Sometimes you associate Chinatown for 2 things: 1) cheap, good Chinese food and 2) the plethora of seemingly Chinese immigrants standing outside Canal Street shouting "Goo-chee and Ka-pee watch?" Past all the fake brands and the touristy shops and you actually can find a quality optical shop. Now, I generally try to review food as much as possible but this will be my first Yelp review not to because I want to share my enthusiasm and love for this place! Before i moved to NYC (visiting from Miami), I stopped by this place to get a pair of glasses. This optical shop has a wide array of stylish glasses (from asian-inspired to European styles). What i love about this place is that all of their staffs are extremely professional and courteous. They even address me by my full name, which is impressive. No, I don't go that often but it goes to show how attentive to detail and personable their staffs are. You know how sometimes you ask which glasses look good on you and they point you to those that cost significantly more, so they can gain a profit? I didn't feel that pressure here. In fact, when I was looking through a series of glasses, the staffs would give me honest opinion on which glasses they felt look better. Then when I saw the price tag, I was like, surely you've mistaken because the one you recommended to me is a lot cheaper! But, honesty is good policy and because of that, they have gained my trust and through the months, I have continued to support them. I hate staffs who tell you what you want to hear just for the sake of a sale. It's long term customer service that really is the key to sustaining a business! Walk ins are welcome by appointments should be made. However, the eye doctors are knowledgeable and flexible. While waiting on my glasses, i had to wear contacts for the time-being and I haven't worn contacts for over 10 years so i basically forgot the procedures. Initially, I had extreme trouble putting the contacts in (my eyes just wouldn't open) but the staffs were very patient and encouraging with me. I was given generous amounts of samples and was kept up to date on the status of my glasses. They are also my life saver when my glasses get loose or accidental stepped on. One of the guys repair glasses at no charge and always does it with a smile. I love it! Pricing is very reasonable and it takes insurance. Staffs all speak English proficiently and overall, everyone is helpful and you just feel welcome. They definitely are the solutions for my eyes, and they should be for you too! read more

I've only been here to get eye exams and contacts which is good because the back part of the store is quiet while the front can get noisy. While I've never used it the well stocked snack bar in the back is also a nice touch. Everyone here is always friendly and very helpful. Even when you don't have an appointment for an eye exam the wait isn't too bad. If you have a complaint about a brand of contacts you're wearing they suggest some alternatives and will give you a sample pair to try before you order a years supply of something. When using insurance they will tell you upfront what you're covered for and what your out of pocket costs are. There aren't any surprise charges after the exam or contact order. read more

I loved Eye Solutions and it's friendly staff until about a month ago. I walked in looking for Danish Heritage glasses specifically and asked Cindy for help as she was the closest person to me. She was far from helping. All she did was snap at me when I told her I knew the style I wanted, but didn't have the style #. She showed me a few Danish Heritage frames and didn't even bother to take them out for me and walked away from me until I asked her to come back. I described to her the frame I was looking for and asked if they could by chance order it and she brushed me off since she couldn't figure out which frame it was. Could've at least tried since that's her job, no? I then proceeded to ask her for styles similar to what I wanted that didn't have to be Danish Heritage and guess what? Turns out I was talking to myself because she already walked away from me when she should've still been helping. Mind you, it wasn't even busy the day I went. I stormed out and went to ILook 2 minutes away and found the frames I wanted. The staff there was friendly, not pushy, and helped me out at the quickest pace possible because they knew I was in a rush. Everything was quick, but the staff members who helped me spent that short amount of time with me to explain to me everything. Since I have VSP eye insurance, they explained to me my coverage, what I had to pay out of pocket, what lenses would be best for me, etc. And I wouldn't have been in such a rush if I didn't waste my time with Cindy. Another cute perk is ILook is modern and all their frames are displayed on the wall. You won't need to ask to try on frames and risk getting helped by rude staff members like Cindy at Eye Solutions. They also offer beverages at ILook while you wait or browse. Well, Cindy or whatever her name is cost Eye Solutions 3 whole stars. I've been a loyal customer for years and I doubt I'll be going back anytime soon unless this issue with her is addressed. read more

Only reviewing actual eye exam; not customer service when picking out frames which seems to be the only reason why this place is ranked so high. i went to this place two times last May because of the high Yelp review, it's close to my apartment, and they cover my insurance. My fault for going twice. The first time I received what seemed to be normal annual eye exam. Two weeks later I come back for a contact lens fitting and here is when the staff tried to tell me I needed to have another eye exam done and that there was NO file or record of my visit from two weeks earlier. I was on my last pair of contacts and also needed a prescription bottle of eye drops ASAP due to seasonal allergies, so I said whatever after a long time of back and forth and had another eye exam to get these prescription drops. Also note during this back and forth I showed the doctors and staff an EMAIL i received from them with my prescription from the first go round as I had asked for it for reference (thank god). Even after showing them this, the staff could not find my record or history of me being there, even though I was showing them an email from their own email address? Once again, 2nd eye exam (that insurance did not cover this time) was thorough, nice doctor HOWEVER she gives me an entirely different rx than the different doctor did 2 weeks earlier!! I'm talking about major differences: 1st RX: right eye -4, left eye -3.5. 2nd RX:: right eye -2.5, left eye -3. Puzzling. At this point I'm very annoyed but always give the benefit of the doubt that perhaps the first time they accidentally emailed me the wrong RX, so I continued on for the contact exam fitting and pick out frames/glasses. I come back a week later and receive contacts and my frames. Everything seems fine at first and then I realize wow my vision is still not 20/20.... after.all.this. At this point, I got to a new optometrist uptown- and basically start all over with an eye exam that I hope to be CORRECT and my last for the 2011 year. I show him my contacts RX as well as my glasses from my last visit at Eye Solutions.. and lo and behold: they SWITCHED the lenses in my glasses so that the stronger lenser was on the right side of the frame and vice versa.....basically complete opposite of the contacts. UGH. Simply, DON'T go unless you want to lose a lot of money and time, only for them to have "no record" for reimbursement. read more

