My favorite authentic Chinese spot on Olympic Boulevard; I usually go and have a lunch there when I am done with my facial appointment at Dr Laser in Santa Monica It's not too crowded usually And their food is out of this world I like Chow fun with Dry beef And I usually order a half duck to go

Crispy 15. House Special Sizzling Rice Soup (Broth)

Authentic Chinese food on the westside. You can tell by hearing the staff speak to tables of diners in Chinese. Menu is multiple pages with lots of choices with some photos offered for reference. Our standout dishes were the duck (served with duck sauce, hot and sour soup and the beef chow fun. Jasmine tea was served automatically but rice was not. I'm guessing we needed to ask for it but we had enough so we didn't really need it. Prices are reasonable, portions are generous and service is quick. Food is served hot and fresh. It has a very small shared parking lot but street parking is available on Sepulveda after 7 pm. We only touched on the menu, ordering the dishes I grew up with at long gone LA Chinatown restaurants and it brought back memories of those meals. I've been here before but it's been a while and this visit was a reminder to come back more often.

Stir Fried Kidney with Rattan Pepper

With so many superb dining options around Sawtelle, it took forever before we decided on Hop Woo on Olympic, which is located in a small plaza with 12 very limited parking spaces. Inside, with its blend of Asian and modern décor, was clean and spacious enough to accommodate 50 guests. Since it was early in the evening, we got seated right away and the staff brough tea, water, and their quite extensive menu. For this visit, we ordered the following dishes: Double Cold Cut with BBQ Duck and Cold Chicken: The lightly fried duck pieces were flavorful but on the skinny side. The cold chicken slices were tender with firm and gelatinous skins. The complementary ginger sauce gave the meat a pleasant added flavor. Seafood with Spicy Garlic & Black Bean Sauce (Wide Rice Noodles): The noodles were skillfully sautéed with firm texture and slight smoke flavor. The seafood medley with shrimp, octopus and squid was perfectly cooked. The diced fresh bell peppers and onions added nice taste and textures. The savory black bean and garlic sauce combined all these ingredients into a harmonious dish. BBQ Pork with Oyster and Tofu Hot Pot: The fried tofu cubes were nicely crispy outside and silky soft inside. The BBQ pork pieces were tender. The oysters with light layer of batter were beautifully fried and plentiful. The garlic based sauce was super savory and aromatically flavorful. Stir Fried Kidney with Rattan Pepper: This was a quite unique dish and definitely not for the faint of heart. First, the whole dish was simmered in spicy chili oil, one that burns from your tongue all the way to your stomach and beyond. The sliced pieces of kidney were crunchy and had a very acquired flavor which evoked contrasting reactions among us (personally I loved it). There were also other ingredients such as wood ears, bamboo shoot s, sliced peppers and celery. Eating this dish was like a treasure hunt in a bowl. Overall, it was a very pleasant meal and made us wonder about its average Yelp rating. After some probing, it seemed some of the bad reviews were service related. Personally, I think it partially due to language barrier and cultural differences. We took care of it in this visit by applying our "foreign" restaurant rule: speak slowly, smile a lot, and use the magic word "please" often.

Signature garlic spare ribs. Sadly underseasoned and tasted only of garlic. Added salt provided the heavy lifting.

I started eating here back in the early 2000s when it had a different name, Full House, I believe. There's some managerial change where I think Moon House is somewhat related, as is the Hop Woo in Chinatown. No real on-demand roast pork, unfortunately. At its heart, Hop Woo is a Cantonese restaurant that opened up a large Sichuan menu around the time Sichuan Impression started business in the area. The Cantonese food is more or less what you can expect, though the book of Sichuan food includes some exotic bits like duck blood, frogs, and other less-known proteins. The real standout is the lobster. The sizes seems to change all the time, but the dine-in deal at around $16/lb cannot be beat. I do miss when the restaurant had a larger live tank, but it seems they focus on only the lobster and/or crab now. Expect a comprehensive menu with roast duck, congee, twice-cooked pork, seafood, and other familiar and perhaps unfamiliar items. It seems they may be scaling back on a few certain items such as clams, but making it up with adding some ingredients like bullfrog or crayfish. Lunch specials are still prominent. If you want, ask for special condiments like red vinegar or white pepper. BYOB if that's your thing.

