I have wanted to try Extra Virgin for some time. So glad we finally made it, as it was a good experience. First, parking can be tricky, but we were lucky. Both the restaurant and the patio were lovely, and felt warm and comfortable. Our actual table was fine, but very small for two when tapas are the primary offering. It was difficult to manage more than two food items, and we actually did not order any additional items because of this. The cocktails were fun and inventive and the food was good, though not outstanding as I was expecting. We had the giant prawns, hummus/Mezze spreads and a roasted feta plate. All were well prepared, though the prawns were slightly overdone and the feta was tough and difficult to spread. I felt like everything was close to hitting the mark, just missing by a bit. Nice atmosphere-great smells entering and very friendly and courteous employees throughout the evening. Great service-waiter was friendly, explained the meals, helped with portion size. Meals are smallish plates, family style to be shared. They are very cognizant of celiac disease and assured us there would be no cross contamination of foods or plates. Veggies in addition to pita for the GF requirement. For the 4 of us we ordered: 1) meza spread--beet+carrot hummus + baba-ganoush --all excellent. 2) cucumber salad-not something I personally order but it was superb--the peanuts made it unique and tasty. 3) Grilled bread and ricotta cheese--very nice-plenty to share. 4) chickpea fries-interesting-not greasy and a nice dipping sauce. 5) 1/2 cornish game hen--a wonderful cinnamon rub and other spices-kinda small for 3 to share and beware of tiny bones! 6)beef skewer--tender, well spiced, tzatziki sauce to dip in and plenty to share. They brought out the food in shifts so we had table space as well as keeping the hot entrees hot. Overall we had just the right amount of food for 4 people. Amazing meal--I wished I lived here. This was to die for. I came for a friend's birthday, and while extremely hesitant as a picky eater, I was blown away by both the food and the energy. I wish I had gotten photos of all the dishes we had, but since most are tapas, we ordered quite a few for sharing. We tried the hummus trio, which was absolutely phenomenal. I would recommend ordering an extra side of pita, you will most likely want it. We also tried the eggs, cauliflower, chickpea fries, and more! For my main entree I had the spicy vodka pasta. Every single dish tasted well made and perfectly seasoned. Mediterranean food was never my favorite, but now it is definitely something I am interested to continue to explore in flavors. Extra Virgin is always a solid spot for happy hour in KC. Monday-Friday from 4-6 PM they offer 50% off select menu items designated with the "HH". They also have specials throughout the week including wine and rosé nights. The menu is extensive and is great for both meat lovers as well as vegetarians. This place is all about the shareable plates so grab your friends and come hungry. We started with the mezze spreads and the grilled bread & ricotta dish. These two are my absolute favorites because you just can't go wrong with dipping carbs in delicious spreads! We continued on with the steamed mussels and the duck leg confit, both of which we thought were on the salty side but still pretty tasty. For a seasonal item we chose the fire-roasted pumpkin with white bean purée which was excellent and highly recommend, nice pop of color and taste with the pomegranate seeds. Another one of my favorites was the chickpea fries, stacked in Jenga-esque fashion. And then no better way to finish off the meal than with churros, which were perfection. We had the beef kofta kabob, Cornish hen, roasted feta, fudgy eggs and roasted autumnal vegetables. I can't believe what a great value the happy hour is. They were all delicious but I was especially enamored by the halved fudgy eggs and, of all things, the roasted vegetables. We came on the same day as First Fridays in the Crossroads, which made for the perfect start to the evening. Recommended: Lebanese hummus ($10*) - creamier than normal hummus and delicious with the accompanying pita. Fattoush salad ($12*) - great, fresh, not too much pita or drowning in dressing. Halved fudgy eggs ($8*) - amazing. 10/10, would come for these, order multiple plates, and still take some home to go. They look so simple but somehow they're magic. Lamb kebab ($18) - juicy. I love lamb and this is a great example of how to prepare it. Simple but yummy. Hit or miss: Falafel ($12*) - strange seasoning in tzatziki, but crispy. Not particularly greasy or savory/tasty, which could be a hit or a miss for some people. Sauteed mushrooms ($14) - These were pretty sour. It felt like I was having hot and sour soup with all of the flavor and mushroom but with the soup liquid replaced by oil and chili. Would be good if it weren't drowning in its own sauce and sourness. Surprised this didn't have happy hour pricing, because it feels like it should. Roasted branzino ($28) - preserved lemon is a choice. I don't like it because it can be pungent/overpowering and kind of bitter, which is how it came off here. The patio was a perfect spot to enjoy a small plates and a bottle of wine. We ordered the Lebanese hummus, the heirloom tomato salad, the roasted feta, the wood fired shrimp, and an off menu special of scallops. While each dish was delicious, the roasted feta was my favorite. The dukkah spice was unique and made the dish quite interesting. The wine list is very approachable with bottles at many price points. First of all the guys who work at the bar are great. They're just incredibly nice and mellow and they'll give you good recommendations. The drinks are not expensive and they're delicious. I highly recommend all the cocktails, even though I tend to always wanna get the Negroni. We have been going here for years, and I did not realize I had not yet written a review to express how fantastic this place is. The food is nearly perfect. I do not think I can go here without getting the roasted feta, served in a cast iron pan topped with red onions, pepitas and amazing spices. It's also almost even better reheated at home. The olives are also the best I've had in Kansas City. My wife grew up where falafel originated, and yet she has stated that Extra Virgin's falafel is the best she has ever had. I've had many other dishes and just about everything is phenomenal. The one thing I would never want again is the chickpea fries. They have been on the menu for years, so I presume some folks like them, but they are not for me. The cocktails are great and they usually have some lesser known classics, such as a Sidecar. A while back they featured a pumpkin cocktail which was my wife's all-time favorite. The bar is fairly large, and I've found you don't always get the greatest service sitting there, but I've only ever had an actually bad experience once, and that was a couple years ago. I've never made my own official list, but I suspect that if I did, Extra Virgin would be in my Top 5 restaurants in the KC metro. read more

The smoked salmon dip with fried potato was scrumptious and filling for starter. The grilled branzino was fantastic. Bright Mediterranean marinade and then nicely charred skin from the grill to add depth while keeping the tender filet. The dessert- a Turkish coffee chocolate tort with sprinkled walnut and side of Chantilly cream and caramel. So freaking good. this is my favorite place in Kansas City and I am so happy I live just a few minutes walking from it. It was one of the first places I tried when I moved here and I've been here several times after and it never disappoints. This is the first stop that I bring out-of-town visitors to and they always always tell me how much they love it (even after they left). Being Lebanese, I love that they have a great flavor of Mediterranean food that satisfies my craving when I'm homesick. It's set up as a tapas / small plates to share which makes it fun to go with a large party or just a few friends. The service is always attentive and they always have great suggestions for dishes to try. I always get the Gin Z cocktail which is so refreshing and easy to drink. I would say the must gets are the grilled bread & ricotta, fatoush salad, falafel and sautéed mushrooms. But you seriously can't go wrong with any of the other options on the menu. I would say the menu is reasonably priced and the vibe in the restaurant is very casual. So I was charged with finding a great place for happy hour on Monday, and it turns out that a lot of places are not open or do not have happy hour on Mondays... BUT Extra Virgin DOES, and IT'S GREAT. So they have happy hour every weekday from 4-6 pm, which is fantastic--but they also have specials every day of the week (check online for those because I guess I've only ever gone on Mondays...). I will totally vouch for their happy hour offerings (check out the chickpea fries.. So good), and they're Mondays are the best: they have a specialty pizza offering every Monday (it changes every week!) and there are half price wine BOTTLES. Yes, that's right folx, half price bottles. Their cocktails are also fantastic - - Max, the server, suggested the Old Fashioned which was bomb. And then he orders me a fantastic John Collins - - whiskey version of a Tom Collins. Overall, drinks are In my experience, Mondays can be quite busy around happy hour time, so it may be a good idea to get a reservation, but the service has always been wonderful no matter if I've sat at the bar or if I've sat at the tables. Decided to take my side for an early evening sampling of goodness. It was my second time in three days! We started with the Mezze Spread. This has three different types of spreads. My wife's favorite was the carrot hummus and mine was the baba ghanoush. I also enjoyed the beet hummus. We followed this with the "Beets" which was my favorite dish of the night with balanced sweetness, bitterness, and crunch. We then had the wood-fired shrimp which were a little spicy for my wife but I liked them. For dessert I had the babka with the orange-cardamom ice cream. The ice cream was beyond words. My wife had the churros which she enjoyed but having just been in Spain, we both preferred our Spanish churros. None-the-less, they were still very good and the churros were light. If you're expecting large portions this isn't your place! For lunch we ordered the hummus, herb escarole salad, halved fudgy eggs, lamb kebabs and baklava. It was more than enough for two people! The hummus was superb and the flatbread had a smokey essence that complimented well. I will say what caught me by surprise were the half fudgy eggs. They were fresh, flavorful and bright. I would definitely recommend ordering them. If you're looking for a unique salad try the herb escarole. It does have a slight kick because of the shishito peppers but overall interesting and tasty salad. The lamb kebabs paired nicely with the whole spread but it did take a while to cook so I wasn't able to enjoy it with everything. And I would probably skip on the baklava. Although gorgeous looking it was hard and crunchy. Definitely pricier so don't expect to spend less than $30. Parking is quite tricky so prepare to walk. read more
