I normally go to SGV for good dim sum. I recently found out about the 50% off Sunday Dim sum at Fifty One so I organized a group of friends to come and try it out. This is not your typical dim sum place. Your servers will be white and they would not cut your Lo Mai Gai in half (they ultimately did it for us because we requested it - it was rather funny interaction) For dim sum in Culver City, despite that my expectation was low, it was pretty good. Har Gow was pretty good, the lobster dumpling was amazing (and you can't get that at many places). It did come was a price tag. The chicken feet was surprisingly very good. The Bay has A TON of vegan Chinese with mock meats, plant based sauces, etc. We have yet to find that here & 51 is added to our list of "just OK" Chinese spots Service was very friendly. My family and I absolutely LOVE this restaurant! (this is my picky 3 year old son's favorite restaurant!) Food is amazing, great quality, with generous portions and awesome prices. Born and raised in the SGV, I was a bit skeptical at first. But Fifty One truly does not disappoint. This has been our go-to at least 1-2x a week, both for dine-in and for take-outs on lazy days when I don't feel like cooking dinner. Staff are also always friendly and attentive. Just found out that they will be closing down. What a big loss to the community! They will be greatly missed. This is our second time dining at Fifty One Chinese Restaurant, always with family--and we've loved it each time. Their dim sum is really something special: big, flavorful pieces that are freshly made and absolutely delicious. It quickly became our go-to Sunday spot for family lunches. We were heartbroken to hear that today is their last day of operations. It's truly sad to see a place like this go, especially one that's brought so many good memories to families like ours. This location has changed restaurants several times over the years. Previously, it was Lyfe Kitchen for a few years. And before that, it was something else. Ambiance: Gorgeous 5/5 interior. Definitely one of the more aesthetically pleasing Chinese restaurants I've been to in the US. I love how spacious the restaurant is. The dividers between the tables were a nice touch. And the decorations were very pretty. Service: Not too bad, but it is definitely an area that needs improvement. We were seated without any menus and were not told about the QR code at the side of the table that we were supposed to scan. There is a separate menu for vegan items, which I think is a terrible idea. I'm not vegan, but I wanted to order a "vegan" cucumber salad for our appetizer. Cucumber salad with black vinegar is an item you would usually find on the menu at a traditional Chinese restaurant. If I didn't know there was a separate vegan menu, we would not have known that they serve this. On the website, the menu could also perhaps use a darker and bolder font because it is hard to read even with my glasses on. The waiters were all very kind and had great attitudes. However, it was somewhat necessary to wave them down to get their attention. But once you do get their attention, they'll get you what you need. They also got our order incorrect a couple of times and it took them two times to finally get it right. Food: As another reviewer mentioned, it is definitely Chinese inspired fusion food... not fully authentic. I recommend coming here on a Sunday for the half-price dim sum special if it is your first time trying this place out. - Cucumber Salad: tasted great, but it was chopped in all different shapes and sizes and was apparently the ugliest Chinese cucumber salad my husband has ever had (according to my husband). - Stir Fry String Beans: tasted sort of bland. They might have forgotten to add salt. But it wasn't terrible (for me). My husband, who likes Chinese food way more than I do, was not a fan. - Not Your Average Walnut Shrimp: I didn't try this, but according to my husband, it was the worst one he has ever had due to blandness. My parents thought it was OK. - Jumbo Pork Xiu Mai: So... I don't like dim sum in general and only go to dim sum spots when other people want it. However, my husband is a diehard Din Tai Fung fan. I liked the Jumbo Pork Xiu Mai because it was like a huge pork meatball wrapped in a tasty wonton wrap. My husband hated it lol. But I think he was comparing it to Din Tai Fung. - Masago Jumbo Har Gao: This was the item they kept getting wrong. But eventually, it finally came. I thought it was delicious. It was wrapped in a thick stretchy, translucent tapioca wrapper with a big piece of shrimp and topped with masago. At this point, my husband was so unhappy with the food, I actually had to convince him to try this item and indeed it turned out to be the best part of the meal for him as well. Overall, I would say this place has a lot of potential. It's in a prime location in downtown Culver City with growing foot traffic. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful. I truly enjoy the black pepper steak bites from Fifty One. Anytime I go there it's a must-order on the menu. Service is friendly. I like it because it's not one of those hyped up places where you need a reservation just to be overcharged for the restaurant location and not because the food is actually good. The bell peppers and onions were the same. maybe even colder. unacceptable The green beens were about the same. Gigantic beans, probably blanched yesterday and not wokked very thoroughly The sauce was so sparse that the beans were bland. The dining room is empty. well a couple people, but big and just not very attractive. The sesame balls for dessert were ok. hot at least. Served on Arugula, my favorite dessert garnish of all time. We got the chicken pot stickers and egg rolls (fried items come out first) in addition to char siu steamed buns, red bean buns, squid ink custard buns, xiao long bao, and fried shrimp balls. The char siu and red bean buns could've used more filling. Note that the squid ink only refers to the black dyed buns, and the filling is just custard. Fifty One is an Asian fusion restaurant located on Culver Bl, which is known as restaurant row of Culver City which is 10 mins south of Beverly Hills. Have passed this restaurant before, but this was my first visit during the DineLA week. There's free one hour parking at the city parking structure beneath the Culver steps, which is nearby. After learning this restaurant does NOT include MSG, and uses authentic cooking techniques to prepare asian(mostly chinese) favorite dishes. Ordered from the prix fix lunch menu and added the Lobster tails with noodles. The interior dining area was spacious and nicely decorated. We decided to sit outside, as my furbabe Fendi was with me. The food was presented nicely, looked and smelled delicious. Service by the waiter/server was cordial and accommodating. After taking the photos, insect flies buzzed annoyingly and dining leisurely was a challenge ...and had everything boxed TOGO. All our food were boxed and bagged nicely with care. After we got into our car, I managed to taste the green beans and the lobster tail noodles and both were very good. My friend ate the Sichuan spicy chicken and the lemon steam Alaskan cod. He said the chicken was served cold and not great. The lemon steamed Alaskan cod was a healthy concept but lacked flavor, the soy sauce and chili oil helped enhance the taste. The food prep and combination of seasonings used does taste far and above the ordinary. And the variety of menu offerings deserves 4 stars. For Asian fusion/Chinese cuisine, I usually dine in my local neighborhood of Beverly Hills at Mr Chow, X'ian, Crustacean and Capital. For Culver City, Fifty One Asian kitchen is worth a visit, but I suggest you select seating inside, unless you're not bothered by the annoying flying insects! read more

I've seen this place in Culver City quite a few times and always meant to check it out. Today, I finally had the chance to eat here. The atmosphere was nice with cute decorations and an adorable panda chopstick holder for each person. We were seated quickly and the servers were nice and quick. We got the Efu Noodles with Shrimp and 2 plates of xiaolongbao. The Efu Noodles with Shrimp were overcooked, so the noddle texture was off. There were also only 6 shrimp total, which felt like quite a small number considering how big the dish was. The flavor was quite good, but I don't think I'd order this dish again since it was quite underwhelming. Their xiaolongbao saved the day! It was very delicious with the perfect temperature, skin thickness, soup amount, and flavor. These were amazing and made the trip worth it. Overall, I would consider returning if I'm in the area. TLDR: Solid Chinese food and dim sum restaurant. Great service, ambiance, and style. Enjoyable all around. You get what you pay for. Pros: -Modern Chinese food -Attentive service -Excellent presentation and location Cons: -Pricey Not a bad dish in the house, Fifty One is an enjoyable Sunday lunch. It falls short of decades old, hole-in-the-wall dim sum at times but they don't do anything poorly. Note, most dim sum dishes are 2x the cost of the rusty shops. The entree costs are on