Pretty bad experience. Party of 6 with a reservation in a cabana right at 5 pm when they opened. Arrived at 4:56 pm and the door to the reception was locked while the hostesses were right inside. We waited (with 2 elderly) in the cold until 5pm before they unlocked the door. We got to our cabana timely and ordered appetizers and the tasting menu. Kyle, our server was nice. Appetizers came right out along with drinks. First course then came out. All was good. Then the waiting began. It took almost 40 minutes for the next course. I had to go hunt down Kyle to ask what was up. He said he would check with the kitchen. Most of the rest of the courses came out fairly timely (but not fast enough) with the exception of dessert. They brought us chilled spoons and then we didn't see the dessert for 30 more minutes. Kyle was somewhat apologetic. At the end the manager came to aplologize. Said the kitchen just got slammed. Not sure how since we were the first reservation of the night. She told me she took a round of drinks off the bill. When I checked the receipt, she had actually only taken off 2 glasses of wine. That was $22 out of a bill of over $950. The food was good, but not as good as the last time we came. Compares below other tasting menu's we've done lately. This restaurant was the best meal on my recent trip to Virginia. The service was great and the menu farm to table with an eclectic lean. To start I had the parsnip soup with coconut milk which was a little thin but really fresh vibrant flavors. For mains I split the Shrimp Po Boy and shrimp and grits with my fella. I really liked the shrimp and grits and would definitely recommend ordering that; my boyfriend also really liked it. The Po Boy on the other hand was a split decision. My boyfriend really liked it. I didn't really care for the sandwich or the side of quinoa salad it was served with. Even with that dish being a miss for me, I still recommend eating here and would be back again if in the area. read more

This post is strictly for takeout. After reading reviews of how good their Wagyu burgers were I had to try it. I NEVER order a burger when eating out because 10/10 times I will prefer my own burger that I make at home on the grill. This one was good. Would I drive 30 min to pick it up and eat it? No. Would I recommend it if you also have heard about it and want to test it out? Sure- go for it. You won't know until till you try it yourself. The cornbread pudding- everyone in the family agreed- No Bueno. It has like a weird aftertaste to it. Is there sour cream in it? Not sure what it is but it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Would definitely not recommend this. Try something else. Best of luck. I'm sure the other finer dishes in the menu for the sit down meals are better....(?) I have been hearing about Field & Main for the longest time, and its reputation is warranted! One of the most creative meals I've had in Virginia by far. We came for dinner on a Saturday night. The restaurant is located in a charming house with outdoor seating available. Parking was a little difficult to find, especially at night, but there was ample space behind neighboring buildings. We ended up eating inside, and it felt like being in a cozy living room. Even though there are separate rooms, it could be quite loud at times due to multiple birthday celebrations that took place. The service was accommodating and enthusiastic. My party opted for the a la carte menu, ordering the bison tartare for our appetizer, duck and bison entrees for our main course, and ending our meal with the feast chocolate chip cookie for dessert. Everything was cooked to perfection and plated beautifully. The duck leg had an amazing crispy skin and the bison was oh so tender. The cookie was massive and super decadent. The entrees especially were very creative. However, the duck dish was less cohesive than the others, as the peanut sauce completely overpowered the dish, and the pear did not add much to the flavor profile. This review is way overdue! I've been drafting it since October! We are in the outdoor cabanas for our anniversary. It was truly magical! We decided to opt for the present menu (79 per person). It's constantly rotating with the seasons, and by that, I mean it rotates to the point that we got a special paw paw ice cream from a tree that's only in season one week a year! Back then, the cabanas were open air, but it looks like since then, they have further finished them so that they could accommodate guests in the winter. Their ability to pivot through the pandemic and continue offering a fantastic menu is truly inspiring. The staff knows this food inside and out. They are truly passionate about what they do, and they did an amazing job accommodating for dietary restrictions. The menu items are completely creative and one of a kind. With the present menu, you'll never face exactly the same experience twice, because they are only serving the freshest ingredients that they can get from local farms. The appetizers (carrot and ginger soup and squash "ribs") were outstanding as was the side dish of bread pudding with the meal (a wonderful, more savory version of the typical dessert fare). The negatives: While the service, charm, drinks and appetizers began what we thought was going to be an amazing meal, the entrees were lackluster to bad. The trout dish had so much salt in it, on both the fish and the bouillabaisse, it was borderline inedible. It wasn't just a "little salty," it was as if it had been preserved in salt and not washed before cooking. The braised brisket looked attractive, but simply lacked any flavors or complexity. We shared the Parker House Rolls (ate too fast so