They aren't made with fresh squeezed lime, but whatever sour mix they use is delicious. You can get salt or Tajín on the rim. They don't do frozen margaritas, but we saw tequila sunrises come out to the table next to us and they looked amazing in these giant glasses. We ordered the barbacoa tacos and a Cubano torta. The tacos come with three and you can mix flour or corn tortillas. Both are made in house and were incredible. The beans were honestly one of my favorite parts of the meal, and the light red salsa they serve with the warm chips was so good. The Cubano torta was huge and really flavorful. The homemade potato chips were a little soggy, but the sandwich more than made up for it. Portions here are definitely generous. They have a small bar, indoor and outdoor seating, and TVs throughout. We watched the World Cup with the sound on, which made it a fun atmosphere. Just know the broadcast is in Spanish. The staff doesn't speak much English, but everyone was incredibly kind and welcoming. Parking is right out front. The area has a little bit of foot traffic that can feel sketchy, but we could see our car from the restaurant the whole time and never felt concerned. It did - and honestly, the good vibes started with the guy taking our order - pretty sure his name was Phillip. He was super friendly, had great energy, and just made the whole experience better. The nephews loved the food just as much as they did years ago. One of them thought the birria consomé was so good he saved the leftovers and used it with chicken nuggets later that night. That says something! We hung out for a while, catching up and enjoying the food, and every now and then Philip would swing by to check on us like we were old friends. If I was here for conferences or driving through, I would bring my students, colleagues and friends here for a "Grand Street" experience and a yummy lunch. (one of the only places I order tea...not sure why that is...but I do!) Others have had the nachos, enchiladas, tacos...and have not had anything negative to say about their meals. It is for sure in a sketchy part of town, but in my experiences, the "hole in the wall" no chain restaurant is the best. I typically visit at lunch, have no issues getting a table, and the prices for lunch specials are good. The inside isn't anything to write home about, but the food...I never found a substitute in all the years of living in San Antonio. Service can be hit or miss. No doubt you will always get your food. It was an incredible menu, including unique options like Queso, Chamoy, Pinenut, and Eggnog alongside plenty of classics. I went with a scoop of Eggnog, and it was phenomenal. I never expected to choose ice cream with raisins in it! My husband chose half Queso and half Chamoy and loved the sweet-savory combo.
