We dined at Field & Mian last Friday. When making my reservation I noted that we would be celebrating our anniversary. It would have been nice to have this acknowledged. Perhaps they missed my note? In any event, we both tried the 'Mystery Wine; challenge: you pick either a red or white and guess the varietal. If you guess correctly, you get 1/2 off the glass. We really didn't care if we got it right or got a glass at a discount. The idea was fun and we were game. Neither one of us guessed correctly; however, the white wine was a Portuguese wine I had never had before. I've tasted lots of wine varietals over the years, but this one was new to me. Here is this lost opportunity on Field and Main's part: okay, I got it wrong. Yet, how about bringing me the bottle or giving me notes about the varietal? That way I learn something from the experience, and they get to highlight the wine they serve. Just a suggestion. We started with the Hearth Baked Bread -- the spread was interesting: carnalized onion with goat cheese, apples, and cashews. Maybe it is a hit with other diners. It was a miss for us. For entrees I chose the barbeque pork with grits and collard greens. The barbeque was overwhelming -- way too sweet for my taste. Maybe it comes from over a decade living in the Carolinas and appreciating that style; though the sides were great, but the main dish: not so much. Plus, my dish was served lukewarm. Finally, I did order a second glass of wine. It never came. Our server started out strong but was giving us the 'going through the motions' treatment after delivering our food. After reading so many glowing reviews for years, it was a disappointment. It's pricey -- and that is fine if you feel it was worth it. In this case, it really wasn't. read more

3/5 August 2021. We stopped here for lunch as part of a day trip out to the area. They have gone all in on COVID protocol to the point where they have a series of covered outdoor tables, almost like small semi enclosed pavilions, behind the main building that make for a pleasant and private dining experience regardless of your feelings about COVID. The pavilions have fans and heaters so they should be comfortable in almost all conditions. The menu was narrow and somewhat overwrought. But given local sourcing the narrowness can be forgiven in order to ensure freshness. The service was very good and our waitress was very attentive which was impressive given the spacing, spread, and limited sight lines of the tables. The food was good but not outstanding. They obviously can make great food but it felt like there was pressure to "fancy" up dishes. There's nothing wrong with just doing something well and charging a premium for it but too many restaurants feel the need "justify" their costs. So the pricing was probably the only real negative. It felt just a bit too expensive for what we got. Overall it was a nice place with very good service and good to very good food depending on your tastes. If you do find yourself in the area and are looking for a more upscale option this would be a good one. We have dined at Field and Main too many times to count over the years, and the experience has always been amazing. Chef and co-owner Neal creates an incredible culinary journey every time. I recently booked a surprise birthday party/group dinner for 10 in a private cabana. Having worked in the hospitality industry I have a strong POV when it comes to planning events. The GM Julie was wonderful to work with throughout the process. We did the tasting menu, and added on additional courses and a customized, upgraded wine pairing for each as well. I added a special birthday cake prepared by the pastry chef too. Each. And. Every. Course. Was. Amazing! Our entire party loved it - especially the guest of honor. Absolutely, unquestionably an amazing experience. Everything about F&M is top notch. From starting to make a reservation to saying goodbye at the end of the evening, it was all spectacular. The food, the wine, the service, the ambiance.... There are not enough superlatives in my vocabulary to do it Justice. Simply put, we had a wonderful night and I was proud to celebrate a special event with my wife at Field & Main. The appetizers: hearth bread board, P.E.I mussels and curried squash bisque - fantastic! The main course: monkfish and pork chop - best we have ever had! ...and don't get me started on the desserts... but the chocolate napoleon - what a cool and tasty creation! The wine list is impressive with some really nice finds - there is something for everyone - even by the glass. Want a cocktail? Check out the Winter's Blush. My wife loved it! The hardest part for us was deciding what to eat and what we liked the best.... My luncheon group picked this restaurant because of all the great reviews, but were very disappointed. I'm giving one star for the nicely built Cabanas, but no more because of the wet seats of a few diners (which they unknowingly sat in), the wet floor (and wet purses), the SLOW service, with salads and entrees finally arriving all at the same time, and the lukewarm soup/nothing special food. They were packed for Saturday lunch and I suspect didn't have enough staff to handle everyone. We would have been more patient if they told us that, but they did not; staff seemed rather uncaring. read more

