So this is the place to go if you want fine food and drink and to be made extremely uncomfortable by the server. The first of a party to arrive should not be faint of heart, since they can expect an aggressive interrogation regarding the number of people in their party, when they will be arriving, and what the nature of their visit will be. But the real treat of the evening happens when the server commands your utter silence while reciting the evening's specials. At this point, an intentional mispronunciation of one of the more complex dishes by the least bashful member of your party makes for some much needed comic relief and the opportunity to finally acknowledge amongst your fellow dining companions that this server is in fact a fucking asshole. ...food was okay. That said, they have a really great happy hour - discounted drinks and many of the regular menu items (all tapas or small plates) are 1/2 price. We tried cabrito (baby goat) empanadas, chorizo & fig filled chicken thigh, spanish meatballs, wild boar cacciatorini & chicken livers - all ok to good. After a week of hard work looking forward to a night out at "Extra Virgin" of such great acclaim, I was soooorely disappointed with not so much the quality but the disastrous execution of all of the dishes I had at EV. Did I miss something? The drinks were great - they had a wonderfully satisfying caipirinha but I was there to eat! Ceviche - LOVE IT. A coconut full of green and red onion with a hint of not-perfectly-fresh fish, not so much. And the octopus - I can't think of any combination of green and brown that makes for an appealing sauce; which nonetheless could have never made this chewy concoction right. There is a fine line between done and DONE when dealing with octopus. This was on another level. Ok, so we'll move on to some lamb chops. Those are hard to ruin. In a twist to my usual complaint to lamb - this was not only drastically undercooked (read: barely seared and bitterly cold) but had NO flavor other than the thick chutney sauce it was served on. The good was just "not bad" with a prosciutto ravioli and an "escarole" salad. Overall an extremely disappointing experience which left me regretting what I ate. And that, along with writing negative reviews, I rarely do. read more

I wanted to love this place. Decor so inviting and warm...extensive and what looked to be creative menu. Went for happy hour (all the way until 6pm!) since many of the tapas are 50% off. My dining partner and I shared a whopping 8 tapas, just to sample as much as we could. (Again, they were half-off...why not!?) Pig Ear Salad: the greens weren't dressed with enough flavor. Lots of pig ear strips... those were crisp, but the dressing simply seemed like oil and weighed the dish down even more. Chickpea Fries: Another item we wanted to love. Giant fries the size of Jenga blocks. Romanesco sauce. Now, let me say...the fries were rather tasteless, and unfortunately, the sauce seemed a little scorched. I thought it had peanut butter in it, that's how off the flavorings seemed. Flat Iron Steak: good, seared and tender-- pickled onions were nice Fig & Chorizo Stuffed Chicken Thighs: also quite flavorful and moist Watercress & Grapefruit Salad: same complaint as the pig ear salad. Seemed weighed down with olive oil and not seasoned enough. Mussels: I lived for 10 years in New England. I know good mussels. These were okay. Rich and dense in flavor, but overly greasy. Meatballs: better than the ones at La Bodega...super moist, but a bit bland. Overall...I'd do EV again, but would order different plates...less meats...more veggies. read more

Visiting from Chicago - I enjoyed the little sister to Michael Smith's upscale restaurant. I wasn't disappointed after deciding not to wait on a Saturday night. The small plates all looked amazing, but after deciding on 5 to share - focused on more of the meat/egg centric with a snail starter. The Peruvian Eggs and potatoes were the balance. All in all the dishes were amazing - the one comment is that all of the eggs made things very rich. I would like to go back and enjoy the outdoor seating for happy hour. read more

