To make a name for yourself in such a neighborhood as Bishop Arts, you will need some real flare in terms of vibe, grub, and other intangibles. For starters, they crank out empanadas right alongside an Acai bowl of granola, acai, honey, and berries. These empanadas come chock full of good ingredients, with pureed chickpeas (essentially very thick hummus) for a vegetarian option or a more traditional set of stuffing featuring beef and potato. Though small, the interior gives way to a quiet and work-friendly environment, pending your ability to obtain a seat. Teas and coffee abound here, and it provides quite the escape from the typical coffee shop norm, independent and franchise alike. I usually come here for dessert. My yoosh is the Romeo and Juliet (guava and cream cheese baked pastry good) with a cappuccino. They have ice cream too. What's great about this place is that you almost don't know it exists. Let me rephrase that. The Bishop Arts District is such it's own entity and carries it's own persona that without big signage or hip window displays a smaller shop like this can easily be forgotten about. That's until you go in. The room is small in size but has a quaint feeling and the original wood floors makes you immediately wonder what was there before...well, before legit coffee and empanadas. There is a seating area when you walk in immediately to the right with hip and vintage vibey couches. The menu at glance doesn't look terribly packed with options, but with a simple question I found out they can make mostly anything on the menu iced as well. They had an acai smoothie that made me second guess my iced americano. A-OK is a good way to sum it up. We had a decent experience here. The staff was prompt if not overly friendly, and the teas we ordered were just fine (given to us in to-go cups although we didn't ask for them that way). I think the thing that threw me off the most was the large flat screen television playing Jerry Maguire on TNT. Not usually something you see in an otherwise sort of cozy coffee shop. I'll probably be back, but not to sit and read or work--I'd need cozier seating and no TV. Hard to not like a place that greets you with an espresso size hot chocolate smothered in whip cream. Ordered a medium latte and a Chicken & cheese empanada($2.75). Latte was foamy perfection (2 shot 12oz $3.99). Asked for empanada to be heated. Empanada crust was delish but interior was cold. Stumbled across Espumoso the other day while waiting for friends, and popped inside to grab a regular cup of coffee. Espumoso knows how to craft a delicious cup of house coffee - it far exceeded my expectations, and is much better than all of the chain coffee shops, and even better than many of the other local coffee shops. Price is right too. Too bad this place is all the way in Bishop Arts, otherwise I would definitely go back more often! On top of that, great seating choices available - two couches, variety of tables/chairs, outdoor seating too; and, most importantly- free wifi. Will certainly be back soon! read more

Bishop Arts needs this place desperately; I was pretty shocked when the bookstore on the corner only offered drip coffee. Checked it out today, had some chai and some ice cream. Barrista added espresso shots to the chai, which was a new one for me. She cheerfully offered to remake it, and the second attempt was a success. Ambiance is pretty standard for a coffee shop, albeit a bit stripped down. Comfortable, one couch, a few tables, and room for more art. I could probably get some work done there, music was not too distracting. I'd like to see some outside seating but space is a bit limited. I think the place has potential and I hope it does well, because every neighborhood needs a proper coffee shop! read more

The arequipe (caramel and guava) and beef + potato empanadas are good but not amazing. The arequipe was too sweet for me, but I don't really have a sweet tooth. The iced latte I got was pretty good, but the acai bowl was just unsatisfying. It's too icy and doesn't taste like acai. I think they use mostly other fruit and just a bit of acai mixed with lots of ice. My friend really liked her java frappe though, so in all it's decent but not great. Plus, the wifi isn't reliable and there's no restroom so it's not ideal for hanging out or studying. read more

I am going to give the one star for the abysmal service over the weekend. The teen girls at the bar could not have acted like they wanted to be there. Taking orders while leaning on the counter, chatting amongst themselves. The enthusiasm just was nowhere to be found. I ordered a café con leche, not realizing it was laden with sugar and cinnamon (by definition in translation, it means coffee with milk). Ok, partly my fault, but in my defense, there are no description of the beverages. I am on a no sugar diet and despise cinnamon, so I returned to the shop and asked if it was supposed to be that way. With a click of her tongue and an eye roll, the girl at the counter replied, "Well... yeah!". Businesses make mistakes and customers make mistakes. Any decent business model would at least have some understanding and an apology. I mean, what if an allergy was a concern? The worst business model, however, is to treat your customers like idiots and with a 'too-bad' attitude. Very disappointed. Attitude, not product, ruined this one. read more