par. Food -Xiu Mai Chicken - Juicy? Yes. A little too big? Yes, imo. Toppings such as seaweed, shrimp, masago, truffle? Honestly, couldn't tell barely taste difference between them so just get the regular. Seaweed and masago would stand out as slight flavor enhancers if I had to choose. -CHAR SIU BAO - Classic, well done. No surprises -NOT YOUR AVERAGE Walnut Shrimp - Kinda? It's not mayo drenched which is nice. Holds a crisp and the right sweetness. It's well done, above average, but I wouldn't say it's unique which is what I thought the title meant. -STIR FRY STRING BEANS - Well done! Crisp, perfectly cooked. The restaurant is decorated really nicely and is fairly spacious. My favorite part of the restaurant is definitely the unique ambience, but even then the bathroom floor was sticky. As for the food, I think it is missing the mark for Asian Fusion as described below: Hot & Sour Soup (B) - The taste of the dish is overall pretty good, but I am confused by the usage of chips that taste more like tortilla chips than wonton crisps. Furthermore, chicken cube destroys the texture of the dish. While the chicken is tender, it needs to either be minced (as stated on the menu) or shredded so it flows with all the other elements of the soup that is julienned. Peking Duck (C) - The duck is tender and the skin is crispy, which pairs with classic ingredients of cucumber, scallion white, and hoisin, and a tender pancake. However, I feel that the $27 price point for half a duck warrants some sort of elevated fusion nature. The duck meat to skin ratio needs to be inverted such that the skin is the primary since thats the what's the star of the peking duck. The "pickled" vegetable bed is a nice feature but needs aggressive pickling to bring out flavors into the dish since the cucumber is not naturally aggressive in taste. Lemon Steamed Cod (C) - The cod itself is tender, but the fish lacks taste. As an elevated version of steamed whole fish, the soy sauce premise is good, but needs to be more generous with the sauce. Peanuts also do not go with this dish at all, and I think scallion, ginger, fried garlic, and chili thread with braised vegetable would be much better. read more

I was trying to hype myself up with getting lunch here again. I don't usually eat out for lunch around my work, but the past few days I've been splurging. My last visit was delicious. This time was not. I opted for the very filling Fifty One Noodles and an order of the Fried Xiu Mai (with pork). The sauce for the noodles was almost too sweet. It wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't like what I had before. Not to waste food or the funds, I powered through it. The Fried Xiu Mai on the other hand was very off-putting. The outside looked normal and fried, but upon a first bite, it was still raw pork inside. It's like the frying process didn't even hit the middle of the pieces. If you've ever cooked with ground meats/proteins before, especially with mixing by hand, there's that "squish" feeling... that was what was in my mouth. I cut open all 4 pieces of the order, and it still took an extra 3 minutes in the microwave at work for it to get up to a consumable temperature. I think I'm okay to pass on this place going forward. Also, if you're in a rush, expect an order (even this one) to take upwards of 45-50 minutes before it's ready. There is a weird glitch with their online ordering system where you place the order and exactly a minute later, you get notified that it's ready for pickup. It happened on my original order back in the day, to which I had called to verify when the order would be ready. It happened again today, so I tried to gauge the time, but I was off by 20 minutes. Chinese food on the west side! Correction, good Chinese food with good value on the west side?! I didn't think that it was possible, Until I came here! I consider myself to be fairly picky about my Chinese food, and authenticity to me is very important. I was extremely surprised to find an authentic Chinese restaurant encased in a modern, chique setting on this part of town. Surprisingly, reservations at this place were easy to come by. As far as ambience goes, this restaurant beautifully incorporates wood carVed screens, Chinese lanterns, and a very nice banquet room in the back for special occasions. One of the most visually appealing Chinese restaurants on the west side, rivaling those in the century city mall. As far as food goes, this is where I was very impressed. Here is a review individually of the items that we ordered. Hot and sour soup (5/5) - A very generous portion, enough for four