Michael Smith is one of my favorite chefs in Kansas City. Ive followed his cuisine since 40 Sardines. I rate this restaurant a two because of poor service. Sadly my experience at Extra Virgin was tainted by the barkeep, a tall blonde guy, and his condescending and extremely immature demeanor. Its really difficult to enjoy good food with bad service. I ordered every menu item with oysters on the menu the mac & cheese and grilled ricotta bread while sipping champagne. Fabulous! Having recently moved to KC and looking for some high quality places to eat, I was directed towards Michael Smiths and Extra Virgin. 1. Atmosphere - With an extremely energetic and great bar filled environment it was a really just "fun" all over. Staff knows their menu and Bartenders know every drink in the book, how to explain it for a novice, and how to really make your time enjoyable. 2. Food - INCREDIBLE... for a Tapas place, I was extremely impressed. We ordered 5 plates to test. We ordered to hummus, the shrimp fried rice (MUST GET), Spanish Meatballs, The hanger steak, and for Dessert the Pear Crostada. 3. Bar - As I mentioned earlier the bar was very impressive but many key items stand out. The bar space is great, no matter where you sit, you have en elegant view of everything want to see. I ordered "The Last Word" which was a first for me but very enjoyable. It's always fun to be in the middle of actions that witnesses all the and food coming your your way or around it 4. ONE MAJOR SETBACK WHICH IS THE ONLY REASON THEY ARE RECEIVING 4 STARS RATHER THAN 5. I never brought this to the attention of any manager but I should have. As mentions earlier we ordered the Hanger Steak, which was delicious by the way. It was prepared with a side of kale but the steak is rarely cooked and sliced thin. After enjoying it, I turned around to notice the cook preparing all of these Steaks so it was clearly a high seller. While watching him, there were no gloves worn whatsoever. I'm not a picky person but growing up in the food industry I know you can't do that. If your chefs are visible to the front of the house, you CANNOT be putting your raw hands on every dish you prepare. That's is just a no-no. I witnessed him grabbing multple raw pieces of meat along with the kale itself and other dishes without washing a single finger or ever decided to use gloves. What bothers me the most is the fact that the restaurant is set up that way in which w can see them prepare... if I can see you touch my food, please give the customer a since of security when eating because it was flat out DISGUSTING. Blood from someones steak then to grab the kale without the use of tongs is unacceptable and I hope Michael is informed. Overall besides one incident, I loved it, I will return, and I will recommend to everyone. read more

