A brief background; been in Chicago for about 15 years. Heard of Au Cheval back in 2015 or 16. Took a while to give it a shot and went; wait for 2 hours. Hmmmmm, didn't work out. Tried a second time 2 or 3 years later. Still didn't happen. Tried a third time when I had a friend visiting from overseas....wait time was just so long and just didn't have the 'desire' to wait that long. I think for the first time in my life, I had to kick myself as I wish I would have waited the very first time. Had my nephew visiting me from out of town. While I did want to take him to Au Cheval, with the limited time I had, I did not want to wait. I happened to go on their website and noticed that they now offer reservations. That was one of the most beautiful sights I had seen in a long time. Not only do I get to take my nephew out to Au Cheval, but I myself finally get to try the burgers here that have been the talk of the town and were rated the best burger in the United States of America for many years. My nephew absolutely devoured and loved the burger. He was in heaven. I cannot say I was not in heaven myself because the burger was absolutely epic, but that's not just what this review is about. This review is about one of the few joints in America that I have come across and that provided the level of attention to detail and went way above and beyond what I would have ever imagined in my wildest dreams to make this a memorable lunch. She had gone with my mother-in-law as well, so it was my mother-in-law, my nephew, and I. My mother-in-law is a vegetarian, and we figured we would go ahead and get the fries. What we did not know was that the fries are in beef tallow or have some beef seasoning (I forget), so in the end, she was not able to eat anything. My nephew and I just ordered each a burger. Our server proactively brought a house salad, which was vegetarian, and he said, "This is on the house. You guys enjoy the burgers." That, honestly, is a level of service that goes beyond usual service, but there was human empathy involved here. After a while, the head chef comes out, super friendly, and asks how everything was. He then says, "I heard you've been waiting 10 years over here, and I hope it was worth it." He made sure my mother and I were comfortable, and he made sure my nephew was comfortable. The level of service and care here was very special, and I personally appreciated it from the heart. For me, it was a memory built with my nephew and my mother-in-law, one that is going to stick with us for the rest of our lives. Not to mention, I am getting hungry right now, so I need to make a reservation and go down there tomorrow.

You know what really grinds my gears? Bitchy bartenders. I went to this place with high hopes but they were brutally crushed by the oppressive she-beast working the bar. Be prepared to feel like you took your invisible pills that morning since the people working there seem to cater to no one. When they finally decide to grace you with their presence, it's not service with a smile, and I would advise you order all the beers you plan to drink for the night right then. Since after that the bartenders turn into the lockness monster and bigfoot. Rare sightings that if you do actually encounter them there's a good chance they will rip your heart out alla Mortal Kombat style.(I've seen enough clips of "Finding Bigfoot" to know what I'm talking about.) In the end I wanted to tell the broads working there, "Bitch, you work under the train tracks. Get that fixed gear out of your ass!" Oh and a word of advice, if you insist ignoring your customers put the closed captioning on the TV so people can follow the shitty movies you're playing. Oh boy, Estelle's. When I think of this place, I think of the smell of period shits. Estelle's is the used tampon of Chicago. Let me think of some of the great times I have had here. Um... hmm... that comes up as a big, fat none. Every time I have been here I have almost gotten into a fight or got hit on by some choice women (read: psycho hose beasts). One night it was some lady's 30th birthday, so she decided that meant I should make out with her. I tried to politely decline, but that just egged her and her snatch-trap friends on. I eventually hid in the bathroom. The problem is, the bathroom is like stepping into a herpes pool, so that spot didn't last long. Eventually I just came out and took the handy from her, but I wasn't pleased. Seriously, going into this place is about as much of a gamble as sharing needles with your heroin addict friend from Seattle. Except needle drugs are more fun and way cooler. Yeah yeah, so it's not perfect bar, whatever. Two dollar Tuesdays are fucking AWESOME! I'm a beer snob and literally can't drink any domestic "beer" such as miller/bud/coors, so I HAVE to drink good beer and here you can get all manner of tasty tasty microbrews for $2 all night. I mean really, coming out having downed a stout, an IPA, an amber ale, and a bitter ale for $8 is realllly good. The bartenders were very friendly and welcoming considering they were soo busy. Also, lots of cool peeps and hot chickies show up, so it's a sweet social scene too. I imagine most of the people saying "I hate all the hipsters there" are probably hipsters themselves. Ignore them and check out this place on Tuesday, it's the tastiest night of the week. read more

Worst bar I've ever been to. I once posted a review on this "bar" that was taken down, because I went through all of the assaults that friends had faced here. I'm not going to do that again, but ladies- if you want to go out and have a good time without some greasy dude with an ironic jean jacket groping you, there are other 4am bars. There is no conversing in this bar. It's all lines. Line to get a drink. Line to pee. Line held up because ugly hipster is getting beejed by a girl that has no self respect. The service is just about as friendly as this post. To be fair, they are probably just projecting their daily life for working at this garbage dump. Estelles sucks! The service and the staff is so bad and rude that even one of the waitresses there has a chair that she sits on when she is not serving the customers, who has ever heard of a waitress standing down on the job. The front staff is extremely rude and only lets in a selected or specific individuals, this is cause for certain discriminatory lawsuit based on Constitutional rights through the 15th Amendment, and the 14th Amendment, which prohibits business from discriminating against individuals of race or gender. read more

Don't come here after 2am if being in a bar where it's packed elbow to elbow isn't your thing. Though it's one of the few after hours bars in the neighborhood and sometimes you can catch some good tunes on the jukebox. read more

For our charcuterie board, they have you choose a minimum of three (cheese or meat) for $8 each, then everything else on the board is complimentary. It came with bread, pickles, grapes, jam, mustard, and nuts. We chose the red rock (a blue cheddar cheese) and purple haze (soft goat cheese), plus the wagyu pastrami (I liked this a lot). The burger was alright to me. The fries were really good. I would come back just for the drinks because they were delicious!

It gets very loud once they switch from day-to-night eras, so it can get a little hard to hear your party. The service is great too, the bartenders are good at suggesting which drinks you might like based on your previous drinks/interests.

This place is excellent for a great (and usually unique but always delicious) cocktail. I felt the need to write a review since every one of my visits, without fail, has been top notch. It's also clear that the owners have spent the time to curate the vibe - music/decor/ambiance - and have done a great job making it feel like an escape from your everyday bar. I also appreciate that it doesn't feel forced and I don't feel like I'm paying more for being at a trendy cocktail bar. No Taffer influence here. The white seats + the ambient Christmas lighting matched the content of the show perfectly. The acoustics were good and I was only pulled out of the show mentally a couple of times by the roar of an emergency vehicle siren. The sound system was crystal clear. My friend went to go purchase us Waterloo Sparkling Water for $2 per the wall, but the bartender gave it to her for free from the soda gun--I wasn't mad at that. Due to trekking from the suburbs to Wrigleyville, the timing was off to try the restaurant, but I appreciate the venue and look forward to the next show that piques my interest there!
