I've been to the spot a couple of times and know they have good pizza so I stopped by and saw, like another local pizza spot, they have this Chimi pie. I had never heard of it up until a few months ago so when I saw the slice I decided to give it a try. The ingredients of Angus ground beef, cabbage, tomatoes, corn, red onions, special chimi sauce don't really sound too attractive on a pie however it was very very good. I tend to always go for regular slices however every once in a while I like to give something new a try and I'm glad I did. Finally real NYC style pizza in my neightbor hood. Great amazing pizza, wings and they sell it by the slice. Can't ask for more. The spot is pretty cool and the people are great. Since moving to the area I've been trying to find a good pizzeria that's open on sundays. I've tried a few and was unimpressed, until I tried Essex. Their pizza is authentic New York style with the perfect crust-sauce-cheese ratio. The sauce tastes fresh and the cheese is so gooey and delicious. I'm a soft crust kind of girl so their crust was perfect for me. If you prefer a slightly charred under carriage, you may have to request that. Service was friendly (I called in for pickup) and they had my pizza ready in 10 minutes on a football Sunday! read more

I moved to Maywood a few months ago and I didn't know I had a pizza place so close to my house. I was really excited after reading all of the good reviews that I immediately ordered my pie online through their website, said it would be ready in 20 which was perfect. I ordered a mozzarella and pizza sauce pie with right side mushroom. Arrive to the place and it's really small but I loved the ambiance, clean, a few chairs and tables. They were playing salsa and I'm Hispanic so it wasn't something I was used to hearing at my local pizza shop so I honestly was very excited to support this small business. I arrived a few mins early but my pie was ready, everyone seemed nice and a guy who looked like the manager/ owner offered me a menu and then I was on my way. When I got home I realized that I got a whole mushroom pie so I called them and informed them of their mistake and that I was going to be on my way back soon so they could get started on the new pie. Immediately the girl on the other end said that they got an order for a Mushroom pizza and I explained that I already checked and I in fact did order a cheese pizza half mushroom. She tells me that maybe I made a mistake because her computer and receipt says mushroom. Again I explained that I had my email receipt in-front of me and I did press right side Mushroom. She insisted that it wasn't their mistake, so now I'm getting frustrated because it seemed like she wanted to brush me off the phone as if I was going to just keep the pizza that I did not order. She continued to tell me that maybe the third party messed up and I told her there was no third party I ordered the pizza myself and it was through their direct website. I asked her if the problem is that she wanted to physically see my receipt before remaking it and she said "it's not going to change the order that they received on their end", which supposedly said whole mushroom pie. I immediately informed her that I was on my way! Once I get there everyone seems to be around the register and the man who i assume to be the manager/ owner at first said he was just talking about the situation. Tells me if I look at his computer I would see that the order says just mushroom. I explained that I understood, but it did not change the fact that I ordered half mushroom and had my email receipt to prove it and if there was a glitch with their system i would understand but that's something that they had to take care of, it had nothing to do with me. He said it would be a waste to remake me a whole pie so he eventually decided to take half of my pie which he put back to resell (not knowing what was done to the pizza) and gave me 3 regular cheese slices which would supposedly come out to half of a pie ... I was frustrated and annoyed so I agreed ONLY because I wanted to leave and my son did not eat mushroom so I needed the cheese pizza. By then I had drove to pick up the pie , drove home, drove back to the pizza shop, had to drive back home and got blamed numerous times for placing the "wrong order" and NOT ONE SINGLE EMPLOYEE APOLOGIZED TO ME!!! It is the only reason I decided to leave the review, other wise I would have not made this public. Had they taken responsibility and redid my pizza after I showed my receipt but they were too busy trying to blame me. He had the audacity to tell me next time to call and order my pie to make sure "my order was taken correctly" and I told him that was not necessary because I was not planing on ever coming back. The whole situation left a sour taste in my mouth and although I was very excited at first I will not be returning to this place of business. Just to review the actual pizza it was a 3/5 I've had better mushroom pizza in Pizza Nova in Fort Lee this one had toooo much mushroom and the actual mushroom was kinda slimy, don't know how to explain it. I called for delivery and i live in Garfield and they are located in lodi which is the next town over, and the girl side they don't deliver to Garfield, ended ordering in grubhub and the pizza flops and the cheese was droopy it was definitely not worth the frustration of the hoops for delivery. read more

When i moved from nyc I tried dozens of pizzerias looking for that authentic NYC Slice and could not find it. Today my day was made when I googled best pizza near me and this place popped up. The crust was floppy, the sauce was way too sweet, and the cheese wasn't fully melted. The Garlic Parmesan wings we ordered were bland. The Garlic Knots were good though.
