The food is okay here, nothing special. The curry chicken juicy and flavorful but more veggies than chicken. The pork fried rice is good. The cashew chicken good. The Wor wonton soup had a thin broth but the wontons, chicken and shrimp were good. I am not a fan of their potstickers. They are far too doughy for me; it overshadows the filling. My boyfriend and I dined here on a quiet Sunday night. We are both born and raised in SF so we know good Chinese food. We were sad to learn Ping's closed but were hopeful that this place would be a good replacement from the menu and reviews. We were so happy to discover that it is actually an improvement on Ping's in terms of portions, quality, and ambiance. We ordered the Westlake Beef Soup which very few Chinese restaurants outside of SF are able to do well and were impressed by how wholesome and substantial it was. Highly recommend if you've never tried Westlake soup. Then we ordered our favorite dish Beef Chow Fun. Often when chow fun is done wrong, it is too greasy but this was not greasy at all. The noodles were not overly seasoned and the portion was huge with plenty of beef. Must order! Finally we ordered the Black Bean Prawns which had a ton of shrimp and perfectly cooked veggies in a savory bold sauce. Could easily be three meals worth! This is our new favorite Chinese restaurant in Marin! We plan to come back regularly and highly recommend you come by yourself. You will be satisfied! read more

Terrible food (period)! I tried it based on the great rating and reviews but was severely disappointed. Just tasted the food I got from there and every dish was terrible. Harmony, which for whatever reason gets a lower rating, has much superior food and higher quality ingredients. Mamahuhu while not as good as before and with no Chinese chefs in their Marin location, still prepares better food. What a waste of driving time, calories and money. I've eaten at Emma's 3 times now, eat in, take out and delivery and each time has been great. I've tried the princess chicken, fried rice, chow fun, green beans,, calamari, eggplant, a tofu vegetable dish and a few more. Everything has been delicious, well prepared and of high quality. I had the Chow fun - and it was as good as the city(SF) I have eaten here before and I remember it being good and pretty generous portions, but can't remember what I ordered. It's a little confusing that it is NOT a part of the Ping's chain. We moved to Marin upon retirement some years ago. Love the area (of course), the climate, the fresh food and scenic beauty. So, what does his have to do with a restaurant review? First, I'd lived, and dined, in a number of cities with good to excellent Chinese cuisine and, secondly, I discovered we'd have to go in to San Francisco to find decent Chinese food, which is a hassle. Sure, there were a couple of Ping's nearby, but that was just a couple rungs above Panda Express. But takeout from Ping's was the best San Rafael had to offer when jonesing for Chinese. Then this particular Ping's changed hands and Wayne took over. The first clue was that the stale old decor brightened up, prompting me to consider dining in for the first time as I picked up our usual take-out. Some minutes later, as the delicious aromas wafted through our kitchen, couldn't help sampling while I served up our plates. Oh, yes! We definitely were going to skip takeout in the future so we could get this fresh and hot from the restaurant's own kitchen. Then I looked again on line at the menu--the old reliables were there, but some new dishes that seemed to focus on the amazing produce we're so blessed with here. Nice! Since we first tried Emma's a year ago, we taken friends and business associates there and they have all raved about Emma's. We go there about once a week. I wish they had family dinners and another choice for soup at lunch, the hot and sour is very hot. Wishing Emma's continued success. read more

I'm so glad Ping's switched ownership and became Emma's. Such an improvement in the quality of the food and at very reasonable prices too! My husband and I shared potstickers, basil garlic eggplant, and Mongolian beef. This was the second time I tried Emma's potstickers and they were just as perfect as the first time I tried them. I highly recommend them: they are full of filling and are not gooey as some undercooked potstickers are. Emma's menu says they are taking an updated approach to Chinese cooking, featuring both traditional Chinese food as well as Northern California influenced selections with seasonal vegetables and new creations. I tried the basil garlic eggplant and found it not only delicious to eat, but also beautiful to look at because of the beautiful colors. My least favorite dish of the night was the Mongolian beef, which was too chewy, with an under-spiced sauce. When the restaurant was under Ping himself, this was a signature dish with a bit of spice and good meat. That was at least 15 yeas ago I'm guessing. The Ping's owners prior to Emma's were also unable to match the original Ping's version of Mongolian beef. Sadly, Ping's in general really went downhill after Ping left. Emma's is showing great promise with her contemporary, updated approach. Perhaps it is time to give up on Mongolian beef and instead celebrate all the delicious updated offerings Emma's has planned for the months ahead. I hope Emma takes credit for her contemporary approach by putting her name on the sign outside. read more

Interesting to see mixed reviews. I've been here twice and both times were not bad, it wasn't mind blowing but I would come back. I wouldn't say mine was tasteless at all- sounds like someone had a fluke. The first time I came with my huge family (grandparents, siblings, cousins etc.) the first weekend they opened and they were very gracious with us. The food was decent and some was very enjoyable. Being a biz owner myself I'm patient with a learning curve. You basically have to be a horrible person to get a 1-star review. I see the owner is responding to reviews and making efforts to correct mistakes, so I don't know, I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. If you want some decent Chinese food with really sweet staff, give it a shot! The lunch special is a great deal. read more