Whoever is making the desserts needs a raise. Ditto for whoever is making the sauces. The peaches and cream pound cake is outstanding. All of the sauces on the dishes were great. Whoever is seasoning vegetables and meats and operating the grill needs to be fired immediately. I don't enjoy the salty over charred ruins of food. If it's the same person as the sauce guy I don't see how that's possible. Poor sauce guy makes all these delicate flavorful sauces and then someone goes and ruins all the protein and veg to the point you can't even taste it. The waitress had a certain snootiness that was uncalled for given the lower caliber of food and limited wine selection. Goes with the territory I guess. Edit: forgot how sandy the asparagus was. It's been a couple of years since we last visited this amazing restaurant, so we decided to stop in for brunch on a Sunday morning. Good thing we had reservations, as they seem to get busy pretty early! (So, check their site and get reservations!) They have an AMAZING brunch menu, with many items plated to look perfect! (We watched everything coming from the kitchen) It as hard to decide was to get, but their Chilaquiles were amazing and very different compared to what we've had before. Their daily, house sausage was very nicely done and their biscuits were outstanding! Loved the apple butter that came with them! Coffee was perfect too.... We have always loved F&M, even pre-pandemic, but since COVID hit, it's really been the only restaurant we've felt safe coming to. When the weather started to turn, we figured our dining out days would be over until spring 2021. Enter the cabanas. We went on Thursday, which happened to be an extremely special occasion, and we were truly blown away by how beautiful the structures were. The heaters work brilliantly, and we were touched when the staff called to recommend that we bring some layers. Yes, of course the food and bevvies were magnificent, as ever. But being able to feel safe in these mad times is so rare and so special, and then to have such fantastic care taken on our special day... above and beyond. We can't wait to come back. read more

We've gone back several times and the last two times (a few months apart) myself and my friends received one or more items that were dramatically over salted. Some of their newer items have also been big flops. I can forgive that because I appreciate chefs who are willing to try new things even if it means they sometimes fail. But the over salting? At a restaurant that charges this much? Come on guys. The last time we actually had to send something back. Generally speaking the quality of service from the waitstaff and front of house remains top tier and the beverage menu is always a delight. We love to play the mystery wine game. But I am losing my trust in the kitchen. I don't want to drive all the way out to Marshall to have to send food back because it's too salty. Woof. I hope they figure it out. read more

Field & Main earns 5 stars for its excellent food and intimate chef's counter, despite some service hiccups. The restaurant, located in a converted house, has four (at least) separate, small dining rooms. They are sparsely decorated but the layout is a nice change of pace from the many single-room DC restaurants. This also helps reduce noise, along with sound absorbing tiles on the ceiling. Our menu was very similar to the one on the website, but with a little more detail: wines by the glass (including house options by the 1L and 500ml and a "mystery" option) and a full menu for the "feast" option. The a la carte items appeals to us but we decided to indulge with THE FEAST. The Feast menu is a $70pp prix fixe dinner served family style with 5 courses comprising 9 dishes. Wine pairing is an extra $40pp. The menu was all dishes from the main menu with two new ones (* below). Our courses were: (amuse bouche) 1) deviled eggs and pig's ear 2) Glazed Eggplant and spaghetti squash gratin* 3) Porchetta and Brussel Sprouts 4) Skirt Steak and Roasted Potatoes 5) Hearth baked cookie with marshmallows and ice cream* The dishes were excellent. The pig's ear, eggplant, gratin, steak, and cookie were particular stand outs. The steak was cooked perfectly; nothing chewy here. FYI the eggs, eggplant, and porchetta all had sweet components, which you might find off-putting if you don't like sweet+savory dishes. We sat at the first two seats of the chef's counter, which gave us an excellent view into the open kitchen. This was the most interesting and intimate chef's counter I've been to (including hot spots such as Chiko and Pineapple & Pearls) because we could clearly hear comments from the expediter and waitstaff. I loved this peek into the restaurant's operations. This is what pushed F&M to its fifth star. Our vantage point gave us a better understanding into what went into our service and food. For example, the waitstaff was constantly busy, which explained why our waiter rarely checked in on us. We also noticed that orders for a large party backed up the kitchen. There was a noticeable delay between our third and fourth courses, and then when the steak was sent out it was incorrectly sent to the diners next to us. The waiter apologized for this (appreciated) but the error stands. In general, the service was good; they cleared plates and silverware after every course, they wiped down our counter, they briefly explained each dish when delivered. Field & Main is worth the trip. If you order the Feast, a tip: eat half of the two main courses and ask for the rest to go. read more

