    The spread

This place is top of the line authentic Szechwan Chinese food. I ordered 4 appetizers: spicy cucumber, fried chicken, the pork wontons & egg rolls. All delicious but you must try the wontons, they are soft dumplings, not fried and come in a sauce that you will want to drink. I ordered 3 entrees: Szechwan beef, chicken chop suey & honey walnut shrimp. Again all delicious but the honey walnut shrimp is a total knock out, would never get sick of eating this dish. It is rich in flavor and not overly sauce-y I ordered 3 sides: shrimp fried rice, garlic green beens & white rice. Shrimp fried rice is soooo good but there's nothing that can compare to the flavor loaded garlics green beans. They're juicy and addictively delicious. They are a MUST order item! The thing is it's not just the food, the service is family owned and it really shows. It's a very friendly and happy, neighborhood environment to enjoy a meal.

EGG FRIED RICE - SIDE PORTION

Ambiance was not the best, but I think it just needs a new coat of paint and a good clean and then it would be perfect. Service was good we arrived around 1pm and finished eating at 1:40 and then got our bill within a couple minutes of finishing. The waiter was really nice and the food was super delicious so I would definitely recommend this for take out and hosting parties. The hot and sour soup wasn't super spicy which I really enjoyed because normally at other places it's too spicy for me. I didn't like the rice texture much but that's a personal thing the taste was good though. I loved the wontons they were so good I think I could have eaten the 12 piece instead of the 6. Over all 4/5 !

Side MANDARIN SALAD LUNCH BOWL - Shredded Chicken. Good. Kung pao chicken bad!
    Daniel B.

Bottom line: Is this the best Westside Chinese restaurant ? Hmmm.. While the ingredients are certainly way more fresher than casual Chinese fast-food or dine-in, the kung pao chicken wasn't all that great when everything else considered . Ordered kung pao chicken lunch special. 13 dollars is okay for the price when you also factor in the mandarin chicken side salad . And the mandarin side salad was the highlight of the lunch special. Homemade toasted sesame dressing with the crunchy iceberg lettuce with cuts of chicken was a nice palliative for the disastrous bitterness of kUng pao chicken. The Kung pao chicken was just awful. It wasn't spicy, nor did it contain any veggies Im accustomed with. The sauce consisted of a nauseating dry and toasted almost bitter taste. Kung pao chicken has a pleasing heat or spiciness consistency, but this was just bitter. Meats seemed like a bump above , but the sauce absolutely killed anything redeeming. Had to order a cup of hot and sour soup separately. Should have came with the lunch special. It was neither spicy, nor sour and seemed generic Altogether, $20. Ridiculous. For lunch portions .

The reception wasn't warm as the girl was on the phone and she just waved at us to get in. Food was scrumptious. Their basa fish fillet in chilli sauce had to be the best I've tasted. The fish was tender, sauce yummy, veggies fresh! It was excellently prepared. Husband and Wife beef and tripe slices was another outstanding dish. It was so good I had to order more rice to eat with it therefore happily broke my diet again. Steamd eggplant with pickled condiment on top tended to be on the salty side, it was soft and tasty. I loved it! Service was lukewarm at best. The girl performed her service in a convincingly nonchalant way. But at least I got lemon infused water refilled twice. :) Well decorated with Chinese cultural elements. Very spacious, clean and peaceful ambience. We had a lovely time and will return.

We selected the Wontons in Chili Oil, Original Kung Pao Chicken, Stir-Fried Angus Ribeye with Scallions, and Home-Style Fried Rice. It all tastes cheap, mushy, or over-sweetened. UGH! It's not awful, but this food currently does not deserve a Michelin Guide label. Rather, this place tastes like Panda Express but with slightly better ingredients. I arrived at Sichuan Impression (Alhambra) on Thursday (around 6PM). Parking is easy because it touches a customer parking garage. Parking sign says, "Authorized Parking for Our Customers & Guests Only - 2 Hour Limit." Upon arrival, there's a crowd of people eager for the Dine LA promotion. There's an electronic waitlist. We waited about 25 minutes before being seated. Staff is rushed and lackluster. Staff is frantically stretched thin, and Staff barely interacts with customers. The service is similar to ordering bad McDonalds at the counter; Staff is indifferent and impersonal. It all felt like a marathon or sprint, as Staff plops the food on the table before running to the next table. Messy dishes pushed onto the table before hurrying away. Staff rushed everyone to order, and Staff almost never checked up on the table until the very end when the "tip option" appeared. As mentioned the family chose the Dine LA Summer Menu ($72). The Wontons in Chili Oil had a delicate, bouncy wrapping (covered in addictive spicy sauce) but the filling was shriveled and small. The Original Kung Pao Chicken tasted sugary like Orange Chicken; it felt like an attempt to hide the dry taste of its chicken. The Stir-Fried Angus Ribeye with Scallions tasted mushy and bland as if a premade bowl had been sitting out for a long time; this tasted like above average buffet food. And the Home-Style Fried Rice is hot and squishy like clay. This rice isn't fluffy and flavorful; rather, it tasted smashed together and wet. This was a BAD showcase of their talents. The food looked somewhat picturesque, but it all tasted rushed and frugal. On ambiance, Sichuan Impression (Alhambra) felt loud, crowded, and plain. The place appears clean, but it was not a memorable spot. At most, it looks like a spruced up cafeteria. Overall, Sichuan Impression (Alhambra) left a poor impression. This business couldn't handle the large crowds, and the mediocre quality/results felt very apparent. This place is not bad, but it's also not great. 3.3 out of 5

