I try to avoid superlatives and absolute statements. Also, records, like Michael Phelps' 18 year 200 meter butterfly, were meant to be broken. Now, your tastes may be different, YMMV, but there is a new pizza and salad king in my book as of 11:15am today! Last place on the street I'd walk into, but, it was recommended by my service advisor while my car was being serviced. And to think, I almost went to Jack in the Box, Taco Bell, Kalico Kitchen, Carl's Jr. and other places I like and walked right by. (Hang on, it's coming...) Pizza. There is no bad pizza. A Little Caesar's $5 pepperoni is worth the price. Gina's in Newport Beach in the high end of the price spectrum, is fabulous. But the new title holder, for me, is Farm Star Pizza, 2359 The Esplanade, Chico, CA. I've gobbled pizza in Italy, Chicago, New York, and dozens of famous pizza places around the globe. But Farm Star is the best I personally have ever eaten!!! I ate the pickled beet salad and Meatsie personal pizza. And that's all I'm going to say. The pizza is to die for! The crust is amazing and all the toppings feel very gourmet. Always a go-to for an amazing and consistent pizza. And the salads and appetizers!! The only thing holding me back from giving 5 stars is the price of the food. Two pizzas and a beer cost $50. Channing Tatum should have served and fed me that pizza for that price. It was strange that the bathroom is outside, around the corner, through the kitchen, down the stairs in the basement around another corner and through two more doors. With all the positive reviews for Farmstar, and having heard this place was run by the same people who own the consistently excellent Red Tavern, I was eager to give it a try. I'll spare you any magniloquent expose on my visit and will leave it at this: When paying full service prices, I expect the following: Clean plates and silverware (water stains are ok, but remnants of the last diner's meal are not), At least one visit from the servers to ask if we need anything (especially when we're the only guests in the place), and a refill on my iced tea would be a nice touch. Hopefully, we just had a bad experience because we didn't get any of these things. One tip, which the waitress did not share with us, although they are calling them "personal sized" pizzas, they're enough for 2 if you opt for a salad. read more

