I discovered Etch Salon just by chance when I needed a last minute highlight appointment the first month I lived in Phoenix. I was in a hotel off Scottsdale Road, did a map search and I think I got in on a cancellation with Phoebe. Haven't gone to another salon or another stylist since! I split my time between NYC and Scottsdale and haven't had a real hair place to go to but I think I finally found it. Maria is awesome. My hair feels great and healthy and looks voluptuous despite me being sure that there's only like 89 pieces up there in total. I hate paying hundreds of dollars when there's only like one way to cut my fine hair and it always looks the same, ya know? But ETCH is decently priced and centrally located and they offer a kick ass head massage with that hairwash! The girls I talked to at the front desk were great and sweet and helpful, also. I was seen right on time, Maria had thoughts and ideas which was helpful because of my defeated attitude when it comes to my damn locks. Just a great experience overall. My roots were not even colored and then the hair extension they had me buy is itchy and nasty! $579 later for extensions and $303 later for hair and I think I would have been better off at ultra or Supercuts! read more

Last week, I received one of the worst haircuts I've ever gotten at this salon. In the beginning, I asked the stylist to trim 2 1/2 inches and do light layering around my face. He tried to convince me to add more "movement" to my hair by adding layers throughout. Stylists have tried to do this before and I've never liked it, but he was persistent that it would look good and promised the layers would be very long and that I'd barely be able to notice them. I acquiesced and said they had to be very, very long. In the middle of the haircut, when I noticed things were looking odd, I even questioned him about the length, and he promised the layers were "super long." Well I walked out with shaggy layers all over my head, all very short, some above me ears, and with the worst haircut I've ever had. My hair looks horrible, it was not even close to what he'd promised, and I'm embarrassed to wear my hair out of a ponytail. So disappointed in Etch and don't plan to ever go back. read more

Ryan McKinley has been my stylist at Etch for almost 5 years. He's by far the best stylist and colorist I've ever had. Even better than the stylists I'd had during the 10 years I had my hair done in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood. Before finding Ryan on Yelp - yes, that's right, I found him because of a Yelp review :] I had been drifting between salons all over Scottsdale looking for someone who was good at both cut and color. Most of the salons I'd gone to had you see a colorist and a separate stylist. I don't have that many hours to sit around a salon, and scheduling two services is a nightmare when you live a busy life. Not only does Ryan do a fantastic job with both cut and color, he's also a great stylist. He makes me feel beautiful every time I leave his chair. He is very professional and highly personable. He always has a smile on his face and a kind word to say. When you are in his chair, he makes you feel that you are the only person in the room. Ryan also does training for young stylists hopeful of working at Etch. Since going to him we've seen him work with 5 different stylists-in-the-making. He is highly professional in the way he treats them, and includes them in his styling process. He is instructional, fair, informative, and firm but with a gentle touch. He sets his expectations high with them, and they have risen to the occasion. The client never feels as though Ryan is paying more attention to the student than the client. My husband also goes to Ryan. He always walks out looking fantastic. He even recommends Ryan to his friends. If you're looking for a stylist who listens to what you want and actually does it - and in many ways does it better, then Ryan McKinley is the stylist you want. I've held off on writing this review for as long as I have, I think because I secretly don't want Ryan to get so busy I can never get in to see him - haha. read more

This salon is a scene - lots of stylists, lots of people hanging out, loud, busy. Clearly a lot of people come here and seem to enjoy it. I think. I can't say I feel the same. The 2 stars are for two reasons. 1. the colorist didnt listen to what I wanted. I explicitly said I didn't want to be any blonder than I was - that my hair was too blonde as is. And I ended up much blonder and I believe only bleach was used. I should have spoken up, but from past experience if a colorist only uses bleach (and you're not looking for very blonde hair) it's not a good sign. 2. Also since the colorist didn't do blow drys I switched to another stylist who did my blow dry - it was a good and she was sweet - but it was $60. That's insane. I didn't want/need a Dry Bar-level blow dry (dry bar is cheaper btw). I just needed a solid blow dry to check out the color and be on my way. The next day I couldn't stand how blonde I was, it washed me out. So I went to another salon to get a toner on my hair which helped dramatically!! It's now the perfect golden blonde color. read more