people, at a price point of $10. The soup was savory, well-balanced, and not overly salty. Definitely has a little bit of a kick to it, but what would you expect? Pan fried green beans (4.5/5) - again a very generous portion of green beans, extremely fragrant. Would order this again, my only recommendation to the restaurant is to expand their vegetable options on the menu a bit more. Hot pot fish soup (5/5) - The pièce de résistance of the meal! Giant bowl of hot, unctuous, mouthwatering and slightly tangy fish soup. I was blown away by the authenticity of this dish, the generous portion, and the lovely bowl i which it was presented. I cannot wait to order this dish again, highly recommend this. Mixed roasted meat platter (4/5) - consisting of five different roasted meats, this dish includes chicken, duck, roasted pork belly, ribs, and char siu. Looking at these individually, the stand out by far was the pork belly. Crispy on the surface, juicy in the middle, I have not had pork belly this good on the west side. If you're craving something like this, no need to go to the Saint Gabriel Valley. This place's pork belly rocks!! As far as the remaining meats, The char siu was my next favorite, though like the remainder of the dishes, it's suffered a little bit from being overcooked. Nonetheless it was still delicious. The chicken and duck were my next favorite, again a little over cooked. Not mind blowing but solid. Finally, the ribs in the instance were unfortunately quite overcooked. Had lost a lot of the juiciness that you would expect. Not sure if this was a one off or just the way it is prepared, but definitely not my favorite amongst the roast meat dishes. In a separate instance, I also ordered the dry pot to go (4.5/5). This was again, a very generous portion, very authentic, and had plenty of meat and vegetables. Finally, there is a drink option for $20 where you can get four beers, and a generous carafe of sake. Yes, again, I said $20. You will not find alcohol any cheaper anywhere, except for maybe BevMo. Well I did not have a chance to try everything on their menu, I was extremely impressed by By both the quality of the food as well as the value. Ambience a solid, service was fast. I had this place on my Yelp "to try" list since I was curious about it when I passed by. Well, a friend and I went and boy were we surprised. When we walked in the dining room looked really nice! It is very large and welcoming with a lot of Chinese decor. We were seated immediately and were given menus. 4 stars given for the service of the young man with the dark curly hair. He was rude and would just bring things out to the table and put them down. No explanation or response when we said thank you. The other gentleman was more engaging and helpful. I am SO happy that I recently discovered this place as I'm always craving dim sum and there's virtually no options here in West LA. While it's definitely a pricier than your traditional dim sum spots in the 626, it's pretty good/authentic (while still being a bit more modern/Americanized) and definitely worth it on Sundays where all dim sum dishes are 50% off all day long. I came here for lunch this past Saturday with my friends and actually ended up coming back the very next day with my boyfriend LOL - we had to take advantage of the 50% off, and we ended up paying $29 (pre-tip) for a substantial meal + 2 drinks, which is a great deal. On Saturday, I got to dine in and felt very comfortable doing so as the tables were extremely spread out, and on Sunday I dined outside on the patio. I ordered a variety of different dishes across my 2 visits this past weekend, and a few things to note: the lobster dumplings are HUGE (definitely pricey without the half off on Sundays, but they do not skimp on the lobster filling at all), the crispy shrimp balls came with a white (horseradish? or wasabi?) sauce that's not your usual red sweet and sour sauce, could not really taste a strong truffle flavor in the Truffle Xiu Mai, and I loved the lo mai gai. Their lychee soda & their fruit green tea were really good as well! All in all, so happy I found this spot and it's definitely going to be one of my go-to's on Sundays! Nifty fifty one! My friends and I came by during Dine LA and were thoroughly impressed by their Dine LA menu especially for the price of $25 per person. It was quite crowded during lunchtime on the weekend but I had reservations ahead of time so we were seated promptly. Their extensive Dine LA menu is impressive. You get a drink, appetizer, main dish, and a dessert for the price! We had a group of 4 so we got