    1/2 duck and cashew chicken

Came for duck after reading reviews. Its . In a very small shopping center. Unassuming. But wow. The duck is cooked perfect, crispy on outside. Tender inside. I wanted veggies so ordered cashew chicken lunch special. It was way beyond good. I would recommend this to anyone. Prices are very reasonable. Lunch is 12.95 with rice. The staff are nice too!! Especially the girl that was working. She went above and beyond what was expected. Full of energy. 10 stars.

Green peppercorn fish fillet and Griddle Cooked Cauliflower/
    Luke Q.

We've ordered takeout from this restaurant numerous times, but this was our first visit in person. The atmosphere and service are fairly standard -- though we did notice a few flies occasionally flying around the dining area (not in the food, to be clear) -- but the quality of the food more than makes up for it. When it comes to Sichuan cuisine in the West LA area, this place is truly top-tier. We ordered the Griddle Cooked Cauliflower and the Green Peppercorn Fish, both of which were exceptional. The cauliflower was deeply flavorful, seasoned with rich aromatics and enhanced by the savory intensity of pork belly. The fish fillets were fresh, thinly sliced, and perfectly tender. What really stood out was the use of three different types of peppercorns, which created a layered, complex interplay of heat and numbing spice. Portions were generous -- easily enough to serve three people. In addition to their authentic Sichuan offerings, the restaurant also excels at Cantonese dishes, making it a rare and irreplaceable gem in West LA's Chinese food scene.

This is what delivered after 2 hour wait!
    Kelly L.

This review is for take-out order only. The reason for one star because we did not receive food for over 2 hours and less half of the food was delivered. We ordered food via Yelp app to celebrate the last day of the Dragon year wih friends. Food was delivered via Ubereats. It took 2 hours for food to be ready. The poor Uber driver lady waited for 2 hours at the restaurant. We ordered - Egg rolls, $6.95: did not receive - Dumplings, 6 pieces for $7.95: plain - Pot stickers, 6 pieces for $7.95: meh - Gai lan woth oyster sauces $17.95, meh - Silky chicken corn soup, $11.95: did not receive - Steamed rice, $4: did not receive - Chicken pan fried noodle, $15.95: very sad looking noodles, not crispy. The chicken and broth are plain and very sad looking - sweet and sour shrimp, $19.95: did not receive. - whole fish, $29.95: did not receive it. We were so disappointed and very embarrassed with our house guests! When we tried to call the restaurant, they hung up several times and then did not pick up after a few calls... may be we just got punked! I would not recommend this place!

Food is good and comes out all of it came out super quickly. The staff service is decent. Our meal was good and we'd definitely come back again. My favorite was the chicken chow mein. All the seating is inside and there's a lot of tables.

    Intestines

It's really tasty and authentic Chinese cuisine!!! So good. 干锅花菜cauliflower ----绝了!my favorite! 干锅肥肠 intestines ---- my friend recommended it before we had ordered, saying it's the best!! But eventually what we got was not as tasty as she had expected-- it was still good!! Just not as expected. 豆瓣活鱼fish -- omggggg the best!!!!!! Ahhhh!!! I finally found a place that serves Chinese cooking style fish in Los Angeles!!! Omggggg!!! Highly recommend!!!! 干锅牛蛙frog -- good!!! Finally found the fried frog!!! Not as expected, but it was still good enough. The frog is not very fat, but still satisfying. Highly recommend. I'll definitely come again!!