The selection of eyewear here (Chinatown) is amazing. I was searching specifically for a light peach colored frame and Steve and another young salesman provided me with so many choices. I finally settled on an Oliver Peoples frame and needed an eye exam. Unlike other optical stores, the charge was only $25 (since I was buying the frames). The waiting area offered free wifi, fruit, chips, water, coffee, phone chargers. Everyone here, from the salesman, the optician, and the adjuster (John) were very professional and pleasant. I had to come back because one of the stems was a little tight. This was not a problem. Went here to get an opinion regarding contacts & prescription. The place is very unprofessional and service was horrible. The optometrist kept walking in and out during my visit, in the end did not feel at all confident in what was being stated and had to leave without accomplishing anything during this visit. Created a Yelp account just to compliment this business! Just got back from getting an eye exam and buying some glasses. The person whom I dealt with was very patient, took her time, and was helpful when finding frames. Pertaining lenses, I mentioned to her that I often have trouble when buying polycarbonate lenses because chromatic aberration (color fringing) has always been an issue for me with the higher index materials. Though she didn't know what I was referring to, I asked her if I would really see any difference in lens thickness with the cheapest CR39 plastic lenses (known to have less chromatic aberration) for my prescription (-3.00). She was honest and told me I would probably only see a 1mm difference and that considering the plastic frames I was buying, I wouldn't even notice a difference and encouraged me to go ahead with the cheaper lenses if I so chose it. She also never tried to push expensive frames on me. They supposedly have a good warranty on lenses where if you're not happy, they will change them for a different lens material if you're not happy, provided you pay the difference for the more expensive lenses. The glasses were ready in less than half an hour. I took a star away because I wasn't particularly happy with the optometrist. She did provide satisfactory service, but was just a touch rude and wasn't very willing to answer questions. I realize us customers can ask stupid questions (and maybe I did) but I felt like she was bothered when I would ask something. Regardless, I do recommend this business. It's a hidden gem of good service unlikely to be found in a city like NYC. read more

And for non-Chinese speakers, they all speak English fluently. - Their selection of glasses is one of the more vast selections you will find in Chinatown. They also have a store in Brooklyn so in total, their selection is rather extensive. - The storefront is more up to date and welcoming than the typical Chinatown standard. - Pricing actually works out better here. (I went to almost every optical store in the area to compare prices) They also take insurance, just call ahead to make sure they take your plan. - I've seen some of the Chinatown eye exams that were the equivalent of your DMV eye exam; don't worry, there's an exam room where you will get a thorough exam. - Flexible scheduling - no appointment is necessary and the wait isn't usually too long. It's always been a pleasant experience when I drop in and with exams, contacts and glasses, I end up having to make multiple visits. read more

Excellent eye exam and contact fitting--it was quick but not rushed, and the doctor made sure she gave me the exact prescription, letting me try on several different types of contact lenses for a comfortable fit. My review is long overdue. I have been going to Eye Solutions for years (close to 10 years maybe). Customer service has consistently been excellent. The knowledgeable and extremely courteous staff are always welcoming and efficient. The frame selections are superb. My first experience with Eye Solutions was as a walk-in customer with a broken Cartier frame that I needed repaired (I didn't even buy the frame from them) and without questions asked, repair was done on the spot. Wow! These guys are so amazing. I created a Yelp profile just to praise them. Awesome selection of high end frames and fantastic prices but their customer service is what is truly unbelievable. I purchased a pair of tom ford glasses 6 month ago. Their prices were far lower than any of the other chinatown opticians and they performed a new comprehensive eye exam for next to nothing even though I had no insurance. I only had to wait a few mins to see the optometrist and the new glasses were ready within an hour. I couldn't believe it. I have purchased many pairs of glasses in the past and have always had to return a few days later to pick them up. I usually get dinged for $50-75 for an eye exam since I dont have any insurance vision benefits. They were so incredibly nice, helpful and cheap that a few months later when my GF had lost a screw on a pair of her designer sunglasses we went back there to have them repaired. The glasses hadn't even been purchased there and they replaced the screw and repaired them on the spot FOR FREE! I lost my glasses yesterday and now live in Boston. I called them up and they happily faxed my prescription to my new optician. Highly reccomend!! read more
