A gentleman named Ramon dropped by in the morning and replaced both the sensors and electrical wiring within about 30 minutes for a very reasonable rate. The service was super professional, and Ramon tested the door multiple times to make sure the fix was done well (and that the optical safety sensor was shielded from the sunlight). It was quite a surprise to me that F&M was bought out by some company called GDI. Of course the 1 star tells you I'm not happy with the new company. In short, they are very overly priced. I had a snapped torsion spring that needed replacement. I called the number on the sticker that F&M left on the garage door. They refused to do estimates over the phone and insisted on sending a tech to take a look. That didn't sound good for me but I agreed since the estimate was free anyway. Keep in mind I did tell them F&M installed the door and that I am requesting a warranty repair. Tech got here and informs me I don't have a warranty. Apparently the F&M invoice didn't specifically warrant the spring so I am out of luck. I was disappointed but I was OK with that. Then he tells me the cost to replace two springs is $495. This sounded outrageous so I sent him off and decided to get a second opinion. Using the Yelp quote request system, I got 6 quotes. All quotes ranged from $290 - $350. Then, in the last few weeks, I had to replace another old garage door opener. I made a call to F&M. With the new owner, the customer service isn't the same. They've become high pressure about sales. I have used F&M a number of times over the years to repair my garage door and opener. I recommended them to a friend to replace his door and opener a number of years ago. When my opener broke again recently, I tried to contact F&M to schedule a visit to replace the opener and door. We scheduled a visit for a 4 hour timeframe on a weekday evening. F&M called near the end of the timeframe to let me know they would not be able to come. We rescheduled for the next day. F&M then called near the start of the timeframe to say they would not be available again, and wanted to reschedule for 3 days later. Either they are in such demand they do not need my business, or they are not able to effectively schedule their visits. I needed the rubber weather seal at the bottom of the garage door to be replaced because it was cracking and coming off at some spots. I contacted a few places on Yelp and got some estimates over the chat system. But F&M Garage Doors came out to do a free estimate in person and inspect the door. Since this door was about 15 years old and I've never had anything done to it there were other problems they found besides the weather seal. The rollers on the side were rattling, the side cable was rusted, and the spring at the top was starting to move from side to side. All these things had to be replaced. It wasn't cheap to do all this but I felt the price was reasonable and this work had to be done if I wanted to continue using my garage for years to come. The most important thing for me was that the work was done right the first time so I don't have to hire someone else in the near future and I felt F&M did that. The technician who did this job, Juan, was great. He pointed out all the problems and presented various options for doing the fixes. Called on a Sunday and he picked up the phone after 3 rings (I called a few other places, either no answer or had to call back multiple times before someone answered). 2. This guy was straight up about the work and was able to give me a quote not knowing if I was actually going to use him or not. 3. Talked to me with honesty and transparency. He couldn't make it out on Sunday (I called late in the day) but he offered to come out first thing in the morning (arrived 5:15am) and replaced two tension springs and was able to get the work done in about 30min. I called him and was frantic because I could not lift the garage manually (heavy insulated door, broken tension spring, not enough strength training) and my car was inside the garage, needing to be out by 6:00am on Monday for work. It seemed a bit high, but agreed since I thought it was a familiar company. I wasn't home and paid over the phone. It was about 20% higher than he quoted and I was in the middle of other things and just paid. I contacted the company when I was back home. I saw an additional labor price was added. I was then told labor is normal. I totally understand that. But labor needs to be part of the original estimate. It shouldn't be added on at the end. Both my husband was given a price and so was I over the phone and that price was NOT what we paid. What company adds on labor at the end as an additional fee? Apparently this one! My double car garage got jammed halfway open at an angle, so I spent the weekend trying to fix it (mistake), I ended up making things worse and was convinced that I'd need to a spend big bucks to have the entire door plus tracks replaced. After admitting defeat, I called F&M, they were at my house within 10 minutes, and told me they could replace the door if I wanted, but they also said they could probably salvage and repair the damage I had done. About a half hour later, the door was unjammed and all necessary parts were replaced. They even fixed several mistakes the previous owners made during the initial install which caused the original jam. All in