We were staying at the Hyatt around the corner from this location for a few weeks. Dropped in a couple of weeks ago out of sheer curiosity. The ladies greeted us with a taste of chocolate. We bought a few pieces and left. A pleasant experience for sure. Now this visit is the reason for the review. We dropped in to buy a couple of pieces of chocolate in our way back to the Hyatt. While we where standing in line waiting for our turn to pay when Ms. Idella invited us to pay at her register. Ms. Idella was absolutely delightful. She is what customer service should be everywhere. She chatted with us trying to figure out what kind of chocolates we liked. When we entered this store our purpose was to just buy a couple of pieces of candy like I stated earlier. Well Ms. Idella helped us realize what our true reason was for this store visit. Lol. We walked out of the store with a big bag of chocolates to bring back home. First of all - this is NOT See's candy, it's NOTan imitation of See's candy, it's FANNIE MAY. There is a world outside of the west coast folks. Fannie May is a Chicago institution since the 1920's. They have wonderful traditional chocolate candy - that is dee-licious. A few years ago, after bad management, they went out of business - luckily the brand and recipes were sold and they opened up some select retail outlets in high end areas as well as a strong online presence. Thank goodness they did - because I need some almond honey nougut, caramarsh, trinidads, and pixies on a semi-regular basis. When you walk into the Fannie May Chocolate Shop on Michigan and Wacker (store #152) in Chicago, they make you feel like you are a member of their family. You are made to feel welcomed immediately with a sample and an offer to help in any way they can. The customer service person Ms. Idella is fantastic. She offered me a sample of a new candy, and it was so good that I bought two pounds!! Great store, great selection and great customer service. We went to Fannie May twice during our recent visit to Chicago. We first went by to try their signature ice cream flavors. We initially tried the Pixie. It was good. The ice cream over powered by the pixies at certain points. But as a whole it was good. The second time we visited we bought chocolates to bring home as gifts. We also go the white chocolate raspberry flavor ice cream. The staff was really helpful and offered us samples of anything we asked. I would suggest trying the toffee flavor ice cream, we never got the chance to due to it being sold out. But we were told it was the most popular flavor. read more

We've been buying Fannie May candy for decades...Ever since FM was sold a few years back the candy has been declining in quality of taste. We purchased some pixies a week ago and the person serving us gave us a free small box of candy which was nice. So we tried the free candy which was pixies and it was terrible the carmel wasn't the same at all, the chocolate was hard and poor tasting. I'm hoping this isn't a new recipe for pixies, if it is then FM has lost a customer for good. I just received a coupon for 2 boxes of Pixies for $10 per box that ends in 2 days. I went to pick some up and they said they were out and maybe they would get some tomorrow. I asked if the boxes on sale was different than the Pixies sold in the counter, the lady said no they were not. So I said why don't you just weigh up 2 boxes. She said she didn't know if she could. So I called the main office and was told that the way it is, if they are out, tuff luck. This is more of a review for an online order I placed. I had some trouble with an online coupon that I found, and I called a few times to make sure that everything was okay. The first 2 representatives I talked to when I placed my order were really nice. However, they told me to call back about an hour after my order was placed because the transaction wouldn't show up until an hour later. When I eventually called a few hours later, a super rude lady picked up the phone. She basically insulted me, saying that I'm a liar and such. She kept interrupting me and she eventually hung up the phone when I asked for a manager. If it weren't for the living social coupon, I wouldn't have bought the stuff anyway. This is a difficult review for me. I can easily rate them 3 stars based on how they are currently, but at one time they were an easy 5 star business! So I settled for the middle and chose 4 (they earn a star for nostalgia). Fannie May was a true candy company years ago. I used to walk in and see the place full of candy that was made in Chicago either that same day or the day before. Then about 10 - 15 years ago they were bought out and the candy was made out of state somewhere and it lost it's old candy store feel. The store looks more corporate now. The trinidads are still my favorite and thankfully they still make them. However, they no longer make their famous hot cocoa powder. It was hands-down the best hot cocoa mix ever! I wish we had the original Fannie May candy company back. When we visit Chicago we still stop by this location and buy a couple of candies to reminisce, but it's not the same. At least we still have them. Better this than not having them at all. read more

They have friendly staff, convenient location for visitors staying at close-by hotels, and they gave me a sample when you walk in. For those who are familiar with See's, this place is similar in that they were both founded around the same time and offers old-fashioned chocolates. Having grown up eating See's, I was surprised when the midwestern relatives turned me on to Fanny May and I found myself preferring these sugar bombs. The chocolates are sweet but very soft and well flavored. I have heard that the ice cream is amazing-chocolate mint meltaway was my mom's happy pick. We just happened to stop by during a walk in the city. We walk in and are warmly greeted by the store manager and one of its employees. She comes around the corner with a glorious tray of white chocolates to our surprise they're stuffed with apricots! I frequent this location often and I have NEVER walked away disappointed. But what is even more incredible than the chocolate, are the people behind the counter. They are friendly, eager to assist, and very knowledgeable about their products. They have a tendency to go beyond being merely "helpful"; for instance, when an item is sold out, they offer to call me as soon as it comes back in stock. Special kudos to Kinyetta Coleman! From time to time, I have visited this location with my developmentally challenged friend, and Ms. Coleman has been especially patient and kind to her. I tried to use online coupon codes for purchasing Fannie May candy to ship as a gift. Every coupon code failed. Reasons were various: this coupon does not apply to what you have ordered, this product is out of stock. I spent at least an hour on line and on the phone with representatives form FAnnie May including a supervisor and a corporate representative. One of the coupon codes was AARP which also provides discounts through 1 800 flowers which sells Fannie May. The site said the discount did not apply. I like the chocolate but it's not worth this hassle. I think it's false advertising and I won't do business with either fannie May or 1-800 flowers again. read more

When I read the store name "Fannie May" on my walk home last week, I was amused as I thought of the federal mortgage giant, Fanny Mae, but misspelt for whatever reason. It was quite a surprise when I looked closer and noticed it was a chocolate and candy store. I often find these boutique chocalitiers rather pretentious and overpriced; but most times, regardless of those traits, the chocolate is impeccable. Fanny May is no exception. Expensive chocolate but great various and delicious flavors! The rich and creamy chocolate is delightful. I recommend their dark and extra dark chocolate bars, as well as the fudge squares, and the dark chocolate mint and caramel candies. They gummy bears are also lighter and tastier than I'm used to. I could not have written this review any sooner. It is shocking to see how this store does not have a review of 5 stars. This is a wonderfully elegant and classy store with a very well mannered and joyful staff. I have been several times throughout my stay in Chicago and every time I am more impressed by how polite the staff is and how AMAZING the chocolate and for a reasonable price. Even when I was there after closing hours for a solid 15 minutes, the staff made me feel very comfortable and never rushed me out. The staff always greets the customers with a smile and ALWAYS offer amazing samples of their chocolates. I was lucky enough to come when they were giving out the candy apple chocolate(that one tastes exactly like an apple pie, it makes me salivate just thinking about it). So after talking to the staff and stuffing my face in chocolate, I finally bought a box of chocolates which they gift wrapped FOR FREE. FREE!! Now the wrapping was very pretty and looked professional and you cant beat the price of free. So to sum up what I have said: 1. The staff is amazing, well mannered, and overall great to talk to. 2. The chocolates taste so silky and delicious and they are at a reasonable cost. 3. The staff gives out amazing samples with a smile. :) 4. Gift wraps the chocolate for free. If you do not visit here while in Chicago, you are truly missing a valuable and wonderful experience. This store is what defines Chicago: polite, charming, and a classic. read more