Came here a few months ago for a color correction . Suzanne was my stylist . Over all liked my hair , but felt alittle shade thrown my way . Her asst was lovely and answered a lot of my questions . She told me the price of extra conditioner and I agreed to it . But a simple blow dry was an extra $50 ! I even mentioned nothing to crazy I was heading home to go work out . I think this should be mentioned as well as any add on's . I was called to review my service and was credited for $38 treatment to use next service . After I thought about it , I felt a mistrust with stylist so I began a new mission for a new stylist once again lol. I spent over $400 for service and products - I am not a cheap spender - just be up front with things. Over all the salon was busy but very boring vibe . I have been going to a genius stylist for about 5 years now, but she's been traveling so much recently that I was forced to see someone new for my last appointment. I've driven past Etch at Kierland Commons dozens of times, and have recently had a couple of friends try them out with fairly decent results. I prefer to have my hair colored and cut by the same person, and they were happy to accommodate. However, I believe that they normally schedule a separate stylist, colorist, assistant, etc. My appointment was with Janine, who had her work cut out for her when I went in - my hair was about 8 inches longer than it needed to be and my roots had started taking over. I was a little nervous to have my long hair cut drastically short by someone I hadn't been to before, but she did a fantastic job, and did so with very little instruction/guidance. The color was perfect and I couldn't have asked for a better cut. I really enjoyed the salon. It is clean, edgy and appears to have all of the latest and greatest hair styling toys. The entire experience ran me $170, which is more than i typically pay, but I think it is a competitive price for the area. The salon is open late and on weekends, which is very convenient. I will definitely return. **I should also mention that another friend of mine, Fuzzy (called that because of his fuzzy hair), who has had his hair cut by the same barber since he was 6 years old, was recently given an extreme-hair-makeover by Ryan. Ryan not only proved his genius status by seriously updating his look, but was very friendly along the way and patiently showed Fuzzy how to keep up his style after he left the salon. Went to AZ to visit family and was in desperate need of some re-dying. Normally, I am not the type to go to random hair stylists, but had heard great reviews about this salon. I had been recommended Ashley and luckily she was working that day. I had an idea of what kind of color I wanted, but wanted to go a few shades darker. She actually took the time to listen to what I had to say and is very pleasant to talk to. I was expecting my hair to look descent when I left, but instead it was AMAZING! I had been searching for a new stylist for quite some time and have had bad luck in the past. I have very curly hair & it's easy for stylist to get scissor happy. BUT I felt very confident after having a consultation with Suzanne. She educated me on what the process would be for the desired look as well as her professional opinion. The process took close to 2 hours for a full hair color and haircut, and my hair feels immaculate. It's soft, shiny and full of body, I am extremely pleased to call her my new stylist. Her assistant was very friendly, and attentive. The two are a great pair. Always room for improvement - front desk.. My appointment was for 2:30pm and my stylist didn't greet me until 2:45. I understand appointments running over etc, but I wish the front desk would have let me know. As a new client in a new salon it would have made me feel more welcome. I went in to get my hair dyed brown from box dye hair and the stylist(so sorry I forgot his name) didn't do it exactly how I wanted it the first time so he spent four hours the next day fixing it and it turned out PERFECT with no damage!!!! I had nice thick shoulder length hair until I went to Etch for a cut/color. Now, my hair is shredded and thinned our with no shape whatsoever. I think the stylist was trying to texturize it or something, but it is awful. Went to a nail salon close to where I work for gels...they were thick, uneven and the lack of quality just may have been due to the manicurist taking calls while she was doing my nails. A friend whose nails always look really nice recommended Yen at Etch. WOW! Like night and day. Of course the fill was more expensice $45, but this is DEFINITELY a case of you get what you pay for. They look so natural - great color, shape, length - AND THEY'RE THIN AND EVEN!!!! adn let me just add this - she did all this in a shorter time than normal because I had booked an appointment for something else. I was in the area and decided it's about time to get a haircut. Picked up my phone to ask if they'd take walks in and they did I barely waited 5mins and i was welcomed to what looks kinda small from the outside but don't be fooled it's big. The place was fairly busy even though I was there during the week so I can only imagine how busy it gets on weekends. I was greeted with my hair stylist (Lily) which literally went above and beyond my expectations. Not only did she do what I wanted but she also gave me a lot of knowledge from taking care of my hair to styling it with that perfect look. It's also worth mentioning that they use top tear products. The wax that she used in my hair was $40 when I asked her about it. But then I was like they must be making profits of it and I'll be better of buying it online. But oh I was wrong that was its original price and I really liked that product. Prices are a little on the expensive ($40) side but if you're looking for that perfect haircut every now and then this is it. I've always thought that Toni&Guy is the best but not anymore. read more