all, my door was in better condition than before, and it only cost me a small fraction of what I was prepared to spend on replacement. I called called at 10am for a service call and was given an appointment 'window' from 2-5pm that afternoon. At around 12:30pm they called to cancel and reschedule for Sunday as their serviceman 'was stuck on an installation job' and would be able to make it. Okay, stuff happens and they gave me my choice of times for today ((Sunday). I selected 3-5pm as I had other commitments in the morning and early afternoon. At 4:11pm they cancelled again, using the same 'stuck on the job' excuse. When I tried to complain about how unacceptable it was that they cancelled on me twice, the 'scheduler' hung up me. I have never met a more unprofessional company. This company does not honor time frame windows and is extremely rude over the phone when asked about it. In terms of speaking to a manager, the manager (Michael Potter) doesn't take calls during the weekend (understood), but is "too busy" during the week to "make outbound calls to customers" because he "runs 7 companies" and if you call during the week you'll just "have to wait until he's finished" while on hold for him -- even though he's "too busy with conference calls". Shady business practices. I thought I'd give this place a call due to the overwhelming positive reviews. I spoke briefly to someone on the phone and asked if I could text photos/videos of my garage to get an over the phone estimate. The guy insisted on sending a technician out instead and said it would be free, so I agreed. I gave him my brother's number who was at home. Technician named John texted us saying he would be out there at 2:30, arrived at 2:50. Took a look and gave us an estimate and began writing out an invoice. He then tried to intimidate my brother and dad into paying him $40-50 for coming out to take a look and said it was boss that was making him. Technician had his boss on speakerphone who was complaining that he was paying his tech $28/hour to come out so we needed to pay him. My brother and dad refused and technician finally left. I then get a call from a blocked number who was the initial guy I spoke to who tried to get us again to pay for the free estimate that he offered. He lied and said that since his technician had to take out his tools to do the diagnosis, we owed him money. My brother said tech never took out his tools. This company is extremely shady. My garage door jammed Sunday afternoon and had called several garage door repair companies who either didn't return my call or couldn't get to me for their own reasons. I told them all my husband was out of town for work, I'm home with my kids and have a half open garage door to worry about all night. Even my awesome neighbors came over to try and help me out but they couldn't get it to budge. I finally dialed J&M Garage Doors and spoke with Fred. He was very polite and offered to call one of his technicians who just got off work for the day to see if he could swing by and at least help get my garage door closed for the night. He kept me on the phone until I had my appointment confirmed with his technician Dave. Dave ended up coming over about an hour later and he did get my garage closed. Dave was equally as polite as Fred and came out of his way to help my family out and it took about 30-45 minutes. My sister and I were shopping for quotes and we made contact with this business. They stated that there would be a free estimate since we were still considering other options. They sent a technician over and mind you he never pulls out any tools and didn't even look closely at the broken garage door motor. All I did was try to activate the garage mechanism and he listened to the noise it made. He gave us a quote of around $500 to replace everything or $600+ for a more premium set up. Ok that's fine, but as the technician is getting ready to leave he gets on the phone with "his boss" and his boss John was trying to get me to pay his technician $50 for coming out to see the garage. He stated that his technician "completed a diagnostic for us" by using tools to examine the garage which was a complete fabrication. He never even told us what is wrong and just said we had to replace the entire thing. It also contradicts the free estimate that he offered over the phone. John stated "I pay my techs $28/hour to drive around to do jobs so I need $50." He was insistent on getting the money over the phone and we had to tell him multiple times that we weren't going to pay him anything since it was supposed to be an estimate. He would not let it go and this was extremely unprofessional. Not sure if this adds value to the review but when they wrote me the quote on paper they gave me a sheet with the name of a different company "Anytime Garage Door Inc" and lists 4 names that this company used to go by. Why change the name of the business 4 times? That tells me they are running a shady operation and also they have terrible business practices. I ended up getting an estimate from another business who was a lot more pleasant to deal with and was honest about all of the costs. (The estimate was free by the way AND the second technician actually looked at the motor and gave us a variety of options to either repair or replace the motor. ) I highly suggest staying away from this company.
