Fern Barn is my favorite restaurant in the Barlow! Whenever my girlfriends and I are all in town we are always making a stop here. Everything on the menu is amazing but our overall favorites are the Umami Bomb, Chicken Tenders, and Fries. I seriously crave the umami bomb like once a week. One of my friends is Gluten Free and we appreciate the options Fern Barn has to offer! We sat at the "window bar" at the back of the restaurant and I was concerned about getting good service there but our waiter was very attentive. - Cocktails: this place has great cocktails. We got three and all were so different and great: Mint condition, Neighbors bounty, Smoke & mirror - Pulled beef bun: absolutely loved it! The bun was tasty, the beef had great flavor and the sauce was just sooo good - reduced, rich and super flavorful. - Num numb wings: another great dish. The wings were very crispy with great flavor. The roasted sichuan peppers were crispy and fun to bite. The pickles jalapeños were also fun. That said, if you don't like spicy, you will still enjoy the wings. read more

I've lived in Sebastopol for over 25 years and was excited to see Fern Bar open in the Barlow. But after now having tried it twice I will never go back and will discourage anyone I know from patronizing them. Worst customer service ever. Failure to greet us as we come in, dismissive, just plain not friendly. We've tried everything in the Barlow and eaten at most of the restaurants in Sebastopol and have never had this poor service anywhere. It's not too much to think the staff would greet customers as they come in with a friendly "Hello, welcome. We'll be right with you." It's basic restaurant etiquette 101 and Fern Bar fails. read more

The ambiance and overall vibe were great, and the drinks were good--$16 per cocktail felt expected for this type of place. Our main issue was with the food value and service. We ordered the onion dip for $19, which set fairly high expectations, but the portion was surprisingly small. There were only about ten chips, and once we finished them, there was still a significant amount of dip left. When we asked for a few additional chips so we could finish the dip, we were charged $9 for extra chips, bringing the total to $28 for onion dip alone. On top of that, the experience felt rushed. We were repeatedly asked if we were done, which made us feel pressured to leave rather than welcome to enjoy the space. I love this place! The atmosphere is always so nice and not to mention it's beautiful inside. The staff are welcoming and very helpful. 100% come for their amazing drinks. They have so much variety and fun twists to classic drinks. They even have mock tails! As for the food, I say it's so-so depending on what you get. Some were hits and a lot were misses. Came here for a birthday dinner and the total price sure added up. They do auto gratuity over a certain amount. We sat outside and it was fine not too cold with the heaters on. I will say the outside is pretty casual and seemed like plastic tables and chairs so I wouldn't recommend it if you can sit inside. The inside is much cuter, chic and definitely a better vibe. I ordered the cod with clam chowder and I wished it was actually separate. The chowder was a bit too salty for me, cod was cooked perfectly but the two together seemed a little random. Hard to say exactly what kind of food this is because it leans towards Modern American however it seems like there are some asian influences. Something that surprised me was the kimchijeon or kimchi pancake, its smaller than the classic korean pancake but also a very delicious topping and crisp, highly recommend checking this out. We went last Sunday to the Fern Bar for the first time. I don't think they have the full amount of staff yet, after Covid. We enjoyed our food and drinks, and the atmosphere, but the service was really, really slow. We ordered two fried chicken sandwiches. They were tasty but, the potato bun doesn't last until your finished with the sandwich. I ended up cutting it up and just eating the last 1/3 of the sandwich as the bun fell apart. We had ordered beignets, they forgot to bring them, so we had to remind them, it would have been better to just bring them with the sandwich's. The restaurant is also rather noisy, sometimes it was hard to hear for a conversation. read more