I went here recently on a trip to the Yo-yo Museum, and I really wish I had eaten somewhere else. On the plus side, Farm Star was super cheap and the food was fresh. Unfortunately, the restaurant was dirty and rundown-looking, the service was very average, and the food wasn't all that great. The salad was bordering on gross, though it would have been better with more dressing choices. The lettuce was full of hard chunks and stems, and they didn't seem to have a mild dressing on the menu - everything was very much "love it or hate it"...and I wasn't loving any of it. The pizza was alright, but I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to buy it again. It wasn't bad enough to NOT eat it, but I definitely didn't leave feeling happy about the lunch. If you like traditional pizzas with crusts that aren't crunchy and "normal" toppings, don't come here. You'll be disappointed. On the other hand, if you like "California cuisine" with atypical toppings and super thin, crispy crusts, you'd probably appreciate this place. And yes, like some of the other reviewers have mentioned, a single pizza is enough for two people (unless someone in the pair is a major overeater). Okay, so I'm trying to come up with one word that describes the pizza at Farm Star. Amazing? Unexpected? Ethereal? Over-the-Moon (do the hyphens make that one word?) I've given up and now just string them all together. I'm a bona fide total pizza snob. My personal "world's best" pizzeria is a tie between Tony's Pizza Napoletana in SF (you know, Tony Gemignani, the guy that's won the World Pizza Cup championship in Naples and pretty much every pizza contest there's been elsewhere. Repeatedly. Look him up.) and a little joint in the small, car-free Alpine village of Wengen, Switzerland called Pizzeria da Sina. (Good luck getting THERE any time soon.) So who would know that here, right in our Chico town, there's pizza that rivals Tony's and Sina's? And why have I just found out about Farm Star? The crust is amazing. It's "thin-ish" -- not cracker thin that chars on the bottom and shatters when you bite into it -- but a yummy toothsome thin with most excellent texture and flavor. The tomato sauce is good and tomatoe-y without being overly sharp or spiced. Perfectly cheesed. Long list of toppings for us 'make your own' types. My proscuitto + tons of arugula was perfect. Hubby had the Hawaii 5-0 which was out of this world. Salads are piled WAY high with fresh ingredients. They are monstrous. Order one to share with a dining companion. Or two Did I mention that all the produce comes from Chico's Farmers Market? Well, that's how I found out about Farm Star. I was waiting in line at a produce stand and noticed a fellow with a whole wagon chock full of leeks and green onions. Who needs a wagon full of leeks and green onions? So I asked his story. Turns out it was Tim who, together with his wife, own and are the chefs at Five Star. I figured anyone that spends THAT much money on produce for a pizzeria has gotta know what he's doing. He does. It was not so bad. I was concerned. About broccoli or chicken or rosemary being the only options on my pizza and I was wrong. They do offer a perfectly normal cheese pizza, so... The guy totally FUBAR'd the order. Like bad. I think he thought my girlfriend and I were really hot, because, you know, we are AND he was all flustered and we found it amusing. But he was nice enough, whatever.... Do what you do. We ended up scoring a free pizza, so, no complaints here. This was our first time eating here and it was delicious. The sweet heat was savory with a gourmet twist. The pizza had a brick oven taste and the coleslaw on top was a tangy compliment. The root beer float was excellent because the root beer they use is one is the best. The creme brûlée was soo luscious and the biscotii was toasted to perfection. Visiting friends in Chico for the new year and found this place was open today, the food and service was perfect. We entered and said we had not eaten here before. The lady behind the counter explained their menu with a friendly attitude. We sat down at a table and played hangman with the chalk. You can write on the table tops with the chalk. Our sweet heart salad arrived and it was fresh lettuce with a tasty dressing. The pizza was a Classico and a pepperoni for our boys. This place makes their own dough and you can tell. The crust of the pizza was a perfect consistency and had a nice flavor to it. The dough was coked all the way through. The pizza is a one size only that will feed two people. This is the most family friendly place in Chico. I was stoked to find they have delicious food, too! The service is excellent and our experience was totally a positive one. There's a customer-friendly piano, super chill atmosphere, and tables upon which you can draw. My friend's nearly 2 year old had a blast drawing with chalk and the other couple of families that were there had great fun rearranging chairs and playing the piano. The staff not only didn't roll their eyes, but they were attentive to needs like highchair requirements, etc. Such a great family place! My friends and I ordered the meatballs and baked brie wedge for appetizers (both great). We ordered two types of pizza - the Up North and The Pig & The 'Shroom (both amazing), a Green Goddess salad (amazing, actually my fav part), and literally every dessert. I recommend the cheesecake or the brownie as the chocolate cake was SO rich and the carrot cake was dry and crumbly. The apple pie is a solid "meh." The customer service was attentive and so upbeat. The atmosphere can be kinda loud, but it's actually a good thing if you have a rowdy toddler who likes to sing. I enjoyed a meal at farm star with my boyfriend and his father and it was quite delicious. We got two different types of pizza and a salad. The service was very good. It was an order and pay at the front counter deal, you get your own water and they bring the food out when it is ready. I felt it slightly odd that it was a order/pay at the counter when you are definitely paying sit-down/served prices. I enjoyed some of the small touches that they used to make the place quirky such as the ground-down wine bottles as drinking glasses and the chalk board table tops. Both of the pizza's were excellent. I don't specifically recommend the potato pizza (kind of odd flavor), but it was original and fresh none the less. The crust was perfect, just as delicious as Celestino's crust but with a different twist. As for the sallad, we weren't sure if it was underdressed or if they had just completely forgotten to dress it. This was very disappointing as we paid around eight or nine dollars for the sallad alone. Over all it was pretty good, but it could have been better. read more

First of all let me say the people were nice and the food was good (very pricey but good). I'm not a fan of "weird" pizza but they have the normal stuff too and it was very tasty. The reason this is a 3 star review is because I wanted to use a Visa Gift Card to pay for our dinner and their system would not take it. I can use that card in probably 99% of stores and restaurants but not there? If that's because of the software/cash register system they have then that's a huge problem. So I had to charge my $110 bill on my credit card since already ordered our food and had starting drinking our beers. So if I ever to decide to go back here I know I can't use gift cards which is surprising. read more

Tasty pizza... poor service. Called in an "eat-in" order. Was told it would be ready in 30 minutes. Showed up exactly 30 minutes later. Was 3rd person in line but took over 10 minutes to reach the counter. Paid for pizza, including tip based on their tablet system. Was told it would be another 6 minutes. 20 minutes later, I inquired about the status of my pizza. They said it would be another 3 minutes (which turned into 15 minutes). They didn't even start making it until I paid claiming that they wanted to make sure I was actually going to show up. In that case, it probably would have been better not to tell me it would take 30 minutes. Also, their subsequent 6 and 3 minute estimates were way off and seemed like just an attempt to placate me. Ultimately, we got our order over an hour after ordering. Pizza was good. Although the pizzas and not too pricey, the amount you get per pizza is kind of small. My wife, my 2 year old and I ate 2 entire pizzas ($30) and we are not big eaters. I also recommend NOT tipping before getting your order. I believe tipping should still be based off of the quality of service (old fashioned idea, I know). I would not have tipped what I did after receiving the service that I received. read more