The pasta with crabmeat was the saltiest dish I have ever been served and I should have sent it back. Very little crabmeat and it all sat in a soup of butter and salt. Terrible! The moment you walk inside you realize you are in for a special treat. We were able to dine in one of the outside mini cabins which created a personal dining room ambiance. I highly recommend the paired wine dining experience. The owner is a fantastic sommelier and the selections were world class. The food choices and presentation were amazing. This was our second visit since November of last year and we had a terrific experience. We have tried the present menu (again!) and it was amazing. Their staffs are super nice and know inside and outside of each menu. My husband likes to ask what indigrients they use to prep each menu as they always have a nice combination of indigrients with pretty plating. The staff was very friendly and kind enough to answer every question he asked. Thank you again for the super good service and we loved the food a lot. The service was great. My husband gives it 2 stars and I give it 3. His chicken was raw. When he pointed it out the manager he offered to box it up. The sides were good. The wine was good. We felt it was overpriced but there's no competition in Marshall. Nice decor. I would like to update this review since I posted this when Field & Main first opened. We were excited to visit. The food was 5-stars, but the service was only 3-stars. First, the good stuff...when we arrived for our reservation, the place was crowded. But, we were immediately greeted and taken to our table; a nice spot along a wall, with a great view of the open kitchen. Not only was this a pleasant surprise -- we typically enjoy watching staff prepare dishes in fine dining establishments -- it also turned out to be a benefit to understanding the service issues we experienced later. In general, we felt the restaurant was stylishly casual, with dining divided between several small rooms, creating a fairly intimate experience and helping keep down noise and traffic near the tables. After only a few minutes at our table we were greeted by our waiter. He had a casual, easy manner that felt right for the vibe of the place. And, throughout the evening, he remained the same. In addition to our waiter, we interacted with several runners through the evening who delivered and described plates for the various courses. All were pleasant and spoke confidently. We opted to start with a round of cocktails, the Flora Rosa and the Sunny Disposition. Both were flavorful with a nice craft vibe. For our meals we chose the Presents menu (chef's tasting) accompanied by the wine pairings. The first course, Trout Rillette, was a very nice craft riff on tuna salad. The second course, Chicken of the Woods "Tenders", was a less interesting craft riff, this time on chicken tenders. The third course was a wonderful Honeynut Squash stuffed with Barley Risotto. The fourth, and final cooked course, was Duck Breast with Potato Rosti and a Concord Grape Sauce. The duck was presented rare and well seasoned, but without any sign of a sear. This may have been purposeful, but it left the duck feeling a bit one dimensional for us. The grape sauce was a winner...a distinct concord grape flavor up front, with a comfortable depth and heft to stand with the duck. The final course was desert; Fig Leaf Ice Cream with Fig Jam and Fresh Figs. This too was a winner. As mentioned earlier, we opted for the wine pairings for our meal. We were very happy we did. Each paired well with its plate, and we appreciated the inclusion of a local vintner for one of the courses. A final note about the food. Each dish was aesthetically plated (except the "tenders" which arrived in a basket), and delivered to our table quickly from the kitchen (we were able to watch our dishes being crafted, inspected, and then nearly immediately picked up by runners). Now for the not as good...the service. While our waiter seemed happy to answer questions, if he didn't have an answer, he made no attempt to find one out. This happened several times during our meal. Also, we asked the runner who picked up our finished dishes from the duck course about how the potato rosti was prepared. She went to the kitchen to ask the station chef who'd cooked our potatoes. But, she didn't return with an answer. Instead, we watched her just go back about her normal duties. The pacing...got off track after our first course, and never improved. Our reservation was quoted for 90 min, but we spent 2 hr 50 min at the table. As mentioned earlier, we could see the kitchen from where we were seated. We could also hear the staff talk. Not sure of his official position, but a gentleman in a flowered shirt seemed responsible for the flow of orders in and plates out of the kitchen. We could clearly see him using visual cues to manage the pace of our dishes, and could hear him each time he called our next course to the staff. Unfortunately, he'd wait several minutes after our previous course had been cleared before calling in the next, which created gaps of 15 minutes or more between courses. As we waited for our squash course, we watched the kitchen seemingly take a break. After nearly 10 minutes of idle time, he appeared to realize we'd been forgotten. We heard him call out our order and watched as he and one of the station chef's debated about what had happened. One final hiccup with service. A couple days before our visit, we exchanged emails with the restaurant to add a cake to take home with us. Unfortunately, instead of receiving a boxed cake on our way out, it was brought to us between the duck and desert courses, plated, to be eaten right then. Also, our waiter seemed completely unaware we wanted it to take home. As a final disappointment, at no point in the evening was anything said to us by anyone about any of the issues or mistakes. It was as though it was all normal. In the end, we enjoyed our visit, and appreciated the craft and creativity of the food. Our bill was more than $200 per person though. At that price point, we have far less tolerance for service related issues, especially when there's zero acknowledgement at the time by the staff. I feel confident we'll go back for another meal. Hopefully the service will be hiccup free. read more

Wonderful place near Virginia wine country. We came here for dinner and sat at the kitchen counter. Got their fixed menu and wine pairing. The food was really good - the star was the bronzino fish, perfectly cooked and the spicy/sweet sauce worked really well with it. Presentation of the fish was also cool - came as an entire fish and you got to deconstruct it. I also liked their asparagus dish - fresh tasting asparagus, though the lady behind the counter who put together that dish seemed to take an inordinate amount of time putting the asparagus on there to look just right. Everything came near perfect until a very disappointed entrees. Both duck leg and famous pork chop were pre-cooked and not heated right. Duck leg was hot outside and lukewarm inside. It was overcooked, hard and dry. Pork chop was servered with near room temerature, same as mushroom and summer corn on the plate. Service lady helped to heat it up, but still left pork chop fat in white. F+M put the entrees in the cold stoneware that made it even worse. It's funny that our ordered side dishes were extreme hot compared to these "near cold" entrees. Two stars just responds to this upscale fine dining. A disappointed experience. read more

An upscale place in a small town. Overall things were probably better than other local places, but I have some problems with it. I know the chef has his ideas, but I dislike any place that thinks that they know everyone's taste. You get it the way the chef fixed it.... Not any choice. We were told that they won a prize for their hamburgers. I didn't vote on it. You have no choice on how the beef is cooked. Salad is dressed with their choice. Prices are way to high to be told that they know how food should be prepared. This may be the best food in town... find another town ! Even the local town diner tastes better. This is the best restaurant in the entire DC area! The tasting menu was simply outstanding. The flavor combinations, cooking techniques, steak and the dessert were all a 10/10. A very sad, unappealing entrée. The 3 black strips were evidently the "carrots". The 2 small beets were the only edible portion. The salmon was to be cooked Med but was as dry & tasteless as cardboard. Both salmon entrées arrived a full hour after our 1 appetizer. They had obviously been sitting under a heat lamp for way too long, thus the lack of any moistness & the black shriveled carrots. The Crispy Potatoes suffered the same fate & were hard to even pierce with a fork This was our first time, a special occasion, a long drive and a huge disappointment given the recommendation of friends. The manager was understanding & apologetic but it won't be enough to encourage a repeat visit anytime soon. read more

Our experience at Field & Main was disappointing due to the lack of quality service. We had lunch reservations for Friday, July 16 for a party of three. We entered and the entire restaurant was still very empty and asked to be seated in the front, main room. Immediately upon walking into the dining room we noticed the music was playing so loud it was difficult to hear and asked the host if he could turn down the music slightly which he agreed to do. Ten minutes later, the music had not been turned down and we asked our server to do so which she seemed ticked off to have been asked but begrudgingly did. I mentioned to our host and the server that we were there to celebrate a very special, 80th birthday. No one seemed to care or pretend to care. Unfortunately, each time we interacted with our server she acted like we were putting her out. We didn't order alcoholic drinks which appeared to disappoint her as if she was writing us off for "no big bill = no big tip". Once our food took at least 30 minutes to be served even though we ordered before the lunch crowd arrived. Once our food was served our server never came back to ask about satisfaction with our meals or if we needed anything. I was able to get the attention of another server to bring me some hot sauce. Fortunately, the three different lunch items we ordered were delicious. The high point (only) of the entire experience. We also had to wait a long time to get our check and for our server to come back so we could request the check, which in fact, she never did. Luckily, another server saw us waiting and came to pick up the check and our credit cards and a third server, both whom were very pleasant returned the checks and our cards. Upon leaving, we never saw our server again and the host never looked up from his computer to thank us or say goodbye. Overall, nothing was particularly bad, just disappointingly off (and we still tipped 20%). I understand that many restaurants are currently facing staffing challenges due to Covid. Even so, the entire experience could have been wonderful if the staff were personable and customer service oriented. read more

A bit out of the way? Yes, Marshall VA is not in DC. Quelle surprise. What is the surprise is Tony. And the food. And the desserts. Tony and the entire staff could not be better. Tony is a bit of DC and the staff is a bit of country. Translation; Tony will take care of you when you might find yourself on a bit of country time. And if this is a problem for you, just look around at the wonderful art, amazing people and exhale. It is okay. Or at least it will be when the food arrives. The food is sublime. After more than 50 meals our only, and I mean only, complaint is that the scallops were so fresh they needed better cleaning as there was a spot of sand. Mind you, they were cooked perfectly and this is our only complaint. In 50+ meals. Oh, have I mentioned their brunch?!? Holy hell. I am making a mistake if people actually read and pay attention to this post. My only wish is to keep visiting every Saturday and/or Sunday to start my day with their biscuits, add in a split entree and then split their French toast for "dessert." Life really does not get much better than Field & Main on a Saturday morning. And if yours does, god love you. Just know that I am hella jealous because life at F&M is pretty damned good. read more
