The restaurant is in a stand-alone building and looks sketchy on the outside but it's nice on the inside. Without a reservation, we were immediately seated for dinner on a Tuesday night. The service was prompt. We ordered the half duck which came with buns, vegetable chow mein, and the dim sum sampler. The dim sum sampler was ok, I've definitely had better dim sum. If I had to rank them from best to worst, I would say the shu Mai, shrimp har gow, mushroom, and then the last two were tied. The duck was really good. There were lots of meaty pieces, the skin was crispy, the buns were soft, and the sauce added even more to the dish. The chow mein was also just ok. The noodles were pretty thick. There was a big party that was there when we got there, so at 8pm all the dessert was sold out. So sad. read more

We had a flat tire on our travel trailer while driving through Napa, so we went to Big O, which is around the corner from Empress M. We ordered some food while waiting for our tire to be fixed. We weren't dressed up at all, but they treated us most courteously. We sat in the bar area and had some really delicious food...dim sum for me and kung Pao shrimp for my husband. It's very rare that I complain about a restaurant, especially on Yelp.. But my experience here was so poor that I felt obligated. Since the day I moved to Napa, I've been told that Empress M is incredible, so I've been looking forward to visiting for dinner. We didn't make it past the Dim Sum we ordered as appetizers before we decided to wrap up our visit and go somewhere else to satisfy our hunger. The Dim Sum was sub par at best, the cocktail our friend ordered was pure sugar, and the calamari was by far the worst thing I've ever been served in my entire life. The Dan Dan noodles were like, meh... I've never known a Chinese restaurant to mess up Dan Dan noodles, but Empress M somehow managed. The Calamari was just awful, it was like they rolled it in a bucket of salt, deep fried it, and then rolled it in some more salt. To say I felt like I took a face-dive into a Bolivian Salt Flat would be an understatement. Seeing our disappointment, the waiter was quick to come over and offer us a discounted check, as well as an offer for some free Dim Sum if we decide to return. I can say that no one in my group will be returning to Empress M any time soon. read more

Wow! We were so excited to see that a new Chinese restaurant with serious potential had opened in our home town of Napa. So today we have it a try for lunch. Indoor dining just resumed in Napa this past week, but we elected to sit on the outdoor patio as it was a lovely spring day. The patio was a lovely spot despite backing up to Silverado trail. The traffic noise was moderate, but not offensive with the traditional Chinese music at just the right volume in the speakers and the fountain was lovely and provided a nice white noise as well. We had a very nice and attentive waiter, Amin, who made some nice recommendations. We selected the shumai, pea shoot dumplings, taro puffs, string beans and the Lanzhou spicy rib eye beef. Service from others was mixed. The one Asian woman who delivered several dishes was cold and needs retraining or a new line of work. She did not speak a word as she delivered each dish. Not ideal for this level restaurant. Others were better. Especially Amin. For the food, all very good and far better than anything else in the wine country area. Most was pretty authentic and good quality ingredients. A few small issues that should be improved to bring this pace to where it is trying to be. Green beans were perfectly seasoned and cooked, but several did not have the strings removed or even the stems. Not good. The pea shoot dumplings we delicious, but the filling left a little bit of a pasty feel. Maybe too much cornstarch as binder?? The worst offense was the rib eye. Delicious flavor, but the meat was not well trimmed and too tough either due to overcooking or, I expect, not the quality cut it should be at this price point -$36. Everything else was delicious and we are excited to go back again. We offer these only as constructive critiques as we very much want this restaurant to succeed and improve. Best Food and Service in town! This has got to be the only restaurant in the area that can offer both great service and delicious food. Every item we ordered was packed with flavor, not greasy /oily, perfectly cooked, comes out warm and you can just absolutely taste the freshness in their ingredients. The staff is extremely accommodating. When we asked to sit where the bar is so we can watch the game they took us there without even thinking too much about it. The service was impressive, we had a waiter who memorized our order - no writing required and it all came out without a hitch. You figure most restaurants type it in on an iPad or write it down and they can still screw up your order. The entire staff was extremely friendly with not just our party but with everyone who came in. They offer outdoor, indoor and bar area seating. They have ample parking surrounding the restaurant. I was surprised to find a Chinese restaurant in Napa. With me being a huge fan of Chinese food, this was a must during our weekend stay in Napa. I saw the reviews were pretty good, so why not. There's a small parking lot in the back. The place is dimly lit, and very traditional Chinese decorations, art everywhere. There's seating outside with heaters, inside or at the bar. The bar has a huge projector, so we chose to sat there. First thing I noticed was the entire staff wasn't Chinese. Uh oh. However, our waitress informed us they can't make too many changes to each item on the menu because the cooks are all Chinese so there's a language bridge. Hearing that, I said to myself, good, Chinese food cooked by Chinese cooks. I didn't have too high expectations walking in tbh. It's Napa. However, I was fairly surprised by the food. Compared to most Chinese restaurants, the menu is fairly simple and small. There's not a lot of dishes to select from, however to me, that's a great thing because they can specialize and perfect the few things they do have on the menu. With that being said, the food was delicious! We ordered the sui mai, taro dumpling, beef chow fun, hot and sour soup, and the spicy fish filet. It was fairly big portions, as it should be. The sui mai and taro dumplings were good, nice and large pieces. They have a small menu for dim sum so it was nice to have a few during dinner time. The beef chow was delicious. One of the signature dishes for Chinese food. It came out hot, has the wok flame flavor, and tasted amazing. The spicy fish was szechuan style, lots of pepper, so be careful. The fish was tender and soft, flavored. It went really well with white rice. The staff were friendly and attentive. Food came out very fast, which I'll never complain about. Overall, I was amazed at the quality and taste of the food. I definitely will come back and recommend Empress M for all your Chinese food cravings! read more