I stopped in and ordered the Hunan Beef and Emma's Fried Rice (beef) the presentation was beautiful, lots of beef (Hunan) but also green peppers, red peppers, yellow onion, purple onion, chili pepper, mushrooms. We try to branch out with our protein and get items we haven't tried before and have never been disappointed. We've always done take out, but the service is fast and friendly when we pick up. I received a recommendation for Ping's Mandarin Restaurant and drove to where Apple Maps directed me so I could pick up a takeout order. I drove around the parking lot trying to see if maybe the address was incorrect because there was a place called Emma's Restaurant in Pings's place so I looked for Ping's phone number on Yelp, contacted them and Emma's Restaurant is where the call went to. I know my friend had called for a takeout order so I entered and it was a nice quiet restaurant, right off the freeway with friendly servers. I asked for the order and sure enough, they had it. When I brought the order back to dig into my chicken lettuce wrap, I noticed that they were mindful enough to bag the lettuce separately which would have otherwise resulted in soggy lettuce and a mess on my hands. Needless to say, the lettuce wrap was delicious and I did appreciate the attention to detail so I will return to this restaurant. read more

I think this is the best Chinese food in Marin. The quality of the chicken and tofu is excellent. I have ordered delivery a dozen or more times since we moved here and I'm very picky with the food we buy from restaurants. To be honest there is not a lot of options and Emma's rates the highest. We order here once a week. I really enjoy the snow peas and chicken. As well as the chicken corn soup. The vegetables with tofu is a great option for the vegetarian in our family. We have also enjoyed the beef chow fun. The fried sesame balls are small bite sized and plentiful to share as an appetizer. I would rather pay more for good quality food. After 15+ years of living in Marin, we've finally found our spot for Chinese food! I am picky about Chinese food. My dad is an excellent Cantonese cook, and I ate in Vancouver and Hong Kong growing up and also lived in SF for many years, so that's my standard for comparison. To be fair, it's kind of a tough standard, but I would be happy for anything that isn't too greasy or swimming in goopy cornstarch sauce and has good wok flavor. Emma's ticks all those boxes and more. I've been twice since discovering it by word of mouth (my hairdresser had another Asian client who told me about Emma's when I was bemoaning having to drive to Daly City to eat at Koi Palace). Emma's is kind of hidden in a strip mall next to the 101. It used to be Ping's (which I'd been to once long ago and never went back), and the interior is a bit dark but pleasant enough to stay and dine. I've dined in and taken out, and both experiences were great. The service was warm, friendly, and efficient. As for the food, I would say Emma's menu is definitely Chinese American/ Californian style but done well. Everything we've tried so far--mongolian beef, princess chicken, kung pao chicken, deluxe vegetable with prawns, beef chow fun, mu shu, sweet and sour soup, sesame balls--has been delicious. The standout for me is probably the beef chow fun (as good as what you'd get at a lot of restaurants in the city), but all the dishes were flavorful without being greasy or smothered in goopy sauce. For my taste, the seasoning is just right. The ingredients are fresh and plentiful; I loved that the deluxe vegetables with prawns included wood-ear mushrooms, bok choy, and snow peas. The portions are beyond generous and really an amazing value in Marin. We're so happy to add Emma's to our restaurant rotation. We look forward to going back and trying more items soon! read more

We ordered several party trays for a family get together over the weekend. The food was delicious. Pork Pot Stickers, Orange Chicken, Basil Garlic Eggplant, Trio of Mushrooms with Tofu, Chicken Chow Fun and String Bean Chicken. We ordered small trays, enough for 8 to 10 people. The trays were huge; the servings very generous. The folks at the restaurant were very friendly and very helpful. The trays were ready to go when promised. It was a great experience. I have had a fair bit of bad Chinese food over the years -- greasy, overloaded with MSG, etc. But never have I had bad Chinese food that was *utterly without taste.* We bought $90 worth of food to taste a variety of dishes and every single one was tasteless. Nothing was seasoned and there were no spices that we could discern. No salt. No pepper. No soy. NOTHING. The dishes were to a one catastrophically bland. We couldn't even eat the potstickers - golf balls of watery, tasteless meat surrounded by chewy tasteless dough. I feel awful saying this, but we threw everything away and ordered a pizza. There was Emma's, a restaurant I remembered received a very nice review in the Marin Independent Journal earlier in the year. Decided on the Beef Chow Mein and the Mongolian Beef. The food arrived quickly, nice and hot, in generous portions. Both dishes were excellent: delicious, fresh, oh so tender, just yummy. The gentleman at the desk was very nice and helpful. My order was quick. The Wor Wonton soup is wonderful. I'm eating leftovers right now, so filling. Full of veggies and meat, big wonton, the broth is flavorful. Also had the Curry Chicken, this was excellent as well. Large portion, enough for 3 servings. The chow mein was rather plain and not much flavor besides soy sauce. The three mushroom beef dish was only two kinds of mushrooms and uninteresting in flavor and VERY salty.