    Shrimp and mushroom with rice

After a long day of watching the Chinese new year parade, Cassie F. and were starving so we hippity hoppity hopped to Hop Woo. A stampede of parade goers came in shortly after we put our name on the list. While we were waiting, a pair of Chinese dragons came and do their little dance and eating the lettuce which was super entertaining! We were lucky to catch it before our lunch. The wait was about 30 mins which was fair considering it being extremely busy. It was a little hard to place our order since they were very short staffed. We ended up ordering the chicken chow mien (w/Shanghai noodles) and chicken with mushroom with rice. The chicken chow mien was the one of the best noodles I had in my life! The chicken with mushroom with rice on the other hand came out as shrimp with mushroom with rice. They got my order wrong. I didn't want to wait another 30 minutes just to get my dish so I settled for the shrimp and mushroom which exceeded my expectations! This place is considered authentic for Chinese food. A solid choice if you are ever in Chinatown!

No wait on a Wednesday night around 7pm for 6 people. They had customers throughout the night but were never too full. I was with a group and we each ordered something, so I don't know the names of all the dishes. Shrimp/Peanuts/Onions - 3 stars Braised Intestines - 2.5 stars (distinct intestine smell was still present) Green Beans - 3.5 stars Salt Baked Chicken - 3 stars Peking Duck - 4 stars Pork Belly - 3.5 stars

Went there today 4/19 and they only had take out, anyone know when dine in starts?

Hi there - I placed a delivery order an hour again, but haven't received it nor were I contacted by anyone. What's going on??? My order number is 18. No one picks up the phone from the restaurant....

Did they finish their remodel and open up their main dining room? Do they still use what was a temporary dining room to the left while the remodel was happening?

I think they opened, we are sitting to the right of the door and they are now remodeling the left side.

How much per pound for Maine lobsters and how much is their corkage charge and how many people can sit at one of their big round tables?

Was just there on February 6, 2020. The lobster was $23 per pound. Don't know the answers to your other questions.

That was my first mistake -- they don't even serve mu shu pork. That one's on me for not checking the menu first. I ended up getting my kung pao chicken and settled for the Mongolian beef, and veggie egg rolls. The Mongolian beef I could definitely pass on. The kung pao chicken was good at first, but somehow lost its flavor as the meal went on. The egg rolls were just okay. Nice and crispy on the outside, but too mushy on the inside for my liking. I was also pretty surprised (and a lot sad) that they didn't have hot mustard. The tea was really good though! Service was fine. The server was attentive, just clearly busy keeping up with all the takeout orders coming through. Ambience is definitely on the lower side here, so don't come expecting a nicer Chinese restaurant. It leans more Santa Ana burger joint vibes. That said, everything felt clean and they were pumping out a ton of takeout orders while we were there, so clearly they're doing something right. Overall, it just didn't hit for me, and I don't see myself coming back.

I would recommend getting the salt and pepper pork chop - my dad says this is literally better than most places we've gone to. I think they season the batter, which is how its so flavorful. We also typically get the eggplant, which comes in a huge plate and comes with rice. My dad likes their curry but I'm not super excited about it. Its good, but not exciting, if you know what I mean. Service is typically pretty good. They move around pretty quickly and food typically comes out pretty quickly too. The rice isn't great, like it's kind of dry, but its free so no complaints here.

This used to be one of my favorite Hong Kong-style cafes, but lately the food quality has gone…read moredownhill. My go-tos here are the kung pao chicken and the sweet and sour fish. The last few times I've ordered the kung pao chicken, it barely had any veggies. It used to come with a mix of colorful bell peppers, but now it's mostly onions. The sweet and sour fish used to be lightly battered and nice and meaty. On my last visit, it was heavily battered and you could barely taste the fish. I'm not sure if they changed chefs, but the difference in quality is definitely noticeable. It's disappointing because I really like the staff. They're always friendly and provide great service. I'm hoping the food goes back to how it used to be.
