Came here for solace after a broken heart and going through the usual motions of recovery i.e getting a new look. My barber was Allie and she was super cool about giving me a new look even though I didn't really know what I was going for. I basically said to her, "What can you do with this glop of hair?" The best part about the service was that Allie acknowledged my wavy hair. I think this is the kind of detail someone trained in hair art should definitely pick up on. I'm really proud of my wavy hair that I inherited from a long line of wavy haired Filipinos and I'm so glad that Allie looked at this and incorporated it into her strategy. We go to Fellow Barber every time we come to the city for my 2 year old son's haircuts. They are so good with him, patient and kind, and allow him to sit on my lap and still are able to give him a great cut. Not a big yelp reviewer, but when I get great customer service I make sure it gets recognized. I've worked food, retail, and service in general. Things go wrong. Appointments are late, orders are wrong, it happens. How you recover is as much a part of great service as avoiding the mistake. Tonight, there was a bit of hiccup with my appointment. Once one gets past the front desk and into a chair the experience at FSC improves. I've been a patron of FSC since you opened. I live a block from your location so, initially, your no appointment -no phone call policy was, meh, okay. I appeal for you to reconsider your no appointment policy -it may work for you but I just don't get it. I cannot think of one visit where the desk did not disappoint -feigning interest in service is not even attempted here. True to form, today I went in for a cut and was met with more of the same desk indifference. I did not get a cut bc I missed the magic, unspoken, super secret Sunday schedule. Still trying to figure that one out. Before putting fingers to keys I thought...maybe it's me. Of the 40 Yelp reviews that show on the first page of reviews, eighteen (18) of them voiced similar experiences. FSC...that's 45% of your customers asking you to change a policy that clearly does not work. Needless to say but I will, if one can figure out the puzzle of actually getting into a chair, it's a win. read more

I've had some bad haircuts in my time, which makes the service I got at Fellow all the more outstanding by comparison. I'm still learning the beard game and went to Adam for a beard trim. He did a wonderful job listening to my ideas (which included Instagram photos of beards I admire) and translating them into reality. I really wanted to like this place, but had a terrible experience this morning. I **had** long curly hair, hadn't cut if for like 6 months and told the barber (Chang) I just wanted to cut it a bit and give it a bit of shape, also showed him a picture of about how long I wanted it. He says he is going to cut two inches (looks reasonable when he shows what he is going to do), then after a while I realize he just kept cutting and gave me a "short short" cut, on the sides and back about what you get when you do a 5 on the machine. When I point out this is way shorter than we agreed he just told me "yes but you look better like this, it was very messy". Right, messy like I wanted it to be. Had chosen Chang because I read some good comments about him here and he was a very pleasant person, but stay away if you don't want a short cut. read more

My good friend works at this place and unfortunately I've had to stop seeing him, even though he is a miracle worker. The haircut price is a bit pricey at $40 a pop so i've opted for something a little more affordable. The thing that really irks me about this place is their customer service and appoinment policies. 1. You can't call in to make an appointment (stupid!), you're expected to walk in and have your name put on a list for which there is usually a 1-3hr wait, not joking. So it's usually a several hour to half day task to get your cut here. 2. The front desk people are kinda not so friendly hipster types with a bit of an attitude. 3. During my last haircut a stylist came up to us and really started commenting and literraly pointing and dabbing at my hair on what my firend was doing wrong with my haircut, but not exactly trying to help. It seemed more of a ploy to undermine him. Another guy then stepped in and offered to "help" and in the end I left with a pretty shitty cut. Walking down Valencia saw a barber shop open where I think a high end pet store used to be. I think what the hell, I'm here and walk in. First mistake. Do not go to a barber that looks nice. Barbershops don't look nice. Beauty salons look nice. A barbershop should look sort of well used and run down...like a rec room or a den or a VA hall. A barbershop shouldn't look like they had a interior decorator do it up. Sit down look around. Wooden paneling. Antiques and a glass display counters. Second mistake. Barber shops have pictures. Pictures of the family. Pictures signed by athletes. Pictures of fishing and hunting trips and vacations. And they have art projects from the kids/grandkids and crazy souvenir from the trip back to the old country. And Sport Illustrated and Car Mags and hidden on the top shelf some 20 year old Playboys. Then I look at the barbers. Tattoo'd hipsters. Third mistake. Barbers are working men. They are there to do a job, cut hair. They don't look like they spent hours getting just the right ironic look. If they have tattoos it's from the military or prison. Barber drive cars not ride fixie bikes. Then I look at the prices on the board. Holy Crap! $40 for a haircut. Fourth Mistake. A haircut doesn't cost more than dinner. No f'ing way. Sure ladies pay $40 for a hairstyle, but than again they're ladies. Only time I paid $40 for a haircut was in Asia and it came with "special service". Hipster guy says, "Can I help you?" I say, "No thanks". I walk out thinking this is what's wrong with society today. Men don't know what it's like to be a man. Men today have never been around real men. They've been raise by women. And the only thing they know about being a man is some made up BS they see on TV. Customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I have been a customer since the day the shop opened. I have been very happy with the cuts as well as the supplies. I've had some frustration with customer service in the past, but today took the cake. I was just there standing in the rain and first in line when they opened. The hostess took my name and I requested Sarah. Instead of getting me in with my requested barber they let a friend of the barber skip ahead in line and made me wait effectively as if I was last in line. I was surprised to see that Sarah called Sean (the guy behind me in line) before me, and it was after all other seats were filled with folks in line after myself and Sean. When I asked the hostess why I was waiting after everyone else, she said that Sean told her he was first and I was second. Since we both requested Sarah, he went first and I had to wait while everyone else in line were seated in a chair. I asked her how was that possible, she saw that I was first. She then said she didn't want to take sides and she let Sarah the barber decide who to cut first. I was flabbergasted. I also noted that several of the employees said hi to Sean while we were waiting and he is clearly a friend of the stylist and others that work at FSC. I had to leave as I could not wait 90 minutes for a haircut especially when I should have been done in 30. I advise you stay away as customer service is not a priority, serving friends first apparently is. read more