one of everything to share family style and the portions were sizable. Honestly we were impressed by the presentation and the taste of the food than expected. There is indoor and outdoor seating and we opted for outdoors since it was a nice day. We come here often on Sundays for their 50% off dim sum since we live close. In our recent visit, the service was quite slow (31 mins from order for first item) but it was a full house so that's a bit of a wash. We've tried the following over the last year: Steamed pork ribs - avoid, meat is a bit spongy and not deeply flavored Lobster dumpling - they bring this out with a syringe of oil so it's a little extra. Probably wouldn't get this other than on Sunday. Char Siu Bao - decently good and sweet, bun isn't too dry. Jumbo Pork Xiu Mai- decently juicy, but not a ton of flavor nor the most fresh. Xiao Long Bao- didn't serve with a spoon, fell apart Jumbo Har Gow- big pieces of cut shrimp, not too shredded, quite sticky, a little doughy. 8/10 Steamed dumplings- a bit more unusual of a filling with some thin noodles, wasn't the best though Fried dumplings- same as above, a bit oily Overall the food is surprisingly getting better, especially since first opening. This is really a surprising find for Chinese Food that is out of the west side. We were in the Culver City area and was looking for a place to enjoy our dinner. Fifty One shows up on Yelp search. The position of the restaurant was not in the correct coordinate, it was at the opposite corner of the location pin from Yelp. We finally arrived and found restaurant with plenty of seats inside. It does have unique China old Town décor inside with lots of different types of Chinese lanterns. We were seated and greeted by our waiter right away. We ordered our drinks and looked over the menu. Below are the dishes we ordered from the menu. - Hot & Sour Soup - Great, A little differ from traditional Hot and Sour soup in a very good fusion way. It warms and opens up our stomach for the upcoming dishes. - Stir Fry Mixed Vegetables - Great, it was a good mix of two types of broccolis and butter squash. They were seasoned and cooked perfectly. - Kung Pao Chicken - Good, this isn't your traditional Szechuan Kung Pao Chicken; it has some Cantonese style touch in it. It was very flavorful. - Roasted Duck - Great, very tasty and tender. - Golden Tail Shrimp - Great, shrimp is covered with noodle strips and fried perfectly to ensure the inside is juicy and the outside is crispy. - Pork Xiu Mai Truffle - Great, it was big Xiu Mai and very tasty. - Arnold Palmer and Hot Tea - Complementary Sesames Ball - Great, this was served after we requested a check. It was very tasty, crispy outside with red bean filling inside. If I wasn't so full I would have eaten them all. The price isn't the typical Chinese restaurant price in the West Side. Couldn't get many pics of the entire spread because I was digging in right away! Came here for dinner on a Friday night, made reservations although the entire restaurant was empty when we got there. Anyways the food was awesome. Ordered the ha gao, sui mai with truffle, lobster duMpling, xao long bao, and beans and wow everything was delicious af! I think we could've done without the lobster but it was enormous and presented so cute! Really enjoyed our meal here. The service was also great and ambiance was pretty! read more

Food was fantastic. Flavorful and came out quickly. We enjoyed the dim sum sampler. I don't care much usually for truffle but that one turned out to be my favorite of the 5. The vegetable egg rolls had a kick of black pepper and were packed with flavor, some of the best egg rolls I've had. We also enjoyed the bbq platter, again I don't eat much pork but the pork was my favorite. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, good quality and no "porky" taste. Our host was doing his best and our server was professional and friendly. Unfortunately everywhere is short staff and we all know how that can hurt your team. However I do feel they are doing their best and we still very much enjoyed our experience and will be returning! read more

Four of us had dinner here recently based on a recommendation. The food was pretty good and we would definitely come back to try more of the menu items. We had potstickers, chicken lettuce wrap, golden tail shrimp, har gao, the Cantonese BBQ platter, kung pao chicken and beef chow fun. The only item we wouldn't order again was the BBQ platter. The roasted pork looked better than it tasted (skin was not crispy at all - just tough to chew). But all the other dishes were good.