no pic) and loaded potatoes w/sour cream on the side. These are crispy on the outside and fluffy on inside. Our daughter knocked out the Shrimp and Grits. Grits were perfectly creamy with juicy shrimp. Husband had The Pork Ramen with a broth that he wished he could swim in. The veggies were perfectly cooked. Wife had the Smash Burger. She would venture to say the best burger ever. I had a chance to try Field & Main almost a week ago, for a late lunch after a long bike ride. We had made a reservation for one of their cabañas for 2PM, but finished our ride a little faster than we anticipated and arrived early. The restaurant was accommodating and managed to give us a cabaña table. First, these cabañas are perhaps the best adaptation to the pandemic that I have seen. Top notch and clearly a significant investment by the restaurant. Love the privacy and the nice landscaping. The food and drinks were outstanding. We had their gazpacho (I need more of this gazpacho), the chili verde chilaquiles and the ooMami smash burger. I now have an excuse to start bike rides from Marshall in order to visit again. read more

Amazing food, amazing service! The outdoor cabanas are beautiful, although in the summer just be aware that there may be bugs. As an appetizer I definitely recommend the broccoli, it was delicious! I got the scallop dish as my entree and it was cooked perfectly and flavorful without being too salty, although I didn't really understand the popcorn on the side. The portion size is a bit small compared to the meat entrees, so if you're hungry I would get a meat dish. If you like sweet drinks the sangria will be a winner, it's sweet, fruity, and refreshing. The restaurant is charming and I appreciated the intimate feel of all the dining areas being in small rooms like an actual residence. We were seated near the open kitchen which was a treat to watch the staff at work. The service was consistently attentive and friendly. We ordered the bread plate and Brussels sprouts. The Brussels were Amazing! I could have eaten three plates of it. The bread was underwhelming in terms of flavor and texture. The scallops entree was also very good, perfectly cooked scallops and the sauce as endive was a nice accompaniment. The duck was ok. It was tender and succulent but not exceptional. 3.5 stars for an odd experience that was saved by excellent food. My wife and I went out to visit a Virginia farm recently and decided to stop by Field & Main (note: this was during the COVID pandemic). Located on Main Street in Marshall, this venue is a former Washingtonian Top 100 spot that is owned by the nearby Ashby Inn. The venue has lots of outside seating that is right next to its own small private parking lot, but all those spots were taken when we made reservations the night before, so we proceeded to sit at an inside table. The venue has several levels and ranges from a standard restaurant look on the first level to the more 1800s classic look on the second level where we ate near the kitchen. Something that was kind of tough about where we sat was the AC units were absolutely blasting, which was a little hard to sit in for an hour when I had on a polo and shorts for our summer day. After taking a seat at our table, trying out the fun water-activated hand towels, and speaking with another fabulous waiter who was helping the table next to us, our waitress came over to say hello and hand us menus. This waitress wasn't bad per se, but you could tell she was relatively new. She annoyed my wife several times both in terms of an inability to answer questions about options on the menu and pouring her a sample pour of her $13 glass of wine rather than a full glass (which looked especially small compared to my beer). All of the issues to that point (plus the fact that the venue no longer carries its famous buffalo pig ears or at least did not for lunch) was making for a not very fun meal. Fortunately, what saved the day here was the food. We ordered the Ooomami Smash Burger and the sirloin steak with a side of beet and quinoa salad. Both the burger and steak were absolutely delicious, with the former being just as good as any burger you would find in DC and the latter being some of the most tender steak around. My wife was still pretty upset as we were finishing our meal, but we talked about the food being both delicious and relatively inexpensive and determined that it was just one of those unlucky visits. Overall, Field & Main has the components for a 5 star meal experience. Eating outside with the server we met on the way in combined with the venue's excellent food would make for a great meal and is enough for us to be willing to give it another try if we are in the area in the future. read more

Can't wait to go back! We visited Christmas Eve and dined in one of their cabanas - what a fantastic experience! Given it was Christmas Eve and we were sooo excited to be dining out, we selected the five course prix food fixe menu. First a word about the cabanas. Each one is stand alone and has sliding glass doors on three sides - not necessary for winter but perfect for warmer months. Each has a heater as well as a fan. When we sat down, the restaurant added a modicum of comfort by allowing us to sanitize our eating space - based upon the fact that we saw them sanitizing after clearing other cabanas, I assume this is to make sure that all fears are allayed. We started with ham croquettes - warm cheese and ham filled fried cylinders that were accompanied by a delicious aioli...delicious! The second course was scallops on a small bed of lettuce with an apple reduction - the scallops were cooked to perfection! Course three was brussel sprouts but since my date