Joined 5 friends for Happy Hour. I ordered deviled eggs (a little over seasoned) and the shrimp and pork belly fried rice (fantastic). My partner ordered grilled mushrooms and a Greek salad ( mushrooms were great, salad was good). We both had Happy Hour cocktails, which were excellent. The service was a little lacking. Had to run him down a couple times for drinks. I was unhappy when I received our bill and found an automatic 20% gratuity (for a table of 6) plus I was taxed $1.09 on that gratuity... Halibut was dry and bland in taste...and way overpriced for a slightly large tapas size. It was the price of a really good entire at some of the best restaurants in town at $38. We decided to go out for a Valentine's lunch instead of battling the crowds at dinner time & we could not have been more pleased with Extra Virgin! We ordered the Deviled Eggs, Tuna Ceviche Tacos, Chicken Thighs stuffed with Chorizo and Figs, Wood smoked octopus, and the Fried Pigs ear salad. It was the perfect combination and every dish was excellent! I really liked the tacos and my companion really loved the chicken. We also had a couple of drinks and - the Old Fashioned and a tequila-based drink (can't remember the name). They were very good - I especially liked how the Old Fashioned had a single large ice cube so that the drink did not get watered down. We finished off our meal with the Baklava. Stopped by for a late lunch. Happy hour menu makes for high quality food at affordable prices and starts at 11:30 AM. The star of the show was the beef cheek and snail ravioli plate, a generous serving of al dente pasta stuffed with shredded/diced meaty goodness and coated in a savory light sauce and spring veggies. Simply divine! Also sampled the roasted bone marrow with huge pieces of perfectly toasted bread. Owners are lovely, welcoming and very approachable. Went for lunch during restaurant week. Interestingly it was cheaper for us to order alacarte than it was for the special which consisted of the same thing so was odd. Had the tuna tacos which I would skip next time...there was one tiny piece of tuna in each taco and the rest was filler and had almost no flavor of seasoning. The French onion soup was great...really well done. The poblano Mac and cheese was decent...not anything I would rank as must have in a future visit. My husband had the burger which he liked...cooked well and good quality meat. Excellent Italian wine under dark and fruity category. So as you can see was a bit all over the place. We were able to make a reservation via the restaurant week web page--very nice! We arrived @ 11:30 and there were still tables available, although had we NOT made reservations and waited a few minutes later to arrive we might have had to wait just a few minutes. The menu featured on the restaurant week site had been tweaked just a bit--I wasn't disappointed at all. Choose 3 courses for $15.00--what a deal! We chose to pass on the dessert course and kept our selections to the small plates instead. Next trip maybe I'll do dessert... We chose: Lebanese hummus, tuna ceviche tacos, French onion soup--everything was wonderful! I am a fan of French onion soup and this may be the best I've ever had @ a restaurant! Very good! Tuna tacos--I'd order again! Fresh, tasty, great balance!! Hummus was good, a little bland but I'd order again as well. Next course! Brought my dad here while he was visiting from out of town and had another good experience. Cocktails were excellent as always (and it's nice when I can get my dad to stop, put his glass down, and say "that's a good drink!") We ordered two salads and two steaks, and despite this being a tapas place and knowing that we'd get our food when we got it, it seems they went ahead and coursed things out for us so we got our steaks at the same time, which was nice. Salads were both amazing. I got one with tomato, and he got one with watermelon. Summer is definitely the time to come by here if you're in the mood for something light and fresh. My hanger steak was just alright. It looked like it was cooked correctly but it was a bit tough. It's inexpensive, though, and maybe I'm just used to exceptional hangers. My dad and I shared his ribeye, which was gargantuan, and tasted excellent. It would literally never occur to me to serve a ribeye with pistachios, but it worked beautifully. The menu said the onions which topped the steak were pickled, but I think they were caramelized (?) but either way they were awesome. We didn't see a whole lot of our server, but my dad and I spent a lot of time catching up and talking and I was there for industry night (which, if you're in the industry, Wednesdays after six are THE TIME to go) so I wasn't expecting top priority. This is beautiful food. It takes no cues from the world of the ordinary, yet without pompous nonsense you might expect from such a great effort. I've tried many things on the menu over the last year, and I've enjoyed it all. When I'm eating out I'm always wondering how things are made and what I might try to do differently. But at Extra Virgin I just enjoy the experience, forgetting about how and all that. I always love it when the chef is better than me. And lunch is cheap there, especially for what you get. My most recent visit to Extra Virgin fell short of what I had last time I came in. First, the waiter was nice enough, but he would interrupt us when we were trying to order, and he must not have heard my order because I didn't get what I ordered. I was supposed to get pasta and I got hummus. But I love hummus, so I thought no big deal. The hummus was watered down with olive oil and the pita bread was burnt. I also got the potatoes bravas which was good. And I was happy that they had my favorite wine, Leitz Dragonstone Riesling, which was amazing. We went for happy hour, which most of our items were half off, but it was still pricey. My last experience was awesome and it was great. But this time, it just wasn't as pleasant and when we told the server to split the check (he didn't ask, he just brought a check) he acted pissed off. read more

The only thing I thought about the duck tongue was it wasn't duck tongue it was duck meat and it was a little spicy for my taste. Incredible food! I love coming here for the half-price happy hour. You can get a full meal with an amazing spread for about $10. I highly recommend starting with the grilled bread with ricotta. Add on some fried chickpea fries and grilled oyster mushrooms. I especially like the pancetta mac and cheese. All I can say is that I have never been disappointed with any of the dishes. To top it all off, the service is great. The wait staff are knowledgeable and friendly. They'll also let you know what to order if you're feeling adventurous or squeamish. We shared 5 plates including a meat and cheese selection. Everything was thoughtfully prepared and very tasty. The atmosphere is pleasant, and the service was excellent. I have heard so many wonderful stories about Extra Virgin so I finally decided to go with a group of friends during restraint week. Possibly worst idea 2013. The reasons that I wasn't so fond of this place is because the server was so unhelpful and lazy. Yes, it was busy so we didn't see much of him, but he never apologized for it and was very cold. I'm vegetarian and they brought us half our food then 5 minutes later they brought the other groups food. But when they brought my food they stuck it right in front of me so I took a bite. After chewing I realized it was FISH! They had gotten everyone's food mixed up and I wasn't happy about that because I ate meat when I didn't even know because the two dishes looked similar. This is not something that should get mixed up. I even informed the server before ordering that I was vegetarian. The food was average and nothing that blew my mind. I'm glad I went when the food was cheaper but I will not be going back again, however I would consider drinks to give them a second chance. I'm not hard to please, but this was a domino effect of failures at this particular dinner. read more