We'd been talking about getting Chinese food, and he picked Xiang La Hui, his go-to spot for classic Sichuan. I'd never been before, and was more than happy to try a new spot in the SGV. We met up at noon and stayed until the restaurant wrapped up lunch service and gently pushed us out the door, sometime around 2:30. The space was nice, instantly recognizable as a Chinese restaurant in Alhambra. It was pretty quiet the whole time, a good place for a leisurely catch-up. Service was fast and polite, though the combination of QR code ordering and poor Verizon service was a bummer. I had to cross the dining room to take down the wifi password posted on the opposite wall. We ordered a sizable spread for two people: Chong Qing fried chicken, dan dan noodles, wontons with chili oil, and pea tips with garlic. Everything was delicious, most of all the Chong Qing fried chicken, crispy nibbly bits of breaded chicken stir-fried with green onion and hot pepper. I love dan dan noodles and wontons, and thought both were great, if not the best I've had in the area. The pea tips were lovely, bright green and not spicy, but abundantly flavorful. I'd love to come back to Xiang La Hui and try more of the menu. It seems like a restaurant that does everything well, and I'll keep it in mind whenever I'm craving Sichuan.

Kind of like calling this place an institution. So I will call this place what I should to not be drown in my own trite. One time I went to this place and I went cause I was invited to a birthday party. And it was a large group of people. Me and a friend debated if Penny, from the Big Bang, had eaten at this place. She was also in Charmed--- it is a household name, I can't remember it. So this place is famous enough to be a go to move, and it has many pictures of celebrities that have gone there. The food is also super good, so this place, like I said is an insititution. When I went there a second time, I was more aware of the place I was visiting and kind of was ready to receive its Chinese fare with an unhinged jaw. The food did take a while, but I can understand that when everything is being made fresh. Just know that if you're on a time crunch, this probably isn't the place for a quick meal. The gentleman who seated us and took our order was really nice, but after that, we pretty much felt forgotten about. Once the food arrived though, it was Good. Very flavorful, authentic Chinese food, and definitely worth trying. The atmosphere is loud and busy, no music, just the sound of a completely packed restaurant, so don't come expecting a quiet, relaxing dinner. Also, fair warning, some of these dishes are Spicy, and I mean actually spicy. If you love some heat, you'll probably love this place. Overall, I'd recommend giving it a try for the food. Lots of dishes to choose from. A good variety too of proteins, vegetables, noodles and Wonton soup.

Good flavor, chewy noodles, and fresh dumplings. Lots of variety on their menu. Casual environment, which is clean and orderly.

The way it's set up is pretty cultural. It reminds me of some hole-in-the-wall Asian restaurant the way they have metal utensils at each table. It's almost like a self-serve system to certain tools which is pretty common. I haven't drank water out of metal cup in a long time, so that was nostalgic too. We tried a variety of dishes to get a fuller understanding of their menu of what this place has to offer. I was really looking forward to the beef roll because it's usually one of my favorite dishes, but this one was disappointing. I define a good beef roll as one that's a good mix of sweet, savory and refreshing. The meat makes it savory and the veggies are supposed to counter it make the whole dish feel light. If someone disagrees with me, please share your thoughts on what a beef roll should taste like. The one from Pine & Crane was drenched in sauce. I could not taste the meat or the veggies and the whole thing tasted like a stick of sugar. The mapo tofu was on point, but this is quality you can probably make at home. The flavor profile was very similar to that of stuff you'd get a grocery store. The three cup jidori chicken came recommended, so we tried it. The flavor is very pungent and goes well with rice. The braised pork in brown sauce was rich, tender, and melted in my mouth. My favorite of the meal was definitely the garlic vermicelli shrimp. The shrimp were fresh and cooked perfectly, while the vermicelli soaked up all of the garlic sauce. It was easily the standout dish and something I would come back specifically to order again. The Kung Pao chicken was tender, and a good balance of savory, sweet, and tang. The restaurant isn't that big but it does have tables suitable for larger groups. This is a decent spot for lunch. The only thing is the dishes are a little more expensive compared to other restaurants. The staff were attentive, efficient, and made sure everything arrived promptly which I appreciated.

The space feels worn -- menus tattered, décor dated, the whole interior overdue for a refresh. For a restaurant positioning itself at the higher end of Chinese dining, Meizhou Dongpo is sleeping on the finer details. No complimentary tea service, and rather than offering a pot for the table, they serve individual tea by the mug -- a comically oversized Western mug at that. Chopsticks arrive without spoons, and when you ask for one, you get silverware instead of the porcelain you'd expect at Chinese restaurant. The Peking duck accoutrements came with a little plastic spoon on the tray. Small things, but they add up.The fried rice was a letdown too and looked nothing like the menu photo. Spots like Din Tai Fung and Lunasia Signature are operating at a different level and the gap shows. Meizhou Dongpo has the bones of a great Chinese restaurant. The duck alone proves it. But until they invest in the experience around the food, it's hard to recommend at this price point.