is not a fan, they also brought grill broccolini. Both were very good. Steak came next, cooked to perfection, and then we were on to the baked apple "crisp" which was half an apple, peeled and cored and filled with sweetened cinnamon-flavored oats. Yum! Oh, and did I mention the bread?! The bread was slightly smoked and accompanied by butter spiced with chili and roasted shallots. Overall, this was an amazing experience. My server was helpful, answered all my questions, and seemed very knowledgeable about the menu. Overall, service speed was decently fast. For my appetizer, I went with the Broccoli Rabe with Maitaki Mushroom. Despite tasting quite good, the dish was excessively greasy. In fact, the vegetables were sitting in a puddle of grease. Fortunately, the entree was much better. The skirt steak was delicious; it was cooked to a perfect medium-rare, while the mushroom farro surprisingly complemented the steak. Abe was cool & the burger was good but neither of those were SO UNBELIEVABLY good that I will EVER return. Upon entering, the host seats us at the bar & it's just us so we sit as close to what we believe to be the edge of the bar as possible so that other patrons can be seated as necessary. (I've worked in the service industry since I was 14 so, I understand bar seating). I did not feel welcome by the host nor was the restaurant so packed out while we dined; hence, my brain is still spinning as to why we were treated with such disdain. I tried to brush it off but as time passed the meal simply got worse and worse. Abe, the bartender was pleasant, knowledgeable and excited to share the good news of his place of business; yet, this random woman couldn't care less about the time and professionalism that Abe had exuded. We were served drinks and an older gentleman joined us at the bar at the other end. We then had appetizers, and yet another single lady joined us at the bar, she sat next to the older guy. Our entrees were brought out and we started eating and tasting each others food as we were curious and got as much as we could to get a good feel for the place. Unbeknownst to us, a RANDOM WOMAN enters, she approaches me, leans into my personal space and says "dare I be so bold to ask you to move down a few chairs so that these two can get in at the bar??" MIND YOU, we're EATING, forks in hand, bland food in mouth, the works!! We move down despite full irritation & so now I'm sitting on the corner of the bar (like I can now see the bar's sink & all Abe's bar happenings) and the two new patrons plop down beside single lady who is seated by single guy. At this point, I am livid and I begin finishing my food at record speed (because... am I being punked right now?) but to add insult to injury, the patrons were simply waiting on their table and wanted drinks. YEA, you heard me right-- WAITING ON THEIR TABLE, JUST GETTING DRINKS!! IDK who raised you three individuals but let me teach you something about hospitality: 1. Move the people that aren't EATING (recall single lady seated by single guy... yea, not eating). 2. Move the people that aren't sitting together (please refer to hospitality point 1). 3. Drinks can be served on the ceiling (aka any place), seated/eating patrons should not be shifted, PERIOD!! BUT also, NEVER for a drink ticket. 4. Don't approach eating individuals, get in their personal space and breathe on their plate to satisfy your inconsiderate way of micromanaging the bar. 5. If I were said patrons, I would have ordered drinks from the corner bar seat or the center seat, not move others that are in the midst of dinner. ANNNNND 6. Don't you ever try me, TRY JESUS!! We initially decided to try all the things (drinks-desserts) but we ate our food and departed. The ticket could have been more but you chose to manage bar seats without consideration or professionalism & lost customers + all the wonderful people we know and work with not too far from the area. It was a long day of wine & cider tasting, we were tired, had an hour to kill, but boy, am I glad we hung in there to eat at Field & Main. Starting from the top, the amuse bouche was exactly that- a lovely lil entry for what's to come. We got the brussel sprouts for an appetizer. Honestly, it seems more suited as a side dish, but whatever, it's brussel sprouts, they were delicious. Let's talk about this chicken confit though. I LOVE confit, and the maple glazed chicken leg confit was AMAZING. Seriously, I could not get over how good it was. On the side, the cabbage had a salty flavor, the sweet potato was bland, so the combination of both in one bite was a perfectly seasoned bite of flavorful vegetables. At the rest of the table, the steak was cooked exactly as requested by each person. On to dessert, the kambucha bread pudding and horchata shake were decadent and delicious. I absolutely loved seeing horchata on the menu, and for dessert? Wonderful. Might I add that the guy at the front, Tony, is the nicest, most hospitable, enthusiastic, knowledgeable host you can find. After dinner, he took us into the kitchen, told us all about the hearth, showed us the rest of the house, its history, the objectives of the restaurant, and it really transformed our evening from a meal to an experience. For a restaurant of this caliber, the fact that it's only 45 minutes from DC should put it on the radar for a special occasion, a lovely dinner after a day in the Virginia countryside, or just a destination on its own. A wonderful romantic evening! We had booked this as a date night a few weeks back and then found out they won a Rammy a few days before coming. The building itself is beautiful and i truly enjoyed driving out this way than driving into the headache