Totally Delicious!!! I've been DYING for good Chinese in napa and empress M answered my prayers. Went here on Valentine's Day it was great and quick service. Our server was lovely and the owner was very welcoming. The tea they served with the meal was delicious and I loved the BBQ buns and pot stickers. I can't wait to eat inside here, from what I saw, it was beautiful. Even though it was cold outside and a little rainy, we were warm and dry thanks to heaters and covered seating. Hidden secret of Napa Valley. I wouldn't expect good Chinese food in the area. The building itself is a bid weird and can easily be missed. Food- We ordered one of everything on the Dim Sum page. All the items were good and typical. The place also offers Banana Cream pie which is not your usual asian item which was surprisingly good. Ended up ordering a full pie. The beef chow fun and the chow mein were pretty good as it wasn't drenched in oil. Price- The dim sum was reasonable price for the area however the other items such as the sea bass and chow fun was bit more than your typical Chinese restaurant. Service- The service is very attentive and they provide us with all the sauce needed. They cleared the plates when finished and refilled our water when our glass was empty. My fiancée and I had Empress M for takeout, and we really enjoyed it. We had the Pineapple pork, Peking duck, walnut shrimp, and sesame balls. The takeout process was extremely smooth though the parking lot can get pretty full. Also, it was very quick to place the order over the phone. Pineapple pork - 5/5 I would absolutely have this again. It was so delicious and flavorful with a hint of spice. The pork was extremely tender. Peking duck - 4/5 This was my first time having Peking duck, and I enjoyed it but think having it fresh in the restaurant would be better. It came with bao buns, and I enjoyed that but the buns did over power the duck a little bit. Walnut shrimp - 5/5 So crispy. Loved the texture. The sweetness to go along with walnuts is still making me think about it the next day. Sesame balls - 4/5 These were delicious! My only note is that there are 3 pieces for $8, which is pretty pricey for sesame balls. Overall enjoyed the experience and would go back. We've been eating at Empress M since we moved to Napa 3 years ago. While it's the best Chinese food in Napa (which isn't saying much). I will not be going back after our experience tonight. I am still in shock that a chicken fried rice, beef and noodles and a hot and sour soup came to $72. $72! A hot and sour soup at Empress M is $18. I don't care how bad Bidenflation gets. That amount of money for a normal size soup is just unheard of. Aside from the soup the fried rice checks in at $22. Again that just doesn't add up Rice, egg and a few pieces of chicken. I understand we are operating in tough times, but this is highway robbery on their part. If you read this review, skip Chinese for the night and go eat at some of the other countless gems here in Napa. read more

Perfect ratio of alcohol and tasty-ness Dumplings: Pork buns were phenomenal, better than the usual hole in the wall Chinese bakery I go to in SF for breakfast. Easy to split the two that come in the menu item since they pull apart very nicely. Shumai-not an item everyone likes, if you don't love dumplings this flavor won't be for you-were really good! Was pleasantly surprised how authentic they were while still hitting an American palette. Soup dumplings were delicious. No words. Sides: Had veggie fried rice and chicken chow mien. Both were tasty while not being overly oily. Both drinks were great to cut the oil. Entrees: the duck came with bao buns so you can make lil "tacos" with cucumbers, duck and sauce. Hella good. Short ribs were a bit fatty but the sauce was again, just hella good. Ambiance: This place is stunning, and wait staff is so sweet. Owner stopped by for a quick hello to ask how things were. Ordered a few dishes here, chow fun noodle, potsticker, and Dan Dan noodles. All of them were lackluster and poor quality for the price. Restaurant is about 2x as expensive as it has any right to be and the food is no better than Panda Express. The chow fun noodles were over cooked, the Dan Dan noodle was basically top ramen noodle overcooked with some gravy on top. Napa continues its struggle of having any good Chinese restaurants. At first, we were "kinda" of hesitate, not knowing how good this Chinese restaurant is but we decided to give it a try. OMG! Surprisingly, they were authentic Chinese food. OMG!!! My new happy spot. I have been living in wine country for over 10years and typically have to drive out to San Francisco for amazing dim sum. This place is legit. It has EVERYTHING you're used to seeing on a dimsum menu (Har Gow, Shuman, Pork Buns shrimp, spare ribs, chicken feet, taro) PLUS FRESH VEGETABLES STEAMED DIM SUM!!! YESSSSS! ( Snow pea shoots, mushroom, spinach). They also offer small.llates and noodles - Sichuan calamari, wood ear mushroom salad, chow.mein, rice noodles in a clay pot, walnut shrimp, dan dan noodles, peeling duck soup and Mongolian lamb chops! For thr chops they even have wine pairing suggestions. Try the cab franc by TB which thry just added to the menu. Would definitely recommend and I have already been back 2 since my first meal! DO NOT EAT HERE if you have a shellfish allergy or are vegetarian/vegan. We ordered a dim sum item clearly marked with a red "V" for vegetarian on the menu and it had shrimp inside, at the bottom underneath all the veggies. What made me most upset was when we told a staff member, they said that yes they knew it came with shrimp and the dish is "technically pescatarian" and the "waiter should usually mention it." Our waiter didn't. Why do you have it marked vegetarian then? And why does it not say shrimp in the description of the dish?? It's potentially dangerous if someone were allergic as well. I don't trust this restaurant for misrepresenting an item on the menu & will not be returning here. read more