I absolutely loved the savory umami Bomb which is shiitake mushrooms with crispy broccolini and crispy and yet chewy rice! This is the bomb! For the spam and egg the spam is house made, with kimchi, scrambled eggs, cilantro and black sesame seeds. A super 2nd contender. The Trout Toast was also a super 2nd contender with fresh smoked trout with caper, greens, creme freshe, pickled shallot over sourdough. I drank the Froze All Day with Leghorn Rose, Charbay vodka, guava, lemon and hisbicus. Service was perfect. I liked that there was natural sunlight throughout the restaurant with hanging plants that gave it an earthy feel. The only con was the bathrooms was super dark and unwelcoming. Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon for brunch. We were seated immediately in a cute bookshelf alcove next to the piano. The space itself was gorgeous and featured a lot of plants and antique like decorations. Service was quick and friendly. We ordered The Greens salad ($19), smoked fish on toast ($26), and the aged fries ($13) to share. For drinks we ordered the Float like a Butterfly, Thai and Dry, and the Strawberry Feels. Top notch food, cocktails and ambience! Came by on a Saturday at 5pm and was fortunate to score one of the last open tables! We ordered a round of cocktails and halibut crudo and the tofu and fried chicken plates to share. The share plates are very generous, and ended up being more than enough for dinner for two. Their cocktails are works of art! Simply stunning to behold, and also absolutely delicious. My expectations were high after seeing their libation-creations on Instagram, and they delivered. We ended up ordering another round of cocktails just to explore some more of their flavor combinations! We tried the Creamsicle, Long island tea, Kyoto Sour and the frozé, and I would happily repeat any of the above! The Creamsicle was my personal favorite; it came with the tiniest boba I have ever seen for garnish! And the interior is wicked cute. Lots of ferns (as you would imagine with a name like the "Fern Bar") but also some eclectic taxidermy birds, wall paper and industrial chic A fun space to come hang out and savor the entire experience. The cocktail menu featured many of my favorites, and I couldn't resist trying the Pisco Sour, which was absolutely amazing--perfectly balanced with a smooth, frothy texture. For brunch, we ordered the New Mexican Breakfast, which turned out to be my favorite dish. It had bold flavors and a comforting, hearty feel. Came here for Saturday brunch after reading an article in Sonoma Magazine regarding their mocktails! Spirit-free drinks are slowly becoming popular as more restaurants and bars adopt it creating their own concoctions of colorful, delicious drinks for non drinkers. Service was excellent all around. We started off with the Thai & Dry and the West Country 75. Loved the Thai & Dry so creamy! We ordered the greens with fried chicken, smash burger with fries and the cinnamon sugar beignets (comes with a side of Gravenstein apple dip!!) I love suggesting this place when meeting with my friends due to the ambience. I've visited countless times and I've never found faults in the service or food. We sat outside since we were in our cycling gear so we can't speak much to the interior ambiance but we sat out on the little bar ledge on a nice sunny Sunday and had a nice meal. I've been here a few times prior and only had okayish experiences. Decor is cute, it's got trendy drinks, but beyond than that there was nothing much to stand out. I just remembered this place being nice to get some drinks, but as far as food it was overpriced, had little options to choose from, with everything was in small portions. So while drinks are great, it was definitely more of a cocktail bar than a dinner place, but that is fair considering the name. However, since it's also basically a restaurant, I just wished they expanded on their food offerings more. But I have to say, after this last visit I was very pleasantly surprised! The drinks were great (all except the Fern Bargarita, which I felt was a bit basic compared to the others) but more importantly I was very pleased with the food! The trout was delicious, with perfectly crisp skin, and soaked in this flavorful green curry sauce. My hesitations from the past had always been that the food was expensive but small portioned, and didn't astonishingly stand out enough to justify the prices. While I still think everything is expensive with small portions, I enjoyed the food a lot more this time! Our group also got the burger and roasted chicken which I got to try as well and both were equally delicious as the trout as well. read more

Gwen bar never disappoints. The greatest of craft cocktails so high above all others. New dish "Autumn Blossom" was so wonderful. As a vegetarian, I don't see such highly composed dishes. It's killer to get the dabs of sauces and meticulously created meals. It's a joy I've longed for. For decades. Sadly the umami bomb has gone downhill, brought my friend who asked if it was rice forward and our sweet waitress made the mistake of saying no. It was pretty much all rice w some mushrooms and broccolini. Our server didn't even notice that she didn't eat it. Not the best intro for new diners. I had it before and it never looked like this. I think the kitchen is bored of making it and if so perhaps it's time to retire it rather than half doing it. Presentation was a let down too.
