've stopped at the Elmer Diner, but it is the first time I'm leaving a review. Let's start with the friendly welcome from Debbie and the fun 60's music playing in the background. My husband and I both ordered the turkey club that came with fries, Coke slaw and a cup of chicken with shell pasta soup. The soup is homemade and tasted like mine and I do make good soup! The club was perfect...not too much mayo, bacon crispy and the turkey was very fresh. The fries were exactly what you'd expect from a diner--perfectly browned and not soggy! So, lunch was great, but we've had breakfasts that were also great. If I have one criticism it would be that the menu is just too extensive. I think they could probably eliminate 3 of the 6 pages and still please everyone. We will be back!! read more

Not what it used to be. Food is so-so - veggies warmed over canned stuff. The night we visited we had a coupon for 'buy one, get one (of lesser value) Free'. Well, in the past this meant you'd buy one meal and get another free. What happened is we both ordered the same meal, but one had iced tea (and the other water). Should have been a free meal but guess what?? When we checked out they TOOK OFF THE COST OF THE ICED TEA. When it was questioned, we were told 'well, the waitress already took off 10%. (umm maybe, but the coupon said buy one, get one, not 10% off!). Addition of the hideous flashing lights and the crazy unreadable scrolling sign has done nothing for this diner. there's much better a short way down 40 so keep going! read more

We had been customers there for the past several months. Today we experienced a terrible pricing policy. We arrived there at approximately 11:10 AM. We ordered our usual breakfast, one we have ordered several times these fast few months. But this time the bill was twice what we had ever paid before. Seems the "computer" doubles the price for breakfast after a certain time. You would think that always having the same waitress it would behoove her to tell that we would need to pay twice the price for our usual breakfast. We always left an appropriate tip and had even made the place our Thursday night dinner place. Never again! Customers vote with their feet. read more