of DC. Just felt so peaceful and calm. We choose a lovely white from Sicily (they have an extensive wine menu if you ask your server). Our tables were spread out and we were given little hand sanitizer wipers upon arrival. We ended up going with 2 appetizer and 4 entrees (see photos for all). I know this sounds insane however we both barely had eaten today and really wanted to try it all. Everything was so fresh, the incorporation of the hearth gave that char, earthy, smoke taste to quite a few menu items. It was wonderful!!! I don't think i can choose a favorite between everything we ate but if i had to choose I'd say scallop and pork chop were up there! Towards the end of the night Neil came by, i believe 1 of the owners and wine guru. We were told his wine on tap is a blend he makes by partnering with a local winery ( i had the rose and it was delicious). We went on a Sunday with our two children and were sat outside on the front porch instead of the many private huts encased by glass behind it. At least three other tables of adult group were already sat next to us. A private hut would have been better for everyone. We ordered the wine pairing 5 course meal and shrimp from the kids menu for both girls. The cost was $15 per kid for 5 shrimp and a side, which seemed reasonable and they even let me sub a side when my kid wasn't happy about the crispy potatoes that accompanied all 4 kid choices. The first glass of wine was a quarter pour and took about 20 minutes to arrive. The kids meal arrived after the second pour, about 2oz, which I had to ask for, about another 15-20 min later. Then our compressed water mellon came out with 6 tiny watermelon, some sprouts and sprinkled feta, but no more wine till the next course which was another 15 minutes away. After the 2nd course of a slice of tomato and fruit, the tiny pours kept up with the next 3 tiny portions. Our main course was an over cooked 3oz slice of duck. When I asked for a pour comparable to the larger meal, I was told, "well, we want you to be able to drive home." By the underaged server. The meal for two kids and two adults with no extras was $500, which was super disappointing considering we spent most of the 2.5 hours hungry , thirsty, insulted and getting eaten alive by mosquitos and while trying desperately, to keep our kids from embarrassing with their overt boredom. read more

Why didn't I know about this place sooner?!? It's a very quaint restaurant on the main street in Marshall located in an old house. The dining room is bright and comfortable, and you are warmly greeted by the friendly staff. We dined here for brunch so that is what my review is based on. The menu is small but has something for pretty much everyone (limited vegan options but I'm sure they can accommodate). The prices are reasonable ($10-18 for an entree, with a $15 average). I had the roasted veggie hash and it was excellent. The egg was cooked perfectly and the veggies were wonderfully seasoned. Even though it may look like a small portion, it is MORE than enough and very filling. My dining companions had the French toast (I tasted - so good), the shrimp and grits, and the biscuits and gravy. Everyone had nothing but good things to say. The cocktail and wine menu is extensive. I opted for a house glass of rosé (dry!) which is local and only $7. My friends had mimosas for $8. Will certainly be back for another meal and to spend more time in this adorable town! read more

I would like to provide a very flattering review for our Friday evening 11/22/24 visit at this unique restaurant! My wife and I and another close family couple were celebrating my 74th birthday. The hostess greeted us warmly and offered our personalized menus (I was the Birthday Boy honored) and immediately showed us to our fireplace side table. Andrew was our server and he was knowledgeable and engaging and attentive (without smothering us) and we had a delicious dinner/dessert as well as enjoyed the specialty cocktails (the Pomegranate Martini was a big hit at our table). The restaurant owner served us a pre-dinner Butternut Tea that warmed us up for the main meal. The Trout entree was especially delicious and enjoyed by 2 of 4 diners. We took our own special bottle of wine (not on the Wine List there) and gladly paid the $30 corkage fee as we have been waiting for a special occasion to enjoy this vintage from our home cellar. This was our 3rd visit at Field & Main and our other couple's first visit there. We had such a good time that we will be returning again in the future! Beautifully decorated farm-to-table restaurant! We sat out on the patio (which is on the street) but it felt private and quiet. We didn't have any cocktails but the coffee and tea presentation was great and we tried the sparkling German juice. The food was outstanding with options that covered a wide range of tastes. I normally find farm-to-table to be pretty one dimensional when it comes to flavors (fall = savory pumpkin, root veggies, etc.) this was not the case here. Amazing. You need to go-especially if you're from out of town and visit anyone in Northern Va (which is the situation we were in)-our friends brought us here, and we loved every minute of it-start to finish. It's in a small town on a quiet main street. Charming interior, simple exterior, but our coming for the food, and the exposed kitchen. They have a lot of specialty items and I say that because they're cooked on their in house wood burning fire. I had a steak, we had a few apps, no drinks, but we did have dessert and everything was done to perfection. I even went with a friend who has some very specific dietary restrictions and they were able to accommodate which was wonderful.
