They say "Don't sweat the small stuff!", but sometimes the "small stuff" turns out to be "somewhat bigger than small". I had rolled the trashcans out to the sidewalk on garbage night. I hit the "close door" button for the garage door, and started heading back upstairs. I got to the top of the stairs and heard a very loud sound of metal cracking. I ran back downstairs to see what was wrong. The garage door was completely closed, like normal. Nothing had fallen over anywhere in the garage. So I head back up thinking all was fine. About half an hour later my wife calls me from the driveway saying the garage door won't open. I ran down to try and open it. Hit the button to open the door, it raised about 1/3 of the way, then a loud beeping noise went off and the door lowered again. I tried the normal manual hand release cord (red one), but nothing happened. The door was stuck closed. It was 7:30 on a Tuesday night. I put in a call to my landlord. She found Rollit Garage Doors on Yelp. She reached owner Garrett Finkelman and Garrett rang me within 15 minutes to ask me to describe the situation and send pictures if possible. Garrett said "from what you're describing, it sounds like one of the springs broke. I started looking closely at the various components. I found what I assumed was the spring(s) and saw that one was clearly split in two pieces. I sent a pic to Garrett and he said "Yep! Broken spring!" My heart sank thinking it was gonna be a difficult repair that would take time because parts would need to be ordered. To my very pleasant surprise Garrett assured me he could get it fixed that very night, but I'd have to wait a bit because he was on another job. Garrett arrived at my place surveyed the situation, sized up the springs he'd need and went to his car which had several different sizes and types, including the very ones he would need to replace my broken springs. Garrett knocked out the job with speed, expertise, and precision. He wasn't even bothered that I stayed to watch. I was fascinated watching how the springs and other elements of the door lifting mechanism worked! Garrett didn't even mind questions.