If you're in the Bishop Arts area its really close to all of the shops and restaurants so they have a great location. Espumoso is in the old Papa Danny's - and for those that remember, Suenos Sabrosos - location on Bishop. The coffee and espresso drinks are great. The music is very cool and Espumoso has a South American "Euro" feel. Surprisingly, they have empanadas on the menu; the beef and potato empanadas are awesome. The dark chocolate cups with passion fruit are amazing. I have yet to try the acai smoothies and the desserts, but I will definitely be back to try them. I have never been able to get service in here. IT is so strange. I wait and wait and wait. It is a matter of them taking drink orders then filling them before they wait on the next person in line. So if you are lucky enough to not have anyone in front of you so you can at the very least be acknowledged then awesome. Otherwise, you will be collecting dust like an Elf on a Shelf. The product is awesome I have been told and the prices seem reasonable. But they also use syrups instead of making in house. 2 girls just stand by the ice cream section and one person runs the coffee section. May be just me, but if that dude is struggling but can Barista like a boss, hop over and run the ccard for waiting customers and allow him to whip out drinks. Oh, Happy Days! Bishop Arts once again has a coffee shop, but not just a plain old coffee shop. Owner, Tony Fernandez, has opened Espumoso (I think it means "frothy" en espanol) with a decidedly latin fusion twist on the coffee shop genre. The space has a cool minimalist vibe and is very relaxing and inviting. Tony is about to add wi-fi which will make it the go to place for coffee! Espumoso has espresso, smoothies, empanadas, ice cream and fabulous deserts made by the owner's mother, Clara. I had a big piece of the tres leche cake last weekend and had the pleasure of meeting Clara and both are wonderful. The tres leche was moist, moist, moist and dense and coconutty and fantastic! She also makes the flan and poppy seed cake that I saw today and was tempted, but I tried something different. Today, I had a tiny little chocolate cup filled with passion fruit mousse. The mousse had a delicate taste and texture and mixed with the chocolate cup??? Luscious is all I can say. I have to confess that I have not tried the espressos yet (don't hate on me all you coffee drinkers) and I am sorry because if they are as good as the deserts, I'll be flying in the heavenly space that is Espumoso! read more

I LOVE "hole in the wall places", that's where its at my friends! My sister and I Recently discovered Espumoso in the Bishop Arts Dist. our expierence was a great one, the owners were very welcoming. Espumoso carries South American deserts such as Flan, Tres Leches; fruit Juices, smothies, and 3 types of empanadas among other tasty things. I ordered a yummy mango smoothie and a beef and potato empanada. I have seriously never tasted anything like it, it was so goood I took 3 more for the road. Hey guys, let me tell you a little story about a little gem in the Bishop Arts District. I'm a serious coffee fanatic. This is a real and authentic coffee shop. STARSUCKS does not compare to this cute cafe. I come here several times a week and I usually get the Cafe con Leche, which is an espresso drink infused with cinnamon or I get the Espumoso Frappe, which has a bit of Irish Cream and Caramel. During my most recent visit I had the an Acai Berry smoothie and it was ORGASMIC! Try the empanadas, they are the best I have ever had. Simply amazing! read more

I think I saw several workers there were two girls behind the ice cream and a guy trying to change the channel to the tv and yet not one can help me out . I know they saw me because they would look at me and smile and I was standing next to the guy changing the channel . Really poor service. Waited for ages and even after we asked it we could order we were ignored.

It was my first time here, and I really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately, they messed up my order. Forgot my girlfriend's empanada, then when I asked them about the empanada they told me I only ordered and paid for two. After making them look up the order, they realized they were wrong, but offered little to no apology. I had them print me off a copy of the receipt. The veggie empanada is literally hummus fried into an empanada. The beef empanada is decent. The coffee is good. Most likely will not return, though. Such a shame. read more

I love Espumoso! I work down the street and every now and then I'll stop by to grab an empanada before a shift. The first time I went, I wasn't too crazy about the Cafe con leche, but I decided that was more about me than about the coffee. The next time I went, I was taking a test for school online and grabbed a milkshake (frappe) and an empanada, which comes with salsa. The girls behind the bar were sweet and had recommendations. One of my favorite things is the variety of items. What other coffee shop has empanadas and acai bowls? Be warned that if you're looking for very scientific coffee and weighed and timed shots, this isn't it; go to Davis Street Espresso. This is the place for conversation and sweet and milky coffee. As I am sitting in Espumoso now taking a break from christmas shopping I have to ask myself why haven't I stopped in before. I have walked this neighborhood many times and only today have I stopped in. The espresso is good, the empanadas are great and the staff is nice. Great little coffee house. I love to see independent coffee shops, while I do visit the chains I much prefer places like this. The guy behind the counter was super friendly and polite. He made my coffee quickly and right. Espumoso offers much more than coffee as well. They have ice cream, smoothies, and sandwiches.