I'm definitely going back! I went to Ashely (thanks to Patti's recommendation below) and I agree, she is adorable! I went in needing some highlights and a trim and once I saw her (Ashely's) hair I said, "I want your hair!" and she did it! I've been going to Jamie Rae for cuts, highlights and styling for the past 3 years. She is an absolute gem and basically a hair genius! Getting my hair cut and colored used to be such a nerve wrecking experience for me but since I found her I always look forward to my appointments and have always left LOVING my new look. Only once has there been an issue with color (My dark hair wouldn't hold the reddish brown highlights I wanted). While I wasn't upset by any means, Jamie knew it wasn't what I was envisioning and was determined to fix it for me. She ended up calling the product manufacturer, finding a solution and called me back 2 days later to schedule an appointment for me to return to the salon so she could re-do my hair color on the house. She goes above and beyond and genuinely cares. Oh and side note- the salon itself has an amazing atmosphere (make sure you book your appt for a Saturday and dress UP to really get the full experience. Trust me on this). This review is for Teresa who works in this salon. I came to her last August or September fed up with my hair. In fact I'd been fed up with it for years. I have very thick, stiff, straight hair with some gnarly cowlicks. My hair wants to go the direction it goes, and there's little one can do to fight it. In addition, my hairline comes down quite low on my forehead and isn't straight across by any means. I realize many men who are bald or balding will have little sympathy for me as I have a full thick head of hair, but I can tell you it is unruly and over the years I've been to many stylists (some very high-end and expensive) who've been unable to give me a decent cut that is flattering and doesn't require a long daily styling routine. Even supposedly very well trained and experienced stylists have struggled with my hair. They don't believe me when I sit down in the chair and tell them, "if you take off any length here by my part it's not going to go down and we'll have to go way short". Needless to say I've spent most of my life with very short cuts that require little to no styling but aren't very good looking. Enter Teresa. We were already starting from a previous bad cut and you can imagine I'm not the easiest customer to please. She took the time to listen to my experiences and then came up with a game plan. She didn't tell me I'd have an amazing cut that day, but told me within 4-6 cuts she'd have me looking great. It wasn't going to be the easiest in the meantime, but she assured me if I stuck with her she'd make it happen. And she was right. During my first cut, as she worked she showed me the direction my hair grows on my head and the problem areas. She described how the cuts I'd been getting were problematic because they were trying to fight my hair instead of work with it. I left that first day with a good looking cut, but that required a lot of work each day to style. For three more cuts we let areas grow, trimmed other spots, and worked towards a goal of a great men's cut to highlight my thick head of hair. Each time at the end of the cut she would carefully take me through the whole styling process so I could do it at home. With each cut the styling got easier. I think just having someone educate me about my hair and how to style has made a huge difference. Nobody has ever taken the time to do that before. I just had my hair cut by Teresa a few days ago, and now I've got a great swept back cut that it professional and clean. Best of all, when I get out of the shower with my hair wet, it practically falls into place. Styling is now a breeze. She also fixed my hairline problem with a little straight razor which I can maintain at home. My confidence is through the roof, and it's all thanks to Teresa for taking the time to really help someone who was clueless. Thank you Teresa! read more