Really tried to like this place, followed a barber from his last spot. The lack of customer service is appalling. No appointments and assholes at the front counter "welcoming" you is a complete turn off. No haircut is worth the frustration of dealing with them, for $40 and impossible parking you would think an appointment would be the least they could offer. The young lady who trimmed my beard wouldn't even clean up my neck when she was finished, '"Well, you're just going home to shower it off anyway, right?" She was selling me some line about 'all the beard styles these days...' - Too typical for this city these days- establishments seduce you with a seemingly authentic stylization of a place, which turns out to be in proportion to the lack of quality, care, customer service, and experience of staff. I hate this place so much. The appointment policy must have been created by an unemployed ironically bearded hipster on Molly. So you cannot make an appointment in advance. You can, however do two things... 1. Wait in line with other ironically bearded hipsters at 9am to score a first chair or then join the wait list that gets you anywhere from a 30 minute wait time to 5-6 hours depending on the day. 2. Use the online wait list which puts you in line after the real line waiters, so hours and hours. Which in a way is like an appointment if you have nothing planned in your day. So who is this place gear towards? Hipsters. Clearly. Everything about it screams "we're so cool and if you get that, you can be cool too." And it seems that hipsters have very flexible days. Because who has the time to wait in lines for a chance at a haircut or to bend your day around the chance of a haircut. Must be that hipsters are very unemployed people. We all know that people in San Francisco love to wait in line. We do it for every restaurant our coworkers have told us is decent. We have no problem idling away for hours in search of the next great preparation of stinging nettles and fernet (whatever that is). So it's clear that this is the next frontier. Damn the technology of an appointment book. That's so Seattle, or Denver. No, join Fellow Barber in the revolution of free-ball haircuts! Quit your job and line up people. If you're lucky enough to get a 5 hour wait you can always hit up Craftsman and Wolves for an egg hidden in a muffin or BetaBrand to buy an emoji-poo shirt. And the haircuts? Clipper cuts with the benefit of hipster style. So, on par wit my old Italian barber in the 70s, without the hipster part. But my 10-year old kid likes it. And he's picky. And he doesn't have a job...And will probably be a hipster someday. read more

We live 1 hour and 45 minutes from the city. My boyfriend likes to come here. They don't take appointments. That's fine. We come down and always have to wait an hour. So we plan that. We came down last week and was told 3 of their barbers called in sick. And they were booked. I asked if they could do something and explained how far we drove to come. They did not care. I grew up in the tri state area and hate customer service in SF. They should have tried to squeeze us in. The worst part is the barber was standing there waiting for the next person on the list who had walked away. They should have offered an incentive for us to come back. I walk by this shop every morning on my way to work and looked forward to seeing it come together over the past month. The reclaimed wood, hardware and antique furnishings add to the comfortable feeling you get upon being greeted by any of f.s.c's members. As one of the earlier reviewers mentioned, as a guy you do receive a "dry cut". But getting a shampoo and post-cut rinse isn't what this place is all about. f.s.c. hearkens back to the days of Bogart, Gable, Cagney. It's about looking forward to going into a traditional American men's hangout, reading a newspaper while you wait your turn and getting a nice, clean, classic scissor cut from somebody who feels like an old friend-- somebody with whom, once a month, you can talk freely about drinking, baseball, women. And, if that's all I experienced during my visit, I would have been completely satisfied. I was ready to get up from the chair when my barber Dan treated me to a herbal, mentholated hot towel that he masterfully wrapped around my face leaving just enough room for my nose to inhale all of the sinus-clearing goodness. A flawlessly executed straightedge neck cleaning capped off a perfectly spent lunch break. Was it worth 40 bucks? You're damn right it was